Prothymosin-Î± (PTMA) is a small, highly acidic protein, first studied in the rat thymus as an immunogenic factor (Haritos et al., 1984a), and soon detected in a wide variety of mammalian tissues, including heart, brain, kidney and gonads (Haritos et al., 1984b; Clinton et al., 1989).
