Streszczenie:
The majority of libraries founded in pre-modern Japan can be said to be ‘private’ in origin. They are generally referred to as bunko (literally ‘storehouses of books’) as opposed to toshokan, a post-1870 term for ‘library’. The 14 bunko selected for consideration in this paper hold between them the largest number of rare items extant in Japan today; their varied contents are distinguished not only in terms of early date, beauty and academic value, but also by their excellent state of preservation. They can be grouped, according to the status of their founders within the epoch in which they thrived, as those of medieval clan warriors; shogunal and daimyo libraries of the Edo period; traditional kuge (noble family) libraries; and post-1869 libraries ( zaibatsu collections, libraries formed by intellectuals and wealthy merchants, and Tenri Central Library). The earliest private library in Japan, which can still be seen as reconstructed in the 8th century, is said to have been built by Prince Shotoku (574–622). Japan has a considerable number of literary (as opposed to religious) manuscripts, written soon after the completion of the original texts. It also possesses the world's earliest dated specimen of printed text (764–770). Very large numbers of early books, mss. and archival documents in the bunko have been preserved in excellent condition. Some of the bunko have remained independently private, while others are now managed by trustees or large foundations. However, most now form part of the bigger toshokan belonging to national, prefectural, university or research library institutions. The National Diet Library's directory lists over 2,300 bunko and some 700 toshokan.

Boden, Daniel Paul. "Public-Private Partnerships in the Presidential Library System". Diss., Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/54588.

Streszczenie:
Public-private partnerships have become an important aspect of public administration theory and practice both in the United States and internationally. The National Archives and Records Administration, in partnership with private support foundations, administers 13 individual presidential libraries that make up the Presidential Library System. These privately constructed, publicly supported archives not only preserve official presidential records, but through their museum displays, also offer visitors a glimpse into the life and times of specific presidents. Although many consider these partnerships vital for the continued success of the Presidential Library System, relatively little is known about them. This qualitative case study explores the nature and extent of the public-private partnerships in the Presidential Library System, focusing on libraries established following the Presidential Records Act of 1978. Key themes related to the nature of these simultaneously mandated and voluntary relationships are their informal governance, decentralized administration, and increased reliance on private resources. This research has implications for both theory and practice of public-private partnerships in general as well as those supporting sites of collective memory such as archives, museums, monuments, and memorials.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The thesis investigates private versus public space and the natural tendency for an individual to seek out its own place within a group. More specifically, the project studies whether private and public could not only occupy the same geographic space independently, but also activate one another. A library was chosen as the program for its opportunity to serve as a â third placeâ in the community. A â third placeâ is a neutral ground that is neither a home nor workplace. The benefit of such a place is to stimulate conversation and interaction, to provide a way to either hide or be seen, and to encourage social cohesion as people meet that may not have through normal daily life. The site is on the corner of 12th and H Streets NE in Washington, DC. Its location in a rebounding streetscape demands that the library give the surrounding context a large role in its design. Public space is a priority, and the building is porous to extend the exterior into the interior and vice versa. The libraryâ s ever-changing role in a city inspires flexibility in the design and a life beyond normal library hours.

Streszczenie:
Public libraries have changed tremendously. Libraries used to be places with an organized collection of documents that people would visit and read quietly. However, with the development of digital technology, people are now able to conveniently access the same information from home or elsewhere. Instead of a storehouse of knowledge, a library is now a community center. Preschoolers attend story time with their parents and adults come with friends for entertainment and events. Nowadays, libraries have become a gathering place for social, leisure, self-education and learning activities. In this thesis, I am exploring how to design spaces which can encourage communication between people. According to Jan Gehl's book, Cities for People, watching, listening and experiencing others is the beginning of social communication. After studying precedents, I summarized basic space prototypes which promote communication and then applied them to the design of a large urban public library on a site in Arlington, Virginia. By translating the different prototypes into the design, the resulting building provides spaces with different scales, levels of privacy and qualities to fulfill a wide range of individual needs.

Streszczenie:
Distance learning using telecommunications technologies holds new and challenging promises for library and information science (LIS) education. Pedagogical, technological, cultural/sociopolitical issues and their impact upon the constituents involved--faculty, accrediting bodies, students, employers and educational administration--need to be systematically studied. Findings of a research project that examined one of the human agencies involved in distance learning, full-time faculty at library schools who have taught LIS courses for graduate credit to distance learners using a telecommunications technology, are reported. The primary research questions were exploratory ones that sought answers about the impact of the distance-learning educational model upon faculty. The methodology used was a mix of written survey, telephone, and direct interview techniques. Faculty perceived that their role changed in the distance-learning model from what it was in the traditional classroom-based model. "Teaching is no longer a private act; it is a public performance." Other findings are that more time is required for class preparation; patterns of interaction and communication between students and faculty are different; technical and managerial skills are needed; sociopolitical issues (such as copyright) need to be addressed; and specific knowledge about learning behaviors within this model is needed. Teaching, in this model, is a complex performance that may conflict with the prevailing organizational culture of both the institution and the academic profession. However, the "critical mass" of a library school teaching faculty (conspicuous for its small size) requires several changes if distance learning is to be pursued successfully, and these are discussed briefly. Salient, early historical points about the Board of Education for Librarianship (BEL, American Library Association), American Association of Library Schools (AALS), forerunner to the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE), and the Gaylord Brothers (New York) financed American Correspondence School of Librarianship (ACSL) are included.

Streszczenie:
Library inventories are widely acknowledged for their importance in intellectual history, but there are few detailed studies of library classification in this context. The discussion centres on the inventories of 36 English private libraries from 1521 to 1640, with a view to understanding what could have prompted a compiler to adopt one system of arrangement instead of another. Nine of the inventories are transcribed from unpublished manuscripts, including lists of the books of William Paget, 4th Baron Paget (1617), William Somner (1639), and a previously unidentified catalogue of the books of the physician William Rant (1595). The classification of books was a matter of some concern at the time: the problems raised by library classification were beginning to attract the attention of writers on the subject, and a compiler's approach was not always as haphazard as it may seem at first. On the whole, however, the classification of books was more spontaneous than deliberate, and it is for this reason that it was often finely attuned to the professional concerns and personal interests of owners, as well as to the cultural climate of the time (religious controversies, interest in languages other than Latin). The medieval trivium was losing its momentum in the classifications of the period, and mathematics, for centuries associated with the quadrivium in classifications, was viewed in a new light under the influence of Neo-Platonism. New trends in library classification appeared side by side with age-long practices, thereby underscoring the deeply transitional nature of the period.

Streszczenie:
Entrepreneurship is growing as a cross- and inter-disciplinary area of focus for higher education. From patent and tech transfer offices to business, science, and engineering programs, the demand for entrepreneurship resources and support delivered via libraries is booming. Building library collections to help patrons design, launch, and run successful businesses is challenging: Market research and private equity/venture capital resources arrive at premium prices. Increasingly, these resources must interoperate with software used to clean, analyze, and visualize data. This data is often difficult to find and deploy. Restrictive, corporate-style licenses reflect that new vendors are not yet acclimated to the academic market’s access requirements and licensing constraints. This paper will share a framework for how to understand entrepreneurship in higher education and explain the types of information commonly requested by users. Such information often exists in disciplinary silos, emphasizing the importance of collaborative collection development across subject lines. The authors will explore the unique challenges to building collections that serve patrons developing new ventures. This includes collaborating with external stakeholders to fund resources that have not been traditionally purchased by libraries. Strategies for licensing data and other e-resources in this space will be discussed, including the central complications arising from universities as incubators for for-profit startups. The authors will suggest best practices for building relationships with stakeholders, developing relevant collections and services, and marketing these resources to support communities.
