In search for an efficient means of building up the carbon stock, improving the fertility levels and aggregate stability of tropical soils for optimum crop yield, a field study was carried using different biochars and comparing the effects with inorganic fertilizer. The biochars were palm bunch biochar (PBB), saw dust biochar (SDM) and rice mill husk biochar (RMHB). Soil chemical properties degradation is a very serious challenge facing food production in the tropics. To ensure sustainability, there is need for soil improvement. This study aimed at investigating the temporal dynamics of soil chemical properties during incubation with biochar from diverse biomass sources. An incubation experiment was carried out at the Soil Science Laboratory Faculty of Agriculture, Imo State University. The soil used was for the experiment was taken at the depth from 0 - 20 cm from Imo State Teaching and Research farm Owerri. The collected soil was air-dried, crushed, and

In recent years, increasingly more soils are getting contaminated with organic and inorganic toxins globally due to waste emissions. Among inorganic pollutants, heavy metal like chromium (Cr) is alarming to our environment, even though its environmental management is also ignored. As a result, Cr accumulates in plant tissues at toxic concentrations end up in the food chain. Therefore, pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of biochar and modified biochar application on the properties of Cr polluted soils and interaction of Cr with other soil nutrients. Sorption capacity of two different biochar (saw dust and rice straw) was evaluated in the recovery of chromium from wastewater. The optimum pH was 5-7 for recovery of Cr(III). Optimum yield was received after 1 hour contacting time with an adsorbent dose of 1 g/L and initial concentration was ∼20 mg/L. Cr(III) ions were transported to biochar surface through adsorption and intra-particle diffusion process. Langmuir and Freundlich kinetic parameters indicated that the affinity of the sorbent towards the uptake of Cr(III) ions and adsorptions were favorable. According to FTIR analysis of Cr(III)

This study was conducted to assess the effects of amending tropical sandy soils with biochar derived from agro-industrial wastes on the leaching and utilization of nitrogen (N) by maize. The experiment was conducted in pots in a greenhouse with two sandy soil types and two different biochars. The biochars used in this experiment were preselected in a preliminary column experiment that assessed the N retention capacities of the different biochars and those that exhibited the best retention capacities chosen for experimentation. The biochars evaluated included saw dust, rice husk and corncob pyr

Biochar is a stable carbon-rich material whose potentials can be greatly enhanced by modification with simple treatments. Easily available two different biochars such as rice stubble biochar (RSB) and saw dust biochar (SDB) were slowly pyrolyzed (450±50°C) and modified with KOH as RSB-M and SDB-M respectively. Represented biochars were analyzed to know their physicochemical characteristics and nutrient contents. Results revealed that nutrient contents such as total N, P and S of RSB and SDB were found maximum whereas RSB-M and SDB-M showed the lowest nutrient contents. All the biochars possess

The agricultural application of biocarbons (biochar) derived from different biomass sources in the process of pyrolysis is a promising solution for crop productivity and quality, soil health improvement, and carbon sequestration. In a three-year study, the effects of low doses of biochar (1 t∙ha−1 and 3 t∙ha−1) of different origins on winter wheat grain quantity and quality were tested. Six different biochar types were used: biochar derived from wheat husk (WHB), (2) extracted medical plant biomass biochar (MPB), (3) wood chip biochar (WCB), (4) wood sawdust biochar (SB), (5) biochar made from

Declining soil fertility and the limited use of sustainable soil organic amendments has resulted in reduced crop productivity in Nepal. This study assessed biochar produced from rice husk and sawdust at three different pyrolysis temperatures (200°C, 400°C, and 600°C), characterized their properties and applied them as soil amendments to test their agronomic effect on kidney bean production. The highest biochar yields were achieved at lower pyrolysis temperatures (200°C) for both rice husk (40%) and sawdust (38.4%). Ash content was significantly higher in rice husk (33.6%) compared to sawdust b
