Novel methodology is described for the estimation of food intake in the particularly difficult circumstance where groups of people eat directly from a shared bowl of cooked food. Detailed observation and measurement of meal preparation is combined with food table values for composition to calculate the nutrient content of each meal. The ability of the algorithm to identify seasonal changes in energy intakes is demonstrated by comparison of the calculated energy intakes with values for the total energy expenditur

Animals were given unrestricted access to prey for 8 h·day–1 on either consecutive days or on alternate days only. Habitat and food resource partitioning are predicted to facilitate the coexistence of similar-sized carnivores. The golden jackal (Canis aureus) and silver-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas) are similar-sized canids that respectively inhabit grassland and woodland in the Serengeti ecosystem, Tanzania. As information on the diet and food-intake of these two species in this ecosystem is limited, we aimed to compare the diet and food-intake of these canids in the wet and dry seasons, using data from focal samples of foraging behaviour and scat analysis. We predicted dietary differences between these

Of the 117 foods, 105 (89%) showed differences between summer and winter consumption. In pen trials, actual metabolizable energy (ME) intake was lower (P < 0.01) during winter (528 ± 51 kJ W−0.75 d−1) than in summer (917 ± 69 kJ W−0.75 d−1). Similarly, in field trials, estimat

Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) is a commonly used tool for the measurement of food intake of a large population. However, FFQ could be influenced by the cultures, seasons and food habits. Thus FFQ should be validated against a known or standard tool like a multiple 24-hour dietary recalls (24h) and also needs to be tested for its reproducibility. Hence, in this study, the reproducibility of a Raw food based quantitative FFQ (RFFQ) was assessed and validated against the standard multiple 24h method. We measured body weight and lifestyle factors in 31 participants from May 2017 to January 2018. Weight was measured daily in participants’ homes. Physical activity and sleep were measured for three weeks in three seasons using two accelerometers. Food intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Matschie’s tree kangaroo (Dendrolagus matschiei) is an endangered arboreal marsupial native to Papua New Guinea. Detailed field studies of its behavior and ecology are scarce due largely to its occupation of remote cloud forests and cryptic nature. Although this species has been in human care since the 1950s, much of its biology is still unknown. The current ex situ population is not sustainable due to health and reproductive problems, believed to stem largely from issues with diet and obesity.
