The ability to realistically model gene evolution improved dramatically with the rejection of the assumption that rates are constant across sites. Rate heterogeneity models allow for better estimates of parameters and site specific inferences such as the detection of positive selection. Recently developed models of codon evolution allow for both synonymous and nonsynonymous rates to vary independently according to discretized gamma distributions. I applied this model to mitochondrial genomes and concluded that synonymous rate variation is present in many genes, and is of appreciable magnitude

This thesis presents the first systematic study of the cobalt site preferences in iron rare-earth based compounds. The Mossbauer source technique employed in this work offers a direct and unambiguous way to quantitatively determine cobalt site preferences in these compounds at extremely low cobalt contents. Data quality as well as counting efficiency for the source ($ sp{57}$Co doped) samples is enhanced by constructing a resonant conversion electron detector utilising 90% $ sp{57}$Fe enriched stainless steel foil. Our results have produced the most convincing evidence that cobalt substitutes

La zone du rift est-africain est l’hôte bien connu de nombreuses carbonatites et complexes alcalins associés, mis en place de façon récurrente depuis plusieurs centaines de millions d’années. Les grands gisements d’ETR exploités aujourd’hui dans le monde sont associés à des complexes carbonatitiques. Dans ces complexes, les minéralisations font rarement partie de l’assemblage minéralogique primaire ; elles précipitent à partir des fluides évolués à partir des intrusions magmatiques.

Site-selective laser spectroscopy, Zeeman infrared and optical absorption have been employed to investigate trivalent dysprosium centers in rare-earth doped alkaline-earth fluoride crystals. These studies have characterised the two dominant centers in SrF₂:Dy³⁺ which are determined to be the fluorine compensated C₄ᵥ and C₃ᵥ centers analogous to those observed in other SrF₂:RE³⁺ systems. I use a multi-method approach looking at secondary source data on player positions and contemporary stacking, media analysis, fan narratives and sport blogs in the two contexts of Philadelphia and Los Angeles. O objetivo principal deste trabalho foi identificar e separar os níveis de energia dos multipletos excitado, 4S3/2, e fundamental, 4I15/2, provenientes do íon Er3+ alojado nos vários sítios não equivalentes existentes no garnet Ca3Ga2Ge3O12. Várias técnicas de espectroscopia óptica (absorção, luminescência com bombeio seletivo, excitação e conversão ascendente de luz) foram usadas com este objetivo.
