AbstractThis article examines the underexplored history of the 1973 Philadelphia Orchestra China tour and retheorizes twentieth-century musical diplomacy as a process of ritualization. As a case study, I consult bilingual archives and incorporate interviews with participants in this event, which brings together individual narratives and public opinions. By contextualizing this musical diplomacy in the Cold War détente and the Chinese Cultural Revolution, I argue for the complex set of relations mobilized by Western art music in 1973. This tour first created a sense of co-dependency between mus

Abstract Introduction: Mutations in the valosin-containing protein (VCP, also known as p97) gene are associated with autosomal dominant inclusion-body myopathy with early-onset Paget disease and frontotemporal dementia. VCP is an ATPase that subserves a variety of cellular functions, prominently, organelle biogenesis and ubiquitin-dependent protein degradation. Recently, VCP has also been shown to physically interact with BRCA1 and is postulated to orchestrate the response to DNA double-strand breaks, a critical molecular prelude to homologous recombination DNA repair. This chapter details the history of the Philadelphia Orchestra, considered one of the greatest orchestras in the world. Founded in 1900, the Philadelphia Orchestra was led during its early years by two German-speaking conductors, Fritz Scheel (1900–1907) and Carl Pohlig (1907—12). Maestro Scheel made a good start on developing an organization of distinction, but he succumbed to an untimely illness in 1907. Unfortunately, the man who succeeded him deflated many of his predecessor's gains, and the orchestra became a competent but stiff ensemble that inspired strained admiration from its own audi

As a composer, Dawson strove to be the voice of his people, using the culturally rich tones and drawing on his own history of musical experiences as a child in Anniston, Alabama. The commission that was one of the greatest tributes to Barber’s career turned out to be his nemesis. Antony and Cleopatra, written for the opening of the new Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center in New York, was handicapped by the inflated Franco Zeffirelli production, with its problematic paraphernalia, including camels and goats and a malfunctioning pyramid, which eclipsed serious evaluation of the music.
