Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to review and compare information obtained for four female serial murder perpetrators, exploring possible personality features that make the female serial killer unique. As this is the first project to explore the personalities of female serial murderers through data collected from the offenders themselves, it is primarily an exploratory study. Design/methodology/approach – The data presented were collected as part of a larger project, which solicited participation from incarcerated, suspected serial murderers. Upon agreeing to participate, each potential participant's background was searched to ensure they met the definition of a serial murderer. The participants were sent a survey packet containing measures related to demographics, psychopathology, psychopathy, and personality features. These packets were sent to participants at their respective prisons, with a return envelope provided. Upon return, surveys were scored and analyzed to create a comprehensive profile of each offender. Findings – The subjects of this study each presented a unique personality profile as measured by the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 and Millon Clinical Multiaxial Invetory-III. Three of the four participants did not appear to by psychopathic, which is not surprising given the low incidence of psychopathy in women. Originality/value – This study, while limited by the small sample size, provides the first data set of valid psychological measures collected through first-hand accounts with female serial murderers. Although the data presented did not display a single comprehensive profile indicative of a female serial murderer, it does provide a foundation for further research.

Purpose Rapid sequence homicide offenders (RSHOs), formerly spree killers, are an understudied population due to the confusion surrounding their classification in relation to serial murderers. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach An exploratory, comparative analysis of 56 RSHOs and 60 serial murderers was conducted on US-based data from 2014 to 2018 derived from the Consolidated Serial Homicide Offender Database to determine similarities and differences between the cohorts. Findings RSHOs and serial murderers are similar in that they often kill their victims using a singular method, have limited mobility, kill a similar number of victims both known and unknown to them and are both supremely motivated by domestic anger. There is an inverse relationship between serial murderers and RSHOs: as one group increases in prevalence the other decreases. Practical implications In order to divert men into more pro-social activities, attention must be dedicated to increasing mental health services that provide them with the tools to diffuse their hatred and couple that with effective gun control strategies and ways to enhance the compromised anger management skills of a generation of volatile men. Originality/value Academicians have been hesitant to juxtapose these offenders but based this conclusion on surface-level differences. A reimagining of these categorical structures is needed. The once clear delineation between these cohorts may continue to shrink and synchronize until one subsumes the other.

This article seeks to develop criminological theory with the application of a literary device known as the ‘flâneur’ – an individual described as a ‘stroller’ – to serial murderer Levi Bellfield. With this application of the ‘flâneur’ to the phenomenon of serial murder, this article provides a fresh theoretical ‘lens’, and specifically sheds light on how particular serial murderers operate and evade detection in modern society. The importance of modernity to the phenomenon of serial murder is also considered utilizing Ultra-Realist theory, resulting in both a micro and macro examination into how the modern urban landscape has subsequently created an environment in which the serial killer both operates and comes to fruition. This synthesis between the application of literary devices, criminological theory and socio-cultural concepts not only raises important and previously neglected questions pertaining to serial murder, but also assists in forming the more sinister relative of the flâneur: the ‘dark flâneur’.

The study of serial murder is a very important part of criminal psychology, and in order to help the development of the current society, we need to fully understand the psychological process of serial killers to prevent more tragedies from happening. yet there is a lot of literature that studies the psychology of murderers, but it is not explicitly comprehensive enough to analyze serial killings because of the killers’ personalities, family education and genetics. In order to overcome the shortcomings of the current literature, our group studied 14 articles and used the literature analysis method to summarize and analyze. This paper deeply studies the three reasons that lead to the occurrence of serial killers. Through the research, it is found that the three reasons can lead people to become murderers. For this reason, we separately explain why the three reasons can lead murderers to have bad thoughts and finally rely on the pleasure of killing. At the same time, this paper makes people better understand psychopathy, paving the way for more in-depth research in the future and paying attention to the psychology of people around.

This article contributes to criminological research on cultural constructions of serial murderers by investigating the little-known Canadian case of Peter Woodcock. There is a tacit scholarly consensus that news media routinely sensationalize modern serial killers as celebrity monsters. The case of Woodcock aligns with a different theoretical trajectory geared toward explaining the relative obscurity of otherwise “made for primetime” serial murder events. Examining coverage in the local and national press, the article builds on the sparse literature concerned with absences in conventional explanations for how news media participate in the cultural construction of serial murderers. It does so by gleaning insights into the ways in which Woodcock was simultaneously framed as a sadistic sex maniac responsible for killing three young children in the 1950s and a victim of social circumstance owing to his troubled upbringing. Although Woodcock killed before the rise of the serial killer claims-making industry in the 1980s, the article concludes by reflecting on the curious absence of a retroactively reconstructed modern melodramatic storyline in light of the surreal characteristics of the investigation leading up to his arrest and the circumstances that enabled him to gruesomely kill again in 1991.

Historically, serial homicide has been defined in various ways by experts. Recently, there have been renewed efforts to arrive at a consensus definition, yet these efforts have not yet been resolved. At the heart of the controversy appears to be the prioritization of either qualitative definitional features, such as offenders’ intentions and motives, or more observable quantitative features, specifically a minimum threshold of completed murders. The present technical note briefly summarizes this controversy before considering new empirical and theoretical research developments. These developments support a definition that includes a three-victim minimum threshold of forensically linked murderers by the same person(s), occurring in separate events over time, wherein a primary motive is often personal gratification (leisure experience).

Empirical research on serial murder is limited due to the lack of consensus on a definition, the continued use of primarily descriptive statistics, and linkage to popular culture depictions. These limitations also inhibit our understanding of these offenders and affect credibility in the field of research. Therefore, this comprehensive overview of a sample of 508 cases (738 total offenders, including partnered groups of two or more offenders) provides analyses of solo male, solo female, and partnered serial killers to elucidate statistical differences and similarities in offending and adjudication patterns among the three groups. This analysis of serial homicide offenders not only supports previous research on offending patterns present in the serial homicide literature but also reveals that empirically based analyses can enhance our understanding beyond traditional case studies and descriptive statistics. Further research based on these empirical analyses can aid in the development of more accurate classifications and definitions of serial murderers.

The article is a comparative study of two stories about murderers, characters of the novels “African Psycho” (2003) by Alain Mabanckou and “American Psycho” (1991) by Bret Easton Ellis. The similarities in the construction of the main characters – fascination with popular culture, brutality and vulgarity, identity problems and interest in famous serial killers – are evidence of Mabanckou’s intertextual play with a popular American novel. The essence of this play, however, is rather the moments of distinguishing and negotiating with the original text, among them: cultural, social, economic and political differences in the construction of the world presented, different class positions and motivations for the actions of the murderers. The article investigates also the main characters’ capability to be subjects of moral judgements. Their specific mental state (biographical discontinuity, isolation, desire for evil) is evidence of „depowerment”. Therefore, their capacity for self-understanding and ethical responsibility is questioned.

Objective: The aim of this paper is to explore the phenomenon of clinicide. Conclusions: The study of medical killers is barely in its infancy. Clinicide is the unnatural death of multiple patients in the course of treatment by a doctor. Serial medical killing is a relatively new phenomenon. The role model is Dr Marcel Petiot, the worst serial killer in French history. More recently, Dr Harold Shipman was Britain's worst serial killer and in the United States and Zimbabwe, Dr Michael Swango killed 60 patients. A number of doctors have such high patient death rates that it cannot be ignored. At some level, these doctors have an awareness of what they are doing, countered by an overweening refusal to acknowledge the implications or desist from further treatment. Treatment killer offences usually occur on the basis of serial mental illness, but may include the contentious area of euthanasia killing. Doctors have frequently been accomplices in state repression, brutality and genocide in direct contravention to their sanctioned role to relieve suffering and save life. They have become mass murderers on an exponential scale, making any comparison with a doctor killing his own patients almost risible. Many clinicidal doctors have extreme narcissistic personalities, a grandiose view of their own capability and inability to accept that they could be criticized or need assistance from other doctors. Such doctors develop a God-complex, getting a vicarious thrill out of ending suffering and by determining when a person dies.

In the first part of our study (Serial Killers on the Other Side of the Bars: “Bestial Humans—Human Beasts”) we focused on the crimes committed by serial murderers, identified alternatives of classification and analysed their behavior within the prison walls. In the upcoming part, we will investigate international and domestic experiences related to the use of life without parole; review the way of life of those who have been sentenced to “life until death”; examine the punishment’s mechanics and impact and finally conduct an analysis of the present form of the notion “not allowing them to live, not letting them die”. The basis for this inquiry is the fact that currently, 67% of the serial killers serve a sentence of life without parole. [In Hungary, the practice of sentencing convicts to life without parole is regulated by the Criminal Code. In its principle, this form of punishment means that those who receive this sentence will never be released on parole (42. §). Article 46/A‒B of the Prison Code; however, it also introduces a mandatory clemency procedure for those who are serving a life sentence without parole. There is a rumour in Alberta that the new definition of “a promising playwright” is someone who can weave a plot involving nude bisexuals, lesbians, gays, serial murderers, sadomasochists, adulterers, prostitutes, and yuppies without seeming gratuitously sensational. Even when successful, such a formula is certain to alienate every corporate sponsor in the oilpatch, for they are attentive to the offence taken by subscription audience members who (presumably) use petrochemicals to maintain their blue rinses. The rumour arises from Brad Fraser’s triumph with Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love, recently featured in Alberta Theatre Projects’ playRites ‘89 festival. This was the only one of four mainstage productions that did not attract a business sponsor and the only one to play to full houses. If ATP is wise it will heed this sign and offer more challenges to its customary audience by expanding on the mandate evident in the regular subscription season.

El estudio de los delitos contra la vida humana va ganando espacio dentro de las ciencias del comportamiento y despierta interés de decisores gubernamentales, organismos multilaterales y la sociedad. Los distintos tipos y características de estos crímenes son investigados desde cuatro enfoques: biológico, psicológico, sociológico y ecológico. El objetivo de esta investigación es determinar las características diferenciadoras entre los perfiles criminológicos de los asesinos. Para ello, se emplea una metodología cualitativa, descriptiva y aplicada, a través de la revisión de la literatura y el análisis de estudios de casos. Se encuentra que, más allá de edad, sexo y raza, es difícil establecer resultados conclusivos en los estudios criminológicos. El principal criterio diferenciador del asesino en serie es el tiempo de enfriamiento emocional. Además, existe mucha semejanza entre los asesinos múltiple en un solo acto y los terroristas; la principal diferencia radica en las motivaciones ideológicas y políticas. Abstract The study of crimes against human life is gaining space within the behavioral sciences and awakens the interest of government decision-makers, multilateral organizations and society. The different types and characteristics of these crimes are being investigated from biological, psychological, sociological and ecological approaches. The aim of this research is to determine the differentiating characteristics between the criminological profiles of the murderers. A qualitative, descriptive and applied methodology is used, through the review of literature and case studies. It is found that, beyond age, sex, and race, it is difficult to establish conclusive results in criminological studies. The main differentiating criterion of the serial killer is the emotional cooling time. Also, there is an outstanding similarity between mass murderers and terrorists; the main difference lies in ideological and political motivations.

individual’s set of psychological traits, or their psychopathology,impacts how they experience the world around them, and language offers resourcesthat allow for that experience to be shared with and communicated to someoneelse. That language can then be analyzed for patterns and their connectionsto the psychological traits. In a forensic context, such connections may givevaluable insights. There already exist psychological and linguistic approachesto the analysis of forensic texts, but the psychological approach largely lacksgrounding in linguistic theory and the linguistic approach does not typically allowconsideration of psychological characteristics. What this paper aims to provideis a step toward bridging that gap. In this paper we examine the system ofattitude from the Appraisal framework developed by Martin and White (2005) andadapted by Gales (2010) and Hurt (2020) applying this to the writings of four serialmurderers with documented mental health diagnoses. Significant patterns in theattitudinal resources were identified quantitatively and examined qualitativelythrough the lens of the psychological traits that comprised the authors’ diagnosesto determine if there was a relationship between them. Despite the obviouslimitation presented by the sample size, the results of this study suggest theapproach presented in this paper warrants further investigation.

The present work embraces multiple aspects related to the theme of serial murder, which is essentially addressed by a criminological and personological perspective. Attention will be focused first on the serial killer figure, which will analyze both the intrapsychic peculiarities and the most intrinsic motivations behind the homicidal action as well as the more technical and specific aspects of the modus operandi and the signature that convey this kind of offenders. At the same time, a victimological overview will be developed, focusing on the preferential victims in this delinquent mode. The article will also highlight a categorization of serial killings based on the motive, as well as different classifications of the major types of serial killers identified by multiple authors. Finally, criminal profiling will be analyzed, deepening the role of the profiler in investigations and outlining the presumed personality of the offender, thus circumscribing the field of potential investigators with particular reference to US reality. ---------- Il lavoro qui presentato abbraccia molteplici aspetti relativi al tema dell’omicidio seriale, che viene essenzialmente affrontato da una prospettiva criminologica e personologica. L’attenzione, infatti, si concentrerà inizialmente sulla figura del serial killer, di cui saranno analizzate sia le peculiarità intrapsichiche sia le motivazioni più intrinseche alla base dell’azione omicidiaria, nonché gli aspetti più tecnici e specifici quali il modus operandi e la firma, che connotano questo tipo di autori di reato. An interview with Ewa GąsowskaIn the interview, Ewa Gąsowska described her ten-year-long struggle with the Polish legal system. Gąsowska’s objective has been to reinstate the good name of her grandfather, Jan Rybak, who was murdered in 1945. According to Gąsowska, the reason for her grandfather’s death was his political activity in PPR (Polish Labourers’ Party) and his post-war commitment to the reconstruction of People’s Poland (Polska Rzeczpospolita Ludowa). Gąsowska claims that he was murdered by members of Narodowe Siły Zbrojne (National Armed Forces).Almost 60 years after the death of Jan Rybak, a book was published which presents his activity and death in a different light. The book had been written by one of those regarded by Rybak’s family as his murderers. This “courtroom drama” is situated in the context of the relations between the Rybak family and the local community (the place where Jan Rybak, and most likely also his murderers, were born), as well as the socio-political transformations in the contemporary Poland. A case of a 61-year-old African-American male who sexually assaulted and murdered four individuals, of different ethnicities and both genders, is reported. The subject additionally engaged in sexual activity with each victim postmortem. Each murder is reviewed in detail, and the subjective state of the offender during the murders is commented upon. Psychological test data are reviewed. The subject met criteria for several Axis I disorders, including Bipolar I Disorder, Pedophilia, and Sexual Sadism, and met criteria for Axis II diagnoses of Narcissistic and Antisocial Personality disorder. He was additionally classified as a Psychopath, which, in combination with his Sexual Sadism, general psychiatric state, and exquisite sensitivity to humiliation, led to his decision to murder.

Although there is a growing popular emphasis on the phenomenon, there is a paucity of rigorous research in the area. The present article reviews existing motivational theories of serial murder and proposes additional explications from a range of disciplines. Suggestions for future research are presented and integrational approaches are encouraged.

Данные преступления всегда признаются резонансными, так как характеризуются особой жестокостью, агрессией и держат общество в страхе. Отсутствие развернутых характеристик серийных убийств подчеркивает их высокую степень латентности. Цель статьи - анализ и описание свойств, закономерностей, причин и условий совершения преступлений данного характера, а также свойств личности преступника. Методологическую основу исследования составляет диалектический метод научного познания, отражающий взаимосвязь теории и практики. При подготовке работы использовались также следующие частнонаучные методы: биографический - изучение личностных качеств серийных убийц, статистический анализ - оценка количественно-качественных признаков серийных преступлений, анализ документов - использование информации, зафиксированной на бумажном и электронном носителе. В статье рассматриваются вопросы криминологической характеристики серийных убийств: анализируется понятие серийных убийств, рассматриваются количественно-качественные показатели, определяются основные детерминанты, изучается виктимологический аспект. The phenomenon of serial murders over the past hundred years has attracted the special attention of scientists around the world, including in the field of forensic psychiatry, psychology, criminology, victimology and other sciences. These crimes are always recognized as resonant, as they are characterized by special cruelty, aggression and keep society in fear. The lack of detailed characteristics of serial kills emphasizes their extremely high degree of latency. The purpose of the article is to analyze and describe the properties, laws, causes and conditions of committing crimes of this nature, as well as the properties of the person of the offender. The methodological basis of the study is the dialectical method of scientific knowledge, which reflects the relationship between theory and practice. The following private scientific methods were also used: biographical - the study of the personal qualities of serial killers, statistical analysis - the assessment of quantitative and qualitative signs of serial crimes, document analysis - the use of information recorded on paper and electronic media. The authors consider issues of criminological characterization of serial murders: the concept of serial murders is analyzed, quantitative and qualitative indicators are considered, the main determinants are determined, the victimological aspect is studied.

Serial murders attract attention from the media, mental health experts, academia, and the general public. We present a case of serial murders that took place in a limited area and which caused public anxiety and anguish in central India. All the victims were homeless beggars, who were bludgeoned to death (crush injury). Individual murders were initially investigated by different police stations; fortunately, since they sent all the bodies to a common autopsy centre, a forensic pathologist was able to link all the cases, the first person to do so. This emphasises the need for sharing information among police stations and autopsy centres.

Abstract Alfred Hitchcock in Psycho (1960) makes the corpse of an ordinary woman both an object of surveillance and a source of active watching. Mrs Bates and Marion in Psycho, Brenda and Babs in Frenzy (1972) may be seen as predecessors to the series of dead women figuratively staring back in films such as The Silence of the Lambs (Demme, 1991) and Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (Tykwer, 2006). The corpses do not merely offer themselves up as ciphers to be decoded. They reveal the lack in the perpetrators. Hitchcock's Frenzy relies on female bodies for clues to the murders. Hitchcock plays the vital role of bringing about a transition in the way in which women's bodies are to be treated in films, a transition from bodies shrouded by mist and darkness of the noirs to the exhibitionism of naked corpses in brightly lit settings. This article shows that abandonment of the usual tropes of visual impediments such as darkness and fog in Hitchcock's later films suggests a continually developing process of urban surveillance that aids in dehumanizing the victims. Further the post-murder masculinist investigative gaze forces a kind of mock-life on the victims through the relentless search of a killer's live signs on their dead flesh.
