Sabulina basaltica and Sabulina sororia (Caryophyllaceae) are described as new species endemic to Washington State, U.S.A. Sabulina basaltica is restricted to high-elevation, basalt rocks in the northeastern Olympic Mountains, and Sabulina sororia to high-elevation, dunite rocks of the Twin Sisters Range in the North Cascade Mountains. Both were previously confused with Sabulina rossii (formerly called Arenaria rossii or Minuartia rossii). Their recognition as distinct species is supported by morphological and molecular characters and disjunct geographic distributions. Both are illustrated, ma

Olonetsky Nature Reserve (Zakaznik), located in Southern Karelia, was established in 1986 in an area of 27000 hectares. Surveys have detected 447 species of vascular plants, including 372 (83,2 %) native and 75 (16,8 %) alien ones. The shore dunes and sandy beaches of Lake Ladoga, as well as black alder swamps in depressions between ancient levees harbored the most distinctive flora. Festuca sabulosa, Hypopitys monotropa, Jovibarba globifera, Oenanthe aquatica, and Viola stagnina are red-listed in Karelia; seven more species are in need of monitoring. The spread of the aggressive invasive spec

This paper is a review of all Polygalaceae material on which the treatments of the family by Saint-Hilaire and Moquin-Tandon in 1828 and Saint-Hilaire in 1829 were based. It includes type designation for the names of all new taxa there proposed, except for Polygala paludosa var. ambigua. Some of the Saint-Hilaire and Moquin-Tandon’s names which were omitted in several Neotropical Polygalaceous treatments are here reviewed. Therefore, one of them, Polygala sellowiana, is here re-established as the correct name for the species better known as P. sabulosa. More detailed information is provided fo

Laboratory experiments were conducted to study aggregative responses of larvae of Simulium vittatum Zetterstedt on a ceramic tile to activity of a predatory perlid stonefly, Claassenia sabulosa (Banks). Nearest-neighbor analysis indicated that larvae became aggregated regardless of whether a predator was present. There was no significant difference in either number of larvae remaining on the tile or degree of black fly aggregation between trials that lacked a predator and those in which a stonefly could travel over the tile. Direct contact between predator and prey caused single simuliid larva
