Antimicrobial susceptibility, integron carriage, genetic relationship and presence of some important virulence genes of the integron-carrier strains of Shigella sonnei (n = 230) and Shigella flexneri (n = 22) isolated from stool samples of patients in Hungary between 1998 and 2008 were investigated. Sixty-seven per cent (168/252) of the strains were resistant to sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (SxT) followed by streptomycin (S, 47 %), ampicillin (A, 32 %) and tetracycline (Tc, 28 %). Thirty-six per cent (90/252) exhibited multidrug resistance, mostly showing SSxTTc or ASSxTc, ASSxTTc resistance

The work is devoted to the study of susceptibility to antibiotics of 42 strains of Shigella sonnei isolated from patients involved in three food-borne outbreaks that occurred in the North-Western region of Russia in 2018. All strains belonged to biovar IIg, showed resistance to tetracycline and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. The strains were susceptibility to nitrofurantoin, ciprofloxacin, but were resistant to nalidixic acid, were susceptibility to aminoglycosides (gentamycin, tobramycin, and amikacin), and resistance to streptomycin. All strains were susceptibility to azithromycin (MIC 8 mg/

Abstract The relative retention of the indigenous morphological, biochemical, and serological characteristics by Shigella sonnei was tested under various storage conditions (room temperature, refrigeration, freezing at −20°C and at −70°C, and lyophilization). The use of a selective (desoxycholate citrate) agar rather than a nonselective (brain heart infusion) agar gave a lower conversion rate of smooth to rough colonies, and the percentage of rough colonies derived from cultures stored for prolonged periods increased under all conditions. With respect to biochemical characteristics, there were

Our objective was to evaluate the presence and microbiological characteristics of Shigella in children with acute diarrhoeal disease (ADD), attended at the Paediatric Hospital of Posadas, Misiones between 2016 and 2019. All ADEs documented in the laboratory were included. Standardised microbiological techniques were used. We considered age groups: infants (L)≤ 2 years, preschool (PE): 3-5 years, school (E): 5- 14 years. We recorded 106/2128 (5%) Shigella spp. isolates, with a higher frequency in summer (54.5%). Background Shigella sonnei is a pathogen of growing global importance as a cause of diarrhoeal illness in childhood, particularly in transitional low-middle income countries (LMICs). Here, we sought to determine the incidence of childhood exposure to S. sonnei infection in a contemporary transitional LMIC population, where it represents the dominant Shigella species. Methods Participants were enrolled between the age of 12–36 months between June and December 2014. Baseline characteristics were obtained through standardized electronic questionnaires, and serum samples were collected at 6-month

Outbreaks of shigellosis associated with chopped parsley used as a garnish for foods occurred in four states in the United States and in two Canadian provinces in 1998. This prompted a study to determine survival and growth characteristics of Shigella sonnei inoculated onto raw parsley. Two inoculum levels (∼103 and 106 CFU/g) were applied to parsley leaves, portions of which were then chopped. Inoculated whole and chopped parsley leaves were held at 4°C or 21°C for up to 14 days. Initial populations of the organism on chopped parsley receiving high or low levels of inoculum increased by appro

Background: Shigella species are the leading cause of human shigellosis. In Zambia, more than 30% of children experiencing diarrhea are infected with Shigella species. The increasing resistance of Shigella species to the recommended therapy is of great concern. Therefore, this study investigated the antibiotic resistance profiles and phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of Shigella isolates at the largest referral hospital in Zambia. Methodology: Of the forty-eight archived presumptive Shigella isolates, thirty-two were serologically confirmed and subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility
