Background: Geological formation's variability is responsible for spatial distribution and volume of groundwater stored in the aquifer. Groundwater availability is also determined by topography, geology, and climate, accountable for numerous natural surface indicators and groundwater availability. Objective: This paper evaluates the empirical relations between geology and sporadic groundwater levels over three geographical locations in the Sokoto basin by assessing the variability of static water level, pumping test, pumping water level and estimated yields from boreholes. Scarcity of water within and around Northern Nigeria is no longer a wieldy issue. There is an over reliance on groundwater, and this has led to an increase in the number of bore-holes drilled in order to augment the water needs within the study area. Unfortunately the failure of many installed bore-holes has been rampant in this area. This is due to absence of or improper groundwater investigation and interpretation of site suitability. In this work, an attempt was made to estimate the depth to magnetic source and by inference, the thickness of sediments within parts of the Sokoto Basin, Northwestern Nigeria. Aeromagnetic data of Tambuwal (Sheet 50) was acquired, processed and interpreted. The regional field was separated from the total magnetic intensity (TMI) and the magnetic anomaly was obtained. The anomaly map was upward continued and divided into overlapping square grids of 27.5 km x 27.5 km. Spectral depth analysis was then carried out on each grid to infer areas of probable hydrocarbon prospects. The result of the spe

The study investigated the effects of rainfall and temperature variability on crop water requirements of selected food crops in the Sokoto-Rima River Basin, Northwest of Nigeria. Rainfall and temperature datasets were obtained from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) TS 3.21 of the University of East Anglia, Norwich, for a period of 70 years (1943-2012). The suitability of CRU datasets were verified by correlating the datasets with measured rainfall data of Yelwa synoptic station, from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency. Selected food crops were used for estimating supplementary irrigation water

Mining activities in the Iullumeden (Sokoto) basin is often heard of due to its prominence in artisanal mode of ransacking the Earth in search of minerals and metal of high economic values. The unabated demand in the growing post-industrial era have decimated any health impact that could be borne by the inhabitants of the mining communities. Dange-Shuni is an enclave of this basin that was covered in a bid to determine the gross alpha and beta radioactivity in domestic water in and around mining points. Water samples were collected and analyzed via Hidex 300 SL system of Liquid Scintillation C

Aim of the Study: The study's objectives were to establish the depth of the magnetic basement, identify the linear characteristics connected to the basin, and extrapolate the impact of the structure on the region's overall tectonic history. Methodology: The basin spans latitude 11o00I to 13o30IN and longitude 4o30I to 6o30IE. It is situated at the eastern part of Iullemeden basin. Results of the study revealed total magnetic intensity (TMI) range of -1503.47nT to 1224.93nT with average of -139.27nT. Residual magnetic field anomaly result showed a range between 770.25nT to 1385 95nT. Tilt deriv

The surface water of Nigeria is argued to be under threat in most parts of the country, especially in the rural environment where it is a main life support system. The level of surface water recession within the Sokoto-Rima River Basin in the northwest Sudano-Sahelian environment of Nigeria is assessed in the study. Interactive remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques are used to map and analyze the hydrology of the basin over a 40-year period (1965 to 2005). The results show alarming reductions in the floodplain area, as well as the lengths, orders, and densities of t
