Streszczenie:
There has been an increase in suicides in Indonesia in recent years. Suicide is the leading cause of death in the 15-29 age group. Suicide attempts begin with suicidal ideation. Suicidal ideation arises because the pain or suffering experienced by individuals occurs continuously. This study aims to analyze suicidal ideation that arises due to hopelessness and the desire to be free from pain in adolescents. Data were collected using a questionnaire adapted from the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). The study was conducted on 1154 students at one of the high schools in Central Java. The results showed that 12% of students had the idea to make a suicide attempt. Further results showed that 86% of respondents did not have a specific plan to commit suicide, 58% of respondents thought about suicide less than once a week, 41% of respondents were able to control suicidal ideation easily, 40% of respondents thought family, religion, and the pain of death could stop suicidal thoughts, and 35% of respondents made suicidal ideation as an attempt to end pain. This shows that suicidal ideation in adolescents is a problem that needs attention from various parties, one of which is the Guidance and Counseling teacher.

Abstract. Background: A suicidal person can go through different stages that include suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts. For a few individuals, these can end up with suicide. However, there have been no studies investigating any differences in attitudes toward suicides among individuals with no suicidal thoughts, those with suicidal thoughts, and those with suicide attempts. Aims: This study was carried out to compare attitudes toward suicide among three different groups: individuals with a history of no suicidal thoughts, those with a history of suicidal thoughts, and those with a history of suicide attempts. Method: To examine Koreans' attitudes toward suicide, we analyzed the data from the 2013 National Suicide Survey involving 1,500 participants aged between 19 and 75 years. Results: Different attitudes toward suicide were found among the three groups. Persons reporting that they had made a suicide attempt in their life showed the most permissive attitudes toward suicide. Limitations: Since this research is based on cross-sectional data, it is difficult to eliminate the possibility of changes in attitude toward suicide completely after having a suicidal thought and suicide attempt. Conclusion: These results can be a useful source for constructing effective messages for suicide prevention campaigns and can ultimately contribute to an improvement in the public's perceptions of suicide in the future.

AbstractBackgroundAdolescence is a high-risk period for the onset of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Identification of preceding patterns of internalizing and externalizing symptoms that are associated with subsequent suicidal thoughts may offer a better understanding of how to prevent adolescent suicide.MethodsData from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, a prospective population-based Canadian cohort, contained Child Behavior Checklist items which were used to examine profiles and transitions of internalizing and externalizing symptoms in children, aged 6–11 years (n = 8266). The association between these profiles/transitions and suicidal thoughts in adolescents was examined using multivariate logistic regression modeling.ResultsLatent profile analyses identified four measurement invariant profiles of internalizing and externalizing symptoms at ages 6/7 and 10/11: (1) low on all symptoms, (2) moderate on all symptoms, (3) high on all symptoms, and (4) high on hyperactivity/inattention and internalizing. Recurrent (homotypic or heterotypic) and increasing symptoms from 6/7 to 10/11 were associated with suicidal thoughts in adolescence, compared to those with stable low symptoms. Those with decreasing symptoms from 6/7 to 10/11 were not at increased risk of suicidal thought in adolescence.ConclusionsWhile patterns of recurrent symptoms were associated with suicidal thoughts, a similar association was observed between profiles at age 10/11 years and suicidal thoughts. This suggests that the recent assessments of mental health symptoms in children may be as sufficient a predictor of adolescent suicidal thought as transition profiles.

Suicide happens throughout one’s life and is a serious health problem. World Health Organization (WHO) placed suicidal problem as society health priority. Many things is related to suicide, among others mental disorders like depression, anxiety, alcohol consumption behavior, life pressure experienced, financial problem, personal relation, or so is chronic illness experienced, conflict occurred, disaster, harassment, alienation social demography characteristic. Objective research to identify the risk factor of suicidal thought in several regions in Indonesia. The study design was Cross sectional research conducted in 3 (three) districts/cities in Indonesia. Proportional illustration Sample taken conducted using stratified random sampling.  Fixed variables analyzed such as the suicidal thoughts with the independent variable are gender, age, marital status, education, employment, ownership statistic, depression, anxiety. Univariate, bivariate and multivariate using the SPSS software. The result of the research showed that suicidal behavior happened more often to depressed individual, lived in the cities, anxious, productive age group, has low education level. Respondent suffered through depression 11 times more likely to have suicidal thoughts. The risk of suicidal behavior also increased 5 times to respondent in the cities. Respondent living anxiety 2 times riskier to have suicidal intent. Blue collar respondent also 2 times more risk in comparison to civil servants to have suicidal intent. Therefore it can be concluded that The influence of psychological factors is more substantial to inflict suicidal behavior, even though there is also effect of the social economy factor.

This cross-sectional study investigates the determinants of suicide among 163 undergraduate students in Bayelsa State, focusing on demographic, social, economic, psychological and health determinants. This study is built on the theoretical model of Durkheim’s social integration and regulation theory. Findings from the study indicate that the prevalence rate for the thought of suicide among undergraduate students is 18%. Furthermore, suicidal thought is significantly related to CGPA of students (p<0.041). The social and economic correlates that are significant to suicidal thoughts using chi-square cross-tab from the study include; relationship with parents (p<0.000), academic pressure (p<0.013), relationship status of parents (p<0.006), and current financial status (p<0.002). On the other hand, the Pearson test found the following socio-economic variables to be significant with suicidal thoughts; academic dissatisfaction (p<0.001), relationship with parents (p<0.006), relationship status of parents (p<0.022), and financial status. Other determinants of suicidal thoughts include; depression (p<0.000) and health challenges (p<0.008). The study, therefore, concludes that suicidal thoughts among students could be a function of mainly societal factors which might be inherent in the school environment. Consequently, the study recommends that a guidance and counselling unit be strengthened in higher institutions that will assist students who might be depressed from school activities.

Purpose Early identification of persons at risk is essential in suicide prevention. Undocumented migrants (UM) live under limited conditions and are to a high degree invisible, both in research and in suicide prevention programmes. The aim of this study was to investigate prevalence rates of suicidal thoughts among UM in Sweden. Design/methodology/approach This cross-sectional study was part of the Swedish Health Research on Undocumented Migrants project (SHERUM). The study population consisted of 104 UM over 18 years of age recruited through informal networks. Data on 112 multiple choice questions was collected via trained interviewers in Gothenburg, Stockholm and Malmö during 2014–2016. To assess suicidal thoughts (the last two weeks) one item asking about suicidal thought in the Beck Depression Inventory scale (BDI-II) was used. Logistic regression and chi-square analyses were made to identify risk and protective factors. Findings Suicidal thoughts were found in 43.2% of the 88 UM that answered the question on suicidal thoughts. Being a parent had some protective influence on the prevalence of suicidal thoughts while the housing situation, having been exposed to crime and having mental illness were all statistically significant risk factors for suicidal thoughts. However, due to low sample size, few variables presented statistically significant differences. Originality/value This study presents an alarmingly high prevalence of suicidal thoughts among undocumented migrants in Sweden, a difficult-to reach, vulnerable and rarely studied group. Targeted strategies are imperative to include undocumented migrants in suicidal prevention programmes.

Suicidal ideation, also known as suicidal thoughts or suicidal tendencies, concerns one thought about suicide. A Long Way Down tells about four characters that need to be done on New Year's Eve at the Topper's House building, London. The focus of this study on one of the main characters in this novel named Martin Sharp. There are two questions in this study: How is the tendency of self-murder to be described in A Long Way Down? and What is the socio-cultural influence on suicidal tendency of Martin Sharp? The study aims to reflect the desire to kill themselves in novel works and what socio-cultural things that causes of the desire to kill themselves. The core data from this study were taken from soliloquy and the thought narrative of Martin Sharp. Data were analyzed using Emile Durkheim’s theory of suicide types. The results of this study showed that there are those who prove themselves from Martin Sharp causing by three socio-cultural issues that surround it: his status as a man who is middle-aged in England, family relations, and social pressure. The thought of self-killing from Martin Sharp was categorized as egoistic self-murder.

Streszczenie:
The Self-Regulatory Executive Function (S-REF) model (Wells & Matthew, 2015) states that psychological disorder results from an unhelpful thinking style called the Cognitive Attentional Syndrome (CAS). The CAS incorporates worry/rumination, threat monitoring and unhelpful thought control strategies and is controlled by erroneous metacognitive beliefs. The contribution of the S-REF model to the understating of rumination (paper one) and suicidal ideation (paper two) is evaluated within this thesis. Rumination is one component of the CAS. According to the S-REF model, its execution is guided by metacognitive beliefs. Paper one describes a systematic review and meta-analysis that was undertaken to establish the nature and strength of the relationships between rumination and metacognitive beliefs. Robust relationships, of moderate strength, were observed between rumination and beliefs about its benefits and between rumination and beliefs about its negative consequences. Future research should aim to delineate causality in the observed relationships and consider confounder variables. In paper two it is argued that the S-REF conceptualisation represents a promising new approach to the understanding of suicidal ideation. The importance of considering CAS processes was supported by the study findings. Worry and punishment-related thought control strategies, alongside rumination, predicted suicidal ideation. Distraction, social control and reappraisal strategies negatively predicted suicidal ideation. Some evidence that CAS processes were controlled by erroneous metacognitive beliefs was also obtained. However, this was not conclusive and should be considered again in a larger sample. Paper three describes the development of papers one and two in more detail, highlighting and justifying the important decisions made. Further reflections on methodology are also provided to demonstrate the learning achieved.

Streszczenie:
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15- to 29-year-olds. Male youths have higher risk for suicide compared to females, whereas females are at greater risk for suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. Mental disorders have been identified as one of the strongest predictors of suicidal thoughts and behaviours (STB). Among youth, sexual minority (LGB) individuals are a high-risk subpopulation for STB. Evidence about suicide risk and whether there are possible mechanisms by which some factors increase or diminish the risk according to gender or sexual orientation is scarce. The general aim of this thesis is to provide new evidence about the risk for STB and potential risk and protective factors for STB among adolescents/young adults; and how these vary according to gender and sexual orientation. To achieve this aim, we carried out a systematic review of the literature, followed by a meta-analysis, and analysed empirical data from a cohort study (UNIVERSAL: University and Mental Health) of Spanish university students. The results show that female adolescents/young adults are at greater risk for suicide attempts compared to males. As already well known through information provided by vital statistics registries, males are at higher risk for suicide. Risk and protective factors for STB differ by gender. Internalising disorders and interpersonal difficulties increase the risk among females, while externalizing disorders, hopelessness and some stressful life events (e.g. death of any of the parents) increase the risk for males. In addition, family and peer support are found to be protective factors for suicidal ideation, but only among females. LGB youth have higher risk for STB compared to heterosexuals. This risk is mediated by childhood maltreatment, bullying and a previous history of any mental disorders. Perceived sexual orientation discrimination increases the risk for any mental disorder, which, in turn, carries risk for suicidal ideation. This thesis has provided new evidence on a wide range of individual and community risk and protective factors for STB among adolescents and young adults, and has detected important differences across gender and sexual orientation with regard to STB risk. These results suggest that there is a need to combine preventive strategies focusing on individual risk factors (e.g. early diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders) with those with a public health population-level risk prevention approach (e.g. reinforcing community protective factors), as well as to consider the specific needs of high-risk groups.<br>El suicidio es la segunda causa principal de muerte entre los jóvenes de 15 a 29 años.

Kvaliteten och säkerheten inom vården minskade då sjuksköterskan själv upplevde en brist på kunskap inom detta område.<br>Suicide and suicide attempts are a public health problem all over the world. In Sweden 1500 people take their lives every year, which will be about four per day. Suicide attempts are more common among women. Men, however are more often succeed with their suicide. One of most challenging, most emotional and stressful tasks that the prehospital nurse can face, is to take care of a person with suicidal thoughts. Persons with suicidal thoughts often find it difficult to trust in other people and also have negative attitude towards life itself. A nurse should always strive to understand the patient's situation in life while doing what is possible to prevent the patient from committing suicide. In order for the patient meeting to be as successful as possible, the nurse need constantly to increase their skills, develop their attitudes and gain the required knowledge to deal with diversity that involves the treatment of people with suicidal thoughts.   The aim was to illuminate the nurses' experiences in the prehospital treatment, of patients with suicidal thoughts.   A qualitative approach was chosen to capture the nurse's experiences. Eleven nurses in the ambulance healthcare were interviewed. The interviews were recorded using a dictaphone, and then were transcribed verbatim. The analysis was carried out by a manifest, qualitative content analysis.   Four main categories emerged: Preparedness for the assignment, What creates the conditions, The meeting in an exposed situation and Emotional challenges - to move forward. The results demonstrate that the nurses did not prepare specifically before meeting a suicidal patient, other than discussed different possible scenarios with their colleague. To create optimal conditions for a good meeting with a patient, the nurse was well-prepared verbally, and felt confident. Several nurses experienced lack of adequate education in psychiatry and based their work on their own and colleagues' previous experiences. Nurses found that a great deal of care was not just about the patient but also of his or her relatives. To take care of patients with suicidal thoughts may cause many strong feelings that can negatively affect the nurse and some nurses described that they remember some of these assignments long after the event. Nurses stated that they were not in need of mental support, more than talking to their colleagues after an assignment.   The authors conclusion was that there is a need, for nurses in the ambulance care, supplementary and recurrent training in psychiatry as an important prerequisite for a patientsafe and nursing care in different situations. Quality and safety in healthcare decreased when the nurse experienced a lack of knowledge in this area.

Researchers have previously identified substance use and borderline personality disorder as factors that increase risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors. This study explored the relationship between these factors in samples of students and individuals seeking outpatient treatment. Supplemental data collected via the internet (MTurk) also looked at experiential avoidance (EA) with the Avoidance and Fusion Questionnaire for Youth. The Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV, Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, Scale for Suicide Ideation, and Personality Assessment Inventory- Borderline Features Scale elicited information regarding severity and/or frequency of substance use, suicidal thoughts, and borderline features respectively. Additionally, the Psychiatric Diagnostic Screening Questionnaire was administered to the UNT sample. The UNT sample analyses indicate substance use moderates, strengthening, the relationship between borderline features and current suicidal thoughts. However, severity of suicidal thoughts was lower for individuals high in both borderline features and substance use disorder symptoms compared to those low in borderline features and high in substance use symptoms. The MTurk sample analyses suggest substance use functions as a mediator. A robust relationship existed between substance use severity and EA, showing substance use as a behavioral marker for EA. In conclusion, concurrent treatment of substance use and borderline personality features would be beneficial in reducing risk for suicidal thoughts. Further investigation into the role and utility of addressing EA is warranted.

Background: Suicidal thoughts affect 12% of Canadian adolescents. Previous research has linked many factors to suicidality but has not considered how these factors may act together or their effect on non-mental health outcomes. Methods: I used the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth to construct predictive models for suicidal thinking. Recursive partitioning models were constructed and the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) for suicidal thoughts and secondary outcomes was calculated. I tested the models in the Avon Longitudinal Survey of Parents and Children. Results: Predictive model sensitivity was 24.2%, specificity was 89.8%, PPV was 24.7%, and NPV was 89.5% and had similar accuracy in the second dataset. The models were better at predicting other adverse outcomes compared to suicidal ideas. Conclusion: Exposure to multiple risk factors is predictive of several poor outcomes in adolescence including suicidal thoughts.

Streszczenie:
The primary aim of this thesis is to analyze the consideration of suicide by modernity which imposes life as the most essential and unconditional affirmation and death as the absolute opposite of life. Herein, the mutual exclusiveness of life and death is considered under the guidance of Foucault&rsquo<br>s critique on modernity. Thus, the potential of suicide as a resistance to the primacy of life in modern times is discussed in a Foucauldian framework. From this point forth, with inspiration from existentialist thought, a hypothetical category of philosophical suicide is defined to emphasize a peculiar form which has a more radical potential to resist the pre-given and unconditional affirmation of life than any other form of suicide. Within this framework, the peculiarity of this hypothetical category of philosophical suicide is discussed by focusing on its radical potential to resist the mode of existence dictated by modernity.

Streszczenie:
Background: The effects of physical illness and psychiatric disorders have been extensively investigated in fatal and non-fatal suicidal behaviour. Although different study designs have focused on the independent roles of physical and mental illness in suicidality, few studies have examined the relationship between co-occurring physical and mental health conditions (multimorbidity) and suicide risk. Considering the paucity of research, the present doctoral programme of research aimed to investigate if populations with physical/mental multimorbidity have an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviours, compared to those with neither physical nor mental health conditions, and further investigate if this effect is stronger than either of the health conditions alone. Methods: Based on the well-established terms of comorbidity and multimorbidity, the effect of co-occurring health conditions in the risk of suicidality was investigated by undertaking an overview of reviews and a systematic review. Four empirical studies of existing datasets were conducted in order to explore if suicidality (suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts) varies as a function of physical/mental multimorbidity. Two national mental health surveys from the United Kingdom (National Psychiatric Morbidity Survey 2000, n = 8575; Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey 2007, n = 7389) and one cohort study carried out in Scotland (West of Scotland Twenty-07 study, n = 4510) were used and both cross-sectional and prospective study designs were employed. Results: Findings indicated that those with physical/mental multimorbidity are more likely to have suicidal thoughts and attempt suicide, compared to those with neither physical nor mental health conditions. The results were consistent: having both physical and mental health conditions did not increase risk of suicidal thoughts or attempts, beyond the risk conferred by mental illness alone. Having only physical health conditions was not associated with either suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts. Conclusions: Overall, the findings suggest a potential risk of suicidality for populations with physical/mental multimorbidity. Although multimorbidity was a predictor of suicidality, it did not increase the risk of any suicide-related outcome more than mental health conditions alone. The current findings highlight that health care professionals should focus on populations who have reached services for non-mental health issues, but subsequently develop mental illness, as this pattern of multimorbidity could potentially be a risk factor for suicidal thoughts and behaviours. Further research is needed to better understand the risk of suicide in individuals with physical/mental multimorbidity.

AbstractInsight from individuals with lived experience suggests that unnecessary hospitalization decreases the likelihood that individuals will disclose suicidal thoughts and behaviors to providers. To improve engagement and create better outcomes for individual who experiences a suicidal crisis, clinicians should receive suicide-specific training that emphasizes personalized care for each patient that matches their level of risk. Individualized safety planning and options other than inpatient hospitalization should be prioritized when suicidal thoughts and behaviors are disclosed to providers and when the level of risk does not warrant hospitalization. This will allow youth who make such disclosures to get access to effective and minimally restrictive interventions while preventing trauma and harm. Finally, healthcare systems must focus on investing resources and research into alternatives to inpatient care as treatment for suicidal crises, and individuals with lived experience will be an essential asset to this process.

Suicide causes approximately 800,000 deaths worldwide every year, which means one death by suicide every 40 seconds. Suicidal ideation is the first stage in the suicide risk scale, in which the individuals have thoughts regarding being dead. Thereby, suicide prevention strategies may focus on identifying and treating individuals with this severity level. Therefore, this article presents the summary of an Academic Master’s Dissertation that proposes Thoth, a computational model for assisting people suffering from suicidal ideation. The main scientific contribution of the Thoth is the personalized assistance for individuals at risk of suicidal ideation through the analysis of Context Information for anticipating the identification of future risks. The model gathers sensor, sociodemographic, and psychological data for future risk checking through Machine Learning models. Experiments showed that the models obtained F1-Score up to 94.12%. Based on the experiments, Thoth could act in a personalized manner, sending recommendations and alerts to patients and caregivers, respectively. Thus, this research provides an improvement in the assistance of individuals with suicidal ideation through the proposed model.

Healthcare quality and improvement relies on recognizing and improving patters of practice. AI involves self-learning systems using machine learning and pattern recognition to emulate thought processes typically conducted by humans. The purpose of this project was to assess the current state and challenges of healthcare quality and to charter a path forward for innovative applications of Artificial Intelligence technology to strengthen healthcare strategies. Knowledge integration was conducted across medical disciplines to identify key challenges in healthcare delivery and assess how Artificial Intelligence can be leveraged to strengthen healthcare quality. Currently, approximately half of the global population spends less than 5 minutes with their physician during doctor visits. It takes on average of 23.1 seconds for a physician to interrupt patients while they are telling their story. Most patients around the world will experience one or more diagnostic errors in their lifetime. Systematic reviews and narrative reviews of the available evidence report varying global diagnostic error rates ranging from 5% to 23.5%. Currently the physician suicide rate that is 1.5 to 4.5 times higher than that of the general population. Between 30-50% of medical students and residents experience burnout. Burnout is nearly doubling the rate of medical errors, and physicians involved in major errors are experiencing a threefold increase in suicidal ideation. AI technology has the potential to have transformative effects on increasing diagnostic accuracy, mmitigating medical errors, screening and early diagnosis, ddetermining disease susceptibility and progression. Advantages of AI include efficiency, accuracy, prediction/modelling, standardization, immune to fatigue, self-correcting abilities, and accuracy. Drawbacks of AI include developmental costs, unclear legislation, integration issues, lack of explainability, insufficient digital literacy, limited data sharing, and fear of the known. Even with unprecedented innovations in healthcare, we must utilize tried and true methods of healthcare assurance and improvement including identifying vulnerabilities, mitigating biases, and ensuring health equity. AI presents a tool to address longstanding issues in healthcare delivery and achieve a caliber of healthcare quality that was previously beyond our grasp.

Streszczenie:
Cannabis is the most commonly used substance that remains federally illegal in the United States. With its rising legality in many states across the nation, it is important to understand the influence that cannabis can have on a user's physical and mental well-being. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2022), suicide is among the top nine leading causes of death in the United States for individuals aged 10 to 64. Research suggests that individuals diagnosed with depression who experience suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts is positively correlated with both daily cannabis use and non-daily cannabis use and that this correlation is more significant in women than in men (Han et al., 2021). This study seeks to generalize this finding by investigating both the prevalence and intensity of 30-day cannabis use amongst individuals who endorse suicidal thoughts in the last 12 months and the moderating effect of gender identity on the relationship between 30-day cannabis use and suicidal thoughts in the last 12 months. This study will utilize a sample of college students who completed the American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment Survey sometime between the Fall academic semester of 2019 to the Spring academic semester of 2021. The survey was completed on campuses across the United States with data collected on students’ health habits, behaviors, and perceptions. This data set consists of 198,848 participants aged 18 to 98 years of age (MAge = 23.16), with 66.27% of participants identifying as cisgender women and 30.83% identified as cisgender men. Within the dataset, 40.30% of participants endorsed thinking about or planning suicide in the last 12 months and 19.34% of participants reported using cannabis in the last 30 days. We anticipate that individuals who reported cannabis use in the last 30 days will show an increase in suicidal ideation in the last 12 months compared to individuals who reported never using cannabis. Similarly, we anticipate that gender identity will moderate and strengthen the relation between cannabis use and suicidal ideation in such that individual who identify as women will have a stronger and more significant correlation between cannabis use and suicidal ideations compared to individuals who identify as men. If these results are supported, future research will be warranted to further investigate how the nuanced interaction between gender identity and cannabis use increases our understanding of the upward trend in suicidality among individuals with and without mental health diagnoses.

Streszczenie:
Background: Suicide is a leading cause of death in young people and an escalating public health crisis. We aimed to assess the effectiveness and harms of available treatments for suicidal thoughts and behaviors in youths at heightened risk for suicide. We also aimed to examine how social determinants of health, racism, disparities, care delivery methods, and patient demographics affect outcomes. Methods: We conducted a systematic review and searched several databases including MEDLINE®, Embase®, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and others from January 2000 to September 2024. We included randomized clinical trials (RCTs), comparative observational studies, and before-after studies of psychosocial interventions, pharmacological interventions, neurotherapeutics, emerging therapies, and combinations therapies. Eligible patients were youths (aged 5 to 24 years) who had a heightened risk for suicide, including youths who have experienced suicidal ideation, prior attempts, hospital discharge for mental health treatment, or command hallucinations; were identified as high risk on validated questionnaires; or were from other at-risk groups. Pairs of independent reviewers selected and appraised studies. Findings were synthesized narratively. Results: We included 65 studies reporting on 14,534 patients (33 RCTs, 13 comparative observational studies, and 19 before-after studies). Psychosocial interventions identified from the studies comprised psychotherapy interventions (33 studies, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality, Dynamic Deconstructive Psychotherapy, Attachment-Based Family Therapy, and Family-Focused Therapy), acute (i.e., 1 to 4 sessions/contacts) psychosocial interventions (19 studies, acute safety planning, family-based crisis management, motivational interviewing crisis interventions, continuity of care following crisis, and brief adjunctive treatments), and school/community-based psychosocial interventions (13 studies, social network interventions, school-based skills interventions, suicide awareness/gatekeeper programs, and community-based, culturally tailored adjunct programs). For most categories of psychotherapies (except DBT), acute interventions, or school/community-based interventions, there was insufficient strength of evidence and uncertainty about suicidal thoughts or attempts. None of the studies evaluated adverse events associated with the interventions. The evidence base on pharmacological treatment for suicidal youths was largely nonexistent at the present time. No eligible study evaluated neurotherapeutics or emerging therapies. Conclusion: The current evidence on available interventions intended for youths at heightened risk of suicide is uncertain. Medication, neurotherapeutics, and emerging therapies remain unstudied in this population. Given that most treatments were adapted from adult protocols that may not fit the developmental and contextual experience of adolescents or younger children, this limited evidence base calls for the development of novel, developmentally and trauma-informed treatments, as well as multilevel interventions to address the rising suicide risk in youths.

Discharge from hospital following a suicidal crisis is a crucial time for the provision of high-quality aftercare. Providing aftercare services has been demonstrated to reduce the risk of further suicide attempts, deaths, and to increase the likelihood that people will seek professional support when experiencing suicidal thoughts. this Evidence Check aims to provide a review of the evidence for suicide aftercare services and effective characteristics of these services, focusing on comprehensive aftercare services being provided in Australia. This review identified 53 relevant studies in the peer reviewed literature. As a search of the grey literature did not uncover a comprehensive overview of available services, an online survey of PHNs was undertaken to address this gap. Most studies found that comprehensive aftercare programs and brief intervention programs are effective (63% and 70% of studies respectively). There have been no comprehensive dismantling studies published which evaluate the effectiveness of individual components or characteristics of suicide aftercare programs. However, this review identified components and characteristics that were common to programs that effectively reduced suicide-related outcomes such as reattempts.

Review question / Objective: Is electroacupuncture a safe therapy for the treatment of depression? Is electroacupuncture effective for the treatment of depression, as compared with sham control, or conventional drugs? Condition being studied: Depression is a mood disorder that causes sufferers to feel sadness, decreased interest, guilt, self-blame, loss of energy, and experience sleep disorders such as insomnia. People suffering from depression even feel they have no way out and have suicidal thoughts. In the United States, the prevalence of a major depressive disorder is 16.2%1-3. The 2010 Global Burden of Disease Study identified major depression as the second leading cause of disability worldwide and a leading cause of the burden of suicide and ischaemic heart disease. At present, depression patients are mainly treated with antidepressants, but the efficacy is extremely unstable. Studies have shown that acupuncture can help improve symptoms in patients with depression, but these clinical studies have not been systematically evaluated, and further confirmation is needed to confirm the efficacy of electroacupuncture in treating depression.

Background: University students are at heightened risk of suicide and are reluctant to reach out for support. Traditional risk assessment approaches are unreliable, prompting calls for psychosocial assessments with multivariable algorithms grounded in person-centred approaches. This paper outlines considerations in implementing one such program, identifying potential implementation barriers and offering recommendations for minimising them. Method: We conducted three surveys with university staff and students (total N = 672) to assess acceptability of a preventative screening and referral program. Participants were also asked to identify barriers to implementing such a program within university settings. Results: Staff and students thought universal screening and referral would be acceptable, and important to implement. Identified barriers included privacy, risk and liability, appropriate resourcing, and cultural appropriateness. Conclusion: Universal preventative screening and referral for suicide risk among university students is a feasible, and scalable, means of identifying students at risk and offering support before they reach crisis point. Identifying barriers early, and having strategies to minimise them, can ease the way to successful implementation.

Streszczenie:
Some transgender women use estrogen as part of their hormone therapy for gender affirmation. Estrogen helps transgender women align their bodies with their female gender identity. Gender affirmation with hormone therapy has benefits such as improved quality of life and reduced depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.
