Streszczenie:
Ticks are responsible for the largest number of transmissions of vector-borne diseases in the northern hemisphere, which makes the risk from tick bites a serious public health problem. Biological scientific research and prevention studies are important, but they have not focused on the population’s perception of tick bite risk, especially at a spatial level. This exploratory article sets out to study this point through an innovative methodology involving the collection of 133 mental maps associated with a semi-structured interview and a socio-demographic questionnaire collected in the Massif Central region, France. The results show a strong link between the representation of the tick bite risk and the representation of particular landscapes. Forests appear as dangerous for the population, especially in the traditional activities of family walking or hiking. This calls into question overly anxiogenic prevention approaches that neglect the impact on practices in risk-prone spaces. It accentuates the need for localized education measure to improve knowledge about tick biology and avoid stereotypical and unnecessary negative representations associated with the environment.

Pulmonary tuberculosis has been a prominent representation of illness in theater and cinema since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Despite the growing understanding of tuberculosis as a contagious disease during the bacteriological era, the theater and cinema primarily emphasized its representational advantages. Rather than focusing on propaganda and documentary films, these mediums found tuberculosis to be a convenient element for “romantic storytelling” due to its suitability for dramatic portrayal. Furthermore, the primary architectural typology for convalescence for tuberculosis patients, known as sanatoria, also served as exceptional film sets due to their anti-urban features that evoke a sense of “voyage” for the audience. This study thus analyzes three films that explore the medico-social reflections of tuberculosis on the mid-twentieth century healthcare architecture which are also noted for their exploration of tuberculosis, focusing on its cinematic benefits such as “easy acting,” “romantic storytelling” and “visual and spatial aesthetics.” These films also make use of the sanatoria facilities’ venues, spaces, and architecture to create visually appealing and spatially engaging aesthetics. These films are Una Breve Vacanza (A Brief Vacation, Vittorio De Sica, 1973), Učitel Tance (The Dance Teacher, Jaromil Jireš, 1995), and Kelebeğin Rüyası (A Butterfly’s Dream, Yılmaz Erdoğan, 2013). These films not only convey information about the disease and the locations where patients recovered in three different global sanatoria cases, but also serve as valuable archival documents by offering insights into the socio-spatiality of the disease in architecture and cinema.

The article explores how spaces aimed at improving accountability in health systems are socially produced. It addresses the implications of an initiative to promote patient involvement in government-funded research in the context of a large cancer research network in England. We employ a socio-spatial theoretical framework inspired by insights from Henri Lefebvre and Judith Butler to examine how professional researchers, doctors and patients understand and perform accountability in an empirical context. Our data reveal fundamental tensions between formally required and routinely enacted dimensions of accountability as these are experienced by patients. Consequently, our analysis argues for a need to challenge abstract, professionalized discourse about accountability in health services by acknowledging embodied spaces of representation, in which patients themselves can contribute to making participatory accountability a reality. We suggest that such a shift will provide a more rounded appraisal of patient experiences within health research, and health systems more widely.

Census and other socio-economic survey data collected at household and settlement level are aggregated and results are presented for specific administrative units. The wide and increasing availability of census and socio-economic data, tools like GIS with an ease to use and advances in methodology has allowed increasing and refined GIS mapping of census variables. However, it is less emphasized that the result of analysis and presentation is always dependent on the unit of analysis. Data aggregation, choice of data classification method and spatial scale all have effect on mapping result. When administrative boundaries are restructured, it necessitates the aggregation of census data of one administrative level to another. In this context, the current paper explores the scale and zoning effect (changing boundary, changing number of units and data aggregation) on mapping census data. It explores the effect of four data classification methods at two spatial scales. Secondary data sources like local administrative boundary of Bajhang district and economically active population in agriculture is selected as representative census variable for mapping. GIS tool is applied for data mapping and analysis. The study found the higher calculated correlation value (0.88) for the restructured spatial units. The distribution of number of spatial units varied significantly between four data classification methods while plotted against the old boundary but there was not much variation in case of newly restructured boundary. The study found that zoning particularly, from smaller to larger units has blurred the spatial pattern visualization leading to a loss of the preferential information. The study concludes that the restructuring of administrative boundaries into larger unit has simplified the detail for spatial representation and has introduced additional generalization. For policy level analysis, use of data available at one level of the spatial unit when aggregated to higher level should be analyzed carefully using different data classification methods and visualization tools because scaled spatial representation matters in planning and policy aspect. It is meaningful to analyze data at different spatial scale to visualize and identify spatial variation.

The concept of time has cultural characteristics, as it is the product of a symbolic communicative context that draws its characteristics from its founding group. Hence, the concept of time is shaped and represented mentally according to its socio-cultural context. Accordingly, it seems legitimate to examine its cultural specificity. This study tackles the nature of the spatial representation of the concept of time, as this latter is carried through cultural mediums, namely the oral and written language. The target group includes 32 unschooled children aged between 10 and 11. It is worth mentioning that many intercultural studies have indicated the existence of a definite, statistically significant relationship between the concept of time on the one hand and the direction of writing on the other hand. As the spatial representation of the concept of time in children of French culture is from left to right, influenced by the direction of French writing. Whereas, the spatial representation of the concept of time in children of French-Maghreb culture is in both directions (rightleft) and (rightleft), that is, in the form of congruous formula between the two directions of French writing from left to right and Arabic from right to left. The study confirms, in its third context, the spatial representation of the concept of time among uneducated children who do not know how to read and write, the results of previous studies on the concept of time in its relationship to the direction of writing. Where the space-time orientation is characterized by the multiplicity and diversity (rightleft, leftright, topbottom, topbottom...), regardless of the direction of presentation of the images by the experimenter. Studies, with their integral depth, confirm that it is a matter of cultural learning; the school institution as a social unit with symbolic and communicative contexts works to impart our concepts, including the concept of time, the characteristics of the socio-cultural context. The child, during his development and passing through socio-cultural institutions, integrates these characteristics in the framework of cognitive units that govern his subsequent cognitive functioning

The article highlights the relation of socio-culture with language, speech and fiction, being considered as semiotic systems, which allows establishing relationships between their components. The multi-faceted subordination of these systems, investigated from the mental level to linguistic implementation, has been studied. It has been shown how socio-culture is expressed in cultural codes, and they, in turn, are represented on the mental level in the concepts of statements and texts. Six main codes of culture has been characterized: somatic, spatial, temporal, object, biomorphic and spiritual. The examples of English, German and Chinese fables and parables show the diffuseness of these codes and the supply of signs of one code to reinforce another. Further implementation of concepts takes place at the language level. In the article, the method of frame analysis of concepts and their attributes using tabular frames has been used to study such implementation. Examples of the implementation of concepts and their attributes in texts and in the culture of the ethnic group have been given. The reflection of socio-historical and linguistic-cultural factors of socio-culture in fiction has also been studied. It has been specified and explained on the basis of examples from English, German and Chinese fiction that world fiction can reflect these factors directly or, to varying degrees, indirectly. The article singles out three degrees of such indirectness. Sociocultural factors are directly reflected in historical novels, more indirectly, as a background, in artistic works on everyday topics, about the life of people from a certain social group. Sociocultural factors are most indirectly represented in small genres of fiction (fable, parable, and others) in a figurative and symbolic form. The article provides examples of such figurative and symbolic display. Socio-culture, language and fiction together make up a hyper-system, which is the basis of the existence and development of every society.

The urban scenery that dominated Cairo since the nineteenth century was a spatial superimposition of tradition and modernity, represented in the social and architectural composition of the city. The cinematic medium in Egypt attempted to visualize such overlap through a vivid depiction of spatial transformations occurring within the micro and macro urban levels revealing hidden aspects of social order and organizational behaviour. This article sheds light on Egyptian filmmaker Hassan Al-Imam’s Cairo Trilogy films, based on the critically acclaimed novels by Nobel Prize laureate Naguib Mahfouz, where the story takes place in the heart of early twentieth-century Cairo spanning from 1917 to 1944. The films’ physical features illustrate the morphology of time and urban space constituting to the socio-spatial narratives of the local setting, a theoretical framework adopted by the authors named cine-spatial representation. Through the examination of such connection within the settings across the three films, the article reveals the influence of non-physical elements on the physicality of architectural and urban space, creating a visual narrative from social collectivism to individualist fragmentation.

Purpose. The article examines the processes of formation of spatial representations in the writer’s mind and ways of their representation in artistic creativity using the example of the biography of V.I. Dahl and his cycle of short stories, essays and fairy tales Scenes from Russian Everyday Life. The author uses the method of “imaginative geography” which is a combination of cognitive geography, psychology, linguistics, and literary studies methods.Results. One of the most important tasks of the research is to understand the specifics of modeling space in the writer’s mind, his original ways of creating geographical images, interpreting spatial representations in the context of literary (genre, style) discourse. Due to life circumstances, Dahl often moved, changed his place of residence and service, which influenced the structure of spatial thinking and modeling of the original spatial myth. Since the writer’s figurative geographical representations directly nourished his work and became an important element of the compositional and narrative structure of texts, the cognitive geographical context is most clearly seen in collections of his stories written on the basis of direct observations and practice of life, in particular, such as Scenes from Russian Everyday Life. This is especially true for the plots and stories based on Dahl’s trips to the Ural-Caspian region, Orenburg and the trans-Ural steppes.Conclusion. As the genre-cognitive analysis of the cycle and, in particular, the story Shard of Ice shows spatial impressions were most often represented in genre form of a fable, and were interpreted by the writer in mythological, historical, socio-psychological and ethological aspects.

This study complements existing literature on the spatial dimension of violence by focusing on how Jos’s neighborhoods were transformed from everyday residential areas to spaces of ethnic differentiation and violence. It employs an ethnographic study to map the emergence and development of ethnic strongholds and frontiers, two kinds of socio-spatial settings conceptualized to help explain the spread and patterns of violence across Jos’s neighborhoods.

Agroecological transition requires research and actions at the scale of local territories, in which agricultural activities interact with the environment and natural resources depending on a territory’s spatial configuration. To support the agroecological transition, there is an urgent need to design and implement new spatial configurations. For this, local public authorities in France can be considered as an interesting level of governance, because of their skills in spatial planning and their interest in agriculture, to ensure the ecological transition of their territory. However, new methodological frameworks need to be developed to support the design of new spatial configurations of territories, by constructing representations of the territory that consider both agricultural and socio-environmental issues, and by involving agricultural and non-agricultural stakeholders so that both can project themselves into the new spatial configurations. We developed a new methodological framework at the interface between landscape agronomy and landscape architects’ approaches, and experimented with applying this framework in the Urban Community of Dunkirk (UCD), which was performing a spatial planning approach called a Landscape Plan and proposing to create an Agricultural Park. The results show that the implementation of the methodological framework enabled the construction of a spatially explicit and place-based representation including the spatial issues of farming systems. These representations enable a local authority’s stakeholders to enhance their knowledge of the agricultural issues and consider changes in the spatial configuration of the Agricultural Park. In the discussion, we question the adaptation of the framework in rural territory and highlight the limitations of local authorities as the level of governance at which to address the agroecological transition at the territorial scale.

The article deals with the socio-psychological phenomenon of mental well-being among Astana city residents in connection with the representation of the ecological state of the urban spatial environment. The peculiarities of the representation of the ecological state of the urban spatial environment in the minds of citizens in correlation with mental well-being depend on their socio- psychological characteristics due to the time of residence in the city, the place of residence in various districts of the city, education and social status of residents. In this article conducted a theoretical analysis of psychological, urban-ecological and ecological-psychological studies of human interaction and the surrounding urban environment in conditions of intensive urbanization is carried out. Republic of Kazakhstan is undergoing a rapid process of urbanization, especially in the capital of the Republic – the city of Astana. In this regard, the interdisciplinary approach dominates in solving the problems of the city, in which the consideration of the actual socio-psychological problems of the city plays an increasingly important role. As a result of urbanization, urban residents develop negative socio- psychological characteristics manifested in their mental health, for example, marginalization, anomie, apathy, urban stress, aggressiveness, anonymity, etc. In these conditions, it is the mental well-being of citizens in correlation with the ecological living environment, depending on demographic and social factors, that acts as an effective indicator of the quality of the urban environment and the quality of life of citizens in general. Moreover, the residents themselves are the subjects of improving the urban space and their life in the city. As a result of the study, the authors conducted a diagnosis of mental well-being and socio-psychological and ecological perception of urban space, identified conclusions and proposed recommendations for further research of this phenomenon.

Data quality for GIS processing and analysis is becoming an increased concern due to the accelerated application of GIS technology for problem solving and decision making roles. Uncertainty in the geographic representation of the real world arises as these representations are incomplete. Identification of the sources of these uncertainties and the ways in which they operate in GIS based representations become crucial in any spatial data representation and geospatial analysis applied to any field of application. This paper reviews the articles on the various components of spatial data quality and various uncertainties inherent in them and special focus is paid to two fields of application such as Urban Simulation and Hydrological Modelling. Urban growth is a complicated process involving the spatio-temporal changes of all socio-economic and physical components at different scales. Cellular Automata (CA) model is one of the simulation models, which randomly selects potential cells for urbanisation and the transition rules evaluate the properties of the cell and its neighbour. Uncertainty arising from CA modelling is assessed mainly using sensitivity analysis including Monte Carlo simulation method. Likewise, the importance of hydrological uncertainty analysis has been emphasized in recent years and there is an urgent need to incorporate uncertainty estimation into water resources assessment procedures. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is a continuous time watershed model to evaluate various impacts of land use management and climate on hydrology and water quality. Hydrological model uncertainties using SWAT model are dealt primarily by Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) method.

Environmental/ecological movements featured in the Geography textbook: representations and contradictions Abstract This research discusses the disproportionality in quantitative and qualitative terms of the representations of environmental movements compared to other socio-spatial movements in a textbook collection for high school. This paper is a part of the subproject "The Geography textbook and the representations os social movements" this research is a part the big research by the scientific Initiation Program of the Universidade do Estado da Bahia (UNEB) called “Public Policies: public educational policies and their representations and materializations in basic schools”. The researched textbook collection was subjected to content analysis and it was observed that the environmental movements were mostly represented at the expense of the other movements addressed, and some of these are very important to Geography because of the themes they deal with, such as social movements in the countryside, the social movements for housing and the movement of those affected by dams. When comparing them, one can see the discrepancy in the representation between these and the environmental movements, the level of depth in the discussions and distribution across the collection shows a condition of under-representation of socio-territorial movements and an emphasis on environmental/ecological movements , above all, foreigners. Some conditions may explain this disparity, such as the fact that the some representations in the teaching materials comes from outside the Geography curriculum. The present study investigates the representation of Partition narratives in literary novels. This study focuses on important works that attempt to disentangle the complex relationships between space and narrative in the representation of the 1947 Partition of India, including "Train to Pakistan" by Khushwant Singh, "Azadi" by Chaman Nahal, "The Shadow Lines" by Amitav Ghosh, and "A Bend in the Ganges" by Manohar Malgonkar. This study attempts to elucidate how these writers employ geographical dimensions to portray the socio-political complexity, personal experiences, and communal memories connected to Partition using a multidimensional approach. The research will examine how spaces—both real and imagined—become effective means of expressing themes such as trauma, identity crises, displacement, and the search for belonging in the face of Partition's chaos. This study aims to offer light on the various viewpoints and voices present in Partition literature by investigating the relationship between space and narrative devices like setting, imagery, and symbolism. By closely examining the text and applying critical interpretation, it aims to provide fresh perspectives on how literary representation might influence readers' comprehension of historical events and human experiences. By clarifying the ways in which spatial dynamics and narrative techniques interact to produce rich and complex representations of one of the most important periods in South Asian history, this study ultimately seeks to further the conversation on Partition literature.

The so-called travelogues, that is, “notes” (“legends”) of foreigners about the Russian state, are considered. The main attention is paid to the representation in these literary works of the spatial representations of their authors in connection with the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (the Lithuanian-Russian state). The relevance of the study is due to the lack of demand for travelogues, despite the fact that they found themselves in the field of vision of large, sometimes famous historians. Another aspect of relevance is shown — the topicality of the study of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania itself and the travelogues, as such. The results of a comparative analysis of the spatial perception system of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by the authors of travelogues up to the famous “Notes” by Sigismund Herberstein are presented. In this regard, first of all, the idea of the relationship between “Lithuania”, “Russia” and “Muscovy” in the geographical space of Eastern Europe is analyzed. It is concluded that the spatial representations of those who traveled through these territories or wrote on the basis of available information changed over time, reflecting, albeit in a distorted form, the complex processes of socio-political and ethnic development that took place in Eastern Europe, where the so-called Kievan Rus’, there were new, young states: the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Russia, which actually grew up on the same ethnic basis.

Abstract Most studies on the identification and development of soccer talent have been one-dimensional in nature. Although some multi-dimensional analyses have been conducted, few research studies have assessed in any depth the socio-spatial factors influencing talent development. The aim of this particular study was to analyse variations in the international representation of clubs (n = 821) and countries (n = 59) in the development of players who took part in the 2014 FIFA Soccer World Cup. Clubs and countries were ranked and divided into quartiles according to the number of players developed between the ages of 15 and 21 (clubs and countries that developed players for at least three years between these ages) and the number of official league matches played by these players up to the age of 23. Significant variations were observed between clubs in terms of the number of developed players who took part in the World Cup and the number of official league matches played by these players up to the age of 23 (p < .05), and also between countries (p < .05). The findings reveal the need to carry out more in-depth studies into the type of training and competition engaged in by elite players in the period of development between the ages of 15 and 21. It may be the case that these factors are potentially decisive socio-spatial constraints in the development of soccer talent.

Streszczenie:
Youth is best understood as a transition period from childhood dependence to adulthood independence between 18 and 24 years old. This growth phase is crucial as the youth is more fluid than fixed age groups during this time and is exposed to issues and challenges from advancing technology and socio-cultural problems. However, in the context of the built environment, most of the current designs, namely in urban cities, lack concern towards the youth community's needs and aspirations and are less empowering in both representation and inclusivity of youth through the participatory design processes. This resulted in the provision of spaces that are not autonomous, enclosed, unsafe, and inaccessible, which did not fully manage to engage and improve the well-being of youth communities. Furthermore, fewer studies have been provided on designing youth spaces and places in Malaysia based on theoretical design principles and approaches. This is because many past studies focus only on youth social empowerment and political engagement, technology advancement and utilization amongst youth, youth employment and macroeconomics factors, intellectual wellness, and youth resiliency in current society. This study, therefore, is crucial as it aims to highlight how to design better youth spaces and places that concern socio-spatial aspects towards enhancing the needs of youth and aiming at holistic empowerment of them, making them more resilient. In achieving this, best practices of recognizing youth needs and interests will be collectively gathered through a qualitative approach using the crit sessions and focus group discussions from diverse youth backgrounds as methods for data collection. This includes referencing established case studies from literature reviews on prominent youth centres designed to support the findings. The determination of the findings is then transformed into design strategies focusing on socio-spatial aspects to accommodate youth needs in terms of a sense of attachment and community. This paper benefits designers and authorities as a reference for creating better youth spaces and places to accommodate youth needs from different walks of life and backgrounds.

The article is devoted to the study of tropes with spatial semantics based on the articles of “Kommersant Vlast” during the period of 2000 – 2005. In the early 2000s, this magazine was one of the most relevant sources of current economic and socio-political information in the country. The purpose of the paper is to identify the features of the metaphorical representation of the spatial culture code in political discourse. The definition of the term “trope” from the point of view of the cognitive approach is considered, as well as the definition of the term “culture code”. The author analyzes the connection of an individual’s language system with culture. The study of the term “culture code” in its connection with space allows considering the term “spatial culture code” in the material under study. The article states that the spatial culture code is an element of the process of metaphorization of spatial relations. The paper analyzes the features of the linguistic representation of the spatial culture code in tropes in political discourse. The author defines a trope with spatial semantics as the result of the cognitive mechanism of metaphorization, but its form in political discourse is not limited to metaphor. A number of headlines combine several types of tropes. The author studies the role of allusion in the headlines of the articles under consideration. The analysis carried out allows the author to conclude that allusion acts as one of the significant elements of creating an image. The author has considered the features of the formation of a trope with spatial meaning in political discourse based on the articles of the “Kommersant Vlast” during the period of 2000 – 2005 and concluded that literature is one of the most common reference areas.

Wildland fires are responsible for large socio-economic impacts. Fires affect the environment, damage structures, threaten lives, cause health issues, and involve large suppression costs. These impacts can be mitigated via accurate fire spread forecast to inform the incident management team. We show that a fire forecast system based on a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model coupled with a wildland fire behavior model can provide this forecast. This was illustrated with the Chimney Tops II wildland fire responsible for large socio-economic impacts. The system was run at high horizontal resolution (111 m) over the region affected by the fire to provide a fine representation of the terrain and fuel heterogeneities and explicitly resolve atmospheric turbulence. Our findings suggest that one can use the high spatial resolution winds, fire spread and smoke forecast to minimize the adverse impacts of wildland fires.

The energy transition of future urban energy systems is still the subject of an ongoing debate. District energy supply can play an important role in reducing the total socio-economic costs of energy systems and primary energy supply. Although lots of research was done on integrated modelling including district heating, there is a lack of research on integrated energy modelling including district cooling. This paper addressed the latter gap using linear continuous optimization model of the whole energy system, using Singapore for a case study. Results showed that optimal district cooling share was 30% of the total cooling energy demand for both developed scenarios, one that took into account spatial constraints for photovoltaics installation and the other one that did not. In the scenario that took into account existing spatial constraints for installations, optimal capacities of methane and thermal energy storage types were much larger than capacities of grid battery storage, battery storage in vehicles and hydrogen storage. Grid battery storage correlated with photovoltaics capacity installed in the energy system. Furthermore, it was shown that successful representation of long-term storage solutions in urban energy models reduced the total socio-economic costs of the energy system for 4.1%.

The article characterizes conceptual metaphors as one of the ways of structuring the genre of analytical review in modern Russian newspapers. The object of the study is spatial transfer models used by analysts (professional journalists and experts) to represent the image of the United States in the modern world. The research material consists of 138 spatial metaphors in 410 contexts extracted from 43 articles of six socio– political newspapers dating 2022–2023. The relevance of the topic is determined by the need to clarify the place of metaphors in modern mass media, which are undergoing significant changes both in genre-structural and linguistic aspects. The aim of the work is to identify the role of spatial metaphors in the conceptual representation of the United States in the genre of analytical review in modern Russian newspapers. Based on a comprehensive analysis using modern semantic, cognitive and discursive methods of textual material, it was found that in the genre under study spatial conceptual metaphors occupy an important place in the implementation of the main functions of the analytical genre – conceptual (logical-argumentative), evaluative and influencing. In particular, it is shown that in modern all-Russian newspapers, with the help of three basic models of spatial metaphorization (purposeful activity, being and development, systemic connections and relations), an integral image of the United States is formed as an active participant in global economic and socio-political processes, the main purpose of which is to assert its leadership position by subordinating allies and weakening opponents and competitors. The result of such actions is the growth of conflicts and general instability in the world.

The rapid advancement of cutting-edge technologies, such as virtual and augmented reality, is significantly influencing the transformation of the built environment. It has evolved from a static backdrop of activities to an active participant, creating an interactive space that responds to user actions spatial components and environmental data. This transformation has led to the emergence of a socio-technical network where all elements contribute to the interactive environment. Key to this evolution is the spatial agency as a reactive approach that revolutionizes the conceptualization of the built environment. By fostering innovation and improving the quality of relationships between human and non-human elements within dynamic socio-technical networks, this approach has garnered attention in recent studies aiming to redefine interactive spaces through the agency concept. In particular, Actor-network theory (ANT) has been adopted as a methodological and ontological tool to address this paradigm shift. However, there remains a lack of comprehensive representation and practical application of (ANT) in addressing the complexity of spatial agency within the design process of interactive spaces. To bridge this gap, this study explores the potential of (ANT) in illuminating the spatial agency process within interactive spaces, with a particular emphasis on the agency of technological objects. Through an examination of the “Spatially Intelligent Arts Center”, this research utilizes ANT's translation process via the Mapping Controversies technique to visually represent and analyze the agency of technological objects. The study's findings underscore the significant role of ANT's translation process in highlighting the agency of technological objects, including sensory interactions, augmented reality applications, memory lane and interactive projections, all of which enable continuous system development and real-time assessment. This exploration provides architects with a framework to analyze and steer the design of culturally intelligent spaces through the lens of the spatial agency approach.

Mountain lakes are highly sensitive to global change, requiring sustainable management strategies that support crucial ecosystem services (ES). However, small mountain lakes are rarely in the focus of ES assessments, and indicators are potentially lacking. Therefore, this study aimed at comprehensively assessing key ES of 15 study lakes located in two regions in the European Alps. We involved local stakeholders and experts to identify important ES. We quantified eight ES in non-monetary terms, using 29 indicators based on limnological, spatial and socio-economic data. Finally, we evaluated ES in relation to the socio-ecological context of the study lakes. The most important ES included surface water for non-drinking purposes, maintaining populations and habitats, outdoor recreation, aesthetic value, entertainment and representation, scientific research, education as well as existence, option, or bequest value. Quantitative results indicate varying levels of ES across the study lakes. Based on 12 different socio-ecological variables, we identified four groups of lakes differing also in five ES. Maintaining populations and habitats, aesthetic value as well as existence, option or bequest value were rather independent from the socio-ecological context. Our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of ES of mountain lakes, also supporting the development of sustainable management strategies in mountain regions.

The contemporary development process under the impact of neo-liberal policies has rapidly changed and restructured the socio-economic sphere of village life in India. The evolving pattern of rural society has turned its socio-economic structure into a complex space full of contradictions. As a result, the geographical space has been altered in terms of the representation of maps, information, and ideological interests. These spatial patterns have added to the complexities of space that have attracted scholars who relate it to new theories in developmental economics. The present paper attempts to analyse some of these aspects of the Indian rural society undergoing the process of development and displacement and its impact on different socio-economic groups, i.e., peasants, small and marginal farmers, share-croppers, artisans, agricultural labourers, and landless labourers. One-sided development, especially in the agrarian economy, disturbs the traditional skill, livelihood, and social order ultimately spreading the issues of unsustainable livelihood, hardship, and marginalization in peri-urban areas. Reskilling and participation in the decision-making process of the displaced people of developing society have become a challenging issue for policy orientation related to Development Induced Displacement (DID).

Interdisciplinary planning and evaluation of forest management is necessary for sustainable forest management (SFM) schemes involving multiple values of multi-stakeholders. Often, multi-objective forest-planning and evaluation encounter complexity and uncertainty due to "inexactness"— i.e., fuzziness, ambiguity, imprecision and variability — of spatial behaviours of ecological and human systems. This paper develops the possibility schema — from fuzzy sets and theory of possibility — for representation and evaluation of inexact spatial concepts, configurations, and processes, associated with forest ecosystem and stakeholder values. A hypothetical case of interdisciplinary research utilizing criteria and indicators of SFM is used to illustrate the utility of the proposed possibility schema in interdisciplinary forest decision-making. The schema can be used for ex-ante appraisal and ex-post evaluation of forest programs. It can also be used for integration of interdisciplinary forest knowledge, including ecological and socio-economic models of SFM. Abstract A growing body of critical social-scientific scholarship addresses the implications of marine spatial planning for those who depend on the ocean for their livelihood, sustenance, well-being and cultural survival. Of particular concern are planning initiatives that construct marine space in ways that negate or contradict its particular materiality, the latter holding great significance for how different actors relate to the ocean. In response, scholars are turning towards relational conceptualisations of marine space, focusing on the relationships between human and non-human actors, as well as the factors that mediate them. Here, we argue that legal geography, a strand of interdisciplinary research that explores how space, law and society are co-constituted, can make a valuable contribution to this discussion. In taking seriously the connections between the themes law as discourse, law as representation and law as power, legal geography offers a deeper understanding of the subjectivities, narratives and sources of normativity made in/visible by the legal dimensions of planning frameworks. Using the legal-geographical concept of spatial justice as our frame of reference, we posit that the relational materiality of the ocean lends itself to the socio-legal construction of marine spaces as ‘commons’, i.e. as pluralist spaces where different knowledges and ways of being coexist and intermingle, and where well-being is perceived in composite, socio-natural terms. This allows us to problematise marine spatial planning, along with its normative, regulatory and institutional underpinnings, as a vehicle for the enclosure of not only marine spaces but also spaces of decision-making.

A Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) provides support for decision makers and should not be viewed as replacing human intelligence with machines. Therefore it is reasonable that decision makers are able to use a feature to analyze the provided spatial decision support in detail to crosscheck the digital support of the SDSS with their own expertise. Spatial decision support is based on risk and resource maps in a Geographic Information System (GIS) with relevant layers e.g. environmental, health and socio-economic data. Spatial fuzzy logic allows the representation of spatial properties with a value of truth in the range between 0 and 1. Decision makers can refer to the visualization of the spatial truth of single risk variables of a disease. Spatial fuzzy logic rules that support the allocation of limited resources according to risk can be evaluated with measure theory on topological spaces, which allows to visualize the applicability of this rules as well in a map. Our paper is based on the concept of a spatial fuzzy logic on topological spaces that contributes to the development of an adaptive Early Warning And Response System (EWARS) providing decision support for the current or future spatial distribution of a disease. It supports the decision maker in testing interventions based on available resources and apply risk mitigation strategies and provide guidance tailored to the geo-location of the user via mobile devices. The software component of the system would be based on open source software and the software developed during this project will also be in the open source domain, so that an open community can build on the results and tailor further work to regional or international requirements and constraints. A freely available <i>EWARS Spatial Fuzzy Logic Demo</i> was developed wich enables a user to visualize risk and resource maps based on individual data in several data formats.

Streszczenie:
Architectural drawings, which are projections of spaces on a paper surface, can be categorized according to the projections’ directional and temporal relation with the represented space. A projection becomes a documentation when it departs from an existing spatial organization for recording it on paper. The projection serves the design process when it departs from the present to foresee a spatial proposal in the future. While the former records the present within limited interpretive range, the latter is more constructive. While these two types of projections are known widely, there is another highly interpretive type of projection, the potentials of which, are generally underestimated. As the architectural historian’s tool, this third projection type represents bygone architecture. The task of this drawing, which is one of the least questioned issues of architectural history, is to restore an incomplete image by referring to material and textual sources. This drawing type contributes to the methodology of architectural historiography while conceiving, explaining and representing space. For illustrating this situation, this study analyzes the vernacular settlements and their environmental integration because this selected context reveals the interpretive nature of the third type of projection in a successful way. In this framework, the cut-away axonometric is considered as an appropriate drawing method for uncovering the integrity between architecture and its site or culture and nature. The outcome of this theoretical insight into the prolific relations between drawing and architectural history is coined as “environmental representation.”In history architectural products have been integral components of the environment. Then, the architectural representation of historical buildings through drawings becomes critical since the majority of architectural drawings tend to isolate buildings from their environment. This conventional representation of historical architecture has been the dominant tool of typological analysis. Typology, which is intertwined with plan drawings, categorizes historical buildings according to their spatial, structural and material organizations and disengages the buildings from their socio-cultural and environmental context. If this methodological problem of typology is regarded as a problem of drawing, a new mode of “environmental representation” can be proposed. This study proposes “environmental representation” of architecture through cut-away axonometric. This graphic proposal is based upon the theoretical references of “environmental aesthetics”, which is an interdisciplinary field analyzing the participatory human engagement in environment. “Aesthetics,” as a term, defines this bodily engagement into environment through the use of all human senses. In this theoretical framework this study challenges the assumptions of scientific theory for architectural representation of the “abstracted object” and proposes an alternative method of “environmental representation” on the basis of “aesthetics”. Within this scope, the proposed cut-away axonometric drawings produced by the author is analyzed in order to represent exemplary historical contexts of architecture selected through the vernacular settlements of the Anatolian Mediterranean.

Dengue fever is an acute mosquito-borne disease that mostly spreads within urban or semi-urban areas in warm climate zones. The dengue-related risk map is one of the most practical tools for executing effective control policies, breaking the transmission chain, and preventing disease outbreaks. Mapping risk at a small scale, such as at an urban level, can demonstrate the spatial heterogeneities in complicated built environments. This review aims to summarize state-of-the-art modeling methods and influential factors in mapping dengue fever risk in urban settings. Data were manually extracted from five major academic search databases following a set of querying and selection criteria, and a total of 28 studies were analyzed. Twenty of the selected papers investigated the spatial pattern of dengue risk by epidemic data, whereas the remaining eight papers developed an entomological risk map as a proxy for potential dengue burden in cities or agglomerated urban regions. The key findings included: (1) Big data sources and emerging data-mining techniques are innovatively employed for detecting hot spots of dengue-related burden in the urban context; (2) Bayesian approaches and machine learning algorithms have become more popular as spatial modeling tools for predicting the distribution of dengue incidence and mosquito presence; (3) Climatic and built environmental variables are the most common factors in making predictions, though the effects of these factors vary with the mosquito species; (4) Socio-economic data may be a better representation of the huge heterogeneity of risk or vulnerability spatial distribution on an urban scale. In conclusion, for spatially assessing dengue-related risk in an urban context, data availability and the purpose for mapping determine the analytical approaches and modeling methods used. To enhance the reliabilities of predictive models, sufficient data about dengue serotyping, socio-economic status, and spatial connectivity may be more important for mapping dengue-related risk in urban settings for future studies.

The article is devoted to the analysis of literary works of Russian Germans of the Omsk region. The relevance of the research is due to the need to preserve the history, culture and language of individual ethnic groups in the context of globalization. The purpose of the article is to define and describe the elements of ethnocultural identity in transnational literary texts of Russian Germans. The work was carried out within the framework of an interdisciplinary approach using the methods of discursive, contextual and semantic analysis, elements of linguistic and cultural description. The research material is the works of authors – Russian Germans, whose life is connected with the Omsk region. The authors of the article come to the conclusion that the specificity of these texts allows them to be attributed to transnational literature, since in most cases these works are autobiographical and dedicated to the search for identity. At the same time, the ethnocultural identity of Russian Germans living on the same territory includes national and regional components. As a result of the analysis of literary works, the authors have identified the following enlarged thematic groups that characterize the life of Russian Germans in the Omsk region: spatial, social, linguistic, cultural. Elements of both regional and ethnic identity of the Russian Germans of the Omsk region were identified in each thematic group. It is established that regional identity prevails in the spatial and socio-household components, and ethnic identity prevails in the linguistic and cultural components. The authors of the article show that ethno-cultural identity is objectified to a greater extent at the level of the identified thematic groups, to a lesser extent at the level of the use of stylistic means. The study revealed that colloquial mixed bilingual vocabulary prevails in terms of language as a means of humor and satire, as well as expressive and evaluative epithets.

Douce France is a 1995 banlieue film that touches on issues of interracial friendship, exclusion versus integration, gender identity and the relationship that the second generation of immigrants have with France as their homeland. The work, written and directed by Malik Chibane, focuses on a Blanc-Beur friendship, Moussa (Hakim Sarahoui) and his friend Jean-Luc (Frédéric Diefenthal). The film also focuses heavily on French-Algerian sisters Souad (Seloua Hamse) and Farida (Fadila Belkebla) and the character of Myssad (Nadia Kaci). In this review article, the film is examined and discussed regarding integration into a socio-spatial environment presented as significantly different from other banlieue films. Of particular interest are the difficulties, contradictions and dynamics of social integration, all of which are evident in the evolution of the relationships of the four main characters. These differences are present between them, with their families, but also with the whole social fabric. In addition, this article outlines the historical context of La marche des beurs in 1983 in Marseille and its perception by the public. It then attempts to explore the issues of integration, territory and the relationship between father and children.

Photography narrates places through space and time. It is a storytelling method and format that not only reflects the landscapes viewed, but can also act as a catalyst for reflection and critical engagement with hidden mobilities that are in plain sight. In this article I illustrate the ways in which photography offers a unique opportunity to humanize and critique economic crises and unequal experiences of urban landscapes. Drawing on research in mobility studies, media studies, and cultural geography, this study interweaves interdisciplinary approaches to representation and urbanization to highlight the importance of visual narratives in how we negotiate and manage city life. Examining the work of Stephen McLaren, specifically through his photographic series, The Crash: London’s Finance Disaster 2008, this article analyzes the ways in which photography brings into relief both public and private relationships with place and finance. By directly examining the use of photography, singular narratives of economic and social mobility are called into question, while an important entryway is opened into a more nuanced use of critical visual analysis to understand shifting mobilities, and economic and emotional geographies. Visual media analysis offers an opportunity to move beyond representations of crises, and their related built environments, as exceptional and distinct, highlighting instead an often hidden series of related contradictory socio-spatial mobilities.

The objective of this article is to discuss the main studies related to urban heat in the city of Recife, the capital of the state of Pernambuco in Brazil, and contribute to providing theoretical and methodological perspectives for future research and the understanding of the history of these studies. Recife is the core of the largest metropolitan region in the northeastern region of Brazil, characterized by a complex urban landscape marked by inequalities and socio-spatial challenges. Moreover, it is recognized as one of the most vulnerable cities to climate change in the world. Analyzing urban heat in Recife through a descriptive review has the potential to provide a comprehensive analysis of the interactions between physical, social, and environmental elements with urban heat in this city, as well as to identify shortcomings and trends in ongoing initiatives and future perspectives. The discussions encompass the following themes: (a) urban heat scales, ranging from macro to global, in both temporal and spatial aspects; (b) the regional and local contexts of urban growth in Recife; (c) the challenges in urban heat studies in the city, including difficulties in data acquisition and integration of approaches; and (d) current efforts and future perspectives in addressing urban heat in this city. The main challenges for future heat studies include developing means for applicability in urban planning, enhancing observations of the interaction with the urban landscape, overcoming the lack of data sources, and understanding the interaction between scales to develop approaches that integrate the social and physical dimensions of urban climate and its relationship with climate change. Such reflections can also be extended to other geographic areas that share similar patterns of urban growth and socio-spatial complexities, helping to enhance the representation of the Global South in this field.

The article is dedicated to the evaluation of the centre and periphery effects in the socio-economic development of the region. Goal. The purpose is to assess the core and peripheral effects of the impact on socio-economic development of the region. Method (methodology). Methods of logical generalization, analysis, comparison and synthesis, integrated assessment, spatial autocorrelation are used to assess of the levels of core-periphery relations in the region. Results. The core-periphery relations are a multilevel hierarchy with a representation of economic, social and spatial aspects. The core-periphery relation in the region is an evidence of a complex system of subordination where the core area causes most of the effects and directs the development. At the same time, different core areas of development may arise and influence on the periphery territory by absorbing its resources in the process of development of core-periphery relations. A methodical approach for evaluation of the core-periphery relations has been suggested. The methodical approach comprises: the identification of core-periphery relation in the region under the influence of the centre: the distinction of economic “growth points” and areas of their impact on the region (inner periphery and outer periphery); the assessment of the intensity of the centre or “growth points” impacts on the region. The analysis revealed a core and “growth points”, identified periphery areas in Lviv region, measured the influence of the cities of regional significance. The core-periphery relations in the region can be identified as multilevel hierarchy with economic, social and spatial aspects. Analyzing the core-periphery relations from this point of view we have distinguished features and types of such relations between territorial communities (core, “growth point”, and periphery). We have identified some areas with low levels of integration into the regional economic space and low level of social development. For such territorial communities, a differentiated approach should be implemented in order to boost economic growth along with the level of social development. Moreover, we have determined the spread of positive effects from the cities of regional significance to the socio-economic development of the region, as well as identified areas beyond their influence.

AbstractThis article presents a close reading (or listening) of Amadou & Mariam's 2004 album, Dimanche à Bamako, meaning ‘Sunday in Bamako’, produced ‘by and with’ world music maverick Manu Chao. I consider how Dimanche à Bamako musically renders, through sound and lyrical expression, the tensions of ‘global modernity’ in postcolonial Africa and its diaspora. ‘Global modernity’ refers to the fraught encounter between local actors and the globalised socio-economic conditions in which modern subjects are increasingly embedded. By framing these local and global tensions in the context of a modern African city, Dimanche à Bamako offers a theoretically sophisticated representation of urban African social space that, while rooted in a particular place (Bamako, Mali) attends to the wider world in which a local sense of place gives way to the wanderlust and anxieties of living and labouring in a globalised world. Through critical application of Lefebvrian and Mande socio-spatial theory and focused analysis of several of the album's tracks, I argue that Dimanche à Bamako elucidates a dialectic of ‘civility’ and ‘wildness’ that shapes the way social space and subjectivity are conceived, lived, and perceived in urban African communities in an era of global modernity.

Part of the preparatory work for writing a generalizing history of the Kabardin-Balkaria is summing up the results of a scientific study of its key problems, which include the interpretation of the traditional system of socio-political or inter-social interactions in the Central Caucasus. In the previous publication, the formation of the historiographical tradition in the 18th – early 20th centuries was considered. The proposed article aims to continue the study of this topic using the material of Soviet and post-Soviet historiography. The material considered in the article shows that the construction of a generalized concept of the traditional system of inter-social interactions in the Central Caucasus is a complex problem that touches upon the fundamental issues of the study of regional history. The first of them is the question of the applicability of categories developed in other social sciences or on historical material from other eras and regions to the North Caucasian reality of the 16th – 18th centuries. In this case, individual elements and relationships are identified with the structure of the system as a whole. Inter-social interactions that unfold both in space and in time receive a static, exclusively spatial representation. The second question is related to the need to differentiate ethnic and socio-political nomenclature in the representation of the Central Caucasus as a space of inter-social interactions. Contemporary historiography explicitly or implicitly places the social interactions of the owners and societies of the region in an “interethnic” and / or “ethnopolitical” context. Historical concepts to a certain extent are divorced from the sources of data of the 16th – 18th centuries, in which ethnic communities – "peoples" are never the subjects of inter-social interactions. A generalized interpretation of the historical experience of inter-social interactions in the Central Caucasus is possible on the basis of combining a “narrative”, descriptive approach with a “supra-ethnic” representation of the region as a space with a complex natural and social landscape. The most stable general function of the traditional system of inter-social interactions is the maintenance of order that is understandable to all their participants and ensured the reproduction of each ethno-social unit that occupies its own natural-ecological niche.

Abstract The problem of monitoring and management of industrial and natural complexes in the Arctic is an important problem, without solving which the effective development of the Arctic zones of the Russian Federation is impossible. Specialized information systems are actively used to support decision-making on planning and managing various types of activities in the Arctic, as well as the socio-economic development of the Arctic territories of the Russian Federation. Spatial information visualization tools are an important part of such systems. Visual representation of data is one of the most convenient types of information representation for human processing. This paper describes a method of automated geoimage generation for decision support systems based on the analysis of natural language texts. The use of such geoimages reduces the complexity of decision making for the management tasks of spatially distributed bio-socio-economic systems of the region. The paper describes the formulation of the research problem, review of geocoding tools and services, the original technology of automated geoimages (digital maps) generation based on the use of cloud geoservices. Particular attention is paid to the problem of recognition of named entities in natural language text. The recognition results are used as input data for geocoding and geovisualization process. As a result of the method, the text is converted into a geoimage (map) which can be used to support decision-making by a decision maker. In the final part of the paper, plans for further work are described to develop the capabilities of the automated geoimage generation method for decision support systems based on the analysis of natural language texts.

Abstract. In semi-arid regions, the annual floods of alluvial plains, wetlands and lakes provide essential services to millions of farmers, livestock holders and fishers. The scale, number and dispersion of these water bodies limit however their hydrological understanding, whose complexity is exacerbated by the mutual interactions between water and society. Rising availability of high spatial and temporal resolution remote sensing imagery provide novel opportunities to improve the understanding of the hydrology of multiple water bodies and of their ability to support local livelihoods. Multi-scalar interdisciplinary research combining remote sensing, in situ observations, hydrological modelling and farmer interviews was developed to investigate multiple socio-hydrosystems in the Senegal floodplain. Surface water monitoring with MNDWI on multi-spectral imagery (Landsat 5, 7, 8 and Sentinel-2A) is used to identify intra-annual and inter-annual variations in water availability. Validation against field monitoring (R2=0.88) and photointerpretation of drone imagery highlights the benefits of Sentinel's increased resolution to monitor floods of minor surface area and duration and improve the representation of hysteresis in floodplains. Integrated into forthcoming river basin modelling, these results can help simulate the influence of upstream changes on the hydrology and associated services of these complex socio-hydrosystems and improve watershed management.

This article explores how the socio-spatial relationship between cities and nature is changing under the cultural conditions of the twenty-first century. I argue that contemporary urban parks such as New York’s High Line, along with less cultivated sites of city-nature intersections such as vacant lots, represent variations of an emergent type of social space, which I term imbricated spaces. Imbricated spaces present “city” and “nature” as active agents in their creation through the decay of the built environment and the growth of the natural environment. The transformation of city-nature imbrications into culturally valued spaces, whether through architectural intervention, artistic representation, or phenomenological experience, reflects that such spaces not only have wide resonance but that their growing presence on the urban landscape is correlated with a broader recognition of how nonhuman agency—in particular, climate change and industrial decay—is shaping the social spaces of contemporary cities.

This article examines the Russian diaspora in New Zealand over the last 30 years. Using migration statistics and census data, post-communist migration trends and socio-economic outcomes of immigration from Russia to New Zealand are analyzed, to establish an empirical base for further qualitative and comparative investigation of the settlement experiences of Russian immigrants in New Zealand. Results reveal that the Russian diaspora has been growing, demonstrating spatial clustering in urban centers with the highest concentration in Auckland. While Russian immigrants have a high level of educational qualifications, their labor market outcomes have been weak and their income is lagging behind that of the New Zealand-born population and of migrants born in other countries. An over-representation of working-age female migrants is a distinctive feature of the Russian diaspora. Further research on the changing migration pathways and settlement strategies of the Russian immigrants in New Zealand is suggested.

Purpose This essay looks at how various forms of residential tourism or lifestyle migration, produced by people arriving from the cities and territories of the so-called Global North, have triggered complex processes of social-spatial modification in the landscapes and rural environments of Vilcabamba, Ecuador, a small Andean village of approximately 5,000 inhabitants in the southern part of the canton of Loja. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach Residential tourism in rural areas is a phenomenon that can be investigated by combining socio-economic studies with spatial analyses to define the specific characteristics of territories and environments affected by this phenomenon. In the case of Vilcabamba, the relationships and conflicts between imaginations, spaces, ecologies and desires have taken the form of a complex “implicit project”, a “palimpsest-project” intended as a set of territorial descriptions, interpretations and transformation actions triggered by a plot featuring migrant tourists, activists, eco-institutions, schools, artisans, intellectuals and artists. Though weakly connected to one another, these subjects nonetheless produce substantially coherent actions. Findings Two main hypotheses are given as: the first is that in particular rural contexts, such as the Andean area around Vilcabamba, dwelling practices and economies related to residential tourism have triggered processes through which these areas have progressively become peripheries to distant metropolitan territories and are reconfigured as sets of specialised places. The second hypothesis is that Vilcabamba and its rural surroundings can be viewed as a particular “contact zone” in which different types of residential tourists and local dwellers interact, together with different economies of tourism. In this case the reference is, on the one hand, to the logics and discourses of the so-called extractive tourism, a concept that describes the processes of “extracting” and converting local cultural characteristics, and “indigenousness”. To support these hypotheses, the result is the construction of a spatial representation of the ways in which specific practices of residential tourism are territorialised, and how they modify the meaning and functioning of rural spaces. Originality/value What is new in the paper is the attempt to define a spatial representation of transnational spaces trying to highlight relationships between extractive tourism and remittance urbanism.
