In this doctoral research, we investigate how corporate environmental management (CEM) is taken in account in lending decision-making of banks to corporations in Europe and China. We also identify motivational factors and barriers of including CEM into bank lending. Our thesis is based on three empirical papers. In the first paper, we establish a 20-item evaluation framework of 50 banks in Europe between 2016 and 2018. We also explore how stakeholder power and banks’ characteristics influence banks’ level of CEM inclusion in lending. The second paper explores the perception of CEM in the lending business from the lenders’ perspective with a survey of 110 bank managers in France and Luxembourg in 2019. In addition, the study examines the influence of institutional motivations on bank managers’ perception of CEM. In the third paper, we focus on clarifying the difficulties associated with green credit implementation by investigating 240 Chinese bank managers in 2019. This study identifies challenges Chinese banks currently face according to their different ownership structures. We argue in this thesis that banks, as capital providers to corporations, can play a central role in influencing the decisions of borrowing corporations to reduce their impact on the environment if banks consider including CEM into their lending decision-making

Islamic Banks are thoroughly different from Conventional Banks. They are led by Islamic Finance principles. Indeed, during the decision-making process regarding a loan application from a company, Islamic Banks use their own tools and specific methods. Nevertheless, the two decision-making processes are highly complex. Thus, the aim of our research is to understand the different processes and compare the debt determinants for each kind of bank in so far as they don’t use the same criteria to estimate a company. For example, the risk-sharing, which is one of the features of the Islamic Bank, implies the guarantee of a good Return On Investment. In order to bring some answers relative to the two kind of financing, we exposed the state of the art. We notably mobilized two theories: The Trade Off Theory and the Pecking Order Theory. The regression in panel data confirmed that the Islamic Bank and the Conventional Bank don’t lean on the same determinants in their decision-making process. The specific principles of the Islamic Bank explain this difference

Information asymmetry and lack of collateral are two major reasons that prevent SMEs to access credit markets. Therefore, banks ration credit to SMEs. Given that the contribution of SMEs to economic growth, job creation and innovation, we try to prove the need of public intervention in favor of SMEs' access to bank credit. We analyze the market failure and the benefits of credit guarantee agency for resolution of information asymmetry and lack of collateral. The results show that the credit guarantee system, which is at the centre of the policy of intervention, is an effective way that can solve both problems encountered by SMEs. Thus, in the context of the difficult access of Chinese SMEs to bank credit, the intervention policy in favor of their financing is implemented in China since 1999. The Chinese credit guarantee system is compared with those of other countries to assess the Chinese system. We also carry out the comparison between the performance of the public credit guarantee agency and the commercial credit guarantee agency on taking the establishment of the credit guarantee system in Chengdu as an example
