This paper examines the structure of the West African Cocoa Agriculture by analyzing fifteen pertinent annual series, namely; acreage, yield, producer price, quantity exported and export value of cocoa, in Ghana, Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire during the 1961- 2007 period. The methodology used is that of Perron (1989) wherein he tests the null and alternative hypotheses of a unit root or `trend-stationary` series, respectively, in the presence of possible slope and/ level shifts. The results for the Perron unit root tests indicate that all the series are trend stationary rather than being differenc

Conventional (marginalist) theory fails to provide an explanation of the need for austerity programmes. In a negative sense the economic logic of austerity rests upon the inability of the market mechanism (especially wage-price and real exchange rate flexibility) to guarantee full employment with external balance. In a positive sense an economic logic of austerity can be discovered by reference to the Keynesian approach to employment and the Sraffian approach to distribution. Beyond the limits of economic logic one must look to a political explanation for austerity. The superior alternative is

This paper analyses polarization and inequality trends in the distribution of expenditures in Cameroon during and after structural adjustment programmes. A range of measures are used and empirical estimates are obtained using ECAM I and II household surveys. The results show that inequality and polarization have similar trends in residential milieu and the six agro-ecological zones. Any policy to reduce inequality in Cameroon must focus more on inequality within rather than between regions.

This paper interrogates the implementation of the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) in Malawi, with a focus on its impacts on the livelihoods of the working class and poor people. The SAP was superimposed by the World Bank (WB) and International Monetary Fund (IMF), since 1981, to recover an ailing economy through economic austerity measures and to promote sustainable development. This paper critically discusses the key effects of the SAP in the long run, looking in particular at the effects on the unemployment rate, falling real wages, Malawians’ poor living standards and food insecurity.

The introduction of SAP has also been accompanied by significant social, cultural, and economic changes. By 1983 these hopes could no longer be sustained, as the country's growth engine -copper - assumed impossible-to-ignore sputtering levels. In came the structural adjustment programme (SAP

By making use of this comparison, the study argues that the outcome of the GEAR will be no different from structural adjustment programmes in that it will fail to reduce poverty and cause government to meet the basic needs of the people. AbstractZimbabwe has been haemorrhaging via international migration, especially since the 1990s and 2000s. While there could be as many different reasons for this exodus of Zimbabweans as there are people emigrating, it is indisputable that the introduction of the Economic Structural Adjustment Programme (ESAP) in 1991 at the behest of the Bretton Woods Institutions forms the major causes. Zimbabwe used to be a migrant-sending as well as a migrant-receiving country, but after ESAP, the trends were outwards with barely any inward movements.
