Streszczenie:
Small wooden furniture businesses in East Indonesia feel pressure from the furniture businesses of the West Indonesia, in particular from Jepara, due to a fierce international rivalry. The study is intended to analyze the effect of market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation on competitiveness with innovation as an intervening variable. The study distributed 189 questionnaires to the small wooden furniture producers in the South and West Sulawesi Provinces. The collected data were analyzed by structural equation modeling using maximum likelihood approach. The study found that market orientation, entrepreneurial orientation, and innovation contributed to leveraging the competitiveness of small furniture producers. With this model, market orientation is found to have a positive and significant effect on innovation and competitiveness, both with a small-medium effect. Interestingly, the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and innovativeness shows a positive, significant, and the most dominant of all structural causal relationships in the model, with a small-high effect. In contrast, the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and competitiveness has a positive and significant effect with a smaller path coefficient. The study also found that innovation shows a positive and significant effect on competitiveness with a relatively small impact. AcknowledgmentThe case of small wooden furniture businesses of Indonesia is part of collaborative research between the research teams from Hasanudd in University and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. In carrying out this study, the involvement of a number of agencies cannot be ignored: the Cooperative and Small and Medium Size Regional Office of South and West Sulawesi Province and Cooperatives and the Small and Medium Size Regional Office of Makassar City.

“Small-for-size” livers arising in the context of liver resection and transplantation are vulnerable to the effects of increased portal flow in the immediate postoperative period. Increased portal flow is an essential stimulus for liver regeneration. If the rise in flow and stimulus for regeneration are excessive; however, liver failure and patient death may result. Somatostatin is an endogenous peptide hormone that may be administered exogenously to not only reduce portal blood flow but also offer direct protection to different cells in the liver. In this review article, we describe key changes that transpire in the liver following a relative size reduction occurring in the context of resection and transplantation and the largely beneficial effects that peri-operative somatostatin therapy may help achieve in this setting.

Video watermarking is one of the most widespread techniques amongst the many watermarking techniques presently are used; this is because the extreme existences of copyright abuse and misappropriation occur for video content. In this paper, a new watermarking algorithm is proposed to embed logo in digital video for copyright protection. To make the watermarks more robust to attack, host frame and host embedding indices must be changeable. A new algorithm is proposed to determined host frames by plasma function, Host location indices in frames are also determined by another plasma function. Logo is divided using the mosaic principle, the size of mosaic blocks is determined initially according to the degree of protection, whenever the size of mosaic blocks is small, it leads to safe embedding, and vice versa. Digital watermarks are embedded easily without any degradation for video quality, In the other side, the watermarked is retrieved by applying the reverse of proposed embedding algorithm and extracted watermark is still recognizable. The experimental results confirm that watermark is robust against three types of attacks which are addition of Gaussian noise, JPEG compression, and rotation process.

Streszczenie:
The decoy state quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol is proven to be an effective strategy against the photon number splitting attack. It was shown that the 1-decoy state protocol, easier to implement in the practical QKD system, outperforms the 2-decoy state protocol for block sizes of up to 108 bits. How intensity fluctuations influence the performance of the 1-decoy state protocol with finite resources remains a pending issue. In this paper, we present a finite-key analysis of the 1-decoy state protocol with intensity fluctuations and obtain the secret key rate formula about intensity fluctuations. Our numerical simulation results show that the stronger the intensity fluctuations, the lower the secret key rate for a small data block size of a few bits. Our research can provide theoretical implications for the selection of data size in the QKD system with intensity fluctuations.

In the context of the present dissertation an ecological study was performed about chironomids in Saidenbach Reservoir in the Saxony Ore Mountains, Germany during the five years from 2005 to 2010. A preliminary overall species analysis in 2005 showed that three species were most abundant: Procladius crassinervis, P. choreus and Chironomus anthracinus. Additionally, the species C. plumosus was examined because of its close relationship to C. anthracinus. The study is focussed on four subjects, whereby larvae and pupae of the four species were analysed. (1) The elaboration of a reliable method to distinguish the larvae of the two closely related species P. crassinervis and P. choreus on the basis of morphological criteria (imaginal disc development, larval head capsule size and body length) as well as the depth distribution of their pupae was a precondition to the profound analysis of their life cycles. (2) The investigation of the life cycle pattern of the four species was the second focus. The life cycle of the four species was found to be strongly influenced by abiotic conditions such as temperature, oxygen and biovolume of the phytoplankton. (3) The spatial and temporal distribution pattern of the four species was analysed in view of large scale differences over a depth gradient in one transect. Here, in all four species a shift in the mainly settled lake bottom area occurred. The young larvae of C. anthracinus, C. plumosus and P. choreus migrated during maturing and pupation towards shallower areas; P. crassinervis migrated to deeper areas. The distribution differences between two different bays showed that the two Chironomus species had higher densities in the bay with the higher inflow which resulted in a higher phytoplankton standing stock compared to the other species. A small scale distribution pattern analysis focussed on finding out whether the larvae were aggregated or randomly distributed. The vertical distribution analysis examined the swimming behaviour of the larvae. (4) The last aspect was an experimental setup exemplarily driven with C. anthracinus which showed that the migration was stimulated by the proximate factor temperature as pupae preferred warmer temperatures and young larvae colder temperatures. Altogether, the five year study about chironomids in Saidenbach Reservoir pointed out the complex reaction in the behaviour of an important part of the benthic community concerning the life cycle pattern (voltinism, pupation pattern), the changing in abundances (inter-annual and intra-annual) and the large scale and small scale distribution pattern under the rule of the most important environmental factors

Juhari, Ariff Syah. "Evaluation of competitive intelligence software for MSC-status small and medium-sized enterprises in Malaysia." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2009. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/13657.

Streszczenie:
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia, particularly In the information and communications technology (lCT) sector, are faced with an increasingly volatile environment. The Malaysian business scene has opened up their markets to the world where smaller businesses find themselves competing with newly launched multinational subsidiary and subdivision companies, along with the large local firms. The Malaysian Government has launched several campaigns and support for smaller local businesses to be more competitive and to continuously compete at par with these larger companies. This research project supports the Malaysian Government's objective of instilling a more structured approach towards a more competitive SME by focusing on the management of competitive information related to these companies. In recognising the rising need for competitive support, management and executives are increasingly relying on a concept called Competitive Intelligence (Cl), a systematic and ethical process for gathering, analysing, and managing information that can affect a company's plans, decisions, and operation. In managing competitive information, several companies have emerged especially to develop online tools and software that would enhance the Cl process and the value competitive intelligence brings to organisations. The success of these Cl software tools depends, however, on the sophistication of an organisation's understanding of the Cl process and scope of usage. Different companies derive different values from different approaches to competitive intelligence, and therefore require a flexible tool that is very specific to the company's needs. Therefore, this research investigated the structures and contexts of Malaysian Small and Mediumsized Enterprises (SMEs) based on competitive intelligence (Cl) concepts to derive a more customised approach to the use of Cl for SMEs in the ICT sector, as well as in the selection of appropriate Cl software. Mintzberg's approaches to analysing organisational structures and contexts, Bouthillier and Shearer's Intelligence Cycle, Herring's Key Intelligence Topics, and Davis' concept of effectiveness were used in two main stages. The first stage involved identifying the nature and range of SMEs, which exist under Malaysia's Multimedia Super Corridor, a government benchmarking body for local businesses. This gives an account, on the basis of cluster analysis, of a taxonomy of SME categories consisted of ten clusters. The relationships between the categories were also examined in the first stage of the research. The relationships and clusters found in the first part of the research offered the basis for the second part of the research, which constructs the criteria for evaluating online tools and software for competitive intelligence. The evaluation criteria are then used to evaluate eight Cl-ready software packages in finding suitable tools for the different categories of SMEs. Finally, the research concludes with a study of the prospective users' perceptions of effectiveness in SMEs drawn from the identified clusters. This 'multiple constituency' approach to understanding effectiveness evaluates both Davis' concept of effectiveness (usefulness), as well as the differential evaluations of perceived effectiveness. The research findings provide evidence of a range of SME structures in a variety of contexts. Levels of importance placed on different levels in the Cl process are identified, as well as aspects that need support, automation and/or augmentation. The software evaluation in the second part of the research provided ten recommendations of suitable software package(s) for each SME cluster. However, an initial review by SME managers of perceived effectiveness mostly did not reveal results that were parallel to the findings from the software evaluation study. All in all, the research confirms that SMEs can be analysed by clusters but further research would be necessary to confirm the effectiveness of using the recommended Cl software over a longer period of time.

Streszczenie:
Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the value-added forest products sector play an important role, both socially and economically, in forest dependent communities across Canada, yet the long-touted potential of the sector has not been attained. An assessment of the success factors as well as the barriers to success for SMEs operating in the value-added forest products sector is a key step in ensuring that firms operating in the sector, as well as policy makers at various levels of government are better informed. This will allow the firms in the sector to leverage their strengths and address their weaknesses in order to have a strong contingent of successful value-added forest product SMEs vital to sustaining community wealth. The study is conducted through an in-depth examination of four SMEs in the value-added wood products sector in British Columbia. The four cases represent different types of businesses with varying levels of performance. The results of the study indicate that management skills, access to skilled labour, access to fibre supply, and access to financial capital are fundamental success factors. The entrepreneurs and industry experts involved in the study suggest that for British Columbia’s value-added forest products sector to prosper, the development of management skills and skilled labour requires greater attention. Consequently, increases in the level of investment in skilled labour training and management skill development options that are easily accessible to entrepreneurs in rural communities, in conjunction with the provision of timber at a scale and means that is more suited to small and medium-sized value-added firms were suggested as means to reduce barriers to success faced by SMEs in the value-added sector.

Streszczenie:
Quality security of sensitive data and key assets becomes now a question of absolute necessity for a company of any size and orientation. History of evolution of information security began particularly in environment of large organizations, that processed a large amount of data. It is logical that it was larger and richer companies which often have sufficient resources to invest in the security of their assets. Moreover, relatively large percentage of small and medium-sized businesses have about the security of its information somehow faulty ideas. More and more attackers are focusing on mid-sized organizations, which are insufficiently protected and they find it much easier to get to their sensitive data. Small and medium-sized companies are often preventing the implementation of certified standards. The reason is the fear of heavy formal administration, which is often required for certification, but is mainly for small businesses unnecessary and burdensome. For medium-sized organizations (50-250 employees), the certain administration associated with information security is a necessity. Employees, as in small businesses, are familiar with each other, but already there is a certain degree of anonymity, which may trigger the fact that some employees will not respect security procedures, especially if they are not precisely defined, and compliance will not be regularly checked. It depends on several circumstances, whether the certification is appropriate for the organization or the establishment of their internal methodology for information security. Methodology of balanced information security, which is the subject of this article is primarily proposed for small and medium-sized businesses. Its aim is to define the most important and absolutely necessary criteria for information security so that the system meets the requirements of a comprehensive solution of the issue. On the other hand, it seeks how to minimize the administrative burden for these organizations, which is, as mentioned above, one of the main reasons, why companies hold a negative attitude to the most widespread certifications. The methodology identifies four main areas of information security management system in a company. It includes an audit which specifies the quality level of particular areas of information security in the organization. If any of the studied areas is found insufficiently protected, effecitve measures are offered to improve the situation. The ultimate solution is a condition of a system where all the key areas of information security management of the organization are at the appropriate level and the system can be considered balanced.

Streszczenie:
碩士<br>朝陽科技大學<br>企業管理系碩士班<br>96<br>Abstract In the 21st century of global competition, businesses in Taiwan are facing stiff competitions and pressures resulted from the globalization of China economy, the rise of the BRIC, and the eastern European countries and ASEAN gradually becoming developed countries. Taiwan has about 97% of the businesses which currently categorized as small to medium size companies with minimal funding and human resources support; therefore, at the moment, it is both urgent and utmost important to transform these small to medium size companies from their OEM operations into branded businesses for enhancing Taiwan businesses’ overall global competitiveness. Through in depth interviews and secondary data analysis with five Taiwan companies who had already successfully established their brand names, this research had introduced main influencing factors and periodical strategic focuses in the process of building up brand name. The major research conclusions were as followed: 1. During the stage of initial introduction: business lifecycle and the level of competitiveness are among the first external environment factors to consider for establishing brand name; other crucial factor in brand building is that companies must have fine product qualities, production technology, and human resources. 2. During the growth stage: Channel establishments and branding strategy has direct impact on the expansion of brand name awareness; continuous investment on innovation works can extend consumers’ brand loyalty; global production positioning can further enhance capabilities for brand support. 3. During the maturity stage: the benefit of integrating external and internal business functions can create long term brand competition edges; brand image and corporate citizenship can generate bonding with consumers and sustain lasting brand growth. This research had proposed three suggestions for small to medium size companies who want to engage in the branding business: 1.Strategic consideration: to avoid disadvantages like scarce financial resources and look for advantages like production technology; chances are companies can successfully establish brand names. 2.Market selection: minimize confrontations with existing name brands during the initial introduction and promote chances of success. 3.Innovation investments: subject companies had huge investments in research and development; it is essential to brand management. Keywords: small to medium size companies, brand building, brand history, key factor, marketing

碩士<br>逢甲大學<br>經營管理碩士在職專班<br>98<br>In the era of pluralism of information, the displaying device is no longer like the traditional one that only provides the display function, and in stead, it becomes a two-way interface between the human and computer. Currently, the primary task in Taiwan’s electric industry is to use the existing advantages and carry out the tactics among relevant industries, and then create the next peak of growing waves. This constructs the purpose of this study. The main purpose of this study is to analyze the case of iPhone that creates the marketing development of applications of “multi-point touch”. Holak (1988) depicts that a customer must evaluate a new product by simultaneously considering the product character and the customer preference; therefore, the topic of “Key Successful Factors for Multi-touch in Small & Mid-size TFT-LCD” is chose in this study. This study evaluates the key successful factors for multi-touch in small and mid-size TFT-LCD from three aspects of “perceived product attributes”, “consumer traits” and “environmental variables”. Besides, by reviewing literatures and interviewing experts from the consumers of electronic products, the final 12 key successful factors are defined. Furthermore, the separate survey and questionnaire of analytic hierarchy process (AHP) are progressing with different experts and academic scholars. Finally, the conclusion, suggestion and future relative studies are made in this study. This study adapts the model presented by Holak in 1988, which includes the “perceived product attributes”, “consumer traits” and “environmental variables” as the three target dimensions. The 12 sub-criteria of evaluations are as follows, microelectronics technology, multi-touch technology, intuitive interface, patent protection, Apple Inc. brand value, the impact of media, Apple Inc.&apos;&apos;s family success, fashion trends, WINDOWS 7 effects, market adoption of mobile communications, popularity of flat panel displays, and emergence of internet. This study finds that the relative importance orders of target dimensions are consumer traits, perceived product attributes, and environmental variables. This study finds that “consumer traits” is the main focus for multi-touch in small and mid-size TFT-LCD, and “Apple Inc.’s family success” and “Apple Inc. Brand value” are ranked the first place and the second place respectively in the sub-criteria of evaluations. Finally, this study concludes that the trend of future goods of relevant industries or developing focus of the market must move towards and meet consumers’ demands, and the experiences with brands strongly affect consumers’ purchase intentions.

This is the first detailed analysis of a completely excavated northern Iroquoian community, a sixteenth-century ancestral Wendat village on the north shore of Lake Ontario. The site resulted from the coalescence of multiple small villages into one well-planned and well-integrated community. Jennifer Birch and Ronald F. Williamson frame the development of this community in the context of a historical sequence of site relocations. The social processes that led to its formation, the political and economic lives of its inhabitants, and their relationships to other populations in northeastern North America are explored using multiple scales of analysis. This book is key for those interested in the history and archaeology of eastern North America, the social, political, and economic organization of Iroquoian societies, the archaeology of communities, and processes of settlement aggregation.

While international trade and investment is still dominated by larger multinational enterprises (MNEs), small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly reaching out beyond their traditional domestic habitat. A significant number of SMEs today are engaged in transboundary trade and investment and in the wake of the digital revolution the phenomenon of ‘born global’ SMEs can be increasingly observed. In addition, many SMEs enter the global economy indirectly via global value chains. International economic law, with its traditional focus on MNEs and their interests, is only slowly waking up to this new reality. At the same time, it is increasingly recognized that the internationalization of SMEs provides the key to creating more sustainable and inclusive global economic growth. The 2015 UN Sustainable Development Goals, for example, expressly call for the facilitation of increased access for SMEs to international trade and investment. This book undertakes a first attempt at systematically analysing the interaction between SMEs and international economic law. The analysis covers a broad spectrum of international trade and investment law focusing on issues of particular interest to SMEs, such as trade in services, government procurement, and trade facilitation. Salient regional and transregional developments are taken into account, including the implications of the TPP and the TTIP negotiations for SMEs. Close attention is also devoted to the concern of many states that further liberalization of international trade and investment would unduly restrict the regulatory space necessary to protect and promote the legitimate interests of domestic SMEs.

The parish database shows major variations in trends and timings of population changes in less urbanized areas of Scotland. Even within parishes, people increasingly concentrated into larger villages and towns at the expense of more remote areas. The critical minimum size for settlements increased over time, but depended on distance from other larger places and on whether a locality became more than just a centre for agricultural activity. Mining and factory industry were key sources of growth even in many rural areas but caused major legacy problems as they collapsed. Fishing and its related activities increasingly concentrated on a small number of large centres. Transport hubs, administrative and school infrastructure, and large-scale retail facilities were dependent on, but also supported, population size. Agrarian systems varied widely across Scotland and each produced its own pattern of population sex ratios, migration, and change.

Young children who find mathematics very difficult are likely to encounter profound problems later on. Previous small-scale studies have indicated that early intervention can help them, but have provided insubstantial evidence. This chapter discusses the key features of a new mathematics intervention in England, Numbers Count, and analyzes the findings of a large-scale impact study of 8000 low-achieving 6- and 7-year-old children. After an average of 43 half-hour, one-to-one lessons in 3 months, their number age test scores had risen by 14 months with an effect size of .85. Their attitudes towards learning mathematics also improved substantially, with an effect size of .7. Children made strong progress irrespective of their background characteristics. It is suggested that the success of the intervention was due to its design, to its teachers’ professional development program, and to rigorous quality assurance. Subsequent changes are discussed.

AbstractTo prepare high-performance pervious concrete with excellent mechanical properties and permeability, an orthogonal test method is used to investigate the effects of water-to-binder (W/B) ratio, grading of small size aggregates, and target continuous void content on the mechanical properties and permeability of pervious concrete. The results show that the W/B ratio and grading of small-size aggregates have negligible effects on compressive strength and permeability. The target continuous void content is the key parameter in determining the permeability of concrete. The compressive strength must be controlled within a certain range to ensure a certain range of permeability. Only one permeability parameter is suitable for pervious concrete mix design.

AbstractThis study investigates the impact of firm size and market concentration on firm productivity in Indonesian manufacturing. Firm size has been enduring interest in studies on firm productivity as the impact can be positive or negative. On the other hand, market concentration has increasingly been a key concern in evaluating firm productivity. This study used firm-level panel data of 6,783 manufacturing firms (47,481 observations) across 33 provinces of Indonesia. Two methods were applied in estimating the data; those methods were adjusted-autocorrelation OLS and random effect GLS. The results show that firm size has a significant positive effect on firm productivity, indicating that a large-scale firm experiences higher productivity than a small size firm. In addition, market concentration appears to have a negative impact on firm productivity, suggesting that a firm in a more concentrated industry tends to be less productive. The implication of this study suggests that a firm produces on a large scale and competes in a less concentrated market.

AbstractMost modern encryption and authentication methods rely on generating random numbers for key generation, initial vectors, or nonces. A Random Number Generator is cryptographically secure if the sequences of numbers that it generates are unpredictable. They are typically grouped into two categories: Pseudo-Random Number Generators and True Random Number Generators. Small-size, low-cost true Random Number Generators have already been integrated into off-the-shelf devices such as smartphones, computers, and hardware security modules. In addition, applications involving particularly sensitive data can combine the output from two or more independent sources of randomness for improved security.

Formation of Si quantum dot array on ultrathin SiO2 is a key to develop a silicon-based resonant tunneling device[1] or quantum-dot floating-gate MOS memory[2]. In order to achieve room temperature operation of such quantum dot devices, the dot size should be as small as 3nm as evaluated by a simple quantum box model or coulombic charging energy. Recently it is demonstrated that Si quantum dots can be spontaneously produced on SiO2 by controlling the early stages of low-pressure chemical vapor deposition(LPCVD) of SiH4[1, 3]. For the purpose of the device application the dot size distribution should be minimized and the dot density per unit area must be as high as 1012/cm2. This paper describes a formation mechanism of nanometer-scale Si dots on SiO2 during LPCVD and a possible route to control the size distribution and the areal density of Si dots.

Streszczenie:
Today an increasing need for gas turbines with extremely low flow rates can be noticed in many industrial sectors, e.g. power generation, aircraft or automotive turbo chargers. For any application it is essential for the turbine to operate at best possible efficiency. It is known that for turbines the specific optimum achievable power output decreases with smaller size. A major contribution for this reduction in efficiency comes from the relative increase of aerodynamic losses in smaller turbine stages. In the early turbine design stage, easy and fast to use two-dimensional calculation codes are widely used. In order to produce qualitatively good results, all of these codes contain a diversity of loss models that more or less exactly describe physical effects which generate losses. It emerges to be a real problem that most of these empirical models were derived for rather large scale turbo machines and that they are not necessarily suitable for application to small turbines. In this paper many of the commonly known and well established loss models used for the preliminary design of radial turbines were collected, reviewed, and validated with respect to their applicability to small-size turbines, i.e. turbines of inlet diameter smaller than 40 mm. Comprehensive numerical investigations were performed and the results were used to check and verify the outcome of loss models. Based on the results, loss models have been improved. Furthermore, new correlations were developed in order to raise the quality of loss prediction especially for the design of small-size turbines. After receiving an optimum set of loss prediction models, all of them were implemented into a two-dimensional solver program for the analytical iterative solution of a complete turbine stage. Hence a powerful tool for preliminary radial turbine design has been created. This program enables the user to analytically evaluate the effects of changing key design properties on performance. These are amongst others the optimum rotor inlet flow angle according to the slip-factor definition, the value of flow deviation, and hence the optimum blade outlet angle for a minimum adverse flow-swirl at turbine outlet. Complementarily the turbine key performance indicators, e.g. pressure ratio, power output, rotational turbine speed, and mass flow can be calculated for optimum efficiency of a given turbine geometry. The paper presents the most important loss models implemented in the new code and weights their relative importance to the performance of small size radial turbines. The data acquisition was done using the new code itself as well as accompanying full 3D CFD calculations.

Small and medium enterprises have been identified as one of the essential levers of development in EU countries. These business entities have effects on the rest of the economic system in terms of job creation, product differentiation, and the use of local real production factors. The aim of this article is to focus on the benefit these companies could derive from the practice of influence and lobbying strategies. In EU countries, influence strategy still retains an unfavorable abstract and negative connotation. The influence strategy is based on two key levers: public relations and lobbying. On the one hand, PR aims to direct the attitude and behavior of the public on whose entities the economic activity of SMEs depends. On the other hand, lobbying is characterized by a series of direct or indirect interventions responsible for guiding the arbitration of public institutions in accordance with their interests. Thus, PR focuses on influencing the perception of things, while lobbying acts on the normative aspect of the environment. In this context, direct (grasstop) and indirect (grassroots) lobbying represent important tools for influencing and defending the interests of SMEs. The storytelling is a modern term in lobbying. These tools serve a targeted problem in order to arouse the interest of public decision makers. Mastery of the media universe and legislative context is vital to the development of lobbying.

Streszczenie:
Industry 4.0 adoption is expected to profoundly impact the entire spectrum of industries, especially in manufacturing. By using a confluence of automation, data, and digitalisation, Industry 4.0 aims to radically transform how organisations operate presently while increasing productivity, enhancing flexibility, reducing costs, and improving efficiency. More companies are strategically embracing Industry 4.0 approaches to leverage opportunities arising from newly connected computers and increasingly autonomous automation systems (e.g., robotics), equipped with intelligent machine learning algorithms that control the robotics without much human input. In these 'smart' factories, cyber-physical systems (i.e., independently operating systems that self-optimize and communicate with each other, and ultimately optimize production) monitor the physical manufacturing processes and play an increasingly important role in terms of decision-making. Industry 4.0 signifies three mutually interconnected factors, namely digitisation and integration of any technical-economic networks, digitisation of products and services, and new market models. At the core of this new smart manufacturing paradigm is the Internet of Things that drives the conversion of traditional factories into a 'smart' manufacturing environment called "Industry 4.0", resulting in an increasingly intelligent, connected, and autonomous factory with dynamic capabilities. Smart manufacturing technologies include big data processing, machine learning, advanced robotics, cloud computing, sensors technology, additive manufacturing, and augmented reality. By using predictive big data analytics, deep learning, or sentiment/image analysis, business leaders can identify patterns and trends in vast reams of big data. It allows them to make 'smarter' decisions (e.g., about the loss of customers or the necessary service inspection of equipment) and potentially to become more competitive in real-time. Based on case study research on small manufacturing firms in Singapore, we explore how local SMEs adopt Industry 4.0 solutions. We shed light on the drivers and barriers of Industry 4.0 adoption to better understand current business dynamics, potential human issues, focus areas, and initiatives to smoothen this implementation. The study is part of a wider Industry 4.0 study of key specialists and decision-makers across Government agencies, Institutes of Higher Learnings, suppliers of Industry 4.0 technology, business associations, etc. Technology push by the Government with robust funding and training support, skilled labour shortages including imported labour dependence, productivity issues and the pressure to innovate business models due to increased competition are propelling SMEs to adopt Industry 4.0. Some challenges include high investment costs, ROI concerns as well as capability and mindset issues. The paper contributes to the minimal Asian management literature about Industry 4.0 matters in Asian SMEs.

This paper introduces a new probabilistic public key algorithm based on elliptic curves and show that it is secure. The security of the scheme is solely based on the difficulty of the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem while at the same time it has a constant message expansion for one encryption of a plaintext of any practical size. In the alternative algorithms, like Cramer-Shoup and PSEC, for a large plaintext, either the message expansion is proportional to its size or an additional security assumption is needed. Although some restrictions are posed on the public part of the key, we show how to easily find the needed parameters, and also suggest ways to make the public key as small as possible.

Test Time Adaptation (TTA) has garnered significant attention in recent years, with the research focus on addressing distribution shifts during test time. As one fundamental component of many TTA methods, the Batch Normalization (BN) layer plays a crucial role in enabling the model adaptability. However, existing BN strategies can prove detrimental when the batch size is (extremely) small. In numerous real-world scenarios, limited hardware resources or just-in-time demand often necessitates adjusting models with very small batch sizes, making existing methods less practical. In this paper, we first showcase and thoroughly analyze the negative transfer phenomenon in previous TTA methods encountering extremely small batch sizes. Subsequently, we propose a novel batch size-agnostic method called NanoAdapt to effectively mitigate the negative transfer even with batch size 1. NanoAdapt is composed of three key components: a dynamic BN calibration strategy that leverages historical information and the Taylor series to refine the statistics estimations, an entropy-weighted gradient accumulation strategy that uses the entropy of each sample's label prediction to weigh and accumulate the loss for backpropagation, and a novel proxy computation graph to capture the sample interactions. Extensive experiments are conducted to validate the superiority of NanoAdapt, showing its consistent efficacy in improving existing TTA methods.

Today supply chain management has become one of the crucial factors for gaining and sustaining a competitive advantage. Enterprises that can more effectively manage their supply chain network have a higher likelihood of success in the marketplace. To this end, companies need not only make the “make” or “buy” decisions but also differentiate across potential suppliers in order to improve operational performance, and hence, supplier selection is one of the key decisions aiding effective supply chain management. Many studies have also pointed out that the integration of product and supply chain is a key factor for profitability and efficiency. However, prior studies mostly address supply chain performance after the creation of a new product; and only a few studies discuss when and how to incorporate supply chain decisions during product design. In the studies that cover product design, product family and product platform concepts are presented as enabling vehicles for mass customization, which require a considerable investment, and hence might be out of reach for small to medium size enterprises (SME). Accordingly, there is a need to develop a methodology that can consider manufacturability and supply chain issues at the product design stage. This paper presents a graph theory based optimization methodology to tackle this problem. The supplier selection issue is considered by evaluating its impact on both engineering (e.g., process planning) and operational performance (e.g., cost and time), which are then aggregated as the supply chain performance at the conceptual design stage. A case study in the bicycle industry demonstrates the advantages of this methodology. The synchronized structure of the supply chain and the product design results in simultaneous optimization of both design and supply chain decisions during the early design stages.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of internal marketing communication strategies and employer branding approaches on strategic human resource management, as well as their effect on organizational change management. This will be achieved using a holistic narrative approach to research, examining current market trends, relevant and available scientific literature, and a case study on acquisitions of retail chains. The aim of the study is to develop a conceptual model of organizational change management based on communication strategies. The findings suggest that the developed conceptual model creates the necessary prerequisites and significantly influences the encouragement of effective leadership during changes, as well as reducing employee resistance in the process of implementing organizational changes. Also, this study offers a deeper understanding and supports decision-makers, while encouraging further research by scholars. However, it is limited by the descriptive approach, the limited availability of literature, and the small sample size.

Latin American and Caribbean countries have historically been known for their rates of land inequality, highest in the world. However, these countries also exhibit a high degree of heterogeneity in their patterns of land concentration and average farm sizes. These cross-country differences play a determining role in productivity of farms and the distribution of agricultural income. Constructing a new data-set matching agri- cultural census and household survey data, we provide suggestive evidence on the positive relationship between farm size and farm income and wages. We identify the prevalence of small farms and the resulting low agricultural incomes as an important mechanism contributing to high income inequality in agricultural regions. Low labor productivity in small farms appears as a key explanatory factor.

Streszczenie:
Like other Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Caribbean island economies have intrinsic characteristics that make them vulnerable to external shocks. The recent pandemic highlights the structural problems of small island economies. Due to their remote location and small size, islands lack economies of scale and rely on global supply chains, which are currently disrupted. Islands depend either on service-based economic activities like tourism, which are being affected during the current crisis, or on a single commodity, which makes them extremely vulnerable. Islands must rethink their approach to development, adopting one of sustainable development. The Sustainable Islands Platform aims to create a new approach that targets the needs of Caribbean islands and prescribes circular economy-inspired interventions in key areas such as sanitation, waste management, agriculture, fisheries, tourism, energy, transportation, and health. Traditional approaches have not proven successful in solving developing problems on SIDS. Therefore, a new concept that considers islands in a new way should be considered.

Streszczenie:
This working paper provides a summary assessment of the existing literature and data on digital forms of employment internationally. It illustrates the variability in how it is defined, how it is growing and what kind of risks are associated with these developments. Evaluation of these types of jobs is divided. On one hand, optimists point to the attractions and relative ease in finding employment on digital platforms; on the other hand, more critical perspectives argue that these employment contracts can result in exclusion from social protection systems. The evidence indicates that while overall a relatively small proportion of all employment digital work is growing, both on platforms as well as adoption amongst more traditional companies. The characteristics of digital workers can vary by region and occupation. Overall, they tend to be predominantly younger and more likely male, with a growing number of women albeit in particular occupations. Skills and earnings levels vary but the key issues of disputes is around pay, conditions and employment status. The consequences of this form of work for those with lower skilled digital employment can undermine their social citizenship: they lack comparable employment rights, or when unemployed entitlement to adequate social protection. The potential polarisation effects of digital exclusion and deficits will severely hamper the wider benefits of transparency offered by these technologies. During the pandemic these trends have become more apparent. The imbalance of bargaining power and regulatory governance to bridge gaps in citizenship entitlements undermines the collective potential of policy makers and trade unions to address these challenges. Nevertheless, there is emerging evidence of innovative challenges and contestation of these gaps by both union organisations and national regulators attempts to adapt social protection

Axenrot, Thomas, and Erik Degerman. Ontogenetic variation in lacustrine European smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) populations as a response to ecosystem characteristics : an indicator of population sensitivity to environmental and climate stressors. Department of Aquatic Resources, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.54612/a.5qdiolcgj2.

Streszczenie:
Smelts play a key role in the pelagic ecosystem of large lakes in northern Europe and North America. In numbers, they often dominate the open water. In large lakes in Scandinavia (including Finland), European smelt (Osmerus eperlanus L.), a cold-water glacial relict, is commonly the most important prey for piscivorous fish species, but also acts by ontogenetic shifts as a predator on zoo-plankton, small crustaceans, fish larvae, mysids and occasionally – with increasing size - fish. Furthermore, the large numbers of smelt in the open water are important competitors to other planktivorous fish. Due to the diverse life histories and biological interactions of smelt in large lakes, its role in the food-web structure is expected to be variable. Smelt population dynamics, recruitment, size and age structure, growth, life history and mortality were analysed and compared for five Swedish lakes that varied in size, depth, morphology, trophic status and latitude to understand the varying life histories and roles in lake food-webs. The results showed that in shallow, eutrophic lakes smelt stayed small and short-lived, and populations experienced high mortality. In deeper, colder and less nutrient-rich lakes, smelts grew larger and older, and might shift to a piscivorous trophic level. By ontogenetic adaptions smelt seems to uphold high abundance and recruitment over a wide range of ecosystems, but in shallow lakes without cold water refuges smelt populations run the risk of collapsing on the occasion of extremely warm summers with drastic consequences for their predators and lake ecosystems.

Streszczenie:
Knowledge of flow regime, holdup and pressure drop is needed in order to design gas and oil pipelines confidently and to minimize construction and operating costs. Previous public studies of two-phase flow in inclined pipes have used small diameter pipes two inches in diameter or less, and have primarily used air and water as the working fluids at low pressure (near one atmosphere). Present design methods are based upon the results of these experiments. In most advanced analyses available today, the flow regime transition is governed by a Froude number, the balance between inertial and buoyancy forces. The primary objective of the work has been to obtain experimental data to challenge the present two-phase flow analysis methods for large pipe size, high gas density, and pipe inclination. Present analysis and design methods for two-phase flow in pipelines are based on correlations of data from small pipes of order 2-inches diameter or less, for air-water flows at pressures near one atmosphere. To achieve this objective, Creare performed experiments in an existing test facility with a special test section assembled for this project. Pipe diameter and gas density are closer to prototypical oil and gas pipeline conditions than previous experiments reported in the literature. The key experimental results include flow regime observations, pressure drops, and holdup measurements. The instrumentation in the test facility allows detailed characteristics of the flow such as slug velocity, slug frequency, liquid film velocity, and slug length to be measured in the slug flow regime.

Streszczenie:
We provide compelling evidence of the association between credit standards at loan origination in the corporate sector and default risk, a topic that has received little attention in the literature in comparison to the study of this relationship in the mortgage market. Using data from the Spanish credit register merged with corporate balance sheet information spanning the last financial cycle, we demonstrate that leverage and debt burden ratios at loan origination are key predictors of future corporate loan defaults. We also show that the deterioration in lending standards is strongly correlated to the build-up of cyclical systemic risk during periods of financial expansions. Specifically, limits on the debt-to-assets ratio and the interest coverage ratio could serve as effective tools to mitigate credit risk during economic expansions. We identify that the strength of these associations varies significantly across different sectors and is dependent on firms’ size, age and the existence of prior relationships with the bank. Real estate firms and small and medium-sized enterprises exhibit the strongest relationship between credit standards and future default. Overall, our findings provide strong support for the effectiveness of macroprudential measures targeting the corporate sector and contribute to providing guidance for the implementation of borrower-based measures in key segments of corporate credit.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Background. Optimal nutrition is needed to support individuals during pregnancy and placental development, fetal growth, and growth and development during infancy. Many foods contain digestible carbohydrates, or carbohydrates other than fiber/nondigestible carbohydrate. Digestible carbohydrates, including sugars and starches, are important sources of energy during these life stages. This review was designed to identify and summarize the evidence on the relationships between digestible carbohydrate intake during pregnancy and newborn size and development (Key Question 1) and gestational weight gain (Key Question 2), and between infant digestible carbohydrate intake and infant growth parameters, size, and body composition from birth to 24 months of age (Key Question 3). The results are intended to contribute to the update and expansion of the 2005 United States-Canadian Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for macronutrients. Methods. A medical research librarian designed and conducted a search of Ovid MEDLINE®, EMBASE, and Cochrane CENTRAL from 2000 to April 2025. Researchers manually reviewed reference lists. Using a priori specified inclusion and exclusion criteria, we triaged abstracts and conducted a dual, independent review of full-text articles. Risk of bias was assessed using criteria based on study design. Meta-analyses were not conducted due to limited data and heterogeneity of studies; included studies were synthesized qualitatively and described in tables and text. Results. Searches identified 3,194 abstracts. Eight studies in 10 publications were included for the three Key Questions. One randomized controlled trial was rated low risk of bias and a second was rated high; three nonrandomized studies were rated moderate and three were rated high risk of bias. Identified studies yielded low strength of evidence of no difference in infant weight, and insufficient evidence for length, head circumference, or size (small or large for gestational age) at birth (Key Question 1) and low strength of evidence of no difference in gestational weight gain given different amounts of digestible carbohydrate intake during pregnancy (Key Question 2). Evidence was insufficient to reach conclusions about the relationship between digestible carbohydrate intake by infants and growth outcomes (weight, length, and head circumference) and body mass index or other body composition outcomes up to 24 months of age (Key Question 3). Conclusions. We identified a small number of studies resulting in findings of no differences in infant size at birth and gestational weight gain by amount of digestible carbohydrate consumed during pregnancy. There was insufficient evidence to draw a conclusion about the relationship between the amount of digestible carbohydrate consumed during infancy and growth parameters and body composition up to 24 months of age. Factors contributing to the limited evidence available to answer the key questions in this review include: “digestible carbohydrate” is not commonly used in the scientific literature to categorize dietary carbohydrates as the alternative to fiber/nondigestible carbohydrate; most studies identified, those included in or excluded from the evidence base, were not designed to answer this review’s key questions; and there is an increasing trend toward reporting dietary consumption patterns instead of isolated nutrients and using principal component analysis to categorize and analyze dietary consumption patterns. While both types of information are important to informing how diet affects health, analyses of patterns do not provide the specific quantitative information needed for a systematic review of the effect of digestible carbohydrate consumption on maternal and infant outcomes. The limited evidence and our concerns about the lack of methodologic standardization and the validity of dietary intake measurement used to estimate usual dietary intake during pregnancy and lactation and of infants consuming human milk reduced our confidence in the findings and support the need for additional and more rigorous research on this topic.

In spite of the fact that they make up more than 90% of firms and account for a substantial portion of employment in these countries, rather little is known about the role of small- and mid-size enterprises (SMEs) in Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC) trade. In particular, there are a series of pending yet pivotal questions, such as: To what extent and how do SMEs contribute to their countries exports? How internationalized are LAC SMEs compared to SMEs in other world regions? How diversified are LAC SMEs exports across products and destinations? What are the key bottlenecks to LAC SME internationalization? This issue of the Journal intends to drive a holistic, thoughtful and targeted discussion of patterns of SME internationalization and its major bottlenecks and how they can be (or not) mitigated most effectively.

Streszczenie:
We assess the non-contributory cash transfer systems in 17 Latin American and Caribbean countries to identify factors that keep them from reducing poverty and inequality. To perform this assessment, we analyze three dimensions of size (number of beneficiaries, size of transfer per beneficiary, and size of total budget) and three dimensions of targeting (coverage, leakage, and quality of demographic targeting). We identify 67 programs, which fall into three broad categories: conditional cash transfers, non-contributory pensions, and other transfers. We use an international poverty line of 6.85 dollars PPP per day (similar to the average national poverty line of upper middle-income countries) and adjust survey weights to correct for the fact that household survey data often underestimates the official number of transfer beneficiaries compared to administrative sources. We show that two key factors limit the effect of cash transfer programs on poverty and inequality: the small size of their transfers and their historic under-coverage of the population living in poverty. Transfers represent approximately 33% of the poverty gap. Additionally, only 55% of the population in poverty benefits from these programs. Forty-one percent of people living in households that receive at least one non-contributory transfer are above the poverty line. Children and Indigenous people are underrepresented, relative to their poverty rate, in the rosters of beneficiaries. Brazil, Suriname, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Panama, and Uruguay consistently earn the highest scores across the assessment categories. Our policy recommendations include: (i) intensifying efforts to increase coverage among the poor, using modern poverty mapping techniques along with active, on-the-ground searches and (ii) recertifying eligibility for transfer programs more frequently by using highly interoperable administrative data and social registries. Both efforts are needed to create more efficient income protection systems that address both structural and transient poverty.

Price, Roz. Private Sector Investment in the Clean Energy Sector in the Pacific Islands. Institute of Development Studies, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2022.132.

Streszczenie:
Most Pacific small island developing states (SIDS) have ambitious renewable energy targets which call for huge investment, a significant part of which is expected to come from the private sector (IFC, 2021). Although there are around 40 renewable energy projects across the Pacific SIDS either already operating, under construction, or planned for commissioning in the next decade, they are still heavily reliant on imported fuel. Given the huge funding gap in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate objectives in developing countries, private financing has been advocated for as the solution for the shortfall, as it has a large pool of capital available and catalytic properties that could effectively scale-up the “reach” and the scope of influence of public financing (Samuwai, 2021). Private sector partners are particularly critical to supporting SIDS as they often struggle to access international capital markets due to their high debt levels, lack of creditworthiness or small market size (UN-OHRLLS, 2022). However, there is still a general lack of private sector financing in the renewable energy sector in the Pacific SIDS (PIFS, 2018; Samuwai, 2021). Whether private finance mobilisation for clean energy is realistic at the scales needed in the Pacific SIDS is not answered clearly in the literature, although much of it is based on the assumption that there is no real alternative to private sector investment. This rapid review hence explores some of the key drivers, constraints and opportunities to the mobilisation and scale-up of this private sector investment.
