Radiation heat and convection heat exist on stratified air conditioning zone building surfaces in large space, and they have significant impact on cooling load calculation and thermal comfort analysis. Actually, heat transfer in large space is usually under non-steady condition. Based on an actual large space, a 1:4 scale model experiment rig is built as research object, which has: typical sloping ceiling structure, columnar low supply air, middle return air, inner surfaces periodic heat flow simulation system, heat measurement, and control system. For stratified air conditioning zone building surfaces in large space, radiation heat transfer calculation model is presented based on Gebhart radiation model and radiation heat is calculated by matrix calculation. Convection heat transfer calculation formula is presented based on inner surfaces temperatures and indoor air temperatures. Taking two periodic heat flow experiment conditions, building surfaces temperatures and indoor air temperatures of stratified air conditioning zone in large space were collected, taking model calculation program to compute dynamic radiation heat and convection heat. The result indicated the dynamic characteristics of radiation heat and convection heat of stratified air conditioning zone building surfaces in large space. It provided some important information for dynamic heat transfer research in stratified air conditioning zone building surfaces in large space.

Under the influence of the liturgical reform promoted in the 20th century, Catholic temples assumed very simple characteristics, especially after the determinations of the Second Vatican Council. This simplification can be observed both in the construction of new temples and in the adaptation of others built before the period in question, causing the loss of its identity. In order to understand the simplification of these sacred spaces, we chose the case study: the renovation of Santa Maria de Campos dos Goytacazes Parish Church, located in the North of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In the architectural intervention of this sacred space, conditioning factors were identified as: impositions of the local community; priests who are unaware of ecclesiastical determinations for liturgical space; and the scarcity of architects familiar with liturgical practices and conciliar guidelines. It is necessary to consider new proposals for the use of space, particularly in the rehabilitation of sacred spaces after the Second Vatican Council.

Computational studies of two- and three-dimensional, turbulent recirculating flows within mechanically-ventilated enclosures are reported. Two principal cases are examined: (i) two-dimensional offset jets: and (ii) three-dimensional flow induced in rooms by supply jets emanating from low or high side-wall registers. The calculations were undertaken using iterative finite-domain proceedures which solve the conservation equations for mass, momentum and enthalpy, together with additional transport equations for the turbulent kinetic energy and its dissipation rate . The effect of buoyancy waS. explicitly accounted for when modelling these equations, in order that they could be employed to simulate buoyant flow in ventilated rooms. Computations of the mean velocity, temperature and convective heat transfer distribution are reported, and compared with experimental data where available. A modified version of the two-dimensional elliptic code of Pun and Spalding (1977) was employed to simulate the offset jet case. These involve the discharge of a turbulent jet parallel to a flat surface and eventually attaching to it. The investigations covered a wide range of offset ratio (3.5-32.4). and the computed flow properties are compared with measurements from several sources. These comparisons show good agreement downstream of the reattachment point, while some discrepancies are evident upstream from this location. The differences therefore occur mainly in the recirculating flow region, and are believed to arise from shortcoming in the starting profiles, the turbulance model and the treatment of the near-wall flow. A three-dimensional elliptic finite-domain code was developed to simulate the complex, jet-induced flow within rectangular enclosures. The code was verified using both laminar and turbulent flow test cases on simpler geometries. Comparisons with the measurements and predictions reported by previous researchers were employed for this purpose. Subsequentlyr the ventilated room simulations were undertaken using three different ventilation arrangements with thermal conditions corresponding to isothermall non-buoyant (constant property) and buoyancy"affected flows. The computations were again compared with experimental and numerical predictions of previous researchers. This comparison displayed generally good agreement with these sources. A study of the flow and convective heat exchange within a warm-air heated rom, for which buoyancy effects are significant# is also reported in a bound paper (Alamdari, Hammonda nd Mohammad, 1986) for three different heat loads. Its aim to assess the balance between accuracy and economy provided by the present higher-level method compared with the intermediate-level convection model of Alamdari and Hammond (1982) when used to supply building thermal simulation programs with accurate convection heat transfer data. The computed results of both models were compared, and indicate that the intermediate-level is a valuable alternative source that can satisfy the needs of building thermal modellers. It provides resonable accuracy at a very modest cost in computing terms.

D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, 2012.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 138-144).<br>Occupancy-moderated zonal space-conditioning (OZS) refers to the partitioning of a residence into different zones and independently operating the space-conditioning equipment of each zone based on its occupancy. OZS remains largely unexplored in spite of its potential to reduce the cost of space-conditioning. Despite the excitement surrounding cloud-connected devices like mobile phones and tablet computers, the benefit of using them to aid energy management agents (EMAs) in reducing space-conditioning cost under demand-driven pricing of electricity is not well understood. We develop a novel framework and the algorithms to enable an EMA to implement OZS for multiple inhabitants under a demand-driven pricing scheme for electricity. We further investigate the effects that influencing factors can have on the effectiveness of OZS under different scenarios using Monte Carlo simulations. The simulation results demonstrate that OZS is realizable on a simple home computer and can achieve significant space-conditioning cost reductions in practice. In our studies, both the financial operating cost of space-conditioning and the cost associated with discomfort are included in a single aggregate cost function. We then expand the simulations to study the cost reduction that is achievable when using cloud-connected devices to provide remote schedule updates to an EMA. This part of the study reveals that reduction in space-conditioning cost is appreciable if a working resident remotely updates an EMA at mid-day of his return time in the evening. In addition, we establish a directly proportional relationship between the level of space-conditioning cost reduction achievable and the variance of return time. A model to predict air temperatures inside a residential home was created, which used local and remote environmental sensor data. Space conditioning experiments were carried out in the residential home and models were created to describe the observed temperature data. Results from laboratory space conditioning experiments were used to create a new experimental prediction model. Static inputs of the experimental model were replaced with dynamic inputs and an improved model was created, capable of general prediction application in the residential home. A novel system for space conditioning control was designed, which applied the improved model for air temperature prediction. Initial prediction models showed prediction error margins of ±1°C. Residential home and laboratory space conditioning experiments were utilized to create non-linear temperature prediction models capable of application outside of the experimental scope. Improved prediction models were based on the experimental models and showed average error margins of ±0:12°C compared to observed temperature data. A novel system design was proposed, combining the improved model with a traditional heating control to create a new optimal start-stop heating application for residential homes.

Building information modeling (BIM) shows its potential in the performance driven design, where multiple design solutions are generated and selected against certain design goals. This paper proposes a workflow to generate and simulate multiple thermal zoning schemes toward a semi-automatic design process of air-conditioning (AC) system. Thermal zoning plays a pivotal role in the design thinking of engineers by synthesizing load calculation, equipment sizing, and pipe/duct layout. However, it is often done intuitively with influence on performance unknown at the initial stage. To make it quantitative, we decompose the zoning process into three levels (thermal/control/system) of space aggregation, joining both semantic and numeric characteristics. For the semantic part, space functions are considered by space labeling, accessibility, and adjacency. As to the numeric part, spaces are zoned based on their thermal response similarities, revealed by dynamic mode decomposition on simulated free-float temperature. Then, the system zoning is generated by rolling out convenient distribution network layouts, representing typical fan-coil or variable-air-volume systems. Variables at each level contribute to the "generative" zoning. Based on multiple zoning schemes, the configurations are serialized into EnergyPlus and Modelica inputs for co-simulation. Initial cost, energy consumption, and comfort level of conditioning join together for the zoning evaluation. The entire workflow is implemented in Grasshopper with self-developed plugins

AbstractPrior to haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT), conditioning therapy is used for disease eradication, creation of space for engraftment and immunosuppression. Conditioning therapy includes combinations of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and/or immunotherapy and can be administered in the immediate days leading up to, and sometimes the days immediately following, the cell infusion. Total body irradiation (TBI) is generally used as part of conditioning regimens preceding allogeneic HSCT and is able to target sanctuary sites where some drugs cannot reach. Cancer immunotherapy treatment harnesses the body’s natural defences to fight the cancer, by involving components of the immune system. Conditioning therapy can have acute and chronic side effects which vary depending on the intensity of the treatement. Nursing implications include patient education and information, toxicity assessments, close monitoring and protocolised, evidence-based action plans. Stem cell infusion is usually a safe procedure but can cause adverse reactions ranging from flushing and nausea to life-threatening anaphylaxis. There should be written policies for the administration of cellular therapy products, and nurses must have comleted training and achieved competency in order to safely administer haematopoietic stem cells.

AbstractA central problem in biology is to understand how organisms evolve and adapt to their environment by acquiring variations in the observable characteristics or traits of species across the tree of life. With the growing availability of large-scale image repositories in biology and recent advances in generative modeling, there is an opportunity to accelerate the discovery of evolutionary traits automatically from images. Toward this goal, we introduce Phylo-Diffusion, a novel framework for conditioning diffusion models with phylogenetic knowledge represented in the form of HIERarchical Embeddings (HIER-Embeds). We also propose two new experiments for perturbing the embedding space of Phylo-Diffusion: trait masking and trait swapping, inspired by counterpart experiments of gene knockout and gene editing/swapping. Our work represents a novel methodological advance in generative modeling to structure the embedding space of diffusion models using tree-based knowledge. Our work also opens a new chapter of research in evolutionary biology by using generative models to visualize evolutionary changes directly from images. We empirically demonstrate the usefulness of Phylo-Diffusion in capturing meaningful trait variations for fishes and birds, revealing novel insights about the biological mechanisms of their evolution. AbstractWith the increase in energy prices and the drive to reduce carbon emission, this paper presents an investigation of the use of smart office environments to monitor and evaluate the sustainability and behaviour of employees and the utilisation of space and resources. This paper presents analysis of data in an office environment in a company in Derby city to attempt to understand the behaviour of employees, pattern of work, power consumption and performance of heating and air-conditioning systems. Data from occupancy, room temperature, CO2, humidity, lighting, air temperature, windows status are all collected and analysed. The data also included external environmental conditions. The results indicate some correlation between CO2 levels and the number of employees. They also show correlation between outside and inside environmental conditions. In addition, the utilisation of space was also monitored, and the results demonstrate low utilisation during most days, this was due to Covid-19 and to working from home and off-site patterns. However, the data is found useful to inform future decisions about the actual space needed for normal working conditions.
