Recent observations of multiple shell planetary nebulae confirm the existing subdivision into two morphological types: attached halo and detached halo. The multiple shell phenomenon appears in about twenty-five percent of round and elliptical planetary nebulae of the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias morphological survey. This article aims to study the essayistic pages where Meneghello ponders on the novel in the Italian and European context. The main goal is to outline a theory of the novel proposed by Meneghello. The writer’s reflections will be compared to other essays of his time (notably The Sense of an Ending, Neorealism’s Narrative and American Lessons), and with further contemporary essays which study the Italian novel. The aim is to demonstrate that Meneghello’s theory of the novel is strictly related to the relationship between experience and writing, beyond the dichotomic subdivision between fiction and nonfiction. Therefore, a comparative path is drawn that starts with detachment from neorealism, passing through modernism and arriving at a confrontation between neo-modernism and the theory of the rhizome. In doing so, the article analyses differences and affinities with the novelists who Meneghello quotes the most: from Vittorini to Henry James, from Joyce to Calvino.

It is not easy to talk about the stars, which are strewn across the night sky in immense abundance and seemingly at random. But this communication was of the utmost importance to farmers and sailors of ancient times. To be able to name the stars, they used metaphors – similarities to earthly phenomena – and perceived relations among the stars, and justified their existence through aitia. This study presents the names of stars and constellations that can be reconstructed for the Neolithic culture of the Indo-Europeans – known ones and some newly discovered ones – and tries to determine their respective naming motives. As in ancient and modern cultures, there existed among the Indo-Europeans a plurality of competing names for stars, constellations and their variously defined subdivisions, which led to conceptual overlaps and to the formation of those stories that constitute the core stock of ancient myths and conceptions of gods.

Abstract Panic turned into despair for New York’s workers in the late 1830s and early 184os. The mass unemployment that followed the financial collapse was bad enough, prompting one newspaper to wonder how this “awful fact” had come to pass in the free and equal United States.1 The situation worsened over the next five years. Wage rates for those craft workers and laborers lucky enough to find work fell by about one-third between 1836 and 1842; in the worst years, real wages also fell ( Figs. 3 and 5). Unemployment deepened. In 1843 New Yorkers finally glimpsed the start of a recovery of business and higher wages-but within two years of the depression’s end the city was swamped with refugees from the Irish famine and from agrarian and political crises in Germany. With this sudden expansion of the supply of cheap labor, New York’s manufacturers and master craftsmen, already buoyed by the return of commercial prosperity, further expanded and extended the subdivision and contracting of work. By the late 1840s, New York’s position as the nation’s leading manufacturing site was secure, and the split labor market and the fragmentation of the artisan system were complete.

This chapter concentrates on John’s uroscopic theories as presented in his On Urines. It starts by examining the structure of the work, showing John’s intention to systematize knowledge on the subject by dividing his treatise into four large thematic areas, i.e. introductory details, diagnosis, aetiology, and prognosis, thus presenting a general-to-specific approach in each section. The analysis then shifts to John’s theories on the various stages of human digestion, which had remained undisputed for centuries. It is shown that John is eager to present his own understanding, especially on the role of the liver. John’s own observations are also evident in his discussion of the different colours of urine thanks to the extra explanatory information he provides in this respect, especially on how to differentiate between various colours. The last section focuses on John’s urine vial, which although identified as an important feature of his original approach by earlier scholars, was never fully contextualized in light of a holistic reading of John’s work or of the development of other, non-Byzantine, medieval theories on the subject. Consequently, it is argued that John’s most original contribution is the introduction and detailed definition of eleven subdivisions in the urine vial compared to the three areas traditionally identified.

A phenotype-centered view of evolution needs to start with a solid idea about the nature of the phenotype. This chapter and the next are devoted to two universal properties of phenotypes, plasticity, or responsiveness to environmental inputs; and modularity, or subdivision into semi-independent and dissociable parts (chapter 4). Of these two properties, plasticity is probably the more fundamental, for the ability to replicate, which distinguishes organic from inorganic nature, requires molecules which are interactive and precisely responsive— adaptively plastic. So plasticity must have been an early universal property of living things. The universality of modularity is a secondary, or “emergent” result of the universality of plasticity (see Wilczek, 2002, on emergent universality in physics). Any organism whose size, whether due to accretion or growth, is large enough to create internal environmental differences, such as those between the inner and the outer regions of a clump of material, has the potential for regional internal differentiation. As differentiation evolves to produce specialized parts and an internal division of labor, internal heterogeneity gives rise to conditional switches between developmental pathways. The result is a stucture characterized by somewhat discrete parts—modularity. Thus, given plasticity as a universal property of living matter, modularity follows. The present chapter describes some of the remarkable mechanisms of phenotypic plasticity. One reason to focus on mechanisms is to indicate the material basis for the evolution of plasticity, which is a product of concrete devices that are subject to genetic variation and selection. A cursory look at these mechanisms, however incomplete, by itself suggests the importance of plasticity in development and evolution, for the mechanisms of plasticity include some of the most ingenious and widely conserved creations of nature. Mechanisms of plasticity are further discussed in chapter 23, which describes how organisms assess environmental conditions when they adaptively switch between alternative developmental pathways. Phenotypic plasticity has already been defined as the ability of an organism to react to an environmental input with a change in form, state, movement, or rate of activity.

Of all the livelihoods made possible by land development, Cory Breternitz’s job was one of the more peculiar. He was paid to do archaeological excavations by people who hoped he would find nothing of interest. His Phoenix-based firm was one of many private archaeology firms that sprang up in response to legislation (the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and the National Environmental Policy Act of 1970) designed to protect cultural resources such as prehistoric artifacts or remains. These laws require government agencies and private developers to hire historians and archaeologists to survey sites and inventory the results before they start building. At the height of the Arizona housing boom, Breternitz, who had previously worked for the Navajo Nation for more than twenty years, spent much of his time on the urban fringe, sifting through desert soil, looking for evidence of Hohokam settlement before the bulldozers “scraped the desert clean” and the construction crews moved in with chipboard, two-by-fours, and stucco to throw up a brown-tiled subdivision. If Breternitz uncovered a prehistoric structure, even a hamlet, it was still the developer’s prerogative to plough it under. “The United States,” he explained, “is different than most countries in the world in that private property is sacred, and the government cannot tell you what to do with it. In places like England, historic properties on your land belong to the Crown, and whatever you find—like a hoard of medieval coins—belongs to the government. In the U.S. if you find a ruin on your land, it belongs to you and you can bulldoze it or sell the artifacts.” Some of the developers he worked for might decide to preserve his discoveries and have them curated on-site by the state so that they could be promoted as an attractive sales feature to add value to the development. But ultimately, he reported, most of them simply “want their clearance, or their permits, to move forward with their projects and make money.” Human remains are the exception to this rule, since private ownership of these is prohibited by federal and Arizona law.

This curve scheme is based on the unified subdivision rules for cubic B-splines, splines-in-tension, and some trigonometric splines that are capable of generating circles. The most important feature of the scheme is to change the end point rule such that the end points are forced to locate on lines connecting the center to the start point as well as the end point. Accurate solution of boundary layer and wake flow require generation of high aspect ratio grids in these regions. A hybrid approach for the efficient generation of inviscid and viscous unstructured grids has been introduced. A novel feature of the current work is its ability to produce boundary layer and wake grids that enables accurate flow solutions in viscous flow regions. The grid generation algorithm starts with a very coarse initial grid.
