Population densities, using distance sampling, and habitat associations of the range-restricted Rock Firefinch Lagonosticta sanguinodorsalis were investigated between late May and early July 2002 in a protected site at Amurum on the Jos Plateau, Nigeria, and in unprotected surrounding habitats. Rock Firefinches were strongly associated with inselbergs and rocky outcrops and avoided scrub and abandoned farmland. Density was not significantly higher on the Amurum protected site (0.79 birds/ha; 95% CL 0.51–1.21) than on the unprotected areas (0.55 birds/ha; 95% CL 0.37–0.82). Rock Firefinches wer

Studies of niche overlap within communities of lizards have shown that separation may be along the three major dimensions of space, time and food. Space is usually the most important dimension where a range of habitats are involved; there is less information on the importance of microhabitat separation within a single habitat type. This study investigated microhabitat relationships of small diurnal lizard species occupying granitic rock habitat in Zimbabwe. There was statistically significant niche separation among all species in both the type of rock occupied (size, shape, number of cracks, c

ABSTRACT: Coupled geomechanical approaches are imperative for optimizing field development planning. This paper concerns a subsidence study for Torosa field, Western Australia with a focus on the turtle nesting habitat at Sandy Islet—a sand accumulation located on the reef above the gas reservoirs. This involved building a 3D geomechanical model incorporating structural complexity and rock heterogeneity, followed by adopting a one-way coupling scheme to assess outcomes of three proposed development plans. For the scenario named "REF Case", the maximum predicted subsidence at the end of depleti

Abstract Diagenetic nodular anhydrite observed in fluvio-aeolian-lacustrine and glacial sandstones has significant implications to reservoir quality. This type of nodular cement is spatially and volumetrically variable within these reservoirs. Its presence impacts subsurface formation evaluation and porosity calculations. Thus, the investigation of these nodules was carried out using: core image analysis; thin sections petrography; micro computed tomography (MicroCT) scans; bulk rock X-Ray Diffraction (XRD); sulfur & strontium isotope analyses. Where core was unavailable, geochemical data

The study of Nam Dong Natural Reserve in Thanh Hoa province utilized remote sensing and GIS to assess potential turtle distribution across its 646.95 ha area, comprising lowland subtropical, lowland tropical, and rocky mountain forests. The reserve, rich in biodiversity, hosts species listed on both the Vietnam and IUCN Red Lists. Vegetation was classified into five types, with medium forest covering 74.34%, and elevation into five bands, with 50.02% in the 250-500m range. The study identified 31 turtles from four species, predominantly found in medium forest (65.52%) and the 82-250m elevation

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) maintains breakwaters in Milwaukee Harbor. USACE’s Engineering With Nature® (EWN®) breakwater demonstration project created rocky aquatic habitat with cobbles (10–20 cm) covering boulders (6–8 metric tons) along a 152 m section. A prolific population of Hemimysis anomala, an introduced Pontocaspian mysid and important food source for local pelagic fishes, was significantly (p < .05) more abundant on cobbles versus boulders. Diamond mining via open pit mining has been ongoing within the Tlicho region of the Northwest Territories for several decades, which includes the habitat range of the Bathurst Caribou Herd. This has led to the importance of quantitative characterization of the Zone Of Influence (ZOI), where resource development activities may be influencing the natural behaviour of the caribou herd in the tundra environment. As part of better defining and understanding the ZOI in this region, an initiative to evaluate the potential of detecting and mapping mine waste rock dust in the surrounding environment is

Camera trapping is increasingly used to collect information on wildlife occurrence and behaviour remotely. This provides insights into habitat use by species of interest and gathers information on non-target species. We implemented ground-based camera trapping to investigate behaviours of ground-dwelling birds and to monitor activities of Agassiz’s desert tortoises at their self-constructed burrows in a wind-energy facility near Palm Springs, California. While doing so, we collected data on numerous burrow commensals, including birds. Monitoring from late spring to midautumn showed regular use

Fifteen years ago, Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) implemented an Elk and Vegetation Management Plan (EVMP) in response to increasing negative impacts of winter elk herbivory on key plant communities. The EVMP is intended to guide the management of elk and vegetation over a 20-year period, reduce the impacts of elk on vegetation, and bring target ecosystems into the natural range of variability for elk and vegetation in aspen, montane riparian willow, and upland herbaceous habitats. Monitoring plots were established at the outset and vegetation data is collected, analyzed, and results are
