The majority of libraries founded in pre-modern Japan can be said to be ‘private’ in origin. They are generally referred to as bunko (literally ‘storehouses of books’) as opposed to toshokan, a post-1870 term for ‘library’. The 14 bunko selected for consideration in this paper hold between them the largest number of rare items extant in Japan today; their varied contents are distinguished not only in terms of early date, beauty and academic value, but also by their excellent state of preservation. They can be grouped, according to the status of their founders within the epoch in which they thrived, as those of medieval clan warriors; shogunal and daimyo libraries of the Edo period; traditional kuge (noble family) libraries; and post-1869 libraries ( zaibatsu collections, libraries formed by intellectuals and wealthy merchants, and Tenri Central Library). The earliest private library in Japan, which can still be seen as reconstructed in the 8th century, is said to have been built by Prince Shotoku (574–622). Japan has a considerable number of literary (as opposed to religious) manuscripts, written soon after the completion of the original texts. It also possesses the world's earliest dated specimen of printed text (764–770). Very large numbers of early books, mss. and archival documents in the bunko have been preserved in excellent condition. Some of the bunko have remained independently private, while others are now managed by trustees or large foundations. However, most now form part of the bigger toshokan belonging to national, prefectural, university or research library institutions. The National Diet Library's directory lists over 2,300 bunko and some 700 toshokan.

Purpose There has been a significant change in the provision of library services due to the application of technology to every aspect of library services. This has posed a major challenge to library staff as they need to be abreast with current technologies and their application to library services. One means by which a librarian can overcome this challenge is through professional development (PD) programs. The purpose of this paper is to determine PD opportunities in private university libraries in Ghana. Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional survey of 61 staff and interviews with 20 heads of libraries was conducted to collect data from 25 private universities in Ghana. Findings The study revealed that not all library staff in the private universities were allowed to attend PD programs. None of the private universities studied had a policy on PD and only three institutions made budgetary allocation to PD programs. Majority of the private universities did not have in-house PD programs and there were no means of knowledge sharing in most of the libraries studied. Originality/value In this paper, the researchers identified the major challenges encountered by library staff in private universities in Ghana and propose that librarians should see PD as a part of their own responsibility while, libraries should have a PD policy and make budgetary allocation toward PD.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the use of a virtual private network (VPN) as an additional protective strategy for patrons using library computers. Design/methodology/approach This study is a literature review and commentary on this topic that has been addressed by professionals, researchers and practitioners. Findings Credit must be given to those libraries who have made free VPN services available to their patrons, thus encouraging off-site usage of library resources through this extra layer of authentication in an effort to provide them with a trust level of privacy beyond their standard expectations. Should the library not provide such a service at present, at least an individual can add a VPN to one’s protective bag of tricks to, perhaps, in an effort to place even a limited constraint on those who would do them harm when online. Originality/value The value in exploring this topic is to provide some context and potential options for patrons through their use of a VPN.

The objective of this study was to compare the availability of web 2.0 tools on selected public and private university library websites in Bangladesh. Existing studies of web 2.0 seem to have ignored the possibility of comparing public university library websites with private university library websites. Conducting a study like this will provide an overview about the existing status of Web 2.0 tools. Content analysis was adopted as the method for the study. Twenty university library websites, comprised of ten top-ranked public and ten top-ranked private universities in Bangladesh, were studied for data collection. The findings demonstrate that the use of web 2.0 tools on the selected university library websites is still in its early stage, but it has been growing rapidly. More than 90% of the university libraries apply one or more web 2.0 tools to their websites. The private university library websites are ahead of public university libraries in terms of the integration of web 2.0 tools. Internal applications that are not publicly accessible contain information that may not be collected through content analysis since these links usually cannot be found on library web sites.This study is unique in terms of comparing public and private university library’s web contents. The findings from this comparative analysis will be useful for a university to track their own position and also those are planning to develop a website.

Purpose The study examined the applicability of TAM2 theoretical constructs of social influence and cognitive instrumental factors vis-à-vis the facilitation of perceived usefulness of electronic resources among library personnel in private universities in South-west Nigeria. Design/Methodology/Approach Descriptive research design of correlational type alongside the single-stage random sampling technique were used to select 212 respondents from a population size of 259 library personnel across the 21 private universities in South-west Nigeria. The instrument used to elicit data was the questionnaire. Of the 212 copies of the questionnaire administered, 181 (85.4 per cent) were found valid for analysis. Findings Social influence and cognitive instrumental factors significantly had relationship with and facilitated perceived usefulness of electronic resources. Similarly, the study revealed that cognitive instrumental factors are stronger facilitators of perceived usefulness of electronic resources than social influence factors among library personnel in private universities in South-west, Nigeria. Practical implications Implementation of electronic resources without ascertaining library personnel usefulness perception leads to resource underutilisation and wastage. Management of private university libraries should, therefore, take into cognisance the usefulness perception of library personnel before the implementation of electronic resources for optimum utilisation. Originality/value There is no known research endeavour within the Nigerian context that examined perceived usefulness of electronic resources among library personnel in the private university domain, using the additional theoretical constructs of TAM2 as our research model suggests. This study is, therefore, a pioneering effort towards ascertaining library personnel’s perceived usefulness of electronic resources prior acceptance and use in private university libraries.

The origins of the Slovak National Library lie in the programme for national awakening elaborated by Enlightenment figures, such as Anton Bernolák, at the turn of the eighteenth to the nineteenth century. The article describes the private libraries that eventually, under the care of the cultural institution Matica slovenská, came to form the basis of the national library's collections. The national library itself, although it existed in a non-governmental form from 1941 to 1953 and its functions were then subsumed within Matica slovenská, finally was established as an autonomous state institution in 2000. The library has assumed a leadership role in relation to Slovakia's library network and has prepared for the Government the Strategy for Development of Slovak Librarianship for 2007–13. Having obtained extensive extra-budgetary funding it is driving a number of projects aimed at building and supporting the Information Society in Slovakia.

Most public and private libraries are inclined to adopt using Koha ILS around the globe. However, several Arab schools could not implement the Koha ILS application to automate their school libraries for ease of use. Deploying technology in managing libraries can solve several identified issues in public and private schools. This provides efficiency, ease and improves the performance of library services. Therefore, this paper is based on qualitative research that implements an efficient open-source application known as Koha ILS in two Arab schools, namely Baseerah International School (BIS) and International Modern Arab School (IMAS), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In our analysis, we consider analyzing the proposed Koha ILS by providing backend accessibility so as library consumers can make a further enhancement to upgrade the application. The proposed Koha presents several positive impacts such as an efficient cataloging system, remote management of library consumer records such as books or room reservations and customizable searching interface for efficient usage. The application also presents multiple operating system support for a user’s flexibility. In our results, an analysis was made by comparing the two schools based on gender, position/ranks available in the school library, and IT gadgets. Toward this end, some limitations were noted and recommended as a future research direction.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the websites of university libraries to ascertain that libraries are effectively utilizing their respective websites to provide easy access to all electronic resources available in the library. The objective was also to a represent a comparative analysis between public and private university library websites regarding the presence of electronic resources with their easy access via the internet. For the purpose of this study, a research instrument in the form of comprehensive checklist of eighteen e-resources was developed to evaluate their accessibility in the websites of public and private university libraries. Twenty university library websites, comprised of ten top-ranked public and ten top-ranked private universities in Bangladesh, were studied for data collection using content analysis method. The findings demonstrate that the presence of e-resources on selected university library websites is still in its early stage, but it has been growing rapidly. The private university library websites are ahead of public university libraries in terms of the integration of web-resources. It is hoped that the findings of this paper will serve to assist the University librarians and other similar institutions in choosing, selecting and acquiring the most appropriate format of information resources, and making these available to their websites, which will both satisfy the needs of their library users and fit within their library budget.

This study aims to explain to use a VPN in the UNISMA Library. The research method used is descriptive-qualitative and data was obtained through interviews with five informants, observation, and documentation. Data analysis techniques by collecting data, data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. While the validity of the data was obtained through triangulation. The results showed that the use of VPN in the UNISMA Library to speed up internet connection and data privacy. UNISMA library uses a proxy server router operating system for VPN networks. To be able to make Mikrotik a VPN server, configuration is required which includes IP pool configuration, IP router configuration, PPP configuration, DHCP server configuration, NAT by pass firewall configuration and IP security configuration. The library selection of VPN products considers the aspects of strong authentication, encryption that is strong enough, meets standards, integration with other field network services.

AbstractThe private library of the Syrian playwright and public intellectual Saʿdallāh Wannūs (1941-1997) arrived at the American University of Beirut in 2015. This article sets out to read Wannūs through his library. After presenting a brief overview of the books in Wannūs’ library, their subject matter, and their provenance, it examines personal book inscriptions, which unravel a rich intellectual network and provide insight into Wannūs’ trajectory and recognition as a playwright and public intellectual. It then explores the conditions under which Wannūs’ library came into existence and flourished in a Syria marked by the Baʿth party and the al-Asad regime’s authoritarian control of the political and cultural fields, under which it migrated from Damascus to Beirut in the wake of the 2011 Syrian revolution-turned-war. Wannūs’ library, the article argues, opened an Arabic and world literary space, both physical and metaphorical, from which Wannūs emerged as a modern Arabic and world-renowned playwright.

Streszczenie:

Nowadays, research fellows of the Slavic Fund of the Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences are reconstructing Polichrony Syrku’s book collection that was bought by the Library in 1906–1908. After the scholar’s death, his private library was acquired by Saint Petersburg University and the Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Title-by-title, work with the books will help to provide the insight into the practice of book-exchange among Slavists.

Using the inventory of this seizure as a guide, this note presents a reconstruction of Macintosh’s library and identifies those books that exist today in the collections of the Bibliothèque municipale d’Avignon.

Purpose – Libraries need library leaders who are able to follow the changes and developments and keep pace with them, manage and shape the changes, bring theories and practices together, be solution-oriented, people-oriented, environment-oriented, well-appointed, successful, and creative, because of the rapid developments and continuous changes. In this context, it has become more important for library managers to improve their leadership skills. In the scope of this study, a questionnaire study has been conducted with staff working in 168 different university central libraries. Information form, consisting of 16 questions about librarians’ demographic characteristics and manager satisfaction and Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire is used for data accumulation. The purpose of this paper is to determine library managers’ leadership approaches in private and public university libraries of Turkey and to survey library staff's satisfaction with their managers. Design/methodology/approach – This research is a methodological and descriptive research. Original sample of this research consists of 168 university central library in total (103 public-65 private) and approximately 500 library employee 183 library employees from 20 public university central libraries (108 employees) and 13 private university central libraries responded. Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire, so sample of this research consists of 33 libraries and 183 questionnaire answers. 20.62 percent of the library employees of the target group had responded the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. Findings – In total, 183 employees (108 public and 75 private university central libraries) from 33 university central libraries are responded to Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. Multiple responses were gained from 183 library employees of whom 57.4 percent (105) were female and 42.6 percent (78) were male. When the age distribution is concerned it has determined that 25.1 percent (46) of the participants were centered on 26-34 age group. Other age distributions are defined as in the following: ages 20-25, 19.7 percent (36); ages 31-35, 18.6 percent (34); ages 36-40, 13.7 percent (25); ages 41-45, 15.8 percent (29); and age 46 and over, 7.1 percent. Originality/value – As with all organizations, library managers with leadership qualities are needed in the field of library science. Organizational structures of libraries are constantly changing. Libraries need library leaders who are able to follow the changes and developments and keep pace with them, manage and shape the changes, bring theories and practices together, be solution-oriented, people-oriented, environment-oriented, well-appointed, successful, and creative, because of the rapid developments and continuous changes.

Streszczenie:

The author investigates why the term “scientific library” may not be accepted as a separate class within the classification of libraries based on structural systematization. She also reviews the idea of the scientific library as seen by the national science in the 1930s when this phenomenon was first conceptualized. The concept by Dmitry D. Ivanov is examined; he made distinction between the two library processes: generation of library documents and their delivery to users. The author emphasizes the closeness of D. Ivanov’v ideas to her own interpretation of “the public library” concept. She concludes that the libraries of any structure (public or private individual) may support science though we may not identify a separate class of the scientific libraries within the general library classification based on structural systematization. However, the author does not rule out building an isolated classification where the concept of “the scientific library” will be divided into two types in accordance with the concept structure, namely “the public scientific library” and “private use library”. Further division would be similar to that of the general classification. The author considers the concept of “the research library” to be optional for the national library science.
