A regional marine reservoir correction (ΔR) of 33±24 14C yr for southern Brazil was obtained from 6 marine shell samples collected in the states of Santa Catarina and Paraná. This work also presents a ΔR estimation of 8±17 14C yr for the southern and southeastern Brazilian coast from the states of Rio de Janeiro to Santa Catarina, obtained by including 7 ages published in previous works. The high variability of R in modern and Holocene samples from the Brazilian coast is also discussed.

Meanwhile the highest relative sea-level is the present one in southeastern United States (Gulf of Mexico) or in Netherlands coast, most of the Brazilian coast exhibited Holocene sea-levels higher than the present in the past. The Brazilian curves, representing the relative sea-level changes during last 7.000 years, are outlined using sedimentological, biological and prehistorical past sea-level records. This paper shows that these relative sea-level records, during the Holocene, can be suitably used to demonstrate the influence of the worldwide known paleoclimatic events, like the “Hypsitherm

Shellmounds are archaeological sites found across the Brazilian coast and form an important record of the human occupation of this area during the Holocene. The presence of both terrestrial and marine remains within the same archaeological context enables the comparison of different carbon reservoirs. There is only a small number of similar studies for the coast of south-southeastern Brazil. Previous work was based on the analysis of pre-bomb shells from museum collections and paired charcoal/marine shells from archaeological sites. This article assesses the potential use of terrestrial shells

The ctenophore fauna of Brazilian coast is poorly known. Only one planktonic species, Mnemiopsis leidyi, was previously recorded for the southeastern coast. The present study describes and gives some biological notes of this and four other species (Beroe ovata, Bolinopsis vitrea, Leucothea multicornis, and Ocyropsis crystallina) that occur in the area, two of which (B. vitrea and L. multicornis) are new records for the subtropical southwestern Atlantic.

We report the first record of Sterna dougallii Montagu, 1813 on the southeastern Brazilian coast. During monthly bird surveys in the northern Rio de Janeiro State, on January 2012 we recovered a tern banded in Massachusetts, USA. The present record stretches the S. dougallii southernmost geographic distribution in Brazil (Bahia state) by about 600 km. It is difficult to evaluate this species' regional status due to the absence of continuous sampling efforts.

Relative sea-level curves have been delineated for several sectors of the Brazilian coast. In order to have homogeneous and consistent curves, very short segments of the coastline with the same framework are considered. To minimize systematic errors tied to the particular nature of an indicator, we use the maximum number of different indicators available from former positions of relative sea level. These sea-level curves show that, during the last 7000 years, the central Brazilian coast has been subjected to a submergence phase which lasted until 5100 14C yr BP (5600 cal yr BP), followed by a

It once carpeted the chain of mountains running along the eastern coast of Brazil from the states of Rio Grande do Soul to Rio Grande do Norte, an area of roughly one million square kilometers. Agriculture and logging have reduced this unique ecosystem to less than 5% of its original extent. Now all that is left are fragments of a once magnificent forest that early explorers described as a livin

Abstract This paper introduces a pipeline that, first, assembles a dataset of metocean conditions consisting of wind, wave and surface currents, and, second, clusters this data to find the characteristic environmental conditions of each region in the Brazilian coast and the associated Exclusive Economic Zone. Clustering uses the Partitioning Around Medoids algorithm with the silhouette coefficient. As examples, we first present an analysis for the whole Exclusive Economic Zone and then a focused analysis around the Santos port in Southeastern Brazil.
