Streszczenie:
Introduction: We assessed the effect of different available denture cleansers on the roughness and hardness of polyetherketoneketone, thermoinjection-molded polyamide, and polymethylmethacrylate. Materials and Methods: A total of 150 disc-shaped specimens were fabricated (10 mm × 2 mm) from these three denture base resins, and divided into five subgroups ( n = 10) according to immersion procedures. One of these groups subjected to distilled water served as control, whereas other groups were subjected to daily cleansing with four denture cleansers (Corega, Protefix, Curaprox, and Perlodent) for 8 h a day for 140 days. The surface roughness and hardness values of specimens were recorded by measuring twice at baseline, and again after application of chemical solutions. Topography alterations after treatments were assessed with scanning electron microscopy. The data were subjected to statistical analysis and comparison among groups was done using Kruskal Wallis and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks tests. P-value <0.05 was considered significant. Results: The surface roughness of polyetherketoneketone, polymethylmethacrylate, and polyamide dentures was increased significantly by chemical solutions of denture cleansers. While the hardness value of polyetherketoneketone was not affected significantly after immersion in denture cleansers, those of polymethylmethacrylate and polyamide decreased significantly. Compared with Curaprox, the effervescent tablets significantly altered the surface hardness and roughness of polyamide. Conclusion: Denture cleansers can considerably alter the surface roughness and hardness of denture base resins and should be used carefully depending on the material.

Streszczenie:
Objectives: The primary objective of this study is to investigate the resistance to fracture of Polyetherketoneketones PEKK, used as post and core by fabrication in different diameters in the canal, and comparing the test results for each group. Methods: Thirty extracted mandibular premolars were selected, endodontically treated and prepared to receive the post and cores milled from polyetherketoneketone disk. The specimens were randomly divided into five groups (n = 6) respectively: group 1 received pekk post with diameter = 0.70 mm, group 2 received pekk post with diameter = 0.90 mm, group 3 received pekk post with diameter = 1.10 mm, group 4 received pekk post with diameter = 1.50 mm, and group 5 received pekk post with diameter = 1.70 mm. All the posts were cemented using a self-adhesive resin cement. Fracture resistance was tested using a universal testing machine, failure patterns were then observed visually and radiographically. For the fracture resistance test, the Universal Testing machine employed the load cell of 10KN and the speed of the cross head of 1mm/min. Data was analyzed using Oneway analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey post-hoc test in order to determine significant differences among groups and the materiality threshold was set at α = 0.05. Results: Statistical analysis revealed that the observed differences among the five groups were not significant. None of the PEKK posts caused any fracture in the root, and this observation was visually and radiographically confirmed across all groups. Conclusions: The dentist will be able to turn the diameter of the PEKK post and core as thin as 0.70mm till 1.70mm depending on the clinical requirement with no risk of root fracture, as specified by the guidelines of this research.

Streszczenie:
Osteoporotic fractures are prevalent in society, and their incidence appears to be increasing as the worldwide population ages. However, conventional bone repair materials hardly satisfy the requirements for the repair of pathological fractures. Here, we developed a biomimetic polyetherketoneketone scaffold with a functionalized strontium-doped nanohydroxyapatite coating for osteoporotic bone defect applications. The scaffold has a hierarchically porous architecture and mechanical strength similar to that of osteoporotic trabecular bone. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that the scaffold could promote osteoporotic bone regeneration and delay adjacent bone loss via regulating both osteoblasts and osteoclasts. In addition, the correlations between multiple preimplantation and postimplantation parameters were evaluated to determine the potential predictors of in vivo performance of the material. The current work not only develops a promising candidate for osteoporotic bone repair but also provides a viable approach for designing other functional biomaterials and predicting their translational value.

Streszczenie:
Poly(aryl-ether-ketone) materials (PAEKs), a class of high-performance polymers comprised of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), have attracted interest in standard dental procedures due to their inherent characteristics in terms of mechanical and biological properties. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a restorative dental material widely used for prosthetic frameworks due to its superior physical, mechanical, aesthetic, and handling features. Meanwhile, polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic embraced in the additive manufacturing market. In the present review study, a new way to fabricate high-performance polymers, particularly PEEK and PEKK, is demonstrated using additive manufacturing digital dental technology, or 3-dimensional (3D) printing. The focus in this literature review will encompass an investigation of the chemical, mechanical, and biological properties of HPPs, particularly PEEK and PEKK, along with their application particularly in dentistry. High-performance polymers have gained popularity in denture prosthesis in advance dentistry due to their flexibility in terms of manufacturing and the growing interest in utilizing additive manufacturing in denture fabrication. Further, this review also explores the literature regarding the properties of high-performance polymers (HPP) compared to previous reported polymers in terms of the dental material along with the current advancement of the digital designing and manufacturing.

The effects of different processing conditions (pressure, holding time and temperature) on the impregnation/consolidation quality of CF/PEKK composite were investigated using compression molding process. Microscopic investigation of cross-sections, density measurements and flexural mechanical properties were used to examine the quality of impregnation and consolidation. A qualitative model to describe the impregnation and consolidation process of this material was developed. The model predicts the variations of void content during consolidation as well as the holding time, moulding temperature and pressure required to reach full consolidation. Good agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental data was achieved. Optimum processing conditions can be determined based on selected void content.

In this study, the optical properties of indirect dental restorations based on poly-ether-ketone-ketone (PEKK), zirconia (YZ), and nickel-chromium (Ni-Cr) veneered with composite were compared. Based on the spectral reflectance, the CIE L*a*b* color coordinates, the color difference (ΔE), the opacity and the translucency parameter (TP) were determined using a spectrophotometer equipped with a D65 illuminant. The PEKK and Ni-Cr groups demonstrated similar CIE L*a*b* color values on white and black backgrounds. However, the zirconia group on a white backgrounds showed a slight shift in values towards red-yellow shades. The highest recorded ∆E values were 1.3 and 1.61 between PEKK and YZ groups, and Ni-Cr and YZ groups respectively. The opacity and translucency (TP) parameters were consistent with the spectral reflectance data, with the Ni-Cr and PEKK groups being completely opaque (100% and 0 TP). It has been shown that the use of the same indirect light-cured composite veneer with different substructure materials has no clinical effect on the esthetics of the final restoration.

Here, we developed a new synthetic method for the production of a new class of polymeric inorganic hybrid biomaterial that has potential for dental implant applications and, in general, other orthopedic applications owing to its excellent mechanical properties and biomechanical compatibility. The new hybrid biomaterial is a composite consisting of polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) and hydroxyapatite (HA). This hybrid material boasts several unique features, including its high HA loading (up to 50 wt%), which is close to that of natural human bone; the homogeneous HA distribution in the PEKK matrix without phase separation; and the fact that the addition of HA has no effect on the molecular weight of PEKK. Nanoindentation analysis was used to investigate the mechanical properties of the composite, and its nano/microstructure variations were investigated through a structural model developed here. Through nanoindentation technology, the newly developed PEKK/HA hybrid biomaterial has an indentation modulus of 12.1 ± 2.5 GPa and a hardness of 0.42 ± 0.09 GPa, which are comparable with those of human bone. Overall, the new PEKK/HA biomaterial exhibits excellent biomechanical compatibility and shows great promise for application to dental and orthopedic devices.

Streszczenie:
Polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) exhibits satisfactory mechanical properties and biocompatibility, with an elastic modulus closely resembling that of natural bone. This property reduces the stress-shielding effect associated with bone implants. However, the biological inertness of the PEKK surface remains a significant limitation for its application in bone tissue engineering. The objective of this study was to create a superhydrophilic 3D porous structure on the surface of PEKK to enhance biocompatibility, in terms of vascularization and bone remodeling. A combination of mechanical, chemical, and physical surface treatments was employed to modify the PEKK surface. Initially, mechanical sandblasting was used to create a rough surface to promote mechanical interlocking with bone tissue. Subsequently, chemical acid etching and physical low-temperature atmospheric plasma cleaning were applied to develop a superhydrophilic 3D porous surface. The modified surfaces were characterized for morphology, roughness, hydrophilicity, and functional groups. Cellular responses, including vascularization and bone remodeling, were evaluated to assess the potential for improved biocompatibility. The combination of acid etching and low-temperature atmospheric plasma cleaning, with or without prior sandblasting, successfully created a superhydrophilic 3D porous structure on the PEKK surface. This modified surface enhanced the tube formation in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. It also promoted the adhesion and mineralization of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells and slightly reduced tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase expression and F-actin ring size in mouse macrophage cells. This study introduces an innovative and effective surface modification strategy for PEKK surface, combining mechanical, chemical, and physical treatments to enhance biocompatibility. The modified PEKK surface promotes angiogenic and osteogenic responses while slightly inhibiting osteoclastic activity, making it a potential alternative for dental and orthopedic PEKK implant applications.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Aim: To evaluate the bond strength between veneering composite and polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) and to examine the effect of different surface treatments this bond strength. Materials and Methods: The study is registered in PROSPERO database with the registration number CRD42024514610. Eligible studies included randomized trials, case–control and cohort studies, in vitro studies, and human studies published in English. A PRISMA-guided search was done on PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, ProQuest, and Scopus for data collection. A total of 162 records were identified, out of which 93 were screened. Full-text assessments were performed on 15 studies, and finally, 6 studies were included in the review. Risk of bias assessment was done using the Timmers RoB tool. Characteristics and results of the included studies were analyzed. Good shear bond strength between PEKK and composite was observed across all studies, influenced by material types, surface treatments, and test methods. Results: Notably, hydrofluoric acid etching with silane demonstrated the highest bond strength in two studies. Risk of bias varied among studies, with one exhibiting high risk, one showing moderate, and four showing low risk of bias. Surface treatments significantly enhance bond strength between veneering materials and PEKK, with sulfuric acid etching, sandblasting, and plasma treatment proving most effective. These findings provide valuable insights for selecting appropriate surface treatments in fabricating dental prostheses. Conclusions: The primary limitation of this review is the heterogeneity of the included studies in terms of methodology, adhesive systems, and surface treatments, which may introduce bias. Further studies in the field with more homogenous studies are required.

Objective. To evaluate the mechanical properties of porous polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) meshes with different thicknesses, pore sizes, and porosities through finite element analysis to provide an optimal PEKK design for alveolar bone augmentation in the posterior mandibular region. Methods. A three-dimensional evaluation model of severe alveolar bone defects in the mandibular posterior was constructed based on cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) data. Then, PEKK meshes with different structural designs were obtained. Two key parameters were set with different values: five levels of thickness (0.2 mm, 0.3 mm, 0.4 mm, 0.5 mm, and 0.6 mm) and three levels of pore size (1 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm) with a corresponding porosity of 19.18%–42.67%. A 100 N physiological force was simultaneously loaded by finite element analysis (FEA), and the deformation and stress data were outputted for further analysis. Results. The deformation and stress of the PEKK meshes are negatively correlated with the changes in thickness and positively correlated with the changes in pore size. The FEA results show that the maximum deformation, equivalent stress, and maximum principal stress of the PEKK meshes are 0.168 mm–0.478 mm, 49.243 MPa–124.890 MPa, and 31.549 MPa–104.200 MPa, respectively. The PEKK mesh group with a thickness of 0.2 mm, pore size of 3 mm, and porosity of 42.67% is in danger of plastic deformation or even fracture during use. Conclusion. According to the FEA results, the PEKK meshes with larger thicknesses and smaller pore sizes and porosities behave better. In consideration of reducing soft tissue stimulation and promoting bone regeneration, an ultrathin porous PEKK mesh with a pore size of no more than 3 mm, porosity of no more than 42.67%, and thickness of 0.2 mm can be used clinically to meet the mechanical performance requirements of the guided bone regeneration (GBR) structure.

Streszczenie:
It is uncertain whether the interchangeable use of two adhesive systems would yield comparable shear bond strength (SBS) for both Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and Polyetherketoneketone (PEKK); investigating this was the main objective of this study. Milled PEEK (Bredent, Senden, Germany) and PEKK (Pekkton Ivory, AnaxDent, Stuttgart, Germany) blocks were prepared with standardized roughness (0.20 μm) and randomly assigned into two groups (n = 72): with and without aluminum oxide air abrasion (AquaCare Twin, Medivance Instruments, London, UK). Two adhesive systems (Visio.link, Bredent, Senden, Germany, or PEKKBond, AnaxDent, Stuttgart, Germany) were randomly applied (n = 36). Flowable gingival composite (AnaxGum Gingiva, AnaxDent, Stuttgart, Germany) was bonded, and the samples were stored in water (37 °C, 24 h). SBS was measured (MPa) and data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey’s test (α = 0.05). All main effects and interactions were significant (p < 0.05), except for polymer (p = 0.163) and the triple interaction (p = 0.601). In the PEEK group, Visiolink showed higher SBS (p < 0.001), regardless of prior air abrasion. For the PEKK group, PEKKBond significantly increased SBS values (p < 0.001) for both pre-treatment groups. Previous air abrasion only significantly increased the SBS of controls without adhesive. This study highlights the importance of material-specific adhesive selection, rather than interchangeable use, for optimal results. The bond strength of PEEK and PEKK is influenced by the adhesive system applied. Moreover, PEKK consistently demonstrated higher SBS values in comparison to PEEK, even without the need for pre-treatment or adhesive conditioning. This characteristic renders PEKK a preferred choice for the fabrication of adhesive restorations.

Transmission electron microscope images and dynamic light scattering confirmed that metallic nanoparticles had been created with an average size of 32 nm. Furthermore, the coating of the PEKK polymeric substrate with 0.5% AgNPs was carried out using an epoxy resin lining at room temperature. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra confirmed the successful transfer of the AgNP-in-resin lining onto the polymeric substrate. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy confirmed that the AgNPs had been uniformly deposited onto the PEKK specimens. Finally, the antibacterial activity of the specimens was tested against Porphyromonas gingivalis. An inhibition zone of 22.5 mm and an antibacterial rate of 83.47% were found for the PEKK coated with 0.5% AgNPs (0.5% Ag-PEKK) compared to an untreated polyetheretherketone (PEEK) substrate, evidencing that 0.5% Ag-PEKK has potential antibacterial properties for implant applications.

Streszczenie:
The present study aimed to investigate the stress distribution of secondary telescopic crowns made of polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) combined with different primary crown (PC) materials (Zirconia, CoCr, Titanium, and PEKK) using finite element analysis. The geometric model was composed of bone tissue, periodontal ligament, root dentin, cement layer, primary crown, and secondary telescopic crown (SC). A total of four models were evaluated in which the secondary crowns were simulated in PEKK. The models were designed in CAD software and exported to the computer aided engineering software for the statistic structural analysis simulation. The materials were considered isotropic, with linear behavior and elastic properties. The model was fixed in the bone base and the load was applied at the occlusal surface of the crowns with 600 N. The results were required in von-Mises stress for the primary crown, secondary crown, cement layer, and Equivalent Strain to the periodontal ligament and bone tissue. Results show that the material influenced the stress distribution. The higher the PC elastic modulus, the higher the stress magnitude on the SC and cement layer. In the present study, the use of milled high-density polymer for primary crown presented a promising biomechanical behavior as an alternative material for double-crown design.

Streszczenie:
Abstract The paper presents the experimental strain and stress analysis of a thermoplastic composite stiffened panel subjected to compression load. The panel has five stringers with a non-symmetric design. Two panels are investigated. The experimental analysis deals with the pristine panel without any flaws and the panel with an artificial crack at the middle stringer interface with the skin. Panels were made from a thermoplastic polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) carbon composite. The buckling and mechanical analysis is based on digital image correlation, strain gauge measurements, and linear variable differential (LVDT) transducers. The crack subcritical extension was defined and analysed. The results show that crack propagation starts coupled with sudden buckling mode transition. The crack growth behaviour is influenced by the buckling shape, which consists of two main modes (with three and four half-waves) in the longitudinal direction in each skin bay.

Streszczenie:
Polymer materials are increasingly widely used in high-fire-risk applications, such as aviation interior components. This study aimed to compare the tensile, thermal, and flame-retardant properties of test samples made from ultra-performance materials, polyetherimide (PEI) and polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), using the fused filament fabrication process (FFF). The tensile tests were performed for these materials at different raster angles (0, 45, and 90°). The thermomechanical tests were done in the axial, perpendicular, and through-thickness directions to the extruded filaments. The impact of printing parameters on the flame retardancy of 3D-printed samples was investigated in vertical burn tests with varying specimen thicknesses and printing directions. Experimentally, it was testified that PEKK had better isotropic behaviour than PEI for mechanical performance, thermal expansion, and fire-resistant properties, which are essential in fabricating intricately shaped products.

Streszczenie:
Additively manufactured implants, surgical guides, and medical devices that would have direct contact with the human body require predictable behaviour when stress is applied during their standard operation. Products built with Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) possess orthotropic characteristics, thus, it is necessary to determine the properties that can be achieved in the XY- and Z-directions of printing. A concentration of 10 wt% of hydroxyapatite (HA) in polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) matrix was selected as the most promising biomaterial supporting cell attachment for medical applications and was characterized with an Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) of 78.3 MPa and 43.9 MPa in the XY- and Z-directions of 3D printing, respectively. The effect of the filler on the crystallization kinetics, which is a key parameter for the selection of semicrystalline materials suitable for 3D printing, was explained. This work clearly shows that only in situ crystallization provides the ability to build parts with a more thermodynamically stable primary form of crystallites.

Streszczenie:
Background: PEKK have been recommended by their manufacturers as a framework material for implant-supported fixed prostheses because of its high biocompatibility, light weight and compatibility with veneering materials. However, achieving high bond strength veneering composite is challenging due to PEKK’s inertness and low surface energy. Purpose: to evaluate the bond strength between PEKK and veneering composite after applying three methods of surface treatment .Material and Methods: A total of 21 PEKK (Pekkton® Ivory, Cendres+Métaux, Bienne, Switzerland) specimens were prepared by using CAD/CAM system, embedded in acrylic resin, polished with (P180 up to P1200), and randomly divided into 3 groups (n=7) (1) Control (sandblasting with 110 μm Al2O3), (2) Air plasma, and (3) Sandblasting with 110 μm Al2O3 + air plasma. After surface pretreat, a qualitative assessment of surface roughness was done using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). With the aid of bonding jig, veneering composite was applied to each specimen and light polymerized. All completed specimens were placed in 37 ℃ water for 1 day for complete polymerization. Shear bond strength of each group was measured and fracture patterns were classified. Statistical analyses were carried out with One-way ANOVA followed by post-hoc LSD test. Results: Sandblasting + Air Plasma group showed the highest mean bond strength value of (15.881 ± 1.210 MPa) followed by control group (15.048 ± 1.398 MPa) and Air plasma (9.692 ± 1.333 MPa).Conclusion : air plasma treatment of PEKK surface showed less effect on bonding than sandblasting groups.

Streszczenie:
An investigation is conducted into the effects of dimensional variation, material selection, and manufacturing process on the performance characteristics of a self-oscillating fluidic oscillator. Measurements of oscillation frequency, inlet pressure, and jet profile are performed for actuators having varying nozzle and cavity dimensions. Actuators made of aluminum and carbon fiber reinforced polyetherketoneketone are tested, and the effects of varying manufacturing processes between machining, selective laser sintering, stereolithography, and injection molding are assessed. Models based on dimensionless variables are used to characterize the variation in frequency and inlet pressure for a given mass flow rate. Variation of the nozzle geometry and cavity shoulder width influence the oscillation frequency, and variation of nozzle geometry affects the required driving pressure. Dimensional variations due to manufacturing process tolerances are found to affect actuator performance characteristics, while material selection alone does not affect, provided manufacturing to the required tolerances is possible.
