The question of writing Creole is a question that concerns many Reunionese. How were the different Creole scripts emerged on the island? What are their history and evolution in this Reunionese society whose Creole language seems to be becoming more French daily? Since the writing of Reunionese Creole is neither normalized nor standardized, several graphic solutions are available to anyone who wants to use Reunionese Creole to write in society. In the absence of unity and for lack of information, many Reunionese write either spontaneously or by following the spellings recommended since 1977. Th

Jean Rhys’s stories ‘Temps Perdi’ (1967), ‘I Spy the Stranger’ (1966), ‘A Solid House,’ (1963), and ‘The Insect World’ (1973) do not figure in current scholarship on Second World War fiction. Versions of the first three were offered for publication in 1946. Rhys began writing ‘The Insect World’ in the mid-1940s. Rhys’s perspective in the fiction is that of an expatriate white Creole from Dominica, an island with formative Indigenous and French and British imperial histories. Focusing on ‘The Insect World’, ‘I Spy a Stranger’, and ‘Temps Perdi’, I analyse Rhys’s representations of temporalities

Abstract Does Hortense Have a Hoo-Hoo? Gender, Consensus, and the Translation of Gisèle Pineau's L'espérance-macadam — This article uses an experiment in translating Guadeloupean writer Gisèle Pineau's novel L'espérance-macadam via consensus as a point of departure for analyzing the broader context of translating the French Caribbean for an English-speaking public. Previous efforts at translating recent French Caribbean fiction have focused on the challenge of representing the linguistic spectrum specific to the franco- and creolophone Caribbean. Here, it is suggested that Pineau's particular

How does patriotism shape societies? What might it look like if patriotism were aligned with care rather than violence? In this article, I analyze Dutch-Swiss author Isabelle de Charrière’s novel Trois femmes (1797) through the lens of care ethics, particularly Sarah Clark Miller’s notion of a “duty to care.” Charrière’s novel examines the limits of Enlightenment theories of moralism (especially Kantian morality and duty) by putting theory into practice with a group of three women: a former French aristocrat, a wealthy mixed-race Creole woman, and an Alsatian servant. The three women live toge

At the beginning of his Creole opus The Grandissimes, George Washington Cable refers to Louisiana as “A land hung in mourning, darkened by gigantic cypresses, submerged; a land of reptiles, silence, shadow, decay”. This anti-pastoral view of Louisiana as an ecosystem of horrific nature and the very human melancholy it breeds is one that has persisted in popular American culture to the present day. However, the literature of Louisiana itself is marked by its creativity in blending elements of folktales, fairy tales, and local color. This paper proposes to examine the transhuman, or the transcen

Abstract The second chapter explores the hauntology of Haiti by focusing on how early American fiction represented the United States as hermeneutically, temporally, and ontologically disjointed by the arrival of French, Creole, and enslaved refugees. Using Martha Meredith Read’s 1802 novel Monima; or The Beggar Girl as a point of departure, the chapter maps how Federalist writers accentuated the ghostly indecipherability of foreign connections which they feared were unsettling the domestic realm. In depicting an American social scene bereft of networks of sympathetic support, Read draws linkag
