The β-functions and the c-function are calculated in a two-dimensional field theory where the coupling parameters are functions of fields. The action of the theory is given by a combination of the Polyakov action for string theory and the Zamolodchikov action for the deformation of conformal field theory. The c-function is written as the Landau-Ginzburg type action in terms of the coupling parameter functions. The linear β-functions near fixed points are given by the Klein-Gordon equation. The corresponding well-defined masses are calculated.

✓ Ependymoblastoma is considered to be a primitive malignant glioma with ependymal differentiation. This rare tumor occurs in very early life and shows rapid growth and a diffuse infiltration through the leptomeningeal space. The tumor cells are highly immature, with numerous mitoses and multilayered ependymal rosettes. The ependymoblastoma described in this report was found in a 17-year-old girl. In spite of detailed clinical and postmortem examinations, no definite primary site was identified in the neuraxis. The lesion spread predominantly throughout the leptomeningeal space. Histological analysis strongly suggested that this tumor originated from a heterotopic glial nest in the subarachnoid space. The absence of immunohistochemical neural tissue markers, glial fibrillary acidic protein, S-100 protein, neuron-specific enolase, and neurofilaments ruled out neuronal or glial differentiation. The authors were unable to find any previous report of primary leptomeningeal ependymoblastoma.

The de Broglie-Bohm theory is a hidden-variable interpretation of quantum mechanics which involves particles moving through space along deterministic trajectories. This theory singles out position as the primary ontological variable. Mathematically, it is possible to construct a similar theory where particles are moving through momentum-space, and momentum is singled out as the primary ontological variable. In this paper, we construct the putative particle trajectories for a two-slit experiment in both the position and momentum-space theories by simulating particle dynamics with coherent light. Using a method for constructing trajectories in the primary and non-primary spaces, we compare the phase-space dynamics offered by the two theories and show that they do not agree. This contradictory behaviour underscores the difficulty of selecting one picture of reality from the infinite number of possibilities offered by Bohm-like theories.

It is now commonplace to assert that the contemporary discursive landscape is strewn with an abundance of environmental narratives. Yet these stories about nature seldom speak of the material geographies that link practices of postindustrial consumption to often-distant spaces of commodity supply. A postscarcity narrative in which the availability of natural resources no longer poses a limiting factor on economic growth, therefore, characterizes the current period. In this paper I examine how these narratives of ‘resource triumphalism’ construct the nature of commodities and the places that supply them. Using a range of sources, I illustrate how extractive spaces are constructed through a discursive dialectic which simultaneously erases socioecological histories and reinscribes space in the image of the commodity. The paper advances the claim that, despite their apparent marginality in narratives of postindustrialism, primary commodity-supply zones play a key role within broader narratives about modernity and social life. I draw on Hetherington's reworking of the concept of heterotopia to argue that commodity-supply zones be considered contemporary ‘badlands’, marginal spaces in and through which broader processes of sociospatial ordering are worked out. By examining the geographical imaginaries associated with mineral extraction, I demonstrate how contemporary discourses of commodity-supply space facilitate the material practices through which such ordering occurs.

In order to ease the traffic congestion near primary and secondary schools during the drop-off and pick-up, traffic behavior was analyzed, and a quantitative allocation method for parking spaces was proposed. The proposed method includes three steps. Firstly, a vehicle queuing model based on G/M/N queue theory was built, and MATLAB was employed to simulate the queuing model to obtain a reasonable parking space for drop-off. Secondly, the reasonable parking space for pick-up is determined based on the cumulative number of vehicles. Finally, an optimization model for the scale of total parking spaces and the short-term parking spaces was proposed to achieve maximum utilization of parking spaces. An empirical analysis and verification were conducted based on actual traffic data of schools. The results show that the proposed model can analyze the overall scale of the parking space for primary and secondary school, as well as the scale of the short-term parking spaces. And the proposed scale of the parking space can well meet the actual parking demand.

Exposure to green space has been associated with better physical and mental health. Although this exposure could also influence cognitive development in children, available epidemiological evidence on such an impact is scarce. This study aimed to assess the association between exposure to green space and measures of cognitive development in primary schoolchildren. This study was based on 2,593 schoolchildren in the second to fourth grades (7–10 y) of 36 primary schools in Barcelona, Spain (2012–2013). Cognitive development was assessed as 12-mo change in developmental trajectory of working memory, superior working memory, and inattentiveness by using four repeated (every 3 mo) computerized cognitive tests for each outcome. We assessed exposure to green space by characterizing outdoor surrounding greenness at home and school and during commuting by using high-resolution (5 m × 5 m) satellite data on greenness (normalized difference vegetation index). Multilevel modeling was used to estimate the associations between green spaces and cognitive development. We observed an enhanced 12-mo progress in working memory and superior working memory and a greater 12-mo reduction in inattentiveness associated with greenness within and surrounding school boundaries and with total surrounding greenness index (including greenness surrounding home, commuting route, and school). Adding a traffic-related air pollutant (elemental carbon) to models explained 20–65% of our estimated associations between school greenness and 12-mo cognitive development. Our study showed a beneficial association between exposure to green space and cognitive development among schoolchildren that was partly mediated by reduction in exposure to air pollution.

Abstract With the aim of finding characteristics pointing to the primary site, computed tomography examination from 9 patients with primary brain malignant lymphoma (non-Hodgkin's lymphoma originating in the central nervous system, NHL-CNS) (5 single, 4 multiple lesions) were analyzed. The tumors were usually situated in the basal ganglia, corpus callosum, or cerebellum and were always in contact with either the ependyma of the ventricles or the subarachnoid space. Tumors with widespread infiltration of white matter surrounding the ventricles were characteristic of NHL-CNS. Microscopic examination of 3 autopsy cases revealed infiltration of the subependymal layer of the lateral ventricles and the third and fourth ventricles by lymphoma cells. The entire extent of the choroid plexus was invaded by tumor cells. There were multiple foci of similar cells invading the periventricular white matter. The subarachnoid space was filled with lymphoma cells. In many areas the Virchow-Robin spaces and pial-glial membranes were disrupted, and invasion of the underlying gray matter by tumor cells was seen. The ultrastructure of the blood vessels of NHL-CNS was compared with those in glial, nonglial, and metastatic brain tumors. The essential feature in NHL-CNS was fenestrated vessels. They resembled the blood vessels found in nonglial and metastatic brain tumors, but were distinctly different from those seen in glial tumors with nonfenestrated vessels. Although the following scheme in proposed with reservations, it could account for the sites of origin of NHL-CNS: lymphocytes located in the choroid plexus stroma or the subarachnoid space are activated, caused to proliferate, and finally become neoplastic. Then these cells migrate through the underlying parenchyma along the Virchow-Robin spaces and multiply until they present themselves as primary brain tumors.

Primary spinal primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) of the extradural space are very rare; only 10 cases have been reported in the English language literature. The histopathological diagnosis of primary spinal PNETs has been discussed for many years. These tumors have a rapidly progressive course, and there is no current consensus on the optimal therapeutic approach for these patients. The authors present a case of primary PNET located in the lumbar extradural space in a 13-year-old girl and report the clinical, radiological, histopathological, and surgical findings. They compare their findings with those from the other 10 cases reported in the literature and review relevant literature.

OBJECTIVE: To describe clinical and demographic characteristics of the parapharyngeal space tumors and assess surgical approaches used to treat them at our institution. METHODS: A retrospective and descriptive study of the parapharyngeal space tumors, excluding paragangliomas, treated from June 1991 to October 2002 in a cancer center. The study population included 21 patients, 8 men and 13 women, average age of 41 years (range, 20 to 70 years). Fine needle biopsy was done in 5 (24%) patients. Computed tomography (CT) was performed in all patients, and only a few required magnetic resonance image (MRI). RESULTS: Surgical approaches included transcervical alone or in combination with parotidectomy, transoral, or transmandibular (mandibular swing) approach. Laminectomy and segmentary approaches were also performed in 1 patient each. Sixteen (76%) patients had benign lesions and 5 (24%) had malignant tumors. Neurogenic tumors represented 57% of all tumors. Mean tumor size was of 6.7 cm (range, 3 to 11 cm). Six (29%) patients received adjuvant radiotherapy. Complications occurred in 6 (29%) patients, 4 (19%) of which were nervous injuries associated with peripheral nerve sheath tumors. Median disease-free follow-up survival was 33 months (range, 2 to 184 months) despite being an heterogeneous group of histologies. CONCLUSION: Parapharyngeal space is a rare location for head and neck tumors. Cervical approach should be the first choice for large tumors; transoral approach is reserved for tumors less than 3 cm. Conversion to mandibular swing approach when the cervical approach is not offering proper exposure for tumor resection is indicated. Preoperative histologic diagnosis is not required. Nevertheless, CT scan should always be performed in order to exclude paragangliomas, distinguish prestyloid from poststyloid lesions, and to assess the extension of the tumor as well as its relationship with adjacent structures.

In order to design a large aperture primary mirror with the diameter of 1150 mm, the parameters impacting on gravity deformation of the mirror were analyzed and discussed in detail, including material selection, diameter-thickness ratio, the number of the support points, location selection and lightweight structure, etc. A novel space mirror structure system was put forward, and its back was opened and supported by six points on back. The dynamic and static and thermal characteristics were analyzed based on the finite element method. Analysis results showed the surface figure accuracy reached to RMS 14.5nm under the action of gravity load along the optical axis direction and the first-order natural frequency was 214Hz which met to the designed indexes requirements.

We present an unbiased numerical integration algorithm that handles both low-frequency regions and high-frequency details of multidimensional integrals. It combines quadrature and Monte Carlo integration by using a quadrature-based approximation as a control variate of the signal. We adaptively build the control variate constructed as a piecewise polynomial, which can be analytically integrated, and accurately reconstructs the low-frequency regions of the integrand. We then recover the high-frequency details missed by the control variate by using Monte Carlo integration of the residual. Our work leverages importance sampling techniques by working in primary space, allowing the combination of multiple mappings; this enables multiple importance sampling in quadrature-based integration. Our algorithm is generic and can be applied to any complex multidimensional integral. We demonstrate its effectiveness with four applications with low dimensionality: transmittance estimation in heterogeneous participating media, low-order scattering in homogeneous media, direct illumination computation, and rendering of distribution effects. Finally, we show how our technique is extensible to integrands of higher dimensionality by computing the control variate on Monte Carlo estimates of the high-dimensional signal, and accounting for such additional dimensionality on the residual as well. In all cases, we show accurate results and faster convergence compared to previous approaches.

Thus, the aim of this article is to investigate the potential hurdles and other aspects of importance that must be overcome in order to use RLVs for space tourism flights. The primary ones are social issues (e.g., “Is space tourism ethically acceptable?”), institutional issues (e.g., “Is environmental pollution caused by space tourism more harmful than other emission sources?”), and financial issues (e.g., “Are any potential investors interested in space tourism?”).

AbstractWe have begun a programme to obtain high-precision photometry of bright detached eclipsing binary (dEB) stars with the Wide-field InfraRed Explorer (WIRE) satellite (Bruntt & Buzasi 2006). Due to the small aperture of WIRE, only stars brighter than V = 6 can be observed. We are collecting data for about a dozen dEB targets and here we present preliminary results for three of them. We have chosen dEBs with primary components of B and early A type. One of our aims is to combine the information from the light curve analyses of the eclipses with asteroseismic information from analysis of the pulsation of the primary component.

Leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignant soft-tissue tumor whose cells resemble smooth-muscle tissue. It has been reported to arise in different areas of the head and neck region. Primary leiomyosarcoma of the parapharyngeal space, however, is extremely rare, as only 4 cases have been previously reported to date. We describe the somewhat urgent case of a primary leiomyosarcoma of the right parapharyngeal space in a 30-year-old man. We also review the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges that clinicians face in managing this rare tumor.

✓ Gliomas very rarely arise from the leptomeninges. They can be both solitary and diffuse, and histological examination reveals mostly astrocytic tumors. The authors report a case (the 12th reported in the literature) of a solitary primary glioma of the leptomeninges in a 79-year-old man who presented with repeated seizures. A magnetic resonance image revealed an ill-defined enhancing lesion in the cerebral meninges. Autopsy examination showed a poorly demarcated astrocytoma in the sylvian fissure infiltrating the adjacent subarachnoid space. The literature concerning primary leptomeningeal glioma is reviewed.
