Ten composite surface soil samples representing the distinct geological formation of Kogi state north central Nigeria were treated with various concentration levels of phosphorus and the amount of phosphorus measured at intervals of 1, 28 and 42 days. The phosphorus fixing capacities of the soils increased with increasing levels of P addition and equilibration time. At 1 day, phosphorus fixation capacities estimated by fractional recovery ranged from 2 to 49% and at 42 days observation it varied from 27 to 63%, respectively. The amount of phosphorus required to raised the value of Bray P-1 by

A survey of 71 sites was conducted in the dairying districts of south-western Victoria in October 1994 to determine factors associated with nitrogen (N) fixation in white clover based pastures. Twenty-eight factors (environmental, microbiological, management, soil, and pasture) were considered in relation to 2 indicators of N fixation by white clover, %Ndfa (percentage of total plant N derived from the atmosphere, as determined by the 15N natural abundance method) and kg of N fixed per tonne herbage dry matter (legume and non-legume). Phosphorus (P) is among the most intractable constraints on plant fertility, particularly in acidic soils with high P fixation capacities. The effects of nutrient limitation and the adaptive strategies of plants in infertile soils are central topics in plant ecology. The development of tree cultivars with greater P use efficiency (PUE), defined as the ability of a tree to grow and be productive in soils with reduced P availability, would substantially improve forest development. The ability of plants to redistribute and transfer P across fractions determines their adaptability to P limitations

Modern agriculture is currently enduring rapid changes in defiance of the continuing increase of the global population and the various consequent environmental challenges. Crop quality is becoming as important as crop yield and can be characterized by several parameters. Extensive use of chemical fertilizers leads to food safety concerns globally; hence, the use of mycorrhizal symbionts have proven to be beneficial for the sustainable growth of the agricultural cropping system. Microflora inhabiting the soil entails various ecological interactions which are associated with agricultural perform

The micronutrient status of the soils and leaf of cocoa, kola, cashew and coffee plantations to study the soil-plant micronutrient content relationship in the plantation soils for proper management towards optimum production of the crops was investigated at Uhonmora, Edo State, Nigeria. Soil and leaf samples were collected from these plantations and analyzed according to standard laboratory procedures. The soil samples were analyzed for the micronutrients (Cu, Mn, Zn and Fe) and in addition pH, organic carbon, sand, silt and clay contents, while the leaves were analyzed for only the micronutri

Phosphorous fixation capacities of selected parent materials in Akwa Ibom State were assessed. The soils used were those derived from river alluvium, beach ridge sand and coastal plain sand. These soils were incubated with four rates of P ranging from 0, 20, 40, 80 mgl-l prepared from KH2PO4 and incubated for 1, 7, 30, 60 and 90 days. The design was 3 x 4 factorial experiment (3 soil types and 4 rates of P) fitted into Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. AbstractThe recently described red alga Tsunamia transpacifica (Stylonematophyceae) was previously isolated from plastic drift found at the pacific coast, but the natural habitat remains unknown. Here, we investigate ultrastructural details and the low molecular weight soluble carbohydrate composition to get further insight into the adaptation to this uncommon habitat. By means of high pressure freeze fixation, followed by freeze substitution, we could detect an up to 2-µm-thick cell wall surrounded by a distinct layer of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), likely responsible for the adh
