Streszczenie:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of farmers’ agricultural production mode transformation, from the perspective of agricultural division of labor and cooperation, on their agricultural production efficiency including technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency. Design/methodology/approach This paper analyzes the impact of the agricultural production mode’s transformation on farmers’ agricultural production efficiency, based on the classical theory of division of labor and specialization, transaction costs and cooperation. It uses 2013 survey data from 396 farms in 15 Chinese provinces to explore the contributing factors of agricultural production efficiency using a double selection model (DSM), which can correct the endogenous selection bias in farmers’ decisions. Findings Farmers that participate in agricultural division of labor and cooperation means transform their agricultural production from a traditional self-sufficient mode to one that is specialized and intensive. Agricultural division of labor measured by farmers’ participation in an agricultural division of labor in the production stages, or in agricultural products, and agricultural cooperation measured by farmers’ participation in farmers’ cooperatives significantly and positively influence their agricultural production efficiency after correcting farmers’ endogenous selection bias. Originality/value This paper proposes a unified framework to analyze the impact of farmers’ agricultural production mode transformation on their production efficiency. Further, it builds a DSM for an empirical analysis to avoid the endogenous biases in farmers’ self-selection behavior. This paper also provides ways for policy makers to improve farmers’ agricultural production efficiency from the modern agricultural production perspective.

Streszczenie:
A global transformation from Industry 4.0 towards Industry 5.0 will soon take place. Such transformations are intrinsic to human and sustainable value creation. An increasing number of companies, recognising this imminent trend, will need to transform their current classical, solely profit-oriented business models into sustainable business models that also target human, social, and environmental aspects. Various frameworks already exist that support the design of sustainable business models. Practical applications of these frameworks and research on the transformation process in the production domain, which places a special focus on small and medium enterprises, is still scarce. This paper presents the first results from a sustainable business model transformation project on a European SME, which produces 3D printers. The research method applies a single case study design. The study was based on publicly available information and qualitative data, obtained through interviews and workshops carried out on an executive management level.

Streszczenie:
The article is devoted to the opportunities of author’s transaction-contract approach application. The approach assumes that direct assessment can be done by structural elements with transformation of individual efforts of economic agents in collective efforts based on change of transactions and transformations in contract as an institutional agreement. In contract relations economic agents make efforts (in contract theory terminology) for product transformation as well as transaction efforts, which in series replaces each other. All the efforts can be assessed by costs and benefits, which economic agents gain as a result of economic relations. In the article it is discussed the questions of theoretical and practical application of transaction-contract approach to analysis of different economic spheres. Economic spheres can be divided based on the proportions of transaction and transformation on every stage of production process. The author refers to transaction sphere production processes in which the share of transaction efforts exceeds the share of transformation efforts. It means that the growth of total product is largely due to the transactional component. The author discusses the possibilities of using the approach to the research of transactional and transformational types of the production process, where, as an example, are given, among other questions, the possibilities of analysis of merit goods production, as well as examples of research and modeling of opportunistic behavior at the intra-company level.

Due to the expansion of nearby mining operations, the city of Kiruna, an arctic city in Sweden, has been undergoing a massive urban transformation, led by the mining company, Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB), which is the largest iron ore producer in the EU. This paper explores this relocation in a three-sphere transformation framework that has sustainability as the outcome (practical sphere), and analyses it as a socio-spatial transformation process, including political decisions as its driving forces (political sphere), to examine how this outcome and decisions represent individual and collective values (personal sphere). The analysis of three spheres is used as a tool to understand how and why Kiruna’s urban transformation is deemed to be sustainable, as it claims, and which it is being globally acknowledged for. Methods include analysis of Kiruna’s new master plan, media representations, and interviews with key actors of the project, who include municipal planners; the mining company’s planning developers; consultants, as the designers of ‘Kiruna 4-ever’ and the new city center; as well as the city’s residents. The analysis is a critique of the approaches that fit this project into either the critique of market-led spatial production, or as an example of best practice, based on its participatory processes. Results indicate that although Kiruna’s relocation is claimed to be a transformation of collective values, practical and technical transformations were dominant, which represents only partial responses in the framework. Therefore, a multi-voice narrative challenges the sustainability of Kiruna’s transformation.

In this article, we address how the production of model transformations (MT) can be accelerated by automation of transformation synthesis from requirements, examples, and metamodels. We introduce a synthesis process based on metamodel matching, correspondence patterns between metamodels, and completeness and consistency analysis of matches. We describe how the limitations of metamodel matching can be addressed by combining matching with automated requirements analysis and model transformation by example (MTBE) techniques. We show that in practical examples a large percentage of required transformation functionality can usually be constructed automatically, thus potentially reducing development effort. We also evaluate the efficiency of synthesised transformations. Our novel contributions are: The concept of correspondence patterns between metamodels of a transformation. Requirements analysis of transformations using natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML). Symbolic MTBE using “predictive specification” to infer transformations from examples. Transformation generation in multiple MT languages and in Java, from an abstract intermediate language.

Streszczenie:
Plastid division, sustained by the equilibrium expression and coordination of plastid division genes is vital for the maintenance of plastid populations in dividing plant cells. Macrochloroplasts (MCP), the occurrence of one or a few chloroplasts per cell is due to the imbalance in the expression of plastid division genes. Because of the MCP size and number it was proposed that they may provide better targets for the plastid transformation than the normal (WT) chloroplasts and result in better plastid transformation frequencies. The objective of this research was to produce transgenic plants containing macrochloroplasts by nuclear transformation and then to use these plants as a model for the development of plastid transformation of crop species. By using AtFtsZ1-1 and AtMinD1 as query sequences in the TIGR (U.S.A) and ASTRA (Australia) Brassica oleracea EST databases, this project resulted in the isolation of cauliflower FtsZ1-1 (EU684588) and MinD (EU684589) genes. In addition, AtFtsZ1-1 was used as a control gene for comparison to the cauliflower FtsZ1-1. Binary vectors were constructed to express these genes in tobacco and cauliflower either by Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated or PEG-mediated transformation methods. Transgenic tobacco and cauliflower plants with abnormal chloroplasts (MCP, minichloroplasts, honeycomb or doughnut shaped chloroplasts, uneven surface membrane chloroplasts) were developed. Furthermore, the transgenic tobacco and cauliflower plants were examined by PCR, RT-PCR and Southern blotting. In addition, th ese plants were also analysed for the different abnormal chloroplast phenotypes by fluorescence microscopy. This project also generated the first plastid transformants from macrochloroplast bearing tobacco plants via biolistics. After one round of regeneration homoplasmic plastid transformants were obtained from both WT chloroplast and MCP tobacco plants. The homoplasmic nature of plastid transformants were confirmed by PCR and Southern blotting. Plastid expression of GFP in WT and MCP was confirmed by fluorescence/confocal microscopy and western blot analysis. This project showed for the first time the characterisation of cauliflower FtsZ1-1 and MinD plastid division genes in homologous and heterologous systems (cauliflower and tobacco). Moreover, obtaining homoplasmic plastid transformant shoots from one round of regeneration from the MCP containing tobacco plants is reported for the first time in this study. In addition this study explored the effect of transgene expression level on the chloroplast abnormality, highlighting the importance of analysing transgenic tobacco and cauliflower plants at the protein lev el specifically with regard to plastid division genes. The maintenance of MCP phenotype in the regenerated shoots and the requirement of standardisation of MCP containing plants via biolistics for increasing the plastid transformation frequency were also examined.

Streszczenie:
The goal of this thesis is to study the transformation of architectural space with the aid of artistic production. By questioning architectural production as a non-static process open to alteration and intervention, this condition is claimed to enlarge the frontiers of architecture in terms of interdisciplinary contributions and new design methods. Inspired by the course ARCH 524, conducted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aysen Savas in the METU Department of Architecture, this study aims to understand the possible ways of transforming architectural space by the defined function of exhibition. The condition of exhibiting is claimed to manifest a &ldquo
temporary&rdquo
and reciprocal relation between the architectural space and the artwork
therefore, it redefines architectural space as a temporary entity open to intervention. For this reason, &ldquo
site-specific artwork&rdquo
is believed to play a pragmatic role in the creation of the &ldquo
new space&rdquo
. This study will focus on the selected works of the artist Esther Stocker. Stocker&rsquo
s productions offer systematic and analytic (re)readings that analyze and decipher spatial qualities. Her productionsare claimed to shift the conventional definitions of architectural terminology and introduce physical, visual and cultural/social levels of understanding both for the built, and the yet-to-be-built space. Throughout this study, the transformation process is commonly referred to as (re)construction, and/or (re)definition, which will, at the end of the process, generate a &ldquo
new space&rdquo
open to continuous transformation. The analysis of the same space will provide new intellectual agents for the promotion of theoretical methods in architectural education and practice.

Streszczenie:
There are scholarly studies on various aspects of eighteenth-century tailoring and men's clothing, but none on the equally important branch of tailoring - staymaking. For most of the century male staymaking tailors created the most intimate garment for women - stays - raising questions related to gender, class, identity-formation, bodily health and aesthetics on the one hand, and, on the other hand, to production and consumption of stays, and the degree to which they transformed the body at all stages of the life cycle. Male staymakers did not have a monopoly on the trade, however, as females began to take a primary role in staymaking during the last two decades of the century, giving rise to questions about the masculinazation and feminization of stays-design as the century drew to a close. Moving thematically from production to consumption, the thesis seeks to make an original and valuable contribution to the place of a little-known trade in the trades history of Britain in general, and of London in particular. In doing so, it makes a number of discoveries, including the periodization of the separation of staymaking from tailoring, the gender differentiation of staymakers late in the century, the placement of the staymaker in his/her urban and working environment, details of stays-wearing through the life cycle, staymakers' relationships with their clients, the masculinization and feminization of stays-design, and the aesthetic, seductive and erotic qualities of stays, among others. The thesis takes a novel approach to its choice of sources, introducing an invaluable staymaker's diary never before used as a source of trades history, and calling upon the Old Bailey Proceedings, for example. The methodology used is innovative, as well. Combining a traditional textual approach with methods centering on material-culture and visual-imagery analyses allows for the contextualization of the staymaking trade from the widest possible perspective. The thesis argues that staymaking had a profound influence on transforming the female body to conform to fashionable silhouettes in Britain 1680 - 1810. In discussing relationships between working staymakers and their clients from the upper, middling and lower sorts, it illuminates wider issues pertaining to gender, class and society overall.

Streszczenie:
Urgent global problems-whether military conflicts, economic insecu rities, immigration controls or mass inca rceration-not only call for new modes of po litical action but also demand new forms of knowledge. For if knowledge frameworks both shape the horizons of social intelli gi bil ity and chart t he realms of political possibility, then epistemological interventions constitute a crucial part of social change. Social movements play a key role in th is work by engaging in dissident knowledge practices that open up space for political transformation. But what are the processes and conditions through which social movements generate new ways of knowing?'What is politically at sta~e in the various knowledge strategies that activists use to generate social change? Despite a growing lite ratu re on the role of epistemological dimensions of protest, social movement studies tend to neglect specific questions of epistemological change. Often treating knowledge as a resource or object rather than a power relation and a socia l practice, social movement scholars tend to focus on content rather than production, frames rather than practices, taxonomies rather than processes. Missing is a more dynamic account of the conditions, means and power relations through which transformative knowledge practices come to be constituted and deployed. Seeking to better understand processes of epistemological transformation, this thesis explores the relationship between social movements, knowledge production and pol itical change. Starting from an assumption that knowledge not only represents the world, but also works to constitute it, th is thesis examines the role of social movement knowledge practices in shaping the conditions of political possi bility. Drawing from the context of grassroots queer, transgender and feminist organizing around issues of prisons and border controls in North America, the project explores how activists generate new forms of knowledge and forge new spaces of political possibility. Working through a series of concepts-transformation, resistance, exp_erience, co-optation, so lidarity and analogy-this thesis explores different ways of understanding processes of epistemological change with in social movement contexts. It considers processes that facil itate or enable epistemological change and those that lim it or prohibit such change. Bringing together a range of theoretical perspect ives, includ ing femin ist, queer, crit ica l race and post-structuralist analyses, and drawing on interviews with grassroots activists, the thesis explores what is politica lly at stake in the different ways we conceptua lise, imagine and engage in processes of epistemological change.

Raytheon - Network Centric Systems (NCS) division develops and produces mission solutions for networking, command and control, battlespace awareness, and air traffic management. The facility in Largo, Florida, produces radios and their associated equipment for programs in the NCS division. The Largo facility uses traditional Material Resource Planning (MRP) systems to drive supply chain and production output. This push system runs directly against lean principles of flow and pull during Raytheon's continuous lean improvements. This tension makes the lean transition difficult for all aspects of the business. This thesis specifically examines the reduction in throughput variability that comes with lean controls and shows that the lean principles of flow, pull and pursuit of perfection help MRP be more accurate by providing the stability required for the MRP system. This is especially important during the transition between a classic MRP push system and the more efficient use of material planning available in a lean organization. Results of the alignment between operations and MRP include lower lead times, lower inventory and lower cost production. This thesis also explores the fundamental cultural, structural and political issues with implementing certain lean changes and the effects of these issues on variability of the system.

Streszczenie:
Cost effective production of biofuel from plant biomass (second generation biofuels) is currently a key challenge. To achieve this, accessibility of plant cell wall polysaccharides to chemical, enzymatic and microbial digestion could be improved by altering lignin structure and composition or by reducing lignin content, as lignin is one cell wall component that has already been shown to contribute to biomass recalcitrance. Therefore, this thesis reports the genetic manipulation of lignin biosynthesis through down-regulation of cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) genes in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Barley has been chosen as the target plant for lignin manipulation for a few reasons: it is a major cereal crop that produces large amounts of lignocellulosic plant biomass that can potentially be used as animal feed or to produce second generation biofuels and also because it is a model grass for other bioenergy crops. CAD, as the final enzyme in the lignin pathway, is a perfect target for lignin manipulation. Characterised CAD mutants and transgenics have shown that down-regulation of CAD improves digestibility and does not influence plant growth and fertility. Due to the difficulty and complexity of transformation of monocot species, there are only a few reports describing down-regulation of CAD in monocots, and none in barley. Here, in this thesis, lignin was altered by down-regulating CAD genes using an RNAi construct with part of the HvCAD2 gene, the gene which has the highest expression level of all CAD genes. Transgenic barley plants showed reduced enzyme activity in the T0 generation (31% compared to EV plants) and enzyme activity was reduced even more in the T1 (to 3%) and T2 (to 2%) generations. The HvCAD2 RNAi barley lines had similar or slightly reduced Klason total lignin contents relative to control plants, but lignin structure and composition were altered. The RNAi plants had lower thioacidolysis yields, S/G ratio was reduced (1.59 in the empty vector controls versus 0.96–1.21 in the transgenic barley plants), the relative frequency of S units was reduced by 11–20%, the proportion of G units was increased by 17–32%, there was increased sinapaldehyde accumulation in lignin and ferulic acid abundance was reduced relative to control plants. Analysed transgenic barley plants had an orange stem phenotype. Growth season and conditions hugely affected the intensity of the phenotype. Because lignin plays a major role in culm strength and pathogen resistance, the influence of down-regulation of CAD on these features was characterised. The changed physicochemical nature of cell walls in HvCAD2 RNAi lines does not decrease the strength of the straw and does not decrease the resistance to the biotrophic Blumeria graminis and to the hemibiotrophic Rhynchosporium commune pathogens. The modified cell walls in the HvCAD2 RNAi lines had moderately improved sugar release for biofuel production. This study proves that it is possible to down-regulate CAD in cereal crops in order to change lignin structure and composition in plants without a negative impact on plant growth, fertility or pathogen resistance.

Streszczenie:
We study the role of multinationals (MNCs) in facilitating firm-level and aggregate structural transformation. Using a stylized model of multinational production and trade, we show that an inward multinational liberalization in the manufacturing sector raises employment in host country firms, and decreases manufacturing employment, while also raising services employment, in the parent firms. We also show the conditions under which aggregate structural transformation occurs. We test the models firm-level predictions by using confidential microdata from Japan. We study the response of Japanese MNC parents and their affiliates in China to an exogenous change in China's openness to foreign direct investment (FDI). We find that in industries where inward FDI was encouraged, Japan MNCs' affiliates in China experienced increases in their employment. We also find that MNC parents in the encouraged industries experienced decreases in home country manufacturing employment and increases in home country services and R&D employment. Finally, using microdata for several advanced and middle-income countries, we decompose the change in overall manufacturing employment shares into MNC and non-MNC components. We find a significant role for MNCs across all countries, suggesting the mechanism we highlight is an important global driver of structural transformation.

Streszczenie:
This paper introduces a sectoral model for the Spanish economy that allows a better understanding of the propagation of sector-specific shocks taking into account different network interdependencies. In particular, the model features sector interactions along several dimensions in an open economy setting, either in the provision of intermediate inputs and capital goods or competing in the labour market. This framework is flexible enough to provide insights into the effect of several policy-relevant shocks, such as global value chain bottlenecks, increases in production costs in energy-intensive sectors or large public investment programmes. In order to illustrate the role of such sectoral interactions, we consider a sectorisation of Next Generation EU (NGEU) funds based on Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (RTRP) which will mobilize €69.5 bn in grants. According to our findings, the average impact over a 5-year horizon is 1.15% of GDP if we consider only the direct effect of the investment programmes and expenditure plans, but it increases to 1.75% if we take into account the increase in the productive capacity of certain sectors and its propagation through the production network. Moreover, the resulting expansion is particularly strong in sectors highly dependent on high-skilled labour, such as IT and professional services, which might lead to shortages of high-skilled workers, reducing the aggregate impact on GDP by 25%.

Streszczenie:
The commercialisation of cocoa production in Ghana has a long history dating back to the nineteenth century. The process of commercial development in cocoa is well documented and provides an alternative mode to contemporary models of commercialisation rooted in the adoption of modern technology and integration of farmers into markets. This working paper critically analyses frameworks for agricultural commercialisation in cocoa through intensification based on the uptake of synthetic inputs and hybrid seeds, by placing agricultural development within a broader framework of the historical development of the frontier in Ghana, and the related problems of ecological and economic crises. The study examines access to land, labour and technology, and how the complex interactions of scarcity of access to physical resources and labour influence farmers’ farming strategies and adoption of technology.

Streszczenie:
Original objectives . 1. Test anti-fungal gene products for activity against Uncinula necator, Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus stolonifer and Botrytis cinerea. 2. For Agrobacterium transformation, design appropriate vectors with gene combinations. 3. Use biolistic bombardment and Agrobacterium for transformation of important cultivars. 4. Characterize gene expression in transformants, as well as level of powdery mildew and Botrytis resistance in foliage of transformed plants. Background The production of new grape cultivars by conventional breeding is a complex and time-consuming process. Transferring individual traits via single genes into elite cultivars was proposed as a viable strategy, especially for vegetatively propagated crops such as grapevines. The availability of effective genetic transformation procedures, the existence of genes able to reduce pathogen stress, and improved in vitro culture methods for grapes, were combined to serve the objective of this proposal. Effective deployment of resistance genes would reduce production costs and increase crop quality, and several such genes and combinations were used in this project. Progress The efficacy of two-way combinations of Trichoderma endochitinase (CHIT42), synthetic peptide ESF12 and resveratrol upon the control of growth of Botrytis cinerea and Penicillium digitatum were evaluated in vitro. All pairwise interactions were additive but not synergistic. Per objective 2, suitable vectors with important gene combinations for Agrobacterium transformation were designed. In addition, multiple gene co-transformation by particle bombardment was also tested successfully. In New York, transformation work focused on cultivars Chardonnay and Merlot, while the technology in Israel was extended to 41B, R. 110, Prime, Italia, Gamay, Chardonnay and Velika. Transgenic plant production is summarized in the appendix. Among plants developed in Israel, endochitinase expression was assayed via the MuchT assay using material just 1-5 days after co-cultivation. Plants of cv. Sugraone carrying the gene coding for ESF12, a short anti-fungal lytic peptide under the control of the double 358 promoter, were produced. Leaf extracts of two plants showed inhibition zones that developed within 48 h indicating the inhibitory effect of the leaf extracts on the six species of bacteria. X fastidiosa, the causal organism of Pierce's disease, was very sensitive to leaf extracts from ESF12 transformed plants. Further work is needed to verify the agricultural utility of ESF12 transformants. In New York, some transformants were resistant to powdery mildew and Botrytis fruit rot. Major conclusions, solutions, achievements and implications The following scientific achievements resulted from this cooperative BARD project: 1. Development and improvement of embryogenesis and tissue culture manipulation in grape, while extending these procedures to several agriculturally important cultivars both in Israel and USA. 2. Development and improvement of novel transformation procedures while developing transformation techniques for grape and other recalcitrant species. 3. Production of transgenic grapevines, characterization of transformed vines while studying the expression patterns of a marker gene under the control of different promoter as the 35S CaMV in different part of the plants including flowers and fruits. 4. Expression of anti-fungal genes in grape: establishment of transgenic plants and evaluation of gene expression. Development of techniques to insert multiple genes. 5. Isolation of novel grape specific promoter to control the expression of future antimicrobial genes. It is of great importance to report that significant progress was made in not only the development of transgenic grapevines, but also in the evaluation of their potential for increased resistance to disease as compared with the non engineered cultivar. In several cases, increased disease resistance was observed. More research and development is still needed before a product can be commercialized, yet our project lays a framework for further investigations.

Streszczenie:
Most of the objectives that were outlined in the original proposal have been met with two exceptions. Briefly, our goals were to: (1) constract transgenic tobacco plants which overproduce one or more of the enzymatic oxyradical scavengers and associated ancillary enzymes, including superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and monodehydrascorbate reductase; (2) evaluate the tolerance of these transgenic plants to oxidative stress; and (3) extend these studies to an agronomically important crop such as citrus. As can be seen i the following pages, our objectives (1) and (2) have been achieved, although transgenic lines overexpressing phospholipid hydroperoxidase glutathione peroxidase (PHGPX) were not obtained and our evidence to date suggests that constitutive overexpressing of the enzyme is probably lethal. Howeever, transgenic tobacco expressing the antisense construct for PHGPX were obtained. Tobacco plants overexpressing ascorbate peroxidase and those sensesuppressing monodehydroascorbate reductase are more tolerant to oxidative stress, as mediated by the redox-cycling agent paraquant; in contrast, plants expressing the PHGPX-antisense construct are more sensitive to paraquat. Additional research is warranted on each of the six types of transgenic lines which we generated with regard to their tolerance to saline stress. Until recently, attempts to transform citrus were not very successful, and thus additional attention is currently being directed at objective (3). We are optimistic that use of the plant transformation vector, pBIN, will lead to stable transgenic citrus, as preliminary experiments demonstrate stable expression of the GUS reporter gene. Other important contributions resulting from this BARD project include the biochemical characterization of the first plant phospholipid glutathione peroxidase and the biochemical and molecular analysis of another key antioxidant enzyme, monodehydroascorbate reductase. Overall this BARD-supported project was quite successful, and the biological resource of numerous transgenic lines which have altered levels of antioxidant enzymes should be valuable for years to come.

Streszczenie:
Agricultural transformation towards intensive commercial production is a key facet of current development strategies pursued by African governments, aimed at improving welfare outcomes of farm households. However, in Zimbabwe, there is concern that increased commercialisation, especially through tobacco production, may have resulted in increased food and nutrition insecurity in the smallholder farming sector. Using data from two rounds of surveys conducted in 2018 and 2020 of smallholder farmers, this study examined the impacts of cash crop and food-based commercialisation pathways on seasonal food insecurity in rural households of Mazowe district.
