ABSTRACT We determined the sequence of the entire marRAB operon in Enterobacter aerogenes. It is functionally and structurally analogous to the Escherichia coli operon. The overexpression of E. aerogenes MarA induces a multidrug resistance phenotype in a susceptible strain, demonstrated by a noticeable resistance to various antibiotics, a decrease in immunodetected porins, and active efflux of norfloxacin.

ABSTRACT Multidrug resistance (MDR) in Enterobacter aerogenes can be mediated by induction of MarA, which is triggered by certain antibiotics and phenolic compounds. In this study, we identified the gene encoding RamA, a 113-amino-acid regulatory protein belonging to the AraC-XylS transcriptional activator family, in the Enterobacter aerogenes ATCC 13048 type strain and in a clinical multiresistant isolate. Overexpression of RamA induced an MDR phenotype in drug-susceptible Escherichia coli JM109 and E. aerogenes ATCC 13048, as demonstrated by 2- to 16-fold-increased resistance to β-lactams, t

ABSTRACT In Enterobacter aerogenes and Klebsiella pneumoniae, efflux provides efficient extrusion of antibiotics and contributes to the multidrug resistance phenotype. One of the alkoxyquinoline derivatives studied here, 2,8-dimethyl-4-(2′-pyrrolidinoethyl)-oxyquinoline, restores noticeable drug susceptibility to resistant clinical strains. Analyses of energy-dependent chloramphenicol efflux indicate that this compound inhibits the efflux pump mechanism and improves the activity of structurally unrelated antibiotics on multidrug-resistant E. aerogenes and K. pneumoniae isolates.

Five successive isolates of E. aerogenes infecting a patient and exhibiting a multiresistance phenotype to β-lactam antibiotics and fluoroquinolones were investigated. Among these clinical strains, four presented resistant phenotypes during successive imipenem and colistin treatments. The dissemination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) from water used for crop irrigation to vegetables is poorly studied. During a year, five farmer markets in a city in Central Chile were visited, and 478 vegetable samples (parsleys, corianders, celeries, lettuces, chards, and beets) were collected. Simultaneously, 32 water samples were collected from two rivers which are used to irrigate the vegetables produced in the area. Resistant Enterobacterales were isolated and identified. Colistin resistance gene mcr-1 and extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) were molecularly detected. The assoc

The occurrence of colistin resistance has increased rapidly among Enterobacterales around the world. We performed a national survey of plasmid-mediated colistin resistance in human clinical isolates through a retrospective analysis of samples from 2009 to 2017 and a prospective sampling in 2018–2020. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize isolates with mcr genes from various regions of the Czech Republic using whole genome sequencing (WGS). Of all 1932 colistin-resistant isolates analyzed, 73 (3.8%) were positive for mcr genes. Most isolates carried mcr-1 (48/73) and were ident

ABSTRACT Antibiotic resistance is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. However, a better understanding of the relationship between bacterial genetic markers, phenotypic resistance, and clinical outcomes is needed. We performed whole-genome sequencing on five medically important pathogens ( Acinetobacter baumannii , Enterobacter cloacae , Escherichia coli , Klebsiella pneumoniae , and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ) to investigate how resistance genes impact patient outcomes. A total of 168 isolates from 162 patients with Gram-negative infections admitted to Beilinson Hospital at Rabin Medical Ce

ABSTRACT Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) isolates increasingly carry oxacillinase-48 (OXA-48)-like enzymes encoded by bla OXA-48-like , which can confer high levels of carbapenem resistance. This aims to determine the prevalence of CPE and genetic variation among bla OXA-48-like -carrying isolates recovered from Prapokklao Hospital in Chanthaburi Province, Thailand in 2016–2017. In total, 122 carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) isolates were recovered from clinical samples. CRE were evaluated using standard biochemical tests and MIC test strips. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a growing public-health concern worldwide. Patients exhibit compromised immunity and are more prone to infection than other populations. Therefore, oral colonization by clinically relevant members of the Enterobacteriaceae family, major agents of both nosocomial and dialysis-associated infections with frequent prevalence of antibiotic resistances, may constitute a serious risk. Thus, this study aimed to assess the occurrence of clinically relevant enterobacteria and their antibiotic resistance profiles in the oral cavity of CKD patients undergoing peritoneal dia
