AbstractBased on the findings from research on organizational feedback and data use in schools, this chapter systematizes relevant factors influencing the use of student feedback by teachers in three domains: (1) personal characteristics of feedback recipients (teachers), (2) characteristics of the organization (school), and (3) characteristics of feedback information (data). We identified teachers’ self-efficacy, attribution styles, goal orientations, and age or professional experience as relevant individual characteristics. In addition, teachers’ attitude toward students’ trustworthiness or competence as a feedback provider appeared to be relevant for the use of student feedback. Beyond that, findings on organizational characteristics for teachers’ successful dealing with feedback pointed to the importance of a feedback culture and organizational safety, leadership, supportive measures, and perceived function of feedback as control vs. development. Furthermore, relevant characteristics of feedback information were identified as comprehensibility, valence, and specificity. Although such findings from other fields of research have been known for some time, studies on student feedback concerning these aspects are rare. Finally, practical measures are derived for each of the three domains in order to increase the use of student feedbacks by teachers.

This chapter presents findings that the large majority (between 61.8% and 70.9%) of U.S. male veterans in the NVVRS sample appraised the impact of Vietnam service on their personal lives as mainly positive, and that negative appraisals, especially those with high salience (i.e., importance), are strongly associated with PTSD onset and current PTSD. A substantial minority (41.7%) judged the effects to be highly salient in their present lives. It investigates the valence and salience of these appraisals in relation to PTSD and other indicators of wartime and post-war functioning. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that mainly positive appraisals are affirmations of successful wartime and post-war adaptation rather than defensive denials related to maladaptive outcomes. It discusses the possibility that mainly positive appraisals, especially those with low salience, also contribute to successful post-war adaptation.

Chapter 1 sets up general themes: individual versus collective identities and survival; power and tragic, compelled agency; and change versus reproduction of practices and relations. After a brief discussion of historiography, the chapter developed its theoretical framework, building on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of habitus and fields. First, perception and sensation are the foundation of social fields, which are structured signals of practice and authority. Second, fields have topographies of social and symbolic distance that shape perceptions and practices. Empathy is particularly important. Third, a crucial facet of fields is anchors, entities of symbolic and emotional valence that link individuals to fields through personal and symbolic meanings. Finally, groups of fields and actors crystalize into “economies” of contexts and rules of worth. The chapter closes with a discussion of power and compelled, tragic agency, and with a discussion of data: Blockade diaries, state and Party records (NKVD and police reports, Party documents, etc.), and interviews (during the Blockade, in the late 1970s, after 1991).

Considering the old adage, necessity is the mother of invention, there is a need for a sentimental and emotional analysis tool for the accurate identification of the mental state of the patient. Thus, Sentilyser was created. It is a clinical decision support system. Using the recorded voice of a person, the mood is analyzed using support vector regression. Arousal and valence of the audio file is calculated, and thus, the corresponding mood is predicted. The objective of this chapter is to propose the use of Sentilyser as a part of a patient's diagnosis, which will not only help the physician reach a better conclusion but will also help them in cases where the patients themselves are unaware about their own psychological state.

The topic of this contribution is the relationship between hermeneutics and translation practice. In the first theoretical part, some relevant central concepts dealing with the ontological valence of language and the ontological foundation in humans are introduced and discussed; in this part the concern is with the possibility and the meaning of translation between languages and cultures. Considerations by some important scholars and philosophers, linguists, and semioticians such as Augustine of Hippo, Friedrich Schleiermacher, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Fritz Paepcke, and Umberto Eco are included in this section. The starting point is the antagonistic thinking which characterizes two main perspectives in translation studies; this antagonism has always characterized the history of translation and is now deeply anchored in European Translation Studies. Even if some theoretical answers to the ancient antagonism have been presented in the last years (e.g. Mary Snell-Hornby, Christiane Nord, Sergio Bolanos Cuellar), this contribution aims to criticize the theoretical exclusion of perspectives by proposing a comprehensive approach that takes into account both opposing but complementary viewpoints. As a key to good translation two main concepts are thus proposed: the idea of negotiation introduced by the Italian semiotician Umberto Eco and the concept of compromise as explained by the German initiator of philosophical hermeneutics Hans-Georg Gadamer. The theoretical reflections on language and human communication are then illustrated with reference to the practice of translation. The point is to show how the interweaving of theory and practice is particularly adequate for the task of translation, especially when the hermeneutic approach is employed in order to find the right translation solution. This work shows both the challenges translators face in their encounter with the foreign text and the practical and theoretical refinements that a hermeneutic reading of the translating process can bring, especially when it invites translators to take into account the thinking, the feeling and the action of the subjects involved in the translation process. This illustration is done with the help of text examples and by discussing the steps of a personal translating process as applied to some literary poems translated from German into Italian.

In this essay, Valerie Sanders considers the spatial limitations imposed on female writers by male editors, specifically in relation to the late journalism of Margaret Oliphant. Sanders explores the gendered dynamics of women writers publishing work in the press without an accompanying, genuine signature. The ‘grey-haired woman by the fireside’ persona Oliphant assumed for her series in the St James’s Gazette and the Spectator served an emancipatory function in her final years as a journalist in the 1880s and 1890s (p. 391). Making the most of the ‘spatial freedom’ she earned after a long career writing for periodicals, Oliphant’s canny experiments with personae facilitate the expression of ‘idiosyncratic views in opinionated language,’ without danger of recrimination (p. 390). Yet Sanders is also careful to remind us that the professional perspicacity and freedom of voice demonstrated in these late columns come after five decades of writing for Blackwood’s without the security of a ‘formal and continuing contract for regular contributions’ (p. 379). For Oliphant, negotiating a space for her work in the masculine sphere of journalism was not without its difficulties, given that Victorian women rarely, if ever, had access to the press on the same terms as their male counterparts.

Cooper’s chapter takes up the events of June 2015, when a white supremacist gunman entered a historically black church, Emanuel AME, in Charleston, South Carolina, and after sitting with the parishioners for some time during a Bible study, opened fire, killing nine blacks, including the pastor of the church. The incident precipitated a re-evaluation of racial relations in Charleston and around the United States. This chapter explores the difficulties in bridging the racial divide between black and white churches in America by focusing upon Americans’ reactions to the deaths at Emanuel. Black and white Christians’ responses to the massacre at Emanuel demonstrate, Cooper concludes, that believers’ views of history and their personal experiences matter as much or perhaps more than their theology in efforts at racial reconciliation.
