This paper presents an overview of strong motion records obtained from instrumented structures during the 1994 Northridge earthquake. It describes the behaviour of buildings, bridges, and dams that have been instrumented by the major strong motion instrumentation networks operating in California and highlights important features of the most significant structural motions recorded during the earthquake. The structural damage observed during a reconnaissance visit to the affected areas by the earthquake is correlated with preliminary analyses of the recorded motions. Detailed discussions of the dynamic behaviour of two instrumented reinforced concrete buildings that suffered damage during the earthquake are presented. The behaviour of these buildings during previous earthquakes is also examined. This paper and the companion paper on ground motions provide comprehensive information about instrumental records obtained in the region affected by the earthquake. Key words: earthquake engineering, structural response, strong motion instrumentation, damage evaluation, buildings, bridges, dams, structural dynamics, acceleration, amplification.

This study seeks special education teachers’ perception of visually impaired students’ social adjustment in inclusive settings with qualitative & exploratory design. The sample of the study included 20 teachers working in inclusive schools in the Lahore district. A self-developed semi-structured interview protocol was administered to collect data with a purposive sampling technique. The instrument’s validity was assured by expert opinion (N=02). The instrument's reliability was confirmed through an extensive literature review. Four major themes were drawn from the thematic analysis of data i.e., teachers’ perception, problems of visually impaired students, peers influence, and teachers’ efforts. Findings revealed teachers perceive orientation and mobility, supportive behaviour, the least restrictive environment, assistive technology, and motivational support as major requirements for social adjustment of visually impaired students in an inclusive set-up. The study recommended appropriate training should be provided to teachers of inclusive settings about the social adjustment of visually impaired students.

AbstractSelective laser melting (SLM) was used to manufacture smart programmed structures with customized properties made of biocompatible NiTi shape-memory alloy. A series of helixes was produced with systematically varied SLM process parameters Laser Exposure Time and Laser Power in order to specifically change the thermo-mechanical material properties of the 3D-structures. This innovation opens up the possibility to adjust the NiTi phase transformation temperature during the manufacturing process. This controllable property determines which of the two crystallographic phases martensite or austenite is present at a certain operating temperature and allows the mechanical properties to be adjusted: martensitic devices are soft and pseudo-plastic due to the shape-memory effect, whereas austenitic structures are pseudo-elastic. In a further step, the SLM process parameters were locally varied within 4Dprinted twin-helixes. As a result, the phases, respectively the mechanical properties of a single component were adjusted at different locations. The ratio of elastic to plastic deformation and the spring constant of the helix can be locally controlled. This allows, for example, the spatio-temporal programming of 3D-printed surgical instruments or implants that are stimuliresponsive.

Streszczenie:
This paper addresses the critical issue of localized damage detection in structural health monitoring. It evaluates the application of cumulative absolute velocity (CAV) as a local damage indicator for analyzing the acceleration response of a shaking table test specimen as well as real instrumented buildings. A bridge column test specimen instrumented with 18 accelerometers is subjected to increasing six levels of shaking corresponding to different damage states. The CAV analysis of the horizontal response of the accelerometers identified the elevation where damage is located. The vertical CAV analysis not only identified the existence of damage but also located the damage with high precision. This method is subsequently applied to two instrumented buildings damaged during earthquakes. The results show that for the seven-story Van Nuys hotel, the CAV can correctly locate the damage that occurred during the 1994 Northridge earthquake. For the Imperial county services building, the CAV is also able to correctly identify the location of damage. Thus, the presented CAV method enables identifying the onset and location of damage to evaluate the structural integrity.

In New Zealand, the performance of instrumented structures has rarely been tested by earthquake events with design-level motions to enable verification of the code design recommendations and related design assumptions. In the Darfield event, Rutherford building at the University of Canterbury was the only instrumented building that recorded its earthquake response. Lessons from overseas earthquakes, in particular the 1994 Northridge event, have demonstrated the invaluable use of information from instrumented buildings. In order to derive similar benefits from any future New Zealand events, steps were initiated to install modern digital accelerographs in structures. The new building instrumentation programme aims to install earthquake strong-motion instruments within up to 30 structures (mainly buildings and bridges) across New Zealand so as to measure their responses to future earthquake-induced ground motions. This article describes the objective of the instrumentation programme, highlighting the expected benefits to various end-users, the progress made so far and the future scope of the ongoing programme.

Lifestyle (LS), as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is a comprehensive concept that encompasses well-being (WB) and quality of life (QoL), directly impacting individuals' overall health. In the field of Psychology, a variety of instruments are employed to assess LS, tailored to different objectives and populations, providing insights into the impact of LS on individual health and WB. This study analyzed the instruments used to assess LS in the Brazilian context, with an emphasis on Psychology and Health Sciences, through an integrative review of national scientific literature published from 2020 to 2024, adopting a qualitative approach and exploratory nature by screening 145 publications on the topic. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 16 studies were selected. It was found that Brazilian researchers show a preference for the WHOQOL instrument and its variants. Therefore, it is essential for researchers to understand the psychometric properties of these assessment instruments to ensure the accuracy of the collected data. The choice of instrument should consider the diversity of its structures and the multidimensionality it evaluates, given the complexity of the construct.

Streszczenie:
A discrete linear-elastic, multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) dynamic model developed for the dynamic analysis of unreinforced masonry (URM) structures with flexible diaphragms is presented. The discrete MDOF dynamic model represents the dynamic response of the structure in a given direction by a reduced number of discrete masses associated to translational degrees of freedom acting in that direction. The discrete model considers the flexibility of the diaphragms and the rotations of the walls, which are included into the global translational degrees of freedom through static condensation. Soil-structure interaction effects can be easily incorporated in the method. The applicability of the method in the study of the dynamic response of a URM structure with flexible diaphragms is presented. The structure, an old firehouse located at Gilroy, California, has been instrumented by California Strong Motion Instrumentation Program (CSMIP). Instrumented records of the dynamic response of the firehouse of Gilroy during the Loma Prieta Earthquake are available. The firehouse survived the earthquake with little damage. The discrete dynamic model presented in this work has been able to reproduce well the recorded dynamic response of the firehouse of Gilroy during the Loma Prieta Earthquake.

Review articles and their more structured relative, the meta-analysis, can help to improve our understanding of a particular topic, comparing and synthesizing the results of previous research that has been done on that subject area. One way this could be done would be to review the research that has been carried out on the performance-related problems associated with playing a particular instrument or group of instruments. ... Purpose – A key issue faced by co-operative enterprises is how to raise external equity capital without compromising member control. The purpose of this study is to examine the potential of a special type of financial instrument called a Cooperative Capital Unit (CCU) introduced into the Australian legislation to facilitate external investment while maintaining member control. Design/methodology/approach – A Delphi panel and six focus groups were used to provide an understanding of the challenges associated with cooperative governance and financing and to aid the development of a conceptual framework for the implementation of CCUs. Findings – The findings from these Delphi panel and six focus groups were used to develop a proposed framework that the authors believe will be useful in structuring equity-like instruments depending on the purposes they might serve. In particular, the authors propose a new form of cooperative ownership and equity structure that could: better align member and investor interests; provide a mechanism to strengthen one role over the other depending on the needs of the cooperative; and provide investors with a better sense of security while retaining member control. Originality/value – To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the cooperative ownership and equity structure proposed in this study are novel and not currently found in theory or practice. The insights provided by this study should, therefore, be of interest to a wide range of stakeholders, including cooperatives; professional advisors to these businesses; government regulators; investors; and researchers.

British Rail Research has been progressing the development of crashworthiness in rail vehicles over a number of years. Initial work entailed the development of a structural design philosophy which advocated progressive and controlled energy absorption in accidents, the investigation of theoretical methods for analysing large plastic deformations and the static crush testing of vehicle ends. In parallel, a programme of work was set up within the International Union of Railways which resulted in an instrumented collision between vehicles whose cabs had been designed to absorb energy in a predictable way. The lessons gained from these developments are being applied to the investigation of particular accidents and to the production of improved specifications for future BR vehicles.

A testing method using 60mm diameter Nylon Hopkinson pressure bars is used to investigate the rate sensitivity of various metallic cellular materials. In order to identify the factor responsible for the strength enhancement of those materials, an experimental analysis is performed on a model structure which is a square tube made of rate insensitive materials. Significant enhancement is experimentally observed under impact loading, whereas the crushing mode is nearly the same under both static and impact loading. Finally, an inversed perforation test on sandwich panels with an instrumented pressure bar is also presented. Such a new testing setup provides piercing force time history measurement, generally inaccessible. Testing results show a notable enhancement of piercing forces, even though the skin aluminum plates and the foam cores are nearly rate insensitive.

Streszczenie:
Debt-for-nature instruments are financial transactions that allow countries to restructure and reduce foreign debt in exchange for investments in environmental conservation measures. Can debt-for-nature instruments attract more capital for biodiversity finance? Debt-for-nature instruments first appeared in the market in the 1980s; however, they have seen a recent surge in popularity, with transactions predominantly focused on marine conservation. These transactions have gained attention for their size, innovative nature, and conservation focus. However, they have also faced criticism surrounding sovereignty, effectiveness, and transaction costs. The descriptive qualitative analysis of a comprehensive and global sample of the eight tripartite type debt-for-nature instruments brought to market since 2015, with a detailed case study of the Belize transaction, indicates that such deals may be costly to negotiate, the use of blue bond labeling can be misleading, conservation benefits are limited, and they have limited replicability. On the positive side, these deals have introduced innovative structures to unlock additional funds for conservation. The best examples are structured with a larger financial commitment to nature and strong enforcement mechanisms. In some cases, the transaction laid the groundwork for future marine conservation funding and commitments. Debt-for-nature instruments are not a silver bullet for either environmental impact or debt refinancing; however, the benefits of recent transactions indicate a role for such innovative instruments in conservation finance.

Structural health monitoring of RC structures under seismic loads has recently attracted attention in the earthquake engineering research. In this paper, a piezoceramic-based device called “smart aggregate” was used for the health monitoring of RC frame structures under earthquake excitations. A two-story one-bay RC moment frame instrumented with smart aggregates was tested using a shake table. The distributed piezoceramic-based smart aggregates embedded in the RC structures were used to monitor the health condition of the structures during the tests. The sensitiveness and effectiveness of the proposed piezoceramic-based approach were investigated and evaluated by analyzing the measured responses.

Background The internet is now a major source of health information. With the growth of internet users, eHealth literacy has emerged as a new concept for digital health care. Therefore, health professionals need to consider the eHealth literacy of consumers when providing care utilizing digital health technologies. Objective This study aimed to identify currently available eHealth literacy instruments and evaluate their measurement properties to provide robust evidence to researchers and clinicians who are selecting an eHealth literacy instrument. Methods We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of self-reported eHealth literacy instruments by applying the updated COSMIN (COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments) methodology. Results This study included 7 instruments from 41 articles describing 57 psychometric studies, as identified in 4 databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and PsycInfo). No eHealth literacy instrument provided evidence for all measurement properties. The eHealth literacy scale (eHEALS) was originally developed with a single-factor structure under the definition of eHealth literacy before the rise of social media and the mobile web. That instrument was evaluated in 18 different languages and 26 countries, involving diverse populations. However, various other factor structures were exhibited: 7 types of two-factor structures, 3 types of three-factor structures, and 1 bifactor structure. The transactional eHealth literacy instrument (TeHLI) was developed to reflect the broader concept of eHealth literacy and was demonstrated to have a sufficient low-quality and very low-quality evidence for content validity (relevance, comprehensiveness, and comprehensibility) and sufficient high-quality evidence for structural validity and internal consistency; however, that instrument has rarely been evaluated. Conclusions The eHealth literacy scale was the most frequently investigated instrument. However, it is strongly recommended that the instrument's content be updated to reflect recent advancements in digital health technologies. In addition, the transactional eHealth literacy instrument needs improvements in content validity and further psychometric studies to increase the credibility of its synthesized evidence.

Streszczenie:
The construction of tunnels excavated by the conventional method in densely populated urban environments requires an adequate characterization of the loads acting on the primary lining during the excavation process, to ensure that the ground is deformed and stresses around the tunnel are relieved, simultaneously complying with the failure and serviceability limits of international standards while minimizing damage to nearby structures. In this paper, common lining design criteria are revisited, through the numerical simulation of an instrumented tunnel section which is part of a 4.5 km long metro line currently under construction in Mexico City. Key needs for improvement in current design approaches are identified. The tunnel was instrumented with load cells, extensometers, and topographical references for convergences and divergences. A three-dimensional finite difference model of the instrumented section was developed, and the load transfer mechanisms between the excavated soil and the primary lining were analyzed. Then, the numerical simulation of the contribution of the secondary lining in the overall stability for sustained load was established, along with the expected ground settlements, which can significantly affect nearby structures. Results gathered from this research are key for updating lining design criteria for urban tunnels built in stiff brittle soils.
