Streszczenie:
Abstract. Cellular automaton versions of the Burridge-Knopoff model have been shown to reproduce the power law distribution of event sizes; that is, the Gutenberg-Richter law. However, they have failed to reproduce the occurrence of foreshock and aftershock sequences correlated with large earthquakes. We show that in the case of partial stress recovery due to transient creep occurring subsequently to earthquakes in the crust, such spring-block systems self-organize into a statistically stationary state characterized by a power law distribution of fracture sizes as well as by foreshocks and aftershocks accompanying large events. In particular, the increase of foreshock and the decrease of aftershock activity can be described by, aside from a prefactor, the same Omori law. The exponent of the Omori law depends on the relaxation time and on the spatial scale of transient creep. Further investigations concerning the number of aftershocks, the temporal variation of aftershock magnitudes, and the waiting time distribution support the conclusion that this model, even "more realistic" physics in missed, captures in some ways the origin of the size distribution as well as spatio-temporal clustering of earthquakes.

Streszczenie:
Natural systems undergo several morphological changes with time. To study spatio-temporal dynamics of such natural systems, and to further understand the morphological dynamical behaviors, various images that show several macro- and micro-level phenomena, acquired by various types of sensors need to be analyzed in spatio-temporal scales. Such analyses, to facilitate the researcher to model the spatio-temporal organization of a desired phenomenon, evidently require the robust procedures to extract specific error-free features from multiscale-temporal images represented in discrete space. Geometry and topology based features, such as edges of unique type and general type, are the indicators to record the changes that occur temporally. Extraction of such information is essential prerequisite to develop cogent models to understand the spatio-temporal organization.

Streszczenie:
Spiking model neurons can be set up to respond selectively to specific spatio-temporal spike patterns by optimization of their input weights. It is unknown, however, if existing synaptic plasticity mechanisms can achieve this temporal mode of neuronal coding and computation. Here it is shown that changes of synaptic efficacies which tend to balance excitatory and inhibitory synaptic inputs can make neurons sensitive to particular input spike patterns. Simulations demonstrate that a combination of Hebbian mechanisms, hetero-synaptic plasticity and synaptic scaling is sufficient for self-organizing sensitivity for spatio-temporal spike patterns that repeat in the input. In networks inclusion of hetero-synaptic plasticity that depends on the pre-synaptic neurons leads to specialization and faithful representation of pattern sequences by a group of target neurons. Pattern detection is robust against a range of distortions and noise. The proposed combination of Hebbian mechanisms, hetero-synaptic plasticity and synaptic scaling is found to protect the memories for specific patterns from being overwritten by ongoing learning during extended periods when the patterns are not present. This suggests a novel explanation for the long term robustness of memory traces despite ongoing activity with substantial synaptic plasticity. Taken together, our results promote the plausibility of precise temporal coding in the brain.

Streszczenie:
Public security incidents have been increasingly challenging to address with their new features, including large-scale mobility, multi-stage dynamic evolution, spatio-temporal concurrency and uncertainty in the complex urban environment, which require spatio-temporal association analysis among multiple regional video data for global cognition. However, the existing video data organizational methods that view video as a property of the spatial object or position in space dissever the spatio-temporal relationship of scattered video shots captured from multiple video channels, limit the query functions on interactive retrieval between a camera and its video clips and hinder the comprehensive management of event-related scattered video shots. GeoVideo, which maps video frames onto a geographic space, is a new approach to represent the geographic world, promote security monitoring in a spatial perspective and provide a highly feasible solution to this problem. This paper analyzes the large-scale personnel mobility in public safety events and proposes a multi-level, event-related organization method with massive GeoVideo data by spatio-temporal trajectory. This paper designs a unified object identify(ID) structure to implicitly store the spatio-temporal relationship of scattered video clips and support the distributed storage management of massive cases. Finally, the validity and feasibility of this method are demonstrated through suspect tracking experiments.

Streszczenie:
Task-oriented scene data in big data and cloud environments of a smart city that must be time-critically processed are dynamic and associated with increasing complexities and heterogeneities. Existing hybrid tree-based external indexing methods are input/output (I/O)-intensive, query schema-fixed, and difficult when representing the complex relationships of real-time multi-modal scene data; specifically, queries are limited to a certain spatio-temporal range or a small number of selected attributes. This paper proposes a new spatio-temporal indexing method for task-oriented multi-modal scene data organization. First, a hybrid spatio-temporal index architecture is proposed based on the analysis of the characteristics of scene data and the driving forces behind the scene tasks. Second, a graph-based spatio-temporal relation indexing approach, named the spatio-temporal relation graph (STR-graph), is constructed for this architecture. The global graph-based index, internal and external operation mechanisms, and optimization strategy of the STR-graph index are introduced in detail. Finally, index efficiency comparison experiments are conducted, and the results show that the STR-graph performs excellently in index generation and can efficiently address the diverse requirements of different visualization tasks for data scheduling; specifically, the STR-graph is more efficient when addressing complex and uncertain spatio-temporal relation queries.

Streszczenie:
Abstract The spatio-temporal organization of chromatin in the eukaryotic cell nucleus is of vital importance for transcription, DNA replication and genome maintenance. Each of these activities is tightly regulated in both time and space. While we have a good understanding of chromatin organization in space, for example in fixed snapshots as a result of techniques like FISH and Hi-C, little is known about chromatin dynamics in living cells. The rapid development of flexible genomic loci imaging approaches can address fundamental questions on chromatin dynamics in a range of model organisms. Moreover, it is now possible to visualize not only single genomic loci but the whole genome simultaneously. These advances have opened many doors leading to insight into several nuclear processes including transcription and DNA repair. In this review, we discuss new chromatin imaging methods and how they have been applied to study transcription.

Streszczenie:
Data Warehouse (DW) is topic-oriented, integrated, static datasets which are used to support decision-making. Driven by the constraint of mass spatio-temporal data management and application, Spatio-Temporal Data Warehouse (STDW) was put forward, and many researchers scattered all over the world focused their energy on it.Although the research on STDW is going in depth , there are still many key difficulties to be solved, such as the design principle, system framework, spatio-temporal data model (STDM), spatio-temporal data process (STDP), spatial data mining (SDM) and etc. In this paper, the concept of STDW is discussed, and analyzes the organization model of spatio-temporal data. Based on the above, a framework of STDW is composed of data layer, management layer and application layer. The functions of STDW should include data analysis besides data process and data storage. When users apply certain kind of data services, STDW identifies the right data by metadata management system, then start data processing tool to form a data product which serves the data mining and OLAP. All varieties of distributed databases (DDBs) make up data sources of STDW, including Digital Elevation Model (DEM), Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG), Data Locator Group (DLG), Data Objects Management (DOM), Place Name and other databases in existence. The management layer implements heterogeneous data processing, metadata management and spatio-temporal data storage. The application layer provides data products service, multidimensional data cube, data mining tools and on-line analytical process.

Streszczenie:
Trajectory big data is suitable for distributed storage retrieval due to its fast update speed and huge data volume, but currently there are problems such as hot data writing, storage skew, high I/O overhead and slow retrieval speed. In order to solve the above problems, this paper proposes a trajectory big data model that incorporates data partitioning and spatio-temporal multi-perspective hierarchical organization. At the spatial level, the model partitions the trajectory data based on the Hilbert curve and combines the pre-partitioning mechanism to solve the problems of hot writing and storage skewing of the distributed database HBase; at the temporal level, the model takes days as the organizational unit, finely encodes them into a minute system and then fuses the data partitioning to build spatio-temporal hybrid encoding to hierarchically organize the trajectory data and solve the problems of efficient storage and retrieval of trajectory data. The experimental results show that the model can effectively improve the storage and retrieval speed of trajectory big data under different orders of magnitude, while ensuring relatively stable writing and query speed, which can provide an efficient data model for trajectory big data mining and analysis.

Streszczenie:
A guiding principle of biology is that biochemical reactions must be organized in space and time. One way this spatio-temporal organization is achieved is through liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS), which generates biomolecular condensates. These condensates are dynamic and reactive, and often contain a complex mixture of proteins and nucleic acids. In this review, we discuss how underlying physical and chemical processes generate internal condensate architectures. We then outline the diverse condensate architectures that are observed in biological systems. Finally, we discuss how specific condensate organization is critical for specific biological functions.

Using one-dimensional models of myocardial tissue, implemented as chains of virtual ventricular muscle segments that are kinematically connected in series, we studied the role of the excitation sequence in spatio-temporal organization of cardiac function. Each model element was represented by a well-verified mathematical model of cardiac electro-mechanical activity. We found that homogeneous chains, consisting of identical elements, respond to non-simultaneous stimulation by generation of complex spatio-temporal heterogeneities in element deformation. These are accompanied by the establishment of marked gradients in local electro-mechanical properties of the elements (heterogeneity in action potential duration, Ca 2+ transient characteristics and sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca 2+ loading). In heterogeneous chains, composed of elements simulating fast and slow contracting cardiomyocytes from different transmural layers, we found that only activation sequences where stimulation of the slower elements preceded that of faster ones gave rise to optimization of the system's electro-mechanical function, which was confirmed experimentally. Based on the results obtained, we hypothesize that the sequence of activation of cardiomyocytes in different ventricular layers is one of the key factors of spatio-temporal organization of myocardium. Moreover, activation sequence and regional differences in intrinsic electro-mechanical properties of cardiac muscle must be matched in order to optimize myocardial function.

The article substantiates the methodology of multidimensional structuring of the agro-food complex (AFC), based on the basic principles of a systematic approach. The agro-food complex is considered as a complex, dynamic and multi-level socio-ecological and economic system of interconnected elements and diverse ordered links between them. The author made an attempt to get a holistic view of the structural organization of the agro-food complex using three system projections: spatio-temporal type of the system, functional-structural term, stage of the reproduction cycle. For this, an analysis of the structural organization and functioning of the agro-food complex (functional-sectoral, product, organizational, social structures) was carried out. The substantiation of the set of direct and feedback links between the elements of the agro-food system is given. Using the typology of socio-economic systems proposed by G.B. Kleiner, spatio-temporal characteristics of the agro-food complex are given. The integration interaction of various types of system elements of the AFC is considered through the prism of the stages of the reproduction process: production, distribution, exchange and consumption. It is substantiated that such a methodological technique will allow for the most complete account of the interconnections of the elements of the agro-food system, and will also contribute to the choice of the optimal type of management, in relation to a certain type of subsystem and its components.

Streszczenie:
Abstract. Past studies that attempted to quantify the spatio-temporal organization of seismicity have defined the conditions by which an event and those that follow it can be related in space and/or time. In this work, we use the simplest measures of spatio-temporal separation: the interevent distances R and interevent times T between pairs of successive events. We observe that after a characteristic value R*, the distributions of R begin to follow that of a randomly shuffled sequence, suggesting that events separated by R > R* are more likely to be uncorrelated events generated independent of one another. Interestingly, the conditional T distributions for short-distance (long-distance) events, R ≤ R* (R > R*), peak at correspondingly short (long) T values, signifying the spatio-temporal clustering (separation) of correlated (independent) events. By considering different threshold magnitudes within a range that ensures substantial catalogue completeness, invariant quantities related to the spatial and temporal spacing of correlated events and the rate of generation of independent events emerge naturally.

Spatio-temporal patterns of small water bodies (SWBs) under the influence of temporally varied stream flow discharge are simulated in discrete space by employing geomorphologically realistic expansion and contraction transformations. Cascades of expansion-contraction are systematically performed by synchronizing them with stream flow discharge simulated via the logistic map. Templates with definite characteristic information are defined from stream flow discharge pattern as the basis to model the spatio-temporal organization of randomly situated surface water bodies of various sizes and shapes. These spatio-temporal patterns under varied parameters (λs) controlling stream flow discharge patterns are characterized by estimating their fractal dimensions. At various λs, nonlinear control parameters, we show the union of boundaries of water bodies that traverse the water body and non-water body spaces as geomorphic attractors. The computed fractal dimensions of these attractors are 1.58, 1.53, 1.78, 1.76, 1.84, and 1.90, respectively, at λs of 1, 2, 3, 3.46, 3.57, and 3.99. These values are in line with general visual observations.

In this paper, we investigate from a theoretical point of view the 2D reaction-diffusion system for electrodeposition coupling morphology and surface chemistry, presented and experimentally validated in Bozzini et al. (2013J. Solid State Electr.17, 467–479). We analyse the mechanisms responsible for spatio-temporal organization. As a first step, spatially uniform dynamics is discussed and the occurrence of a supercritical Hopf bifurcation for the local kinetics is proved. In the spatial case, initiation of morphological patterns induced by diffusion is shown to occur in a suitable region of the parameter space. The intriguing interplay between Hopf and Turing instability is also considered, by investigating the spatio-temporal behaviour of the system in the neighbourhood of the codimension-two Turing--Hopf bifurcation point. An ADI (Alternating Direction Implicit) scheme based on high-order finite differences in space is applied to obtain numerical approximations of Turing patterns at the steady state and for the simulation of the oscillating Turing–Hopf dynamics.

Streszczenie:
The generation and progression of epileptiform activity, especially that associated with ictal paroxysmal neuronal discharges (seizures), is usually studied in terms of its temporal evolution rather than its spatial organization. The characterization of the spatio-temporal dynamics of epileptiform activity represents a major challenge in neuroscience, due to the very intricate nature of brain structure and function. Our study is an initial attempt to reveal the structure hidden under the spatial organization of the synchronization patterns in neuronal activity associated with epilepsy. Analysis of the phase synchronization patterns from magnetoencephalographic recordings in an epileptic patient revealed a decrease in complexity during seizures. Distinct patterns of synchronized activity were observed during interictal and ictal (seizure) activity, and new tools to quantify and visualize the information contained in a synchrony pattern are proposed. The results reported here support previous observations on the high local synchronization in seizures.

Streszczenie:
Abstract. In recent years, with high accuracy, high frequency, considerable coverage of remote sensing images, map tiles, video surveillance, web crawlers, social networking platforms and other types of spatiotemporal data have exploded in geometric progression. Human society has come into the era of big data in time and space. In view of the characteristics of multi-attribute, multi-dimensional, multisource and heterogeneous spatiotemporal big data, how to make use of the emerging information technology means, combined with the geographic information data analysis means, the rapid mining and utilization of spatiotemporal big data has become a key problem to be solved. Built on the background of spatiotemporal big data and the process of geospatial cognition, this paper proposes a "cell-cube" spatiotemporal object data model. This paper constructs a model system of geo-spatiotemporal big data from the aspects of data organization, data storage and data partition, and abstracts the geo-space into an infinite number of geo-cells, and the adjacent geo-cells gather around the core cells to form geographical clusters, and the geographical clusters with similar attributes are clustered into geographical blocks. At the level of data organization, the spatial and temporal characteristics of structured data and unstructured data are considered as organizational dimensions, and a multi-factor extended cube data model is proposed. In the aspect of data storage, the organization model is further abstracted into the cell-cube structure of distributed data warehouse, and then the spatiotemporal data is stored uniformly. At the level of data segmentation, the mathematical table and space calculation method of multi-feature extended cube are proposed, and the geographical cell data division model based on connection is established. It solves the organization and management problem of spatiotemporal big data, provides a more complete data organization framework and solution for the application of geo-spatiotemporal big data, and promotes the development of deep mining of spatiotemporal extensive data in GIS. And to achieve space-time big data in the geographical space microscopic and the macroscopic unification cognition.

Streszczenie:
This article is an analysis of the chronotope in I.A. Bunins story Cold Autumn. From the point of view of the spatio-temporal organization, this text is built quite unusually: it is clearly divided into three parts, each of which has its own characteristic. Time in the story is presented non-linearly, it flows at different speeds - the description of one evening of characters is as detailed as possible and takes two-thirds of the story, and the rest of the heroines life is only one-third. In general, the story is built retrospectively and is focused on the memories of the heroine, therefore, many dates are given indirectly. The space in the story is based on the contrast between a detailed description of the estate and the locus of the house and an abstract enumeration of the heroines multiple movements abroad. This detailed description of the events taking place in Russia and the abstraction of space and time abroad may be related to the authors personal experience: Cold Autumn which was created in exile bears the imprint of Bunins longing and nostalgia for the lost Homeland. In this study, the spatio-temporal organization of the story Cold Autumn is fitted into the context of I.A. Bunins works and is also compared with the concept of the chronotope presented by B. Pasternak in the novel Doctor Zhivago.

A spatio-temporal model of megacity development that treats the megacity as an active medium is presented. From our point of view, it is advisable to consider the process of urban ecosystem development from the standpoint of the theory of autowave self-organization in active media. According to this concept, the urban ecosystem is considered as interacting with each other’s natural and anthropogenic subsystems with significant heterogeneity of areas affected by human intervention and urban geobiocoenoses. The model is based on the general principles of active medium dynamics; therefore, it is universal for any object to be considered an active medium. The only difference when using the model to predict the development of urban ecosystems in countries with different socio-economic and political prerequisites is the variety of parameters included in the model, i.e., the activation parameter, the autowave process inhibitors, and the characteristic scales of the activator and inhibitor. The model was tested on the example of Moscow expansion in the period of 1952–1968 and showed good agreement with the map data. By means of the model, a prediction of Shanghai and surrounding territory development until 2030 was made.

AbstractThe near field of a Reynolds number $R{e}_{0} = 2. 14\ensuremath{\times} 1{0}^{5} $ and low-Mach-number cylindrical jet has been investigated by means of a high-speed stereo PIV setup that provides the spatio-temporal velocity field in a transverse plane, two diameters downstream of the jet exit. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and spatio-temporal correlations are used to identify some of the main dynamical features of this flow. We show that the flow is dominated by streamwise vortices whose production and spatial organization can be related to $m= 0$ and $m= 1$ perturbations, and to the mean shear of the mixing layer. A dynamical scenario is proposed which describes this interaction, in accordance with our observations.

Streszczenie:
Bioluminescence imaging experiments were carried out to characterize spatio-temporal patterns of bacterial self-organization in active suspensions (cultures) of bioluminescent Escherichia coli and its mutants. An analysis of the effects of mutations shows that spatio-temporal patterns formed in standard microtitre plates are not related to the chemotaxis system of bacteria. In fact, these patterns are strongly dependent on the properties of mutants that characterize them as self-phoretic (non-flagellar) swimmers. In particular, the observed patterns are essentially dependent on the efficiency of proton translocation across membranes and the smoothness of the cell surface. These characteristics can be associated, respectively, with the surface activity and the phoretic mobility of a colloidal swimmer. An analysis of the experimental data together with mathematical modelling of pattern formation suggests the following: (1) pattern-forming processes can be described by Keller–Segel-type models of chemotaxis with logistic cell kinetics; (2) active cells can be seen as biochemical oscillators that exhibit phoretic drift and alignment; and (3) the spatio-temporal patterns in a suspension of growing E. coli form due to phoretic interactions between oscillating cells of high metabolic activity.
