Streszczenie:
Agricultural hydrogels improve water retention in a variety of substrates. However, little is known about their impact on herb cultivation in rooftop farming. To identify the optimal substrate and hydrogel concentration for the growth and flowering of spearmint (Mentha spicata) in rooftop gardens, coir and perlite were mixed in three different ratios of 80% to 20% (v/v; referred to as C4P1), 50% to 50% (C1P1), or 20% to 80% (C1P4). Hydrogels were added into different substrates at different concentrations including 0 (control), 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, or 2.0 kg⋅m–3. Substrate composition significantly

Hidden hunger, also known as micronutrient deficiency, is a form of undernutrition, which is exacerbated when food security is fragile. However, the amount of phytonutrients in the diet can be increased by using underutilized species, such as fresh mint greens (Mentha). These plants have a high biological value due to the high content of biologically active substances. Plants of the genus Mentha, however, differ significantly in their chemical composition and, thus, nutritional value. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the content of phytonutrients in different Ukrainian species

The chemical composition of the essential oil of Mentha spicata from China was investigated by the Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis. 21 compounds were identified, representing 97.10% of the total oil. The major compounds in the essential oil were carvone (65.33%), limonene (18.19%), dihydrocarvone (2.97%) and camphene (2.34%). The oil showed antioxidant activity assessed using DPPH assay. The antimicrobial activity was investigated in order to evaluate its efficacy against 5 microorganisms using MIC and MBC methods. The results indicated that spearmint oil showed inhibitor

Four spearmint, and two peppermint clonal lines, selected for enhanced rosmarinic acid content (50-120 mg g-1 rosmarinic acid DW), where up to 80% of the antioxidant activity was correlated to rosmarinic acid content, were examined to determine the effects of environmental and physiological conditions on the accumulation of rosmarinic acid in leaf tissues. Exposure to a short photoperiod of 12 hours in comparison to 16 hours reduced rosmarinic acid accumulation in two mint lines, but no significant difference was found between photoperiods of 14 and 16 hours. Extraction of essential oil from spearmint leaves is typically hindered by the presence of cell wall composed of lignocellulose which can be biologically degraded by microorganisms. This study aimed to investigate the effects of fermentation using Aspergillus awamori towards the lignocellulosic content of spearmint (Mentha spicata L.) leaf as well as spearmint oil yield and composition, and diffusion coefficient obtained using different extraction methods. Fermentation of the spearmint leaves were carried out for 3, 6, and 9 days followed by drying and extraction using three different techniqu
