Streszczenie:
Both the nature of human problems and the process of behavioral change are increasingly being viewed from a cognitive-structural perspective. The concept of a cognitive schema seems to be the major theoretical construct used by researchers studying how cognitive structures influence human behavior. Schemas are fundamental cognitive structures, derived from past experience. Schemas operate by selectively organizing the on-going experience of each person into subjectively meaningful patterns. Through the operation of schemas, people are active constructors of their own psychological realities. This article presents an overview of the philosophical, historical, and theoretical foundations of schema theory. The relevance of schema theory for psychotherapy is presented through a discussion of schema oriented cognitive-behavioral theorists. A specific application of a schema framework in psychotherapy is illustrated by research on depressive self-schemas. It is hoped this article will serve as a stimulus to the continued application of schema oriented cognitive-structural approaches to research and practice in psychotherapy.

This paper examines the use of schema theory in enhancing English reading comprehension in senior high school students. Schema theory, a cognitive psychology framework, emphasizes that readers’ prior knowledge and experiences play a crucial role in comprehending new information. This paper summarizes the basic viewpoints of schema theory and discusses its practical applications in English reading comprehension in senior high school. Research has shown that implementing schema theory not only benefits students’ language skills but also fosters their critical thinking abilities. When students are able to connect new information with their existing schemas, they become more familiar with analyzing and interpreting complex texts. This theory encourages active engagement with the material and promotes a deeper level of comprehension. This paper also addresses challenges and solutions in implementing schema theory. By incorporating schema theory into reading classes, teachers can help students develop a deeper understanding of texts, improve their reading efficiency, and enhance their overall English proficiency.

Streszczenie:
Personality disorders (PDs) have a long history of understanding the causes and consequences of PDs. The Schema Theory explained a series of psychological processes that led to the genesis of PDs, rather than the antecedents-consequences dichotomy. Bad childhood events, according to Young's Schema Theory, contribute to the formation of childhood negative cognitive schemas, some of which (schemas) survive into adulthood and transform into PDs. The same theoretically proposed strategy was tested in this investigation. Mediating role of schema modes between emotional maltreatment and PDs in adults was investigated. The study was conducted with 1000 adults by using cross-sectional survey design. Mediation analysis explained that schema modes mediated between emotional maltreatments and PDs of adults. Thus, the Schema Theory gained support from the empirical data. Schema modes mediated for all personality clusters including cluster-A, B and C. In line with these empirical insights, the maladaptive personality traits also mediated between emotional maltreatments and PDs of adults

This paper aims to investigate and discuss the concept of schema within various theoretical frameworks, highlighting its essential importance for comprehending mathematical contexts. The article discusses Bartlett, recognized as the pioneer in introducing the concepts of "schema" and "schemata" in his research on memory in the field of cognitive psychology. Additionally, it emphasizes Skemp's important contributions to the comprehension of schema. Furthermore, the psychological dimension of schema is clarified by Piaget's theory and plays a crucial role in Vergnaud's theory of conceptual fields. During the process of instrumental genesis, individuals, such as students in a classroom setting, actively develop what Rabardel describes as "utilization scheme" or "usage scheme" related to a tool. Rabardel posits that the application of tools encompasses both personal and social aspects. Consequently, social schemes emerge through interpersonal interactions and are shaped by the utilization of tools and artifacts within a given context. From this perspective, schemas contain social components. The incorporation of blended teaching methods, along with digital technologies and artificial intelligence, has significantly transformed the practices utilized in academic and educational organizations and institutions. Consequently, learners and teachers develop "instrumental" schemata, which suggests that these schemata are not static but rather dynamic, evolving continuously within a digital/instrumental/AI context. This transformation has also influenced the structure of various activities included in student textbooks.

Streszczenie:
This article discusses the traditional image schema theory, which is J. Lakoff and M. Johnson’s conceptual. Although it was introduced several decades ago, certain clarifications and refinements must be made to its framework and key terms in response to the latest advance in cognitive science. In particular, questions have been raised about certain properties of an image schema, such as bringing together different types of perception, relying primarily on human motor experience, abstractness, and being able to morph into other image schemas. For a better understanding of these properties, the concept “circle” in the Russian linguistic worldview was analyzed, and the following properties of the image schema were singled out by the methods of analysis (component, definitional, contextual, logical-linguistic, and etymological), modeling, and cognitive interpretation: spatiality (the presence of a spatial image), visualization, generalization of the experience to a logical scheme, high ability to form meaning due to the cognitive and semantic types of variation, and combinatorial activity (the ability to combine with various image schemas as parts of a larger image or to become the center of association for other image schemas in a different situation). Of special interest are the means of representation characteristic of an image schema: unlike in concepts of other types, its verbalization is performed with the help of not only lexical and phraseological means but also word-building morphemes with spatial semantics (prefixes). A macro-image schema can consist of many micro-image schemas bounded together under the principle of “family resemblance”, wherein any image schema can be central, i.e., play the role of a unifying one. The results obtained here on the refinement of the traditional image schema theory should promote further development of linguocognitive research.

ABSTRACTBackground:Schematherapy (ST) is an effective therapy for personality disorders (PD's) in adults, however, empirical research into ST in older adults is limited. The manifestation of schemas over the life course is unclear. Besides, long-term patterns of schemas in old age and whether schemas change during the aging process remain unknown. Methods:We performed a Delphi study involving a group meeting of nine experts in the field of ST in older adults. Results:Full consensus was achieved that schemas vary later in life, and that this is due to biopsychosocial factors. The concepts of schema triggering (the chance that a maladaptive schema is activated) and schema coping (the psychological and behavioral effort a person makes to minimize the stress that comes with the schema) in the past are important in clinical practice. Understanding how schemas are triggered during the life course and how patients deal with their schemas throughout life will help the therapist to complete the diagnostic puzzle in older individuals and to choose appropriate interventions. Conclusion:Schemas are flexible and dynamic constructs that can fade or intensify due to multiple factors. This study is a first step toward advancing the state of knowledge regarding schema theory in an aging population. The results will contribute to improvements in ST in older adults by developing an understanding of the plasticity of schemas during the life course.

Most emotional concepts people use in their everyday lives are metaphorically structuredand understood. Therefore, the study of emotional metaphors becomes significant for anadequate understanding of emotional reality. The present study is intended to analyzemetaphors of emotion in Kurdish from the perspective of image schema theory in cognitivelinguistics. The study aims to examine the role of image schemas in constructing andunderstanding metaphors of emotion in central Kurdish and their meanings. The studyseeks to answer some questions, such as: Is the theory of image schema applicable tothe metaphors of emotion in central Kurdish? How are emotions of happiness, sadness, anger and love conceptualized in Kurdish from the perspective of Image Schema theory? What are the major types of image schema that are commonly found in central Kurdishemotional metaphors? To answer the above questions, a qualitative analysis of data hasbeen adopted as a method of data analysis. Depending on the analysis of the data, thestudy comes up with the idea that the theory of image schema is applicable to the metaphorsof emotions in central Kurdish and that the most common image schemas in thecentral Kurdish data, in descending order, are the FORCE, LINK, CONTAINER, PATH,and PART- WHOLE schema.

Streszczenie:
This thesis studied a new variant of Evolutionary Algorithms called Gene Expression Programming. The evolution process of Gene Expression Programming was investigated from the practice to the theory. As a practice level, the original version of Gene Expression Programming was applied to a classification problem and an enhanced version of the algorithm was consequently developed. This allowed the development of a general understanding of each component of the genotype and phenotype separated representation system of the solution employed by the algorithm. Based on such an understanding, a version of the schema theory was developed for Gene Expression Programming. The genetic modifications provided by each genetic operator employed by this algorithm were analysed and a set of theorems predicting the propagation of the schema from one generation to another was developed. Also a set of experiments were performed to test the validity of the developed schema theory obtaining good agreement between the experimental results and the theoretical predictions.

Political schema research (Kinder, Peters, Abelson, & Fiske, 1980; Miller, Wattenberg, & Malanchuk, 1986) has centered on the schemas voters use to select presidents. Unfortunately, political researchers have all but neglected the state and local level. Consequently, this thesis focuses on the schemas voters use to select governors to determine if these schemas differ from schemas used to select presidents. This thesis also tests the relationship between political sophistication and the use of certain schemas to select a governor. Surveys were administered to 563 adults waiting for jury duty. Results indicate the schemas voters use to select governors differ from those used to select presidents. Political sophistication is positively related to usage of issues and performance schemas. Further research should explore political schemas at state and local levels.

Streszczenie:
Schema therapy was developed by Jeffery Young to treat adults with personality disorders, and has been evidenced to be effective in treating both Axis I and Axis II disorders. While Young stipulates that schemas are likely to be in place by adolescence, there is currently little agreement over the appropriateness of schema theory and therapy in understanding and treating psychopathology in adolescence. This thesis aims to explore the evidence–base and potential utility of applying schema theory to adolescent psychopathology, and consists of a systematic review and research article. The review included published studies measuring Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS) in 12 to 18 year olds, including those exploring relationships between EMS and psychopathology. The search of relevant literature from 1990 to 2012 yielded 19 articles for review, which were then subject to assessment of methodological quality. Most studies were assessed as ‘moderate’ in quality. Good quality evidence was found for the detection of higher rates of EMS in clinical or referred adolescent populations compared to non–clinical populations, as well as some evidence for effects of age and gender on EMS. Less consistent evidence was found for specific associations between individual EMS or domains and particular types of psychopathology or problem behaviour. Common limitations of the articles reviewed included poor control of confounding variables and little testing of EMS alongside contextual constructs to provide validation of findings. The main research article used a quantitative, questionnaire–based cross– sectional design to test the dimensionality of the schema concept in a population of 12 to 18 year–olds, comparing levels of EMS between a referred and non–referred group. EMS were measured alongside attachment and interpersonal behaviours to test their unique predictive effect on psychopathology. Specific relationships between individual groups of EMS and type of psychopathology were also explored. Results showed that the referred group scored significantly higher than the non–referred group on overall schema score. Schemas were found to significantly predict level of psychopathology, over and above prediction by attachment or interpersonal behaviour scores. There was also evidence for the specific prediction of internalising and externalising problem behaviour, affective, anxiety, oppositional–defiant and conduct problems by clusters of EMS. In conclusion, EMS appear to be a valid concept in predicting and understanding psychopathology in adolescence. A conceptual model is suggested for future research to explore the adaptation of schema theory more fully within developmental psychopathology. It is hoped that future research will test other aspects of schema theory in adolescents such as coping styles and modes. It is proposed that, following further validating evidence, this may result in the development of improved interventions for a range of presenting problems in adolescence.

Streszczenie:
The aim of this research is to investigate the possible effects of text experiences on story retelling with young children. The subjects are 210 Lebanese children, whose native language is Arabic, learning to read in English through using foreign culture books, mainly American. It is the belief that, while learning to read in a second language, children are also introduced to a new culture. Therefore, a key question is how are we going to make this process easier and more enjoyable to children who are a) learning to read, b) in a foreign language, and c) about a distant culture. Based on previous work with schema theory, two story books are used in this study to detect any differences in comprehension levels between stories of varied cultural backgrounds. One story is based on the Spanish concept of bull-fighting which is assumed to be foreign to the children and the other is with a familiar Lebanese background. Subjects were divided into four groups: the first group worked with pictures and had a discussion prior to reading to build the target-culture schema; the second had the schema activities after reading the story; the third discussed the cultural topic both before and after reading; and the last was a control group which did not have schema activities. Results show that familiarity with a topic before reading the text promotes comprehension, retention, and retelling of a text. Proficiency in the foreign language seems to have a great effect on text understanding when information about the topic is made available. Implications are drawn and suggestions given for practical approaches to developing children's reading through tasks in Lebanese classrooms.

Streszczenie:
Researchers acknowledge the difficulty faced by children in understanding new concepts. Explaining new concepts to children requires supporting their reasoning based on concrete objects and ideas. Human tutors normally use some dialogue to introduce new concepts and tailor the explanations to the prior knowledge of the children. There is a lack of interactive pedagogical agents that guide children's reasoning and adapt explanation to their cognitive state. The design of such agents can be based on learning theories that explain how children understand new concepts, as well as on studies of how human teachers support children's conceptual understanding. The goal of this research is to develop a computational framework to inform the design of a pedagogical agent capable of engaging in a dialogue that supports children's conceptual understanding, the thesis proposes an approach for Schema Activation and Interpersonal Communications (SAIC) to support cognitive tasks that occur when a child is learning new concepts through one-to-one interaction with a computer agent. The approach is based on schema theory that explains how meaning-making occurs and stresses the importance of prior knowledge, and on the results of an experimental study that identifies strategies human teachers use to support schema-based cognitive tasks. A novel architecture of a pedagogical agent whose behaviour is based on schema activation and modification is described. The architecture addresses three important issues: describing the process of activation and modification of relevant prior knowledge to be used in introducing new concepts; defining the reasoning and decision making of the agent to promote schema-based cognitive tasks; and providing adaptive explanations tailored to the child's relevant prior knowledge. The schematic knowledge of the SAIC agent is represented as frames, the dialogue is planned as a sequence of dialogue games, and the interaction language is implemented with linguistic templates extracted from a study with teachers. The applicability of the SAIC approach is demonstrated in a multimedia educational system 'Going to the Moon', as an integrated as an integrated component in a reading session. An experimental study with the multimedia system has validated the SAIC design approach and has examined the usefulness of the agent in supporting children's conceptual understanding in terms of improving their schematic knowledge. The thesis makes original contributions to the fields of Artificial Intelligence in Education by defining reasoning and decision making based on the principles of schema theory, and by designing a schema-based pedagogical agent to support children's conceptual understanding; Education by demonstrating the application of learning theories to inform the design of intelligent tutoring systems; and Knowledge-based systems by demonstrating the feasibility of frames as the representation formalism in Intelligent Tutoring Systems, and by proposing some original mechanism for using frames to design pedagogical agents.

Streszczenie:
Entity Relationship (ER) diagrams are among the most popular formalisms for the support of database design [7, 12, 17, 6]. Their classical use in the (usually computer aided) database design process can roughly be described as follows: after evaluating the requirements of the application, the database designer constructs an ER schema, which represents the conceptual model of the new database. CASE tools can be used to automatically transform the ER schema into a relational database schema, which is then manually fine-tuned. During the last years, the initially rather simple ER formalisms has been extended by various means of expressivity to account for new, more complex application areas such as schema integration for data warehouses [12, 3, 13]. Designing a conceptual model with such enriched ER diagrams is a nontrivial task: there exist complex interactions between the various means of expressivity, which quite often result in unnoticed inconsistencies in the ER schemas and in implicit ramifications of the modeling that have not been intended by the designer. To address this problem, Description Logics (DLs) have been proposed and succesfully used as a tool for reasoning about ER diagrams and thereby detecting the aforementioned anomalies [5, 6, 8].

Met Office, September 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.62998/wnnr5415.

Streszczenie:
Large fires that produce plumes of smoke and other contaminants can cause harm to both people and the environment. To support UK emergency responders, the Met Office Environmental Monitoring and Response Centre (EMARC) provides dedicated weather advice and forecasts of the plume in the form of CHEmical METeorological (CHEMET) reports. The plume’s expected location, extent and relative air concentrations of pollutants are predicted using the Numerical Atmospheric-dispersion Modelling Environment (NAME), which simulates the transport and dispersion of pollutants using numerical weather prediction data. During major fires, air quality monitoring equipment is deployed to confirm the presence of elevated concentrations of contaminants. We use ground-level air concentration measurements from multiple events to evaluate the operational set-up of NAME. We investigate both the output averaging depth used to calculate air concentrations and the use of three optional NAME schemes that are designed to improve the representation of short-range dispersal dynamics: the near-source scheme, the plume-rise scheme, and the urban scheme. We find that using the current operational output averaging depth of 100 m produces model air concentrations that compare best to point observations at the surface, and that using the near-source and urban schemes further improves the fit. However, using these more computationally expensive schemes has little impact on the modelled location and extent of the plume, suggesting they may offer no advantage over using the current operational set-up to produce CHEMETs. Using the plume-rise scheme strongly influences the predicted plume location, extent and surface concentrations. Further work is needed to understand whether its application is appropriate for simulating plumes from fires. We conclude that the current operational set-up can be maintained while the significance of the impact the optional schemes have on CHEMET plume dispersal forecasts is considered further.

Lewis, Erin, Victoria Cohen, Charlotte Evans, and Iulia Gherman. Salmonella risk profile of UK-produced hen shell eggs. Food Standards Agency, July 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.rpp424.

Streszczenie:
A previous risk assessment (Opens in a new window) from the Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food (ACMSF) in 2016 concluded that due to the significant reduction in the risk from Salmonella in UK-produced hen shell eggs produced under a recognised farm assurance scheme (Lion Code or equivalent), the risk to consumers from eggs produced under these schemes was ‘very low’. This risk assessment led the FSA and FSS to update their consumer advice on the consumption of eggs in 2017, stating that vulnerable groups could consume raw or runny eggs produced within an assurance scheme. This risk profile will examine the current situation of Salmonella in UK-produced table eggs, and the factors that may influence the current risk of Salmonella in UK-produced eggs and highlight any that have changed since the risk assessment provided by the ACMSF in 2016.

Edeh, Henry C. The Effect of the Liberian Government’s Taxation Policies on Poverty and Inequality. Institute of Development Studies, October 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ictd.2024.102.

Streszczenie:
Many low- and middle-income countries engage in tax policy reforms. This is usually motivated by efforts to increase tax revenue collection, and also sometimes to improve equity by reducing the burden of taxation on relatively poorer taxpayers. However, little is known about the extent to which these tax policy reforms affect poverty and inequality, especially at the household level. This study exhaustively analyses the progressivity and effect of taxation policies on poverty and inequality in Liberia, a low-income country, for the first time. After accounting for the informal sector, personal income tax (PIT) was found to be progressive in the pre-2011 tax scheme. However, it is more progressive in the post-2011 tax scheme. The pre-2011 PIT reduced inequality, but increased poverty. The post-2011 PIT also reduced inequality, but there was no incremental change on poverty. A simulated scheme, with a 75 per cent reduction in tax rates for lower taxable income bands, and 75 per cent increase in tax rates for higher taxable income bands, was found to be even more progressive. The simulation also confirmed the reduction in inequality and zero increase in poverty found in the current scenario. Goods and services tax (GST) was found to be progressive in both the pre-2016 and post-2016 GST schemes – implying that the rich pay more GST through their higher purchase of non-food taxable items. GST marginally reduced inequality but increased poverty in the pre-2016 scheme. The post-2016 GST scheme marginally increased inequality and substantially increased poverty. A simulated scheme, with a lower effective GST rate on taxable expenditure below a predefined threshold, and a higher rate on taxable expenditure above the threshold, was found to be more progressive. In addition, the simulation led to a greater reduction in inequality and limited increase in poverty. We suggest that increasing the current rate of PIT by 75 per cent for top income earners, and setting differentiated GST rates (5 per cent of effective GST on lower taxable expenditure and 95 per cent on higher taxable expenditure) will help to boost the equity of, and redistribution from, the Liberian tax system.

Research, Community. Food Hygiene Rating Scheme Online Display in Wales: Executive summary. Food Standards Agency, June 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.mzi656.

Streszczenie:
Online is increasingly one of the main channels through which consumers interact with food businesses – and research and purchase journeys will often involve multiple channels (online, face-to-face, telephone). It can feel inconsistent that businesses are required to display FHRS ratings on their premises but not online. Indeed, Consumers could see no reason for a distinction between the information available at the physical premises to those online particularly given the increasing role of online food purchase. Consumers are already quite confident navigating the online landscape when it comes to researching and selecting restaurants and takeaways. They are accustomed to making the most of the information available online to make decisions around food. and are not necessarily demanding additional help. A range of criteria (including reviews; word of mouth) is used to help inform choices and decisions around food and hygiene in particular – but this information is vague, haphazard and unreliable. There is a lack of reliable, credible information about food hygiene in the online space. As many regard the FHRS as independent and credible there is some feeling that it would give online sites a “legitimacy” reviews and recommendations do not. Consumers make quick, off-the-cuff decisions when it comes to selecting and researching food. While they are familiar with and will make (at a glance) use of FHRS ratings on businesses’ physical premises, they are not actively seeking these out online where accessing ratings is currently a more involved process requiring navigation to another website. Consumers strongly support mandated FHRS online display and believe it would both help them make better decisions about food and encourage greater compliance by FBOs. FHRS ratings on FBO websites (and other online resources, like food aggregators) would be a useful addition to consumers’ repertoire of information. Consumers also feel FHRS online would have a positive impact on FBOs from a consumer perspective by making them more compliant. Consumers feel it is important that the ratings displayed online are trustworthy, as well as quick and easy to access. Consumers feel that FHRS ratings should be displayed as prominently online as they are on premises i.e. on the landing page. There is also a call for safeguards to be put in place to ensure FBOs can’t display ‘fake’ ratings.

This study examines the use of incentive mechanisms for employees in export and investment promotion agencies intended to improve their performance. It briefly describes these organizations and presents the contributions from economic theory that are useful to understand the agency problems that arise. It proposes a framework to study the issues that need to be considered to design a sound incentive mechanism. The study concludes that such a design should be carried out carefully, analyzing all of the possible drawbacks of rewarding each measure of employee performance, and identifies the main issues that need to be resolved.

Saha, Amrita. The Welfare Effects of Trade Preferences Removal: Evidence for UK–India Trade. Institute of Development Studies, February 2025. https://doi.org/10.19088/ids.2025.006.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This paper examines the welfare effects of the unilateral trade preferences scheme of the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) for United Kingdom (UK)–India trade on households in India. The design of unilateral trade preference schemes has been linked to significant uncertainty about preferential market access. And the removal of trade preferences requires adjustments raising trade costs with corresponding effects for workers in sectors reliant on exports in beneficiary countries. I investigate India’s sectoral graduations from the European Union (EU) GSP in 2014 and 2017 that were applicable to the UK until 2020. I also predict the welfare effects of the UK’s Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS) as a hypothetical scenario. These scenarios are of importance as they reflect the combined effect of higher tariffs and uncertainty attached with unilateral preference schemes that could be addressed by a move to a free trade agreement (FTA). Also, there is limited empirical evidence on how unexpected changes in unilateral preferences such as the GSP may specifically affect employment and wage dynamics. Given that the UK aims to balance trade preferences with social equity, the lack of evidence should be of particular importance to the UK. I compute a trade exposure measure and estimate its differential welfare effects using an ordinary least squares (OLS) and quantile regression approach with UK–India trade data and granular high-frequency household-level data for India from 2014–19. I find considerable differences in the effects of trade exposure at the district level with the UK on household welfare in India. The negative welfare effect of trade exposure to graduated sectors appears on wage incomes, especially for lower-income households in urban areas. The overall results show GSP removals affecting the poorest, while the benefits concentrating at higher-income levels. The DCTS predictions suggest arguably these sectoral graduations are designed in a more targeted way as the negative effects are across all income levels, and the benefits also span across income distributions.

Gertler, Paul, Sebastián Galiani, and Rosangela Bando. Non-contributory pensions. Inter-American Development Bank, June 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0011635.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The creation of non-contributory pension schemes is becoming increasingly common as countries struggle to reduce poverty. Drawing on data from Mexico's Adultos Mayores Program (Older Adults Program) --a cash transfer scheme aimed at rural adults over 70 years of age-- we evaluate the effects of this program on the well-being of the beneficiary population. Exploiting a quasi-experimental design whereby the program relies on exogenous geographical and age cutoffs to identify its target group, we find that the mental health of elderly adults in the program is significantly improved, as their score on the Geriatric Depression Scale decreases by 12%. We also find that the proportion of treated individuals doing paid work is reduced by 20%, with most of these people switching from their former activities to work in family businesses; treated households show higher levels of consumption expenditures (on average, an increase of 23%). Very importantly, we also rule out significant anticipation effects that might have been associated with the program transfers. Thus, overall, we find that non-contributory pension schemes target to the poor in developing countries can improve the well-being of poor older adults without having any indirect impact (through potential anticipation effects) on the earnings or savings of future program participants.
