This thesis presents the results of a research project designed to reconstruct the Holocene vegetation history of eastern Liguria. The study area lies within the northern Apennines, a region from which few detailed late Quaternary palaeoenvironmental records had boon published and prior to this study no radiocarbon-dated pollen profiles had been reported. An in-depth field study of the Delacroix Island producing field illustrates the evolution of the east-trending Delacroix Island Fault during the last 13 My. Well log correlations and 3-D seismic interpretation of 22 subsurface bio-stratigraphic horizons across the fault reveal variable stratigraphic thicknesses and displacement. Four sediment cores were sampled in Kaggfjärden, located in the southern archipelago of Stockholm. Two of the cores were analyzed with respect to the diatom record and lithology. Terrestrial macrofossils were dated using Carbon-14 dating. The aim of the study was to detect and date changes in the environment of Kaggfjärden by using the diatom stratigraphical record.
