A crucial and hitherto unpublished insider’s account of the living conditions of seafarers in te late l7 century, the diaries and relations of a travel in East India in 1690 offer a wealth of information and resources on the subject. Young officer Robert Challe, navy guards Pouchot de Chantassin and Lenfant, Father Charmot — member of les Missions Etrangères (Foreign Missions) — and a Jesuit priest, Father Tachard give us a realistic description of everyday life on the first French watercraft armed for the East India Company (the Compagnie des Indes Orientales) and Louis XIV. Seafaring, battles, storms, political strife and trade wars, together with the discovery of an exotic world “discovered” for the first time, make up the thread of te narrative. Later, in an account dated 1721, however, the ageing Challe’s narrative style is found to have evolved into novel-writing. This specific study of maritime writing thus shows once more the ambiguity of any travel narrative

Streszczenie:
Between 1299 and 1369 there was a continuous succession of queen consorts and queen dowagers. Margaret of France was queen consort between 1299 and 1307 and died in 1318, Isabella of France was queen consort between 1308 and 1327 and she died in 1358 and Philippa of Hainault was queen consort between 1328 and 1369 when she died. A continuous transition between queens is particularly exciting for a study of queenship because an analysis of these queens' activities provides a unique opportunity to form conclusions about nonnative queenly behaviour, and to determine the extent to which their activities depended on circumstance and inclination. The overlapping of consorts and dowagers also allows us to study the relationships between these women. Yet there has been no full-length study which takes advantage of this exceptional period in late medieval history. This present study proposes to do so, and frames this examination around four major themes: gender; status; the concept of the crown; and power and authority. By using administrative, visual and literary sources this study seeks to address the themes of gender, status, medieval concepts of the crown and power and authority. Through these themes it expounds upon the relationship of the ideology of queenship and the historical actions of three fourteenth-century queens. This thesis will demarcate when the queen's power is symbolic or achieved through her own initiative. It examines the extent to which gender and status dictated the nature of her power and authority, and it will use the concept of the crown to assess her royal status. It acknowledges that gender inequality existed in the medieval period; the queen could not rule in her own right, nor act as chancellor, treasurer or member of parliament. However, instead of emphasizing the queen's independence or her constraints and limitations, this study seeks to provide an even-handed analysis of how the queen acted. Overall, this thesis concludes that not only did the queen remain a visible part of the centralized monarchy, she also held official roles within government She was embedded in the administrative apparatus of government as a wife, a mother and a widely recognized representative of the crown.

Clifford-Amos, Terence. "The geography of the Faerie Queene". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1999. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4145/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The task has been to show that Spenser imagined Faeryland according to his own travel experience in England. The geography of The Faerie Queene 1 - the only book of the poem not set in the South, and the only book without coastlines - reveals Spenser's experience and interest in the North and the Northern Rebellion of 1569. We explore The Faerie Queene 1 (possibly quite extensively planned and drafted before the poet set sail for Ireland in August 1580) as a discrete geography, finding it quite unlike the terrains of the books which follow. This is so because Spenser almost certainly had never gained any substantive travel experience in the South West, where are found the coastlines he came to know during his brief and prolonged returns to England during 1580-96. Written during Spenser's life in Ireland, The Faerie Queene 2-6 is enacted on English soil where, I argue, Spenser's journeys to and from the South West - the coastlines, forestry, settlements and towns - can often be traced and mapped in the journeys of the poem's travellers. The travels of Artegall, Britomart, Guyon and Calidore establish the western terrain and the western and southern coasts of the poem. Such is the importance of the travels of these knights to the poem's geography, that we can establish Artegall's journey to the West Coast, and Britomart's journey to the same place. Britomart knows the coast to which Artegall is bound is the place where she will find him. Distractions during the journey keep him from the 'appointed tide' and Britomart having arrived at Artegall's intended coast, journeys inland from the Rich Strond (Plymouth) to find him - somewhere along the western route between London and Plymouth.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Rocks of the Quesnel Lake area are divided into three units: unit 1, a continental margin sequence; unit 2, The Crooked Amphibolite (an ocean-floor sequence); and unit 3, the Quesnel sedimentary and volcanic sequence. Two conglomerate localities within unit 3 contain clasts identified as being derived from deformed rocks of units 1 and 2. Deformation of the combined package of units 1 and 2 must have accompanied the emplacement of unit 2 onto unit 1 sometime between the deposition of unit 2 (Mississippian - Permian) and the deposition of unit 3 (Triassic - Jurassic). Rocks of unit 1 have been divided by earlier workers into the Barkerville and Cariboo terranes, separated by the Pleasant Valley Thrust. An extensive review shows that the two terranes are stratigraphically similar and share most of their structural history. The Pleasant Valley Thrust, if it exists, is an extremely early structure. These data do not satisfy the criteria for naming these units 'terranes'. The rocks of unit 1 and 2 experienced an extra phase of deformation not seen in rocks of unit 3. A total of five phases of folding are present. Phases 1 through 4 are approximately coaxial with northwest axes and variably oriented axial planes. Phase 5 has northeast trending axes and vertical axial planes. F₁ is seen in units 1 and 2 only and is visible in outcrop as rootless isoclinal folds and a transposed foliation. In thin section, S₁ is only preserved within the earliest garnet porphyroblasts. F₂ folding is the major deformational event. Peak metamorphism accompanied and outlasted it. Major F₂ folds are present in the field and are accompanied by an axial planar foliation. In thin section, S₂ wraps around earlier porphyroblasts but is overgrown by later ones (staurolite, kyanite). F₃ folding is responsible for the major map-scale structures. It postdated the peak of metamorphism and isograds axe folded by it. In thin section S₃ is commonly a crenulation cleavage or transposed foliation. Some late mineral growth accompanied the early stages of F₃. F₄ and F₅ are buckle folds and kinks and may be conjugate fold sets from a single deformational event. They are not generally visible in thin section. The assemblage silica - garnet - aluminosilicate - mica (SGAM) is common in amphibolite grade meta-pelitic rocks, and can be used as a thermobarometer if the activities of muscovite and biotite can be calculated accurately. A new method of calculating the ideal activity of mica components is proposed. Standard models do not adequately account for the degree of coupled substitution that takes place. The proposed method stores the site occupancies in a 4-dimensional array and manipulates the entries to satisfy three criteria. 1: That non-permitted ionic configurations (species) have an activity of zero. 2: That the sum of all activities is unity. 3: That the sum of all activities of species containing a particular ion in a particular site is the site occupancy of that ion. The method is computationally simple and yields activity values that satisfy the distribution of species equations of an ideal complex solution model. Standard state properties for annite and Margules solution parameters for biotite are determined using mathematical programming techniques on published experimental and natural assemblage data. Published volume data indicate that Fe-Mg mixing in biotite is ideal. The data permit the calculation of four Margules parameters (MgTi, FeTi, MgAl, FeAl). The differences MgTi - FeTi and MgAl - FeAl are similar to those found by previous workers but the treatment of the data suggests moderately large individual values for the Margules parameters (up to 75 kJ/mol). Using these activity models the SGAM thermobarometer is applied to several sets of published analyses which show that this calibration offers distinct improvements over previous calibrations. Pressures determined using the new calibration are consistent with other barometers and the aluminosilicate polymorph present. In addition, several data sets show field gradients, particularly in P, not previously recognized and which agree with field observations. The SGAM barometer applied to the analytical data from the Quesnel Lake area yields pressures and temperatures that are consistent with the mapped isograds. The pressure and temperature gradients indicate that the final setting of the thermobarome-ter was diachronous across the area and during the early stages of F₃ folding. Hot rocks in cores of anticlines 'set' at later times and at shallower depths than cooler rocks in adjacent synclines. Tight spacing of isograds is more consistent with post-metamorphic folding than with high thermal gradients.

The Almighty Latin King and Queen Nation, one of New York’s largest street gangs allowed me through the Street Organization Project to interview and conduct field research with their female members during the years of 1997-1999. This paper is a direct result of my research and it examines the processes leading Latinas to join the female branch of the Almighty Latin King and Queen Nation, show the changing nature of gang female participation and the motives for continuing within the gang.

The New York State Latin Queens were founded in 1991 after a manifesto for the Latin Queens was penned by King Blood, the First President of the New York State Latin Kings. Until that time, there had been no organized group for women who wanted to join the Latin Kings. They were called the Naia Tribe. After 1996, the role of the Queens began to expand with the ascension of King Tone to the Inca position (First President) of the New York State. Under King Tone’s leadership, the rules of the Queens were amended. For the first time the Queens began to put forward their own demands, which challenged some of the discriminatory rules and male privileges of the group

The Latin Queens I interviewed were from different areas in New York with a predominantly Puerto Rican and Dominican background. The respondents described their motives for joining either directly or indirectly under a multitude of different themes that spoke to the effects of systematic physical abuse, economic deprivation, health problems, emotional trauma, cultural denial and family disintegration. I will analyze these in greater depth by breaking them down and contrasting the findings to the four themes also identified in the literature as: issues of identity, family pressures, economic survival and family/community networks.

Streszczenie:
Thesis (MA)-- Stellenbosch University, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Although The Faerie Queene was written in 1589 as a commentary on and criticism of issues which would concern many sixteenth-century Protestant subjects of Queen Elizabeth of England, Spenser creates in his text worlds which even a twentieth-century reader can find significant. Allegorical representations, mythical, historical and poetical figures and pastoral retreats, for example, not only reflect the harsh realities which sixteenth-century English society experienced, but also offer the possibility of escape to worlds of divine and charitable interaction. Spenser, drawing on Philip Sidney's An Apology for Poetry, constructs an ideal world where there is no strife, only peaceful interaction and stability, as opposed to the problems and fears of the "real" world of sixteenth-century England. The story of Faery Land is, therefore, about a magical world of wish fulfilment, but at the same time it also draws on the concrete reality of sixteenth-century England, which has relevance for a twentieth-century world still concerned with many of the same issues of crime, justice, religion, government, relationships and history. Discussion in this thesis focuses on the different "real" and ideal worlds and the devices used to represent these worlds in the narrative of The Faerie Queene. Chapter 1 deals with allegorical representation and distinguishes between two levels of representation: a "literal" or primary level of signification which reflects the everyday experiences of the sixteenth-century reader, and the allegorical level whereby these experiences and desires are personified. The allegory, in tum, communicates and reveals different doctrines or themes: this chapter shows how Redcrosse represents the struggle of the religious man who finally earns salvation by perseverance and dependence on the grace of God. In this allegorical world, Spenser shows the religious conflicts, doubts and victories of the sixteenth-century Protestant man. Chapter 2 explores a series of allegorical parallels in plot, theme and structure in Book 2 of The Faerie Queene which create the "real" and ideal worlds through which Guyon now runs his race. Here, the discussion focuses on the clues provided by the allegory which lead the reader to a redefinition of the categories of good and evil. The primary purpose of the allegory is, therefore, didactic and the sixteenth-century reader is taught how to interpret the signs and symbols of Spenser's allegorical, historical and mythical worlds. This chapter concludes with an examination of Spenser's mythical devices and an exploration of the historical significance of his fictional characters and plots - all of which help the reader to grasp the significance of Spenser's world of knights and fairies. Chapter 3 focuses on a discussion of Books 3 and 4, in which issues of love and friendship come to shape Spenser's ideal world. The analyses consider how sixteenth-century perceptions of marriage, love and power may have influenced his conceptionalization of such an ideal world. The chapter concludes with an exploration of sixteenth-century concerns with time and discord, and demonstrates how Spenser fmally resolves these issues in his vision of the Garden of Adonis. Chapter 4 deals with Book 5, where Artegall represents the just knight. Here the thesis examines Spenser's political aspirations, and shows how historical events are reflected in the actions of characters and how they may influence Spenser's vision of the ideal society with its just ruler. This discussion also focuses, among other things, on those factors which may have contributed to Spenser's disillusionment with sixteenth-century society. Chapter 5 concludes with Spenser's pastoral ideal of Book 6, which brings the promise of peace and prosperity, as opposed to a life of waste and thwarted ambition at Court. On Mount Acidale, Spenser's alternative worlds coincide, as Calidore, representing the fallen and "real" world of Faery Land, is allowed a glimpse of the poetic and divine worlds which the poet, Colin Clout, already shares with three Graces and his mistress. Chapter 5 examines the poet's autobiographical persona in the figure of Colin Clout and the relevance of his appearance on Mount Acidale in particular, and in the poem in general. It is the intention of this thesis to follow the route which Spenser has marked out, to read and interpret the signs and to finally share in this world of dream and thought, experience and vision.

The thesis demonstrates the extent to which the sixteenth-century allegorical epic poem, The Faerie Queene, engages with early modern theories of salvation. Much has been written about Spenser’s consideration of theological ideas in Book I and this has prompted scholars to speculate about the poet’s own doctrinal inclinations. However, little has been written about the ways in which the remaining books in the poem also explore Christian ideas of atonement, grace and damnation. This study advances Spenserian scholarship by stressing the soteriological dimension of books II, III, IV and VI. It considers how the poem’s doctrinal ambiguity would have meant that Spenser’s readers would have been able to interpret the poem in terms of the different schools of thought on the conditionality, or otherwise, of election and reprobation. As the thesis suggests, these particular books were alive to the doctrinal disagreements of the period, and explore the complex theological positions and divisions that existed at the time. By shedding light on the religious tenor of these remaining books, the study has implications for our sense of how the poem would have prompted sixteenth century readers to reflect on the means of their own salvation.

These rocks record a deformational history involving four phases of folding (D₁-D₄) and later brittle faulting (D₅). Earliest recognizable structures consist of recumbant isoclinal folds with a well-developed transposed foliation. This foliation is tightly folded about northwest trending, southwest verging second phase structures. Northwest trending third phase structures and northeast trending fourth phase structures occur as both crenulations and open buckles. Southeast dipping faults cut all earlier structures with tens of meters of normal offset Phase 1 and Phase 2 fold styles are compatible with a flattened buckle fold mechanism of formation, associated with elevated temperatures and reduced viscosity contrasts across layering. Later fold styles are controlled by higher viscosity contrasts and detachment along layering. All phases of deformation are dominated by semi-brittle mechanisms of dislocation slip and glide, mechanical twinning, and microcracking. Temperature activated diffusional creep is only locally active and does not contribute appreciably to total strain. The mineral assemblage garnet-staurolite-kyanite defines a metamorphic peak late in D₂. Metamorphic temperatures of approximately 530° C at 6.0 kb have been determined using garnet/biotite geothermometry. Extensive retrograde metamorphism spans D₃ and D₄, overprinting prograde assemblages and providing evidence for abundant fluids late in deformation. Late phase 1 diabase dykes locally intruded an area to the southeast of Ogden Peak. Major and trace element analyses of samples from these intrusions suggest a calc-alkaline, volcanic arc affinity.

" What sociology for which democracy? Political rationality and emancipation " has for ambition to question the links between the epistemology, the sociological theory and the posture or the kind of commitment of the sociologist in the city. It is a question of exploring the conditions of possibility of a critical, not ideological theory, but established in sociological reason. A first part, leaning on researches-actions, is interested in the question of the participation of the citizens. A first example, a sociology of the Theater of the oppressed, shows how this type of intervention can be interpreted as a device of political subjectivation. The second example raises the question of the participation from quite a different design of the social. On the occasion of the elaboration of a device of participation citizen on the territory of Feyzin, we tried to articulate a particular sociology (theory of the actor-network) and a design of the reason has a practice (with Vincent Descombes) to build a citizen Conference. In these two cases it is the links between sociological paradigm and modalities of democratic intervention that are examined. A more epistemological, second part, is interested in the functioning of the sociological discipline and presents three attempts of elaboration of a posture which aims at putting in its center the notion (and the practice) of « space of controversy ». The first example makes return on the German Quarrel of the social sciences because this quarrel is exemplary, at the same time of a controversy which tries to explore the various available arguments, at some point, but also, from a more substantial point of view, puts the foundations of two interpretations of the social world which are always active in the contemporary debates. The second is situated at a more theoretical level, and, from a colloquium which gathered various partisan authors of a theory of the activity to think of the work, of tent to bring to light a point of view of the activity which could be common to all these authors. The idea is rather simple : it is a question of contributing to build a cumulativity and a point all right the authors of which could claim to be (in particular in a political perspective). Finally, the third takes the risk of exploring what we sometimes call a point of view " postanthropocentric" (or " desanthropocentric ", the terms are far from being stabilized) in social sciences. If we take seriously the question of a deepening of the democracy, to where do we can go in this direction? What can mean for the sociology the idea to take into account the "non-human beings" ? It is so, by means of these multiple angles of attack, that this work suggests displaying our interrogation on the relations between epistemology, sociology and politics

The Eureka Peak are lies within the Quesnel terrane of the Intermontane Belt, adjacent to the Omineca Belt - Intermontane Belt tectonic boundary. It represents a convergent zone between the arc related Quesnel terrane and parautochthonous Barkerville terrane. The terrane boundary is defined by the Eureka thrust Underlying the area are middle Triassic to early Jurassic sedimentary and volcanic rocks, represented by the Quesnel River Group and Takla Group, respectively. Petrologic and geochemical studies of the Takla Group volcanics suggest protoliths of island arc and marginal basin affinities. The Quesnel terrane structurally overlies Hadrynian to early Paleozoic metasediments of the Snowshoe Group (Barkerville terrane). The base of the Quesnel terrane is marked by mylonitized mafic and ultramafic rocks of the Crooked Amphibolite. Correlation of features across the plate boundary has established the structural continuity in the region, and recognition of structural phases common to both terranes which developed in response to plate convergence. The deformational history involves two phases of coaxial folding of a mechanically heterogeneous lithologic sequence, accompanied by extensive pressure solution, and later overprinting by NW trending extensional fractures. Synchronous to F₁, detachment surfaces developed along major stratigraphic contacts due to contrasting Theologies of adjacent lithologies. Second phase deformation established the regional map pattern, folding the detachment surfaces and the tectonic boundary. Synchronous to deformation, regional metamorphism is evidenced by the growth of minerals characteristic of amphibolite fades in the Barkerville terrane, and greenschist fades in the Quesnel terrane. Dissipation of heat from the underlying sequences is suggested by the rapid transition in metamorphic grade observed across the boundary. Cleavage surfaces have acted as a locus along which pressure solution has occurred, providing a pathway for the escape of fluids generated during metamorphism. Deposition of material within extensional fractures occurred throughout the deformational history. Fracturing is prominent adjacent to the Quesnel River Group and Takla Group contact, where the viscosity contrast between the two lithologies provided an effective barrier to extensive fluid flow. Concentration of fluids along the contact may have had a buoying effect on the volcanics, allowing furter eastward translation during deformation.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the characteristics of the latin american payment crisis and the adjustment of both debtor countries and creditor banks to this crisis. The theory of imperfect information helps to understand the occurrence of the debt crisis. When banks have imperfect information on the actual causes of default, a situation where no bank wants to extend any new loans is likely to arise. The refinancing policy is then studied. It is underlined that the solvency of the banking system is no longer threatened by latin america. It is then shown that mexico, brazil and argentina have failed to make both the internal and external adjustments required by the payment of the debt service and that a "waste of potential economic growth" has probably occured. Finally, we studied the idea that a debt payment relief policy could be beneficial to debtors and the group of their creditors

Renaissance patriarchy maintained very clear distinctions between what was appropriately "masculine" and "feminine." Modern feminist criticism and research have tried to dispel some of the old illusions, and so they offer a fresh approach to evaluating the personal and social implications of gender in the Renaissance. Such perspectives can be specifically applied for enhanced appreciation of Spenser's Faerie Queene, after an initial assessment of Renaissance patriarchy itself.
The Faerie Queene, we find, questions many important conventions of gender roles in Renaissance patriarchal society. Spenser crosses the familiar boundaries of appropriate or accepted female social status and options, and situates both males and females in roles which seemingly challenge the existing conventions by advancing the possibility of a new perspective. Spenser examines femininity from a specifically feminine point of view and invites a broadened understanding of the feminine. He portrays many different aspects of femininity and his titular heroine, Britomart, approximates the modern androgyne. The poem suggests a variety of alternative gender roles for both females and males, and also uses symbolic aspects of gender, so that characters ultimately cease to be gender-specific in their significance. That too tends to soften distinctions between males and females, by allegorically representing the self in such a way that it is seen to have both masculine and feminine aspects.
Spenser's attempt to broaden his readers' understanding and valuation of the feminine and his suggestions of alternative roles for both genders, helped open the door to new freedom and equality for women by inviting redefinition or revision of culturally received notions of gender and its personal and social implications.

Streszczenie:
Beowulf presents a literary starting point in the discussion of peace weaving, reflecting the primary focus of Anglo Saxon epic poetry on the male hero rather than the peace weaver. Scholarship on peace weaving figures in the poem tend to negatively perceive the lack of female presence, and determine the tradition as one set up for failure. Adding historical peace weavers like Queen Emma to the discourse encourages scholars to view smaller successes, like temporary peace, as building on each other to ultimately cause the peace weaver to be successful at her task. From studying the life of Queen Emma, the continuous struggle of such a figure to be an influential presence in her nation is more evident. Combining the images of peace weaving set down by literature and then history prove that figures participating in the tradition are as vital to the heroic world as the warrior himself.

The CARIF-OREF Guadeloupe, association law 1901 charged to disseminate information on professional training, set up on behalf of the Regional council of Guadeloupe a Internet portal, intented to connect the various actors and applicants of professional training. The empirical study of the development relations, within the Portal, revealed that each on decides to use or not to use it, to adapt it or not to adapt it. On the basis of this experiment, this thesis try to analyse, why the actors and applicants of formation of the DFA adapt themselves or are not adapted tools Internet of information on the formation placed at their disposal. It reforms, also, on the role and the function : interests, asstes personal and professional, relational networks pre-made up in the appropriation or it "not-appropriation" of Communication and Information Technologies. The interrogation relates, here, to the "causes of appropriation of tools Internet of information". It is the reason of the interrogative heading of this memory : Which information for which professional training in the DFA (French Departments of America) ? Methodology approached consists in checking three assumptions in answer to such problem. The first consists in considering that the appropriation passes by a process of impregnation. That is say the appropriation comes from an early sensitizing to tools Internet in family circle. This early sensitizing favours the individual in his step of knowledge management. The second assumption poses the appropriation of tools Internet and the development of a knowledge management like the resultant of a widened culture. A culture gathering the various personal and professional cultures of the individual. The third assumption makes appropriation of tools Internet the result of an individual strategy installation by the individual. To check these starting assumptions, the context of the appropriation is initially delimited by a systemic approach of professional trainig in the DFA. Then quantitative data as well as qualitative are delivered

Streszczenie:
The southern extension of the Quesnel Lake Gneiss lies approximately 10 km northeast of the Intermontane-Omineca Belt tectonic contact in the southwestern Cariboo Mountains, British Columbia. The aim of this thesis is the investigation of the structural development and style at a deep structural level relative to the 1MB-OB contact, and to determine the nature origin of the southern extension of the Quesnel Lake Gneiss. Omineca Belt rocks in the Quesnel Lake region are the Late Proterozoic to Late Paleozoic Snowshoe Group metasediments. The Snowshoe Group rocks in this study area comprise a package of variably micaceous schist, quartz-biotite gneissose schist, calcareous metasandstone, marble and amphibolite which represent deformed and metamorphosed continental margin deposits. The Quesnel Lake Gneiss is a predominately subalkaline granodioritic intrusive into these sediments that has been modified by subsequent deformation and metamorphism. High Sr content, low initial ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr ratios and an alkalic component imply a mantle source although possible Pb inheritance in zircons and regional Sr data suggest a certain amount of assimilated continental crust A U-Pb zircon age on the Quesnel Lake Gneiss indicates intrusion in Mid-Paleozoic, probably Devonc—Mississippian time. A regional metamorphic event affecting the entire sedimentary and intrusive package is interpreted to have occurred in the Middle-Jurassic as suggested by sphene U-Pb geochronometry and regional stratigraphic relations. The structural sequence observed in this area is composed of five phases of folding followed by a brittle fracturing and faulting phase. The entire sequence of deformation is seen in both the Snowshoe Group and the Quesnel Lake Gneiss. A pervasive metamorphic foliation defines the compositional layering (S0/1) and is axial planar to isoclinal first phase folds in both rock packages. Syn-metamorphic second phase deformation is evidenced as tight similar-style folds with an axial surface penetratively developed at a low angle (10-15°) to the compositional layering. Syn- to post-metamorphic third phase deformation produced southwest verging folds with only locally penetrative axial surfaces developed at approximately 40° to SO/1 compositional layering and northwest plunging fold axes nearly coaxial with F2 folds. The Quesnel Lake Gneiss shows a lack of F3 macroscopic folds. Fourth and fifth phase folds are brittle, broad warps that are only locally developed in the more micaceous units. A series of ť vs. α plots on second and third phase folds in both rock types indicates a ductile regime associated with high shear strain during F2 deformation with decreasing shear strain and less ductile behavior during the third phase of deformation. This change in behavior corresponds with the waning of metamorphism. At least one regional metamorphic episode has affected this area in association with the deformational sequence outlined above. The metamorphic peak occurs post-F2 and pre- to syn-F3 deformation producing Barrovian-type assemblages of the amphibolite facies. Metamorphic temperatures of approximately 590° C at 5.5 kb were determined by garnet-biotite geothermometry in sillimanite-bearing schists northeast of the Quesnel Lake Gneiss. A tectonic history for the rocks in this map area began with the deposition of the Snowshoe Group sediments in a continent margin basin from the Late Proterozoic to the Early Mississippian. Intrusion into this package by the Quesnel Lake granitic body occurred between 317 and 400 Ma ago. The first phase of deformation recognized in the Snowshoe Group and Quesnel Lake Gneiss is absent in the Quesnellia and Slide Mountain rocks and may also be of Paleozoic age. The accretion of Quesnellia onto the continental margin in Early Jurassic time is inferred to have initiated the subsequent deformation and regional metamorphism.

Streszczenie:
In late Proterozoic to early Paleozoic time, continent-derived clastic sediment and minor carbonate of the Snowshoe Group were deposited in a continental slope to shelf environment, and shallow marine elastics and carbonates of the Cariboo Group were deposited nearer to the shore of North America. The Snowshoe Group is divided into a lower sequence of micaceous quartzite, pelite, and minor amphibolite, all interlayered with quartz diorite sheets; and an upper sequence of micaceous quartzite, pelite, and carbonate with minor calc-silicate and amphibolitic rocks. Early isoclinal (F1A) and NE-verging tight folds (F1B) formed together with a metamorphic foliation. Tight to normal, cylindroidal second phase (F2) folds, characterized by SW-vergence and NW plunge, formed during the mid-Jurassic Columbian orogeny at about the same time as accretion of suspect terranes southwest of the map area. Prograde metamorphism in the Barrovian series of amphibolite facies was synkinematic to postkinematic to F2 folding, with maximum metamorphic recrystallization outlasting deformation. Garnet-biotite geothermometry indicates temperatures of 525 ± 20°C for pelites near the kyanite to sillimanite zone isograd. Garnet-aluminosilicate-ilmenite geobarometry limits P to less than 7 kb. Grossular-anorthite-aluminosi1icate geobarometry gives P = 5.5 ± 0.7 kb. Retrograde metamorphism and F3 kink-folding occurred during uplift, followed by broad warping (F4) with NE trend. The low-angle, postmetamorphic Little River Fault emplaced chlorite to biotite zone phyllite and carbonate of the Cariboo Group, in the hanging wall, against staurolite-kyanite to sillimanite schists and gneisses of the Snowshoe Group, in the footwall, with latest movement of the hanging wall in an ESE direction. A Rb-Sr model depositional age of approximately 750 Ma, assuming an initial ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr ratio of 0.708, was obtained for Snowshoe Group metasedimentary rocks. Paleozoic plutonism is indicated by a Rb-Sr whole-rock isochron date of 530 ± 94 Ma with initial ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr ratio of 0.706, and U-Pb dates on zircon, indicating a minimum age of 335 Ma and maximum age of about 450 Ma, for quartz dioritic gneiss intrusive into the Snowshoe Group early in its deformational history, pre-F1B folding. Late- to post-metamorphic pegmatite cooled through 400-500°C at 86 ± 3 Ma. The age of the Little River Fault is bracketed between intrusion of pegmatite and a Miocene(?) erosion surface.

This study examines the sixteenth-century English Reformation background of Spenser's Faerie Queene, Book 3. Recovering this material is not simply a matter of opening a Bible, for various groups in the period, both Catholic and Reformer, interpreted its passages differently. The Book's four primary female characters, Belphoebe, Florimell, Britomart and Amoret, embody different aspects of the virtue, and these come into sharper focus in the light of this background. After a general survey of previous discussions of this topic, Chapter 1 examines the virgin Belphoebe and attitudes about celibacy and virginity current in sixteenth-century England, finding that neither Catholic nor Reformer disparaged this state, although in practice they differed dramatically. Chapter 2, considering the plight of Florimell, shows how her actions demonstrate that her chastity is, as these Reformation writers urge, a matter of the mind and soul, the springs from which virtue and its opposites flow. Her quality derives from such inner conviction. Next, Chapter 3, looking at Britomart, shows that Reformation writers generally do not speak of human love, even in marriage, in a way that comes close to Spenser's poem. However, when they deal with spiritual love, the love the soul is to have for God, they describe it in terms which sound very like those of passionate romantic love. The final chapter brings the insights of the preceding essay to bear on the closing cantos and Amoret's distress. Seen against this background, while she may appear helpless, her mind, like Florimell's, is constant and firm; she remains chaste. Indeed, she prefers imprisonment and even death, to surrendering to her captor. Like both Belphoebe and Britomart, what underlies her behaviour is her prior love for her beloved, which is the basis of her chastity, just as the Reformation writers understand it. The perspective on Spenser's poem provided by this Reformation material gives rise to new insights into the text

Streszczenie:
Contexte & Objectifs.
Aim and Background. Fire is an integral component of Mediterranean type ecosystems and other fire-prone systems worldwide but the perception of fire as an ecological disaster remains a widely-held view among human societies. Understanding whether and to what extent fire is beneficial or detrimental to biodiversity is a current research priority for conservation management in fire-prone systems. My research has attempted to quantify the multi-scale effects of fire on various facets of vegetation diversity, including landscape diversity, taxonomic diversity and functional diversity from a landscape ecology perspective. We used two contrasted Mediterranean study cases i.e., south-eastern France and south-western Australia in order to distinguish from their differences common ecological patterns.Methods. Fires and their effects on vegetation are normally studied as single and localized events. Here, we considered landscape-scale fire mosaics resulting from the compilation of fire events that occurred among time and space in a given landscape. The diversity of those fire mosaics has been quantified and permitted to define a new parameter i.e., pyrodiversity. This research proposes a conceptual and practical methodology for the objective characterization of pyrodiversity based on the comparison of two Mediterranean environments: south-west of Western Australia and southern France. Fire patterns were analyzed retrospectively over a 50-year period while vegetation, habitats and species diversity were quantified at the landscape scale using a monitoring protocol developed within the EBONE EU-project. Using the same geographical scale for fire and vegetation patterns permitted to cross the information on biodiversity and pyrodiversity. The relationship between pyrodiversity and biodiversity was examined at the community level (i.e., habitat) and landscape level (mosaic of habitats) with considering successively habitat diversity, taxonomic diversity and functional diversity.ResultsThis study provides evidence that high pyrodiversity (i.e., spatio-temporal diversity of fire patterns) is associated to various successional trajectories of vegetation and thereby maximizes the diversity of habitats at landscape scale. The results indicate that fire significantly contributes with environmental factors and land management to determine the composition of habitats across a landscape and spatial heterogeneity of landscape mosaics. Whether considering the effects of a single fire event on plant species or on plant functional traits, I found that plant diversity varies with fire frequency according to the intermediate disturbance hypothesis at the habitat level. At the landscape level, the pyrodiversity-biodiversity relationship verified the heterogeneous disturbance hypothesis i.e., maxima of alpha and beta diversity are associated to fire mosaics of high spatiotemporal heterogeneity. At the regional scale, pyrodiversity enhances habitat diversity (gamma diversity) within the landscape until a certain threshold. The two studies areas display contrasting profiles of pyrodiversity due to their different fire management strategies but also exhibit taxonomically unrelated floras. Hence, the two Mediterranean biomes were characterized by different ecosystem resilience and resistance to fire. Despite these differences, the two Mediterranean biomes show convergence trends in their ecological response to the gradient of pyrodiversity.Conclusion. This study tackled the Pyrodiversity-Biodiversity paradigm and demonstrated that Mediterranean-type ecosystems need pyrodiversity to maintain the variety of habitats and species at both habitat and landscape levels. Fire effects on vegetation cannot be interpreted directly from a local perspective with considering a single fire event

Streszczenie:
History in Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene Book V and his View of the Present State of Ireland reflects the basic assumptions and characteristics of Elizabethan territorial history, a form observed in the geographic basis of chorography, in the metaphoric expression of the British past, and in the contemporary English enthusiasm for state, county, and city histories. William Lambarde's A Perambulation of Kent, the earliest English model for Spenser's territorial history, employs the antiquary's tentative empirical methodology in a study of sources newly freed of myth, legend, and unreliable antiquity. Accepting the developmental historical perspective of the territorial historians, Spenser in his View discusses the susceptibility of certain positive laws to the ravages of time and circumstance and argues for a reformation of those laws and their administration in Ireland. Similarly, justice in book V is a virtue of reformation that requires a "physician" who diagnoses, cures, and prescribes a diet of new, well-ordered laws for the patient-state, the primary danger to "recural" existing in laws abrogated or perverted since their inception. While accepting the workings of divine and natural law in history, Spenser focuses on the justiciar's secular role in terms of political more than providential causation, legal more than moral justice, and practical more than theoretical law. As England's first justiciar Artegall presents a righteous response to original tyranny in a prelegal society and acquits himself on the charges of "unmanly guile" and "reproachful cruelty" by representing human justice based on laws responsive to season. In the historical domains of Book V Arthur's presence exemplifies providence in human justice, Artegall's actions man's secular control over responsive lawmaking and territorial rebellion, and Radigund's tale the imposition of natural law on justice. The legal and topical content of Book V's poetic journeys suggest the territorial historian's "perambulation" in which Spenser's heroes learn the history of each canto's territory before a reforming justice can operate. As feigned antique history merges with topical event, the Legend of Justice becomes an innovative, optimistic, and uniquely Elizabethan glimpse of new territory.

Streszczenie:
It has long been recognised that chastity is a problem in Book III of The Faerie Queene. The problem arises in part because the poem does not clearly define chastity but instead ambiguously praises it both as virginity and marital love. Behind the poem, too, lies the problem of Elizabeth with her Protestant virginity sometimes represented in Britomart, sometimes in Belphoebe, but also dangerously Catholic in its iconography. Indeed, wherever we turn in The Faerie Queene there are tangles of meaning. The contention of this thesis is that these problems are not merely surface writings, but stem from the Protestant breach with the Church Fathers and the long history of virginity. That history, I suggest in the main body of the thesis, has been broadly ignored by the critics who, by failing to grasp its theological complexity and development, have failed to produce an adequate platform from which to read the Protestant reformers and The Faerie Queene. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The Introduction examines recent critical discussions of virginity in Spenser, the Middle Ages and patristics, thus working backwards historically to the patristic writings themselves where I offer, in Part I, a detailed examination of the growth of the theological significance of virginity. Part II then looks at the reformers’ attacks on virginity, Luther and Erasmus especially, before turning to a discussion of the troubled meanings of virginity and chastity in Spenser’s epic poem.

Streszczenie:
Approaching the poem from the perspective of reception history, the present dissertation seeks to show that the Bible’s role in The Faerie Queene is far more pervasive than has usually been recognized. Rather than see the biblical material as the domain of only certain sections—notably, Book I and perhaps Books II and V—I propose that it is to be seen as a meaningful presence throughout the poem. Indeed, I will argue that it provides a previously unnoticed, unifying structure to the whole. I begin by giving a brief sketch of the Bible in Spenser’s early life. From here, I draw upon the resources of modern biblical scholarship—specifically, Childs’ “canonical approach”—to describe the way Spenser read the Bible and, consequently, the ways in which he alluded to it. I go on to discuss the notions of “typology” and “allegory,” providing the foundation for a discussion of Spenser’s reading not only of the Bible, but of the ongoing narrative of history. Then follows an exploration of the ways Spenser seeks to relate the various legacies of the Classical and biblical past to his Christian, humanist present, which culminates in a description of the Christian canon’s structuring role within the poem. This leads to a reflection on this structure’s significance through consideration of the various instances of books and of reading that occur in Book I. I then take up this theme again in Book III, in the transformation of Malbecco and in the idolatrous Tabernacle-Temple of Busirane. Drawing upon the early modern discourse concerning images and idols, I conclude with a discussion of The Faerie Queene as a unified, poetic sign pointing to the Divine Presence—a function typified in the discarded ending of Book III.
