summary Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures associated with cardiology are heavily supported by diagnostic imaging technology. The management of such images, including radiographs, echocardiography examinations and cardiac angiography studies, requires a suitable means of handling the data. A number of manufacturers are now offering picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) and telecardiology options. These could greatly improve the efficiency of data management for cardiac examinations, including linkage to radiology and hospital information systems and electronic patient records.

The first electronic information systems to help compile radiological reports appeared in the mid-1960s and were introduced primarily in radiology departments of healthcare. Due to the development and achievements in the field of information technology in radiology, a system of archiving and transmission of images (Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS)) was introduced, this helped to reduce the stages of work processes in the routine practice of a radiologist in comparison with the use of classical systems based on films and paper. Also, the use of PACS has led to an increase in th

Abstract The majority of medical facilities in the Slovak Republic archive diagnostic images of their patients in a picture archiving and communicating system (PACS). Data from the PACS system can be used to analyse patient radiation dose and perform internal and external quality control through dose monitoring software systems. However, appropriate use of such systems requires the provision of feedback and the ability of staff to identify causes of diagnostic reference level exceedances. The present pilot study evaluated the use of a Dose quality control system (DQC) for monitoring the radiat

For this historical review, we searched a database containing all the articles published in Acta Radiologica during its 100-year history to find those on the use of information technology (IT) in radiology. After reading the full texts, we selected the presented articles according to major radiology IT domains such as teleradiology, picture archiving and communication systems, image processing, image analysis, and computer-aided diagnostics in order to describe the development as it appeared in the journal. Publications generally follow IT megatrends, but because the contents of Acta Radiologi

Summary Objectives: The paper uses the example of PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) in Austria (where some of the earliest large PACS projects were realised and led to a high penetration with state-wide networked PACS installations) to discuss success criteria and success factors of medical information systems. Methods: The paper describes the development of digital imaging in medicine and classifies the impact of systems according to their first or second order effects on patient care. The historic goals of PACS and the technical infrastructure in the eighties are shortly desc

This article reports an experimental study to determine how to use the stored Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM) metadata to perform population studies. As a case study, it was considered three types of medical imaging studies (i.e. routine head computed tomography, thorax computed radiography and thorax digital radiography) stored in the picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) of three healthcare institutions. The final sample consisted of DICOM metadata belonging to 1370360 images, corresponding to 109160 medical imaging studies performed on 72716 patients. The
