The contribution of oxidative stress to the pathogenesis of several health conditions and its association with life-threatening diseases such as malaria has necessitated the search for more phytochemicals with antioxidant properties. Various parts of Raphia hookeri such as the leaves, fruit and sap have been moderately studied and applied in different areas of industry. However, the epicarp is generally discarded. The ethanolic extracts of Raphia hookeri leaf and epicarp were herein investigated for their total phenolic and flavonoid contents using spectrometric methods. 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl

AbstractThe biology of the aphid, Cerataphis variabilis H.R.L., on Raphia hookeri Mann &amp; Wendl., was studied in the laboratory and the field using a ‘clip-on’ cage and a sleeve cage. The first instar lasted 5.1 days. The second and third instars each lasted 2.45 days, while the fourth instar lasted 2.4 days. The total developmental period of the nymphs was 11.3 days at 26.4 ± 1.43°C and r.h. 83 ± 1.46%; 11.6 days at 26.4 ± 1.63°C and r.h. 85 ± 1.19%; 12.9 days at 27.9 ± 1.04°C and r.h. 75.5 ± 1.64%; 12.95 days at 27.8 ± 0.33°C and r.h. 69 ± 1.23%; 15 days at 21.4 ± 0.58°C and r.h. 45 ± 1.7

Raffia (Raphia hookeri Mann &amp; Wendl.) heart, a little-known vegetable, is usually eaten after cooking in some regions of the Cote dIvoire. The proximate composition of the fresh state and the effect of cooking time (15, 30 and 45 min) on biochemical parameters were investigated. The results show that fresh raffia heart contains nutrients such as proteins (14.53 ± 0.03 g/100g), lipids (2.60 ± 0.10 g/100g), total sugars (35.61 ± 0.13 g/100g) and phytochemicals, in particular total polyphenols (5.86 ± 0.38 g/100g), flavonoids (0.75 ± 0.20 g/100g) and tannins (1.93 ± 0.9 g/100g). Agroforestry is promoted as a practice at the crossroads of sustainability and productivity objectives; however, many agroforestry programmes have had mixed effects due to a lack of understanding of the compatibility of the species supplied to farmers with cocoa and a failure to take account of their knowledge in designing the programmes. This paper, therefore, examines the effects of socio-economic and agroforestry factors on cocoa yields in Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa. The data used come from surveys of 150 farmers in three areas of the country: Bonon, Soubré and Biankouma. The choice of thes

<em>This study presents a comparative analysis between traditional gins produced from oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) and raffia palm (Raphia hookeri) sap. Physicochemical quantification revealed the raffia palm gin exhibited significantly lower moisture content (27.0%) yet higher total titratable acidity (0.134 g) compared to the oil palm gin (29.7% moisture; 0.014 g acidity). Mineral profiling indicated both gins were below established regulatory limits for toxic metals including lead (0.083 and 0.042 mg/kg) and cadmium (0.038 and 0.028 mg/kg) in oil palm and raffia palm gin respectively.
