This article discusses the connection between a particular class of growth processes and random matrices. It first provides an overview of growth model, focusing on the TASEP (totally asymmetric simple exclusion process) with parallel updating, before explaining how random matrices appear. It then describes multi-matrix models and line ensembles, noting that for curved initial data the spatial statistics for large time t is identical to the family of largest eigenvalues in a Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE multi-matrix model. It also considers the link between the line ensemble and Brownian mot

Theoretical physics is a cornerstone of modern physics and provides a foundation for all modern quantitative science. It aims to describe all natural phenomena using mathematical theories and models and, in consequence, develops our understanding of the fundamental nature of the universe. This book offers an overview of major areas covering the recent developments in modern theoretical physics. Each chapter introduces a new key topic, and develops the discussion in a self-contained manner. At the same time, the selected topics have common themes running throughout the book, which connect the i

This chapter presents some theoretical tools for defining random graph ensembles systematically via soft or hard topological constraints including working through some properties of the Erdös-Rényi random graph ensemble, which is the simplest non-trivial random graph ensemble where links appear between two nodes with a fixed probability p. The chapter sets out the central representation of graph generation as the result of a discrete-time Markovian stochastic process. This unites the two flavours of graph generation approaches – because they can be viewed as simply moving forwards or backwards

This paper examines the relationship between monetary policy and wealth inequality in South Africa. We employed a unique database of tax administrative data which allowed us to account for individual heterogeneity. These tax data span from 2011 to 2017 and include over 3 million individual taxpayers in South Africa after data cleaning. Results based on fixed- and random-effects panel model estimates show that monetary policy generally increases wealth Gini inequality while it decreases the wealth 90–10 percentile differential. As the world battles with the triple problems of social, economic, and environmental challenges, it has become important to focus both policy and research efforts on these. Therefore, this study examines the effect of wealth inequality on CO2 emissions in five emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The top decile of wealth share was used as a measure of wealth inequality, while CO2 emissions per capita were used as a measure of CO2 emissions. It then considers the statistical properties of scattering observables at a given fixed value of the scattering energy, taking into account the maximum entropy approach as well as quantum transport and the Selberg integral. This article addresses multilevel models in which units are nested within one another. The focus is primarily two-level models. It also describes cross-unit heterogeneity. Moreover, it assesses the fixed and random effects from the multilevel model. It generally tries to convey the scope of multilevel models but in a very compact way. Multilevel models provide great promise for exploiting information in hierarchical data structures. There are a range of alternatives for such data and it bears repeating that sometimes, simpler-to-apply correctives are best.

Color from motion describes the perception of subjective color that spreads over physically achromatic regions that are seen in apparent motion. Multiple frames are shown in quick succession, each frame composed of a random placement of differently colored dots on an achromatic background. Subjective color can be measured by color matches to and cancellation by real lights, can be seen with chromaticity differences alone in test and surround dots, and is independent of con

Energy is the capacity to do work and heat is the spontaneous flow of energy from one body or system to another through the random movement of atoms or molecules. The entropy of a system determines how much of its internal energy is unavailable for work under isothermal conditions, and the Gibbs energy is the energy available for work under isothermal conditions and constant pressure. The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that for any reaction to proceed spontaneously the total entropy (system plus surroundings) must increase, which is why metabolic processes release heat. Sampling theory concerns itself with development of procedures for random selection of a subset of units, a sample, from a larger finite population, and with how to best use sample data to make scientifically and statistically sound inferences about the population as a whole. The inferences fall into two broad categories: (a) estimation of simple descriptive population parameters, such as means, totals, or proportions, for variables of interest, and (b) estimati

Abstract This book concerns particle dynamics, where the term “particle” covers a wide range of shapes and sizes, from atoms to asteroids. While this book considers particles with fixed sizes, the main focus is on particles that grow and shrink over time, due to random or chaotic processes or events, such as inelastic or partially elastic collisions. Prior books on this subject typically focus on just one or a few applications in aerosol science, astrophysics, polymer science, and so forth. In this specialized literature, particle growth is referred to by terms such as aggregation, agglomerati
