Protein and amino acid ingestion has been investigated as an aid in recovery from eccentric exercise induced muscle damage. However, the results of the studies are conflicting. There are two studies in this thesis that examine the effect of ingesting branched chain amino acids (BCAA) and protein following eccentric exercise in untrained males. Ingestion of BCAA resulted in a decrease in muscle soreness. However ingestion of whey protein isolate resulted in reduced muscle soreness and a reduction in the decrement of muscle function. The relationship between dietary nutrient inputs, particularly energy and protein, and their partition between fibre, meat and other non-meat components in British fibre producing goats was studied in a series of four experiments. Experiment 1 indicated that increasing dietary energy concentration from 10.2 to 11.9 MJ ME/kg dry matter (DM) significantly (P &'60 0.05 to 0.001) improved liveweight gain, feed conversion efficiency, carcass weight, cross sectional area of M.longissimus dorsi , and increased fat thickness over N.serratus dorsalis . <p>Forty-two high producing Holstein cows were paired by body condition and mature equivalent milk production and fed either a high or low energy complete ration ad libitum during the last 16-20 weeks of lactation. Obesity and particularly visceral adiposity are important factors in insulin resistance, and contribute to blunted protein anabolism that is observed with diabetes. This insulin sensitivity of protein metabolism in obese adults with type 2 diabetes, does not improve when normalizing glycemia with medication, although rates of protein turnover decrease.
