To characterize some traits of the life strategies of Polycheles typhlops, a deep-sea small lobster usually encountered as by-catch within deep trawls in the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea (Mediterranean Sea), we analysed the biochemical composition of caudal muscles of 49 specimens collected in March and April 2007. Differences in the biochemical composition between females and males were weak, and relevant differences in protein (>90% of the organic C) and lipid (4-6%) contents were observed between developmental stages both in females and males. These differences were likely related to differen

The present study analyses the diversity and community structure of the lobsters captured using bottom trawl shrimp nets at depths of 41 to 626 m during fishery prospection cruises conducted between 1996 and 1998. The study area encompasses the coasts of the Brazilian states of Amapá and Pará, which were divided into two sectors, to the north and to south of Cape North. The 44 lobster specimens identified belonged to nine species: Acanthacaris caeca (A. Milne-Edwards, 1881), Nephropsis aculeata Smith, 1881, Nephropsis rosea Bate, 1888, Palinustus truncatus A. Length-weight relationships (LWR) and relative condition factor were described for species of deep-water crustaceans caught with bottom trawls in a depth range between 150 and 535 m during August and December of 2009, and March and May of 2010 in the Colombian Caribbean Sea. A linear regression was performed using the logarithmically transformed data to calculate the a and b coefficients of the LWR for 22 crustacean species corresponding to 13 families and 19 genera and three types of crustaceans (shrimp, crab, lobster). Six crustacean species showed a maximum total length greater than that re

We sampled the decapod crustaceans inhabiting the depth zone between 500 and 1500 m off Gökçeada Island (northern Aegean Sea) from May 2010 to November 2011. The deep-slope decapod fauna of the northern Aegean Sea was sampled with baited traps. A total of 23 species of decapods have been identified at 32 stations. The results were analysed in terms of composition and distribution of benthic and benthopelagic bait-attracted species between regions. In addition, they were compared between stations in relation to the depth gradient. The results are discussed in relation to previous studies carrie

Changes in the composition of the diet, foregut fullness, and the degree of digestion of ingested food were taken into account in determining diel feeding activity of the numerically dominant species of decapod crustaceans dwelling on the Catalan Sea Slope (western Mediterranean). Two 24-h periods were sampled at two different stations on the upper middle slope (between 400 and 710 m) using bottom trawls. Additional foregut fullness data for Aristeus antennatus and Acanthephyra eximia were recorded below 1000 m. The influence of the relatively shallow-living mesopelagic fauna (Pasiphaeidae, Se
