Streszczenie:
The concepts of motherhood and parenthood are considered from the point of view of parental functions. A study was conducted of the parental attitudes of young mothers aged 20 to 35 y.o., who have the only child or a second child not older than 3. Among the 60 participants surveyed: 30 young mothers with one child and 30 mothers with parenting experience. The results of the study showed that the experience of parenting affects the attitude to family roles and to the child. The analysis of the results of the study of parental attitudes made it possible to record a significant number of significant differences (“attitude to family roles” – t = 2.46; р = 0.003; “restriction to the role of a housewife” – t = 4.07; р = 0.04; “sacrifice of parents” – t = 3.81; р = 0.05; “emotional distance with the child” – t = 3.66; р = 0.03; “excessive concentration on the child” – t = 4.58; р = 0.05; “contact” – t = 2.62; р = 0.005; “cognitive needs” – t = 3.97; р = 0.001; “creativity” – t = 3.51; р = 0.0001). Young mothers with one child limit their interests to the family, which creates a sense of sacrifice and provokes family conflicts; with a child, such a mother is emotionally close and encourages their activity. Experienced mothers do not limit their interests to family boundaries, while being satisfied with family relationships, the attitude towards the child is more authoritarian, such mothers are not emotionally close to the child and are strict. That is, the experience of parenting has a mixed effect on parental attitudes. In the group of young mothers with one child, it is necessary to get rid of the feeling of self-sacrifice in the family, increase self-esteem, and also reduce excessive care for the child. In a group of young mothers with parenting experience, it is necessary to reduce the authoritarian influence on the child, irritability and severity.

Streszczenie:
AbstractThis paper outlines the full details of Lucretius’ treatment of parental love. It shows that Lucretius is faithful to Epicurus’ notorious claim that parental love is not natural: in addition to orthodox Epicurean hedonist concerns, Lucretius asserts that children do not ‘belong to’ their parents by nature; as such, even though parental love is now ubiquitous and indeed a cultural norm, there is no basis for the naturalness of parental love. This model of the relationship between parents and children does not, however, apply in the case of certain animals, who do have natural parental love for their offspring. Focussing on two famous scenes, the sacrifice of Iphigenia and the forlorn heifer seeking her sacrificed calf, the paper argues that, by highlighting the fragility of human parental love in comparison to that of the animals, Lucretius brings to his Roman readers’ attention the relative weakness of the familial ties that bond human beings together. At the same time, he emphasises the need to maintain these ties, if social and political concord, with all its benefits, is to continue. It transpires that unlocking the details of Lucretius’ treatment of parental love brings a key lesson of the poem into clearer focus.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Studies have shown that Americans do not save enough for retirement because they prioritize providing support of their young-adult children over saving for retirement. Attitudes toward parental support has been largely overlooked in existing literature. Using a factorial vignette experimental design and a sample of 500 Americans of age 40 and older, this study investigated how manipulation of contextual factors changed endorsement of parental support. This study found that endorsement of parental support varied depending on the goal of support, whether it was to purchase a car, pay for school tuition, or to pay for down payment for a house. Thus, 67% of respondents endorsed parental financial assistance with purchasing a car, 44% endorsed down payment for a house, and only 38% endorsed paying for college tuition, reflecting overall social importance of these three elements in becoming an adult person. Gender of the child did not affect endorsement of parental financial support to adult children, indicating that there were no gender specific social expectations of who should receive more support from parents, daughters or sons. The major motives of parental support included (a) desire to be a “good parent” and to take responsibility for the child, (b) expectation that children would eventually pay back their parents, and (c) desire to make sacrifice for own children. Parental support may provide numerous benefits to both children and their parents; however, it is important to educate parents on ways to support their children without threatening their own financial needs in retirement.

Streszczenie:

While there is considerable research on active shooters, civil liberties, and security in school, there is only limited research that focused upon the parent’s perceptions. Parent’s perceptions affect children’s success in learning and influence children’s perceptions on feeling safe in school. The purpose of this study is to use a quantitative correlational study to evaluate the parent’s perceptions as they relate to sacrificing civil liberties for increased school security. A specific focus is upon parents with children in high schools within the United States. The theoretical basis for this study is the decision making theory which assumes rational behavior. The study required the creation, validation, and testing for reliability of the sacrificing civil liberties for security survey instrument. The sampling of 254 parents from throughout the United States was completed utilizing a web-based survey. The results of this study identified a significant relationship between every subscale of sacrificing civil liberties (SCL) and both predictors Trust in Government (TIG) and Right Wing Authoritarianism (RWA). No relationship was found between educational levels and SCL. A relationship with the predictor age was found with the SCL subscales active monitoring and passive monitoring. Finally, a relationship with the predictor gender was found with the SCL subscale active monitoring. These findings indicate that parents are willing to sacrifice some of their children’s civil liberties within certain constraints. Based upon the results of this study, a conclusion can be drawn that parent’s perceptions are influenced by many of the predictors. The largest relationship was with the predictors TIG and RWA. School officials, law enforcement, and government officials can use these results to assess the acceptability of their actions of increased security while carefully limiting the impact upon student’s civil liberties.

Streszczenie:
Asian American adolescents, such as Chinese and Korean American adolescents, often language broker for their immigrant parents. This study examines how language brokering influences parent-child relationships and adolescents' psychological adjustment in Asian-American families. Using a two-wave sample of Chinese (n = 237; average age = 14.65, SD = .68) and Korean (n = 262; average age = 14.72, SD = .69) American adolescents, this study examined a culturally relevant conditional mechanism through which language brokering may contribute to lower levels of internalizing/externalizing problems. Results suggested that language brokering for the mother was associated with perceived maternal sacrifice, which was in turn associated with respect for the mother, which was eventually associated with lower levels of externalizing problems (but not internalizing problems) in the adolescents. Moreover, the indirect effect was conditional on the level of mother-child open communication. With a lower level of open communication, the indirect effect of language brokering on externalizing problems became stronger. Results indicate that interventions designed to reduce Asian American adolescent language brokers' externalizing problems can target their perception of parental sacrifice and their respect for parents, and that this approach may be especially effective for adolescents experiencing a low level of parent-child open communication. At the same time, for these families with low levels of parent-child open communication, encouraging more open communication may be an additional way to intervene.

Streszczenie:
The Old Testament, which is one of the first books in the Malagasy language, plays an important role in the religious and cultural life of most people in Madagascar, for instance in an increasing tendency to use Old Testament texts in Malagasy religious contexts, which is noticeable both within and outside mainstream Christianity. The first such case illustrating this trend within the Church is the Malagasy Roman Catholic Church's (MRCC's) application of certain texts in the famadihana (turning of the dead), a custom reflecting traditional Malagasy practices in their strongest form. Almost all the Malagasy churches from their beginning have unsuccessfully attempted to abolish it. Therefore, the MRCC decided to base it on biblical texts and incorporated it in her liturgy in order to make it a Christian celebration. Among the texts used here are: Genesis 49: 33-50: 13; Exodus 13: 19 and Exodus 20: 12. The second case is the Malagasy Lutheran Church's (MLC's) employment of Old Testament texts to create certain items for Nenilava (Tall mother), the founder of the revival movement of Ankaramalaza, who was acknowledged by this Church and the members of this movement as a prophetess and priestess. To demonstrate these roles, and at the same time to confirm her consecration, the MLC and the `children of Ankaramalaza' made for her a priestly robe modelled on the high priest's garments described in Exodus 28 and a silver crown related to Deuteronomy 28. The use of the Old Testament outside the Church is illustrated by the third case, investigating traditio-practitioners' applications of Old Testament texts in their religious practices. Examples include: 1) Exodus 3:1-3; Leviticus 14: 1-8; Jeremiah 8: 22, used in traditional healing; 2) Exodus 3: 5b; Job 33: 6a; Psalm 121: 8a, employed as religious slogans; 3) Leviticus 1-6, applied in traditional sacrifices and offerings; and 4) Psalm 113: 5-6; Genesis 2: 18, 22, employed as references for morality. This project, which describes and analyses how and why the Old Testament is used by different people, Christian and traditionalist, in Malagasy religious contexts, is aimed at developing an interpretive model based on these three cases. More specifically, it seeks to show how the Old Testament can be interpreted and used in contemporary Madagascar/Africa.

Streszczenie:
THE MARVEL OF MARTYRDOM is about how martyrs can change the world and how self-sacrifice can change lives. The book starts with famous and influential martyrs, such as Jesus and Gandhi. But the pinnacles of martyrdom can only be reached via the plains of everyday selflessness. Every martyr examined began with smaller forms of self-sacrifice familiar to everyone—every parent, every lover, every friend. Every famous martyr succeeded in challenging injustice by appealing to people’s capacity to appreciate self-sacrifice and to follow in the martyr’s footsteps with sacrifices of their own. Unravelling how martyr stories spread from a few witnesses to millions of people, the authors consider martyrdom and self-sacrifice together in cases of notable martyrs (Andrej Sakharov) and less-well known ones (The Heaven’s Hundred), fake martyrs (Horst Wessel), and fictional ones (Harry Potter). They identify Seven Ideal Conditions for Martyrdom, an empirically testable framework for how martyr stories go viral. Using studies in criminology, social psychology, and behavioral economics, they propose a theory of how martyrdom can turn peaceful protest into regime-toppling revolutions like the Arab Spring and the Ukrainian Revolution of 2014. Claiming that suicide bombers are martyrs, terrorists have used the power of martyrdom against their Western targets. The book sets the record straight and offers three ways to defend against the psychological threat of terrorism. In the abundance, safety, and individualism of modern Western life, the power of self-sacrifice is not obvious. This book shows how it can make our lives richer and more meaningful.

Streszczenie:
Under what circumstances is it morally responsible to procreate with the intention of having children, in view of what parents owe their children? Three conditions are necessary for procreation to be morally responsible: the worthwhile-life condition, the doing-more condition, and the basic-needs condition. The worthwhile-life condition requires that a life be expected to be worth starting in the sense that existence is not noncomparatively bad for its subject, containing much that is bad without offsetting compensations. The doing-more condition requires that parents do more for their children than the worthwhile-life condition requires, if they can do so without undue sacrifice. The basic-needs condition provides that parents owe their children efforts to ensure that their basic needs or essential interests are met. Other considerations about the intentions of the parents are relevant to responsible procreation but do not bear on the parents’ responsibilities to the child.

Streszczenie:
When we consider civic education, we are led to ask whether parents have a right to share a way of life with their children and whether the State may justifiably shape the values of its future citizens. And when we try to answer these questions, we may on occasion have to deal with tensions and conflicts between respecting diversity and protecting adults’ rights to religious freedom, promoting the autonomy of the adults children will one day, and protecting the liberty of children. It is indeed the case that parents should not be permitted to sacrifice their children’s future autonomy for the sake of their (the parents’) religious beliefs, and nor should children’s license be permitted to undermine the project of education itself. But nonetheless, there are cases where we should accept some sacrifices in respect of future autonomy so as to better protect the liberty of children or their parents. For instance, in some cases we should allow children greater freedom to influence the design and delivery of civic education classes and to opt out of certain aspects of those programmes, if in doing so we guarantee gains in children’s liberty; and we should allow parents to remove their children from civic education classes, for short periods, and so as to engage in religious ceremonies, so as to respect diversity and protect parents’ right to liberty.

Some moral philosophers in the West (e.g., Norman Daniels and Jane English) hold that adult children have no more moral obligation to support their elderly parents than does any other person in the society, no matter how much sacrifice their parents made for them or what misery their parents are presently suffering. This is because children do not ask to be brought into the world or to be adopted. Therefore, there is a "basic asymmetry between parental and the filial obligations." I argue against the Daniels/English thesis by employing the traditional Confucian view of the nature of filial obligation. On the basis of a distinction between 'moral duty' and 'moral responsibility' and the Confucian concept of justice, I argue that the filial obligation of adult children to care respectfully for their aged parents is not necessarily self-imposed. I conclude that due to the naturalistic character of the family, the nature of our familial obligations (such as parental caring for young children and adult children's respectful caring for aged parents) cannot be consensual, contractarian and voluntarist, but instead existential, communal and historical.

The chapter offers an overview of what it argues is the contemporary obsession with the Self - not only to the detriment of others, but also to that of the human potential for a better nature. It argues, following Hobsbawm, that the problems of values and judgment have been reduced the 'single denominator of the unrestricted freedom of the individual'. Consequently, the decline of social democracy has witnessed the failure of the socialist Left to resist the dissipation of significant Enlightenment values. The chapter is in two parts, the first of which provides brief discussions of the 'postsocialist' condition and the politics of recognition, the self and identity politics, and individualisation as 'a fate not a choice'. In the second part, several critiques of the therapeutic culture are briefly discussed, particularly with reference to what have been termed 'pure relationships' and the 'emotive will' which, it is argued, are mistakenly used to protect the self against the 'bleak coldness' of contemporary life. The chapter concludes by arguing for the jettisoning of contractual parent-child relations and renewal of the idea of parental self-sacrifice as a means of helping children to grow up.

Chapter 4 reveals that immigrant parents had mixed success in translating the liyi practices of Chinese Popular Religion to their Chinese American children due to four major barriers. First, Chinese American families transmitted practices by modeling rituals without explaining them. The second generation performed customs without fully understanding the symbols and meanings. Second, the dissonant acculturation between parents and children led the second generation to be more Americanized and less receptive to traditional, hierarchical values. Third, Christian dominance and privilege in the United States rendered Chinese practices exotic and superstitious. Fourth, gendered and racialized experiences “othered” Chinese traditions as foreign and outdated. In spite of these barriers, Chinese Americans distilled and hybridized what was most important to them from these practices to sustain familism.

Streszczenie:
Elastography, a non-invasive imaging modality, utilizes mechanical properties of tissue as markers for disease diagnosis or staging. In the case of liver, there have been a number of studies focusing on the relationship between elastic mechanical properties and underlying disease, i.e. fibrosis and cirrhosis. In summary, these studies indicate the feasibility of elastographic tools in detecting liver diseases such as fibrosis and steatosis. There have not been any studies looking at the mechanical properties of the preterm neonate liver to date, which is important, because preterm neonates are at a greater risk for developing liver complications due to their aggressive dietary needs that are met with total parenteral nutrition (TPN). They use of elastography may be less from the use of elastographic tools since the concerns over noise levels in measurements resulting from abdominal wall thickness may be less influential. Therefore, it is necessary to establish basic preterm neonate liver mechanical properties. In this study, we measured the nonlinear (hyperelastic) mechanical properties of livers from preterm pigs that were fed common neaonatal diets, i.e. colostrum, total parenteral nutrition (TPN). 16 neonate pigs survived the feeding regime. Mechanical evaluation of 15 of these neonatal pigs was achieved with the use of uniaxial compression experiments at 0.01 s−1 strain rate. The livers averaging a weight of 34.7±7.0 (SD), were stored in phosphate buffered saline solution at 4°C until experimentation, which occurred within 30 minutes of the animal sacrifice. A minimum of three specimens from each liver was required for the computation of averaged mechanical properties. In addition to mechanical testing samples, blood serum was also obtained from these animals and common chemical parameters for liver health were measured (bilirubin, ALT, AST, HDL, LDL, etc.) Exponential form of the hyperelastic strain energy function, W = b1exp[b2(L2 + 2/L-3)], where bi are the material parameters and L is the stretch ratio, was utilized to describe the hyperelastic mechanical behavior of the preterm neonate pig livers. With the use of E = 6b1b2, a small-strain regime estimate of the elastic modulus of the neonate liver tissue was also computed. The mean b1 and b2 parameters are determined to be 97.00±44.15(SD) Pa and 1.90±0.28(SD) (n = 71). The mean elastic modulus exhibited an linear dependence on the HDL values obtained from chemical analysis of the blood serum. Moreover, although relatively weak, the ratio of the HDL over LDL also correlated with the elastic modulus. To our knowledge, this is the only study to date that has focused on the mechanical properties of preterm neonatal pigs and its correlation with liver lipid profile in neonates.
