The monospecific hexactinellid sponge genus Symplectella endemic to New Zealand waters was originally assigned to family Rossellidae within the order Lyssacinosida (subclass Hexasterophora), although affinities to family Euplectellidae were also noted. Seventy-eight years later, the genus was transferred to Euplectellidae (subfamily Corbitellinae) on rather subjective grounds. Here, I test these two competing taxonomic hypotheses with molecular phylogenetic methods and demonstrate that Symplectella rowi is indeed a rossellid, as was originally suggested. The genus is officially transferred bac

ABSTRACTThe Pentland Hills sponge fauna (Llandovery, Telychian) consists of an unusual, aberrant assemblage, but of low diversity. A new specimen of a unique sponge, Eoghanospongia carlinslowpensis gen. et sp. nov., is described from the classic locality of R82. The mushroom-shaped, probably stalked body (peduncle attachment to body not exposed) resembles that of some living rossellids, especially Caulophacus. The sponge also shows prominent projecting pentactins and monaxon derivatives – a spicule type diagnostic of the Rossellidae among living taxa, albeit in a robust form not described from

A new species, belonging to the rossellid subfamily Lanuginellinae Gray, 1872, is described based on two specimens collected from two different seamounts in the western Pacific Ocean. Species characterization was approached by analyzing the morphological and skeletal features as well as the complete mitochondrial genome. Caulophacus (Caulodiscus) iocasicus sp. nov. is distinguishable from its congeners by its branched external shape and a unique combination of microscleres. It only has hemionychohexasters while other C. (Caulodiscus) species additionally have either onychohexasters or discohex

AbstractAmong living hexactinellids (glass sponges), the Rossellidae are one of the most distinctive species‐rich families because of their unique macroscopic characters and, due to the resulting fossil record, are among the most useful for tracing the origins of hexactinellid diversification. Recent discoveries have extended the origin of the total group back to the Ordovician, but these fossils have, so far, all been identified either as stem‐group representatives or as sponges with uncertain interpretation. New material described here from the Hirnantian (latest Ordovician) Anji Biota of Zh

Plumes of re-suspended sediment potentially smother and clog the aquiferous system of filter-feeding sponges with unknown implications for their health. For the first time, we examined the physiological responses of repeated exposure to natural sediment in the glass sponge Vazella pourtalesii, which forms dense sponge grounds in Emerald Basin off Nova Scotia, Canada. Ex situ chamber-based measurements of bacterial clearance and oxygen consumption (respiration) rates indicated that individuals subjected to elevated concentrations of suspended sediment expressed normal clearance and respiration

There has been increasing interest in mining polymetallic sulfide deposits at deep-sea inactive hydrothermal vents, leading to the development of regulations to minimize risk to the marine environment. While an extensive body of literature exists on the ecological communities at active vents, fauna at inactive hydrothermal vents and the vent periphery are poorly described and their vulnerability to disturbance is unknown. We examined patterns in abundance of non-vent epibenthic megafauna on two segments of the Juan de Fuca Ridge, Northeast Pacific Ocean. Video footage was collected by the remo
