This thesis asks one fundamental question that is either implicit or explicit in each part. The underlying question is whether religious belief rests on a belief in a supernatural existence for its sense. I argue that this is not so, and that the sense of religious concepts does not presuppose any supernatural existence. In Part One I discuss the philosophical landscape that we have inherited from Hume, and how H.O. Mounce’s attempt to re-interpret Hume’s criticisms of religion, in the light of Hume’s own naturalist tendencies, still cannot reach any supernatural existence. In Part Two, I focus on two ways that seem to imply a supernatural existence ‘beyond’ us. The first concerns the concept of power; the second concerns our ethical life. Both seem to presuppose some sort of a supernatural existence. The former seems to do so through the notion of the power of God as that which is experienced entering human life from another realm; the latter, because morality seems to require that the injustices we experience in life needs correcting, if not in this life, then in a life after death. In Part Three my concern is to explore the possibility of the religious sense of the supernatural. In this respect, I challenge the assumption that the meaning of ‘the existence of God’ entails a belief in a supernatural being.

Throughout the last century there has been much discussion over what it is that makes an activity or a theory 'scientific'. In the philosophy of science, conversation has focused on differentiating legitimate science from so-called 'pseudoscience'. In the broader cultural sphere this topic has received attention in multiple legal debates regarding the status of creationism, where it has been generally agreed that the 'supernatural' nature of the claims involved renders them unscientific. In this thesis I focus upon the latter of these issues, arguing that although there may be merit in the larger demarcation project of separating science from pseudoscience, the notion of 'supernaturality' does not belong in this adjudication. Due to the complex cultural issues that have played a role in the history of this topic, this will involve a degree of historical and normative analysis alongside more philosophically abstract considerations. Complicating the discussion is thefact that neither the term 'science' nor 'supernatural' enjoys a widely agreed upon definition. In order to assess the question then, I will survey a wide variety of definitions of each term in order to identify areas of potential conflict. I argue that in none of the prevalent understandings can we find impediment to scientific investigation inherent in the supernaturality of a claim, but rather posit that where difficulty arises it does so for more mundane reasons. I conclude that not only is there no inherent issue with scientific investigation of the supernatural, but that the term 'supernatural' itself is too poorly defined to provide a useful role in philosophical discussion. While I argue that notions of supernaturality should be abandoned entirely when assessing demarcation criteria, I concede that numerous extraneous factors, including the significant degree of overlap between the supernatural and the 'religious', warrant consideration of a compromise position.

This thesis makes predictions for the temperature anisotropy spectrum of the CMB under the supernatural inflation model class [17] and compares these predictions against the Boomerang 98 data [5], using the Lange et. al [11] cosmological parameter estimations for an [Omega]tot = 1 universe. This was implemented by creating a modified version of CMBFAST [19] which could accommodate a two-field inflation model. A series of codes were compiled, both with and without modifications, to determine the effect of the supernatural primordial spectrum spike on CMB simulations at the Planck, GUT and Intermediate energy scales, where the inflaton field has renormalizable couplings to other fields. While the spike's effects at lMpc were found to be negligible, the detailed calculations of the scalar spectral index, ns, demonstrate that the energy scale most favored by Randall et. al on particle physics grounds, is actually the one most tightly constrained by observation.

This thesis set out to meet the following aim and objectives: Aim: Examine cognition and personality of people who hold different types of supernatural belief. Objective 1: Create and validate a new scale to measure supernatural belief. Objective 2: Create and test a new model of supernatural belief based on cognition and personality. This would potentially test two hypotheses: the Cognitive Deficits Hypothesis and the Psychodynamics Functions Hypothesis. This was accomplished by conducting four studies. Studies one and two created and validated the new Belief in the Supernatural Scale (BitSS), a 44 item scale with the following five factors: ‘mental and psychic phenomena’, ‘religious belief’, ‘psychokinesis’, ‘supernatural entities’, and ‘common paranormal perceptions’. Cognition and personality would be looked at within the context of four different types of believer: ‘believers’, ‘paranormal believers’, ‘sceptics’ and ‘religious believers’. Study three revealed two profiles relating to cognition: ‘reflective thinkers’ and ‘intuitive believers’. The reflective profile was more likely to contain ‘sceptics’ and ‘believers’, and least likely to contain ‘paranormal believers’. The intuitive group was more likely to contain ‘religious believers’ and ‘believers’. The final study looked at personality alongside cognition and revealed ‘sensitive and abstract thinkers’ and ‘reflective metacognitive dogmatists’ profiles. The ‘sensitive and abstract thinkers’ were least likely to contain ‘sceptics’ and ‘religious believers’ and most likely to contain ‘believers’ and ‘paranormal believers’. The ‘reflective metacognitive dogmatists’ were most likely to contain ‘religious believers’ and ‘believers’ and least likely to contain ‘paranormal believers’. Following this analysis, Structural Equation Modelling was used to test seven different models of personality, cognition and belief. Studies one and two indicated a clear separation of religious and paranormal belief within the new scale, and that spiritual belief overlaps between the two. The scale developed was reliable and valid, and accurately reflected the concept of supernatural belief and enabled the measurement of religious and paranormal belief, where the overlaps were acknowledged whilst still being separate beliefs. Studies three and four found the ‘sceptics’ and ‘religious believers’ have remarkably similar profiles, indicating that the religious beliefs themselves may have been cognitively ring-fenced off in some way. The ‘paranormal believers’ however were not reflective thinkers and were not metacognitively active, indicating that they were not aware that they were not thinking critically or analytically. The Structural Equation Model showed that schizotypy was the main predictor of belief. The relationship between belief and cognition was more complex; it was dependent on what type of belief was active. Paranormal belief required a more intuitive thinking style to be present, whereas religious belief could withstand a reflective mind set. This thesis develops a new scale that measures supernatural belief provides a unique contribution to knowledge by establishing a model of cognition, personality and belief.

This project began with a love for the New Forest and a wish to understand the ways in which writers utilise it as location. It was asked how writers capture, convey and utilise this particular place and whether intimate knowledge of it can enhance their work. An analysis was made of the impression of the New Forest given by writers, whether as a setting, as sanctuary, or by utilising its supernatural effects. The knowledge gained from such research enabled the production of 23 short stories of varying lengths, entitled Haunts & Shades, with the New Forest as their linking location. Research was conducted into both fiction and non-fiction writing featuring the New Forest, ranging from Daniel Defoe in 1724 to writers of the 21st century. Specific writers were then chosen and analysed in more depth. The effect of location on a writer was evaluated. Professional writers’ advice on the use of location was studied. The New Forest itself was explored, historically and physically. Residents of the Forest, some of whom can trace their ancestry for several hundred years, were used as character studies in the story collection. Analysis revealed the advantages of a ‘total immersion’ approach and showed the pitfalls of relying on research alone for details of location. The short stories benefitted from the application of knowledge gained from such research. Each use of location in Haunts & Shades was influenced by awareness of its particular ambience, gained by the writer in a unique way. A first-hand knowledge of a location helps to provide a particular literary effect, an intimacy to the work. The thesis acknowledges that a writer, by meticulous research, can produce a valid and popular work. However, in order to convey a sense of a chosen location, a writer benefits from being immersed in its sights and sounds, myths and facts.

This study focuses on all-male dialogues in the popular television series Supernatural. The purpose is to determine if and to what extent some linguistic features that are said to be characteristic of competitive talk among men occur in these dialogues. Do modern, scripted dialogues correspond to the impression given in the literature? Can the principal male characters‟ spoken interaction in Supernatural be considered competitive and thus stereotypically male?The material for this quantitative and qualitative study consists of the entire third season of the series, which comprises 16 episodes that were originally broadcast in 2007-2008. The quantitative analysis consists in counting the occurrences of the linguistic features investigated in the dialogues between two or all three of the main characters. The qualitative aspect was about identifying and interpreting the linguistic features in relation to the contexts in which they occur.The results show that the dialogues between the three main characters in Supernatural do contain some features said to be characteristic of competitive speech among men. While there are no occurrences of verbal sparring, the other phenomena investigated (questions, impersonal topics, monologues and playing the expert) are common. However, the results also show interesting aspects of these features that do not correspond with competitive speech style.

A diversidade de suportes e mídias que povoam o mercado tecnológico atualmente desperta preocupações por parte dos produtores de conteúdo cultural comercial devido principalmente à necessidade de atender a um novo público que busca cada vez mais interagir com narrativas, com os produtores e com demais consumidores. A web, com suas ferramentas de interatividade e construção coletiva de conhecimento, se destaca como ponto de união de interesses tanto de produtores, com a maior variabilidade de suas narrativas, quanto dos consumidores, com suas diversas formas de fruição de conteúdo. Partindo da hipótese de que as ferramentas da web interferem na forma de fruição, o objetivo da pesquisa se volta para a identificação dessas ferramentas e análise crítica de sua utilização na transmissão de conteúdo audiovisual na web. A pesquisa se debruça sobre um produto audiovisual, a série de TV Supernatural, buscando observar quais são as ferramentas envolvidas no processo de convergência midiática entre televisão e internet, mais especificamente, a apropriação feita pelo público do conteúdo audiovisual para sua transmissão na web, originalmente produzido para a TV. O objetivo é compreender criticamente esse deslocamento de conteúdo e qual a importância das características da web para essa dinâmica, buscando responder quais recursos midiáticos estão disponíveis para transmissão de conteúdo audiovisual. Esta observação se faz a partir da análise de três sites distintos, com formas diferentes de disponibilização do conteúdo de série Supernatural, buscando uma gama maior de ferramentas disponíveis próprias da web
The diversity in media and supports which populate the technology market nowadays brings about some worry on the part of the producers of culturally commercial content due, mainly, to the need of catering to a new public who looks more and mor to interact with the narrative, with said producers and with other consumers of such media. The web, with its interactivity tools and collective construction of knowledge, comes across as union focus of of interests from the part of the producers, with a greater varibility of its narratives, and also from the part of the consumers, with its many ways of fruition of such content. Coming from the bypothesis that the web-tools interfere in the ways of fruition, the aim of this research is to turn is focus on the identification of these tools and on the critical analysis of its usage in the transmission of audiovisual content over the web. The research focu on an audiovisual product, the TV series Supernatural, aiming to observe what are the tools involved in the media convergence process between television and the internet, more specifically, the appropriation made by the public of the audiovisual content for its transmission on the web, originally produced for the TV. The goal is to critically understand such content displacement and what is the importance of the web characteristics for this dynamic, trying to answer what media resources are available for the transmission of audiovisual content. This observation is made by the analyses of three distinct websites, with different ways of release of the content of the series Supernatural, trying to achieve e bigger frame of reference on the tools available over the web

This dissertation examines uncertainties about the supernatural among members of the urban middle class in Tehran, Iran. In particular, I attend to the ways in which the category of the supernatural (mavara) has become, for some people, an object of potential scientific (`elmi) inquiry that must be distinguished from approaches usually ascribed to the rural, the uneducated, and the poor, often deemed as either superstitions (khorafat) or parochically religious (dini). By examining a range of encounters with the supernatural - such as attempts to explain communications with the souls of the dead, make sense of spirit possession, and differentiate real magic from charlatanism - I highlight the varied modalities through which perspectives and forms of reasoning imagined to be rational and scientific are brought to bear on matters that are understood to lie, at least partially, within the purview of religious knowledge. I situate such supernatural encounters against a backdrop of state disciplinary and coercive measures, thereby illuminating important shifts in Iran's politico-religious landscape in the past two decades, such as the waning of the religious authority of the Shi`i ulama among certain sections of society. This declining authority does not necessarily imply a weakened interest in Islam (although this is sometimes the case). Rather, it has opened up a space for reception and deliberation of a multiplicity of sources of religious knowledge, both Islamic and non-Islamic. These include forms of Western-imported spirituality and occultism that have been entering Iran for over a century, with their most recent wave consisting of translated texts of New Age spirituality, self-help success literature, and popular psychology that have gained popularity since the end of the war with Iraq. The metaphysical models on offer through these spiritual systems are usually promoted and understood as scientific rather than religious. That is, rather than being seen as contradicting Islamic notions, these formulations are often viewed as parallel to them. By attending to such notions and their everyday manifestations, my project brings into focus various hybrid forms of religious-scientific knowledge, experience, and discourse that have largely been ignored in the study of modern Muslim societies.

This thesis argues that fanfic operates through a paradox of legitimation. Using the current cult text Supernatural (CW, 2006-) as a case study, discourse theory adapted from Foucault is utilized to establish that discursive formations from the source text can be de- and re-constructed, sometimes consolidating canon’s constructions, but at other times, altering Othered characterizations and criticising statements from canon. Paradoxically, however, this process utilizes and functions through the capital of the already-empowered: the White male Author (Jenkins 1995; Hills 2002; 2010a; Wexelblat 2002; Gray 2010; Kompare 2011; Scott 2011), and/or the White male protagonists of the series (c.f. Dyer 1992). The discursive formations studied are identified from the researcher’s situated position as fan- insider and academic (c.f. Hills 2002; Hodkinson 2005). They are judged to be of significance in the canon and fandom, and pertinent to the questions of power and Authority this study addresses. The methodology utilizes some techniques from network analysis (Park and Thelwall 2003) to chart the impact of fan-statements in an innovative fashion, using both quantitative and qualitative measures, whilst retaining insights from discourse theory to account for the specificity of fiction as a particular form of writing. In this way, the strength of statements, discursive boundaries, and techniques for alteration can be observed. The study concludes that, though the legitimation paradox cannot be unproblematically escaped or overcome, fanfic has begun to compromise it via deconstruction of the concepts of originality and authorship; and thus, from a postmodern perspective, the terms of the legitimation paradox can begin to be questioned.

Motivational approaches to the study of supernatural beliefs propose that such beliefs serve psychological functions. I tested the proposal that supernatural agents and forces are sought out as social surrogates to fulfill the need to belong. First, I present preliminary data consistent with the claim that the belongingness motive and deficits in belongingness (i.e., loneliness) are related to supernatural beliefs. Next, I report an experiment testing the supernatural social surrogate proposal. I hypothesized that affirming belongingness would reduce supernatural beliefs and that the relationship between the predictors and supernatural beliefs would weaken if one’s belonging is affirmed. If supernatural beliefs are motivated by belongingness concerns, then meeting people’s belongingness needs should reduce their inclination to turn to supernatural social surrogates. I further predicted these effects would remain significant when controlling for known cognitive correlates of supernatural beliefs. Results did not support the social surrogate hypothesis.

Resumo: A diversidade de suportes e mídias que povoam o mercado tecnológico atualmente desperta preocupações por parte dos produtores de conteúdo cultural comercial devido principalmente à necessidade de atender a um novo público que busca cada vez mais interagir com narrativas, com os produtores e com demais consumidores. A web, com suas ferramentas de interatividade e construção coletiva de conhecimento, se destaca como ponto de união de interesses tanto de produtores, com a maior variabilidade de suas narrativas, quanto dos consumidores, com suas diversas formas de fruição de conteúdo. Partindo da hipótese de que as ferramentas da web interferem na forma de fruição, o objetivo da pesquisa se volta para a identificação dessas ferramentas e análise crítica de sua utilização na transmissão de conteúdo audiovisual na web. A pesquisa se debruça sobre um produto audiovisual, a série de TV Supernatural, buscando observar quais são as ferramentas envolvidas no processo de convergência midiática entre televisão e internet, mais especificamente, a apropriação feita pelo público do conteúdo audiovisual para sua transmissão na web, originalmente produzido para a TV. O objetivo é compreender criticamente esse deslocamento de conteúdo e qual a importância das características da web para essa dinâmica, buscando responder quais recursos midiáticos estão disponíveis para transmissão de conteúdo audiovisual. Esta observação se faz a partir da análise de três sites distintos, com formas diferentes de disponibilização do conteúdo de série Supernatural, buscando uma gama maior de ferramentas disponíveis próprias da web
Abstract: The diversity in media and supports which populate the technology market nowadays brings about some worry on the part of the producers of culturally commercial content due, mainly, to the need of catering to a new public who looks more and mor to interact with the narrative, with said producers and with other consumers of such media. The web, with its interactivity tools and collective construction of knowledge, comes across as union focus of of interests from the part of the producers, with a greater varibility of its narratives, and also from the part of the consumers, with its many ways of fruition of such content. Coming from the bypothesis that the web-tools interfere in the ways of fruition, the aim of this research is to turn is focus on the identification of these tools and on the critical analysis of its usage in the transmission of audiovisual content over the web. The research focu on an audiovisual product, the TV series Supernatural, aiming to observe what are the tools involved in the media convergence process between television and the internet, more specifically, the appropriation made by the public of the audiovisual content for its transmission on the web, originally produced for the TV. The goal is to critically understand such content displacement and what is the importance of the web characteristics for this dynamic, trying to answer what media resources are available for the transmission of audiovisual content. This observation is made by the analyses of three distinct websites, with different ways of release of the content of the series Supernatural, trying to achieve e bigger frame of reference on the tools available over the web

Spiritualism was a popular cultural movement that flourished in the late-19th century across the United States and eventually Europe. While there were many facets of its philosophy, the primary conviction behind Spiritualism was that spirits of the dead could communicate with the living through human mediums. Although this basic definition of Spiritualism is virtually uncontested in contemporary scholarship, the cultural causes of the movement remain a highly debated topic. Historians have proposed a variety of theories for Spiritualism's inception, but none have yet to explore the economic motivations behind the movement. Spiritualism was, in fact, a vital commercial enterprise that spurred entrepreneurial and consumption opportunities for thousands of nascent capitalists. During the movement's prime, a host of Spiritualist merchandise was mass produced and marketed, including talking boards, spirit photographs, séances, and planchettes. Together, these products were produced and consumed in what became an "economy of the supernatural"--a thriving industry based on the desire to communicate with deceased humans. Through analysis of product advertisements and opinions raised about the issue found in mass media, this thesis will demonstrate that economic motivation was behind every aspect of Spiritualist practice. No part of the movement was left untouched by the desire for financial gain. Furthermore, this thesis argues that while various cultural forces influencing Spiritualism would diminish over time, the movement was able to sustain itself through the development of an economy of supernatural products and services, many of which continue to be produced to this very day.

Petronius, like many of his contemporaries, had a deep interest in magic. Although magic rituals and tales with a supernatural theme make up a considerable part of the fragments that remain of his novel the Satyrica, little attention has been paid to Petronius’ account of magic. It is a commonplace of Petronian scholarship that the author is a realist, in his predilection for the seamier side of life, in his reproduction of popular speech, in his satirising of contemporary social issues, in his frank treatment of sexuality and in his expropriation of the popular mime, a genre defined by its attention to realism. This thesis, however, will argue that Petronius is a realist in a dimension which has not hitherto been explored in detail: his treatment of res magicae, which, as the commentary will show, is grounded in a bedrock of popular belief as recorded in documentary, as well as literary, texts. The commentary provides, therefore. a detailed examination of a selection of passages from Petronius’ novel Satyrica which have bearing on this aim. These passages include the rituals of Quartilla (16.1-26.6), Proselenos (131.1-131.7) and Oenothea (134.8-138.4) as well as the supernatural anecdotes recounted in the Gene Trimalchionis: the tales of Niceros (61.6-62.14) and Trimalchio (63.1-64.2). it is the contention of this thesis that these passages have real value for the study of ancient magic in that they provide rare insight into contemporary beliefs and realistically describe in detail actual magical rites as they would have been practised by members of Petronius’ society. The commentary provides numerous parallels for the magical procedures described by Petronius as well as discussion, and where these procedures are part of a greater scheme (for example, the three rituals mentioned above) particular attention has been paid to the role these individual procedures play in the ritual as a whole.

Modern stories are the product of a recursive process influenced by elements of genre, outside content, medium, and more. These stories exist in a multitude of forms and are transmitted across multiple media. This article examines how those stories function as pieces of a broader narrative, as well as how that narrative acts as a world for the creation of stories. Through an examination of the polymediated nature of modern narratives, we explore the complicated nature of modern storytelling.

This dissertation investigates Sir Walter Scott’s The Bride of Lammermoor and particularly focuses on the coexistence of the supernatural, tragic, and comic dimensions within the novel. After briefly introducing Scott’s role as the inventor of the historical novel and the mutual influence of Romanticism and Enlightenment in his works, the first chapter examines the position of The Bride of Lammermoor within the cycle of the Waverley Novels, and highlights the peculiarities that distinguish it from its companions. The following chapter analyses Scott’s viewpoint and use of the Gothic genre and explores the Gothic component of The Bride of Lammermoor in detail, examining its numerous Gothic and supernatural aspects, and devoting particular attention to the Gothic portrayal of its remarkably powerful female characters. Finally, as The Bride of Lammermoor is characterized by a uniquely tragic form and conclusion, but also presents a surprisingly comic subplot, the last chapter of this dissertation deals with the intermingling of such opposing styles in the novel, and with the analysis of Edgar Ravenswood, Lucy Ashton, and Caleb Balderstone as quixotic characters, evidencing their tragic and tragicomic dimensions, respectively. The purpose of this dissertation is to accurately examine The Bride of Lammermoor's perfect intertwining of the contrasting modes that characterize it in order to evidence the excellence of both this novel and its author.

La presente tesi si propone di investigare La Sposa di Lammermoor di Sir Walter Scott e si focalizza in particolare sulla compresenza di soprannaturale, tragico e comico all'interno del romanzo. Dopo una breve introduzione sul ruolo di Scott come inventore del romanzo storico e sulla reciproca influenza che Romanticismo e Illuminismo hanno avuto nelle sue opere, il primo capitolo esamina la posizione de La Sposa di Lammermoor all'interno del ciclo dei Waverley Novels, e soprattutto le peculiarità che lo contraddistinguono dai suoi compagni. Il capitolo seguente analizza l’opinione e l'uso che Scott fa del genere Gotico, ed esplora dettagliatamente la componente gotica de La Sposa di Lammermoor, esaminandone i numerosi aspetti gotici e soprannaturali, e prestando particolare attenzione alla rappresentazione gotica dei suoi personaggi femminili estremamente potenti. Infine, dato che La Sposa di Lammermoor si presenta come un unicum per la sua forma e conclusione tragica, ma è al contempo caratterizzato da una trama secondaria sorprendentemente comica, l'ultimo capitolo della tesi esamina l’intrecciarsi di questi due stili opposti e analizza i personaggi di Edgar Ravenswood, Lucy Ashton e Caleb Balderstone in chiave donchisciottesca, evidenziandone rispettivamente la dimensione tragica e tragicomica. In this dissertation I explore the relative roles of cognition and culture play as the foundations of religious and supernatural belief. On the cognitive side, theories of religion have postulated several cognitive biases that predispose human minds towards supernatural belief. However, to this date, very little empirical evidence exists to show how these hypotheses preform in predicting actual religious beliefs. I explore these biases and how they interrelate to support supernatural beliefs using individual difference measures across several large samples from Canada, the US, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. On the cultural side, I look at how different theories of secularization and the CREDs theory of cultural learning support supernatural belief and religious practice. I compare these effects of culture to the effects of cognition and find that cognitive biases support supernatural belief generally, but these effects are stronger for paranormal beliefs than religious ones and are almost non-existence for religious practice. Religious belief and practice are largely supported by social and cultural factors. Finally, I compare religious and non-religious participants to spiritual but not religious (SBNR) participants to further break down the differences between religious and non-religious supernatural beliefs and religious practice. I find that the SBNR are more like the religious than the non-religious but can still be identified as a unique group in terms of cognition and culture.Arts, Faculty of

Natural phenomena and natural disasters occur across the regions of the United States. While science now provides factual documentation for causes of meteorological and geological events, most Native American tribes lacked scientific explanations of these occurrences. Native Americans, however, sought to explain the effects and often devastation resulting from meteorological and geological events in some manner. The religions and mythologies of many cultures provide explanations for the occurrence of natural phenomena through supernatural intervention. The presentation of myths by geographic region provided the basis for analysis of explanations for natural phenomena. Regional analysis of myths suggests that commonalities exist among Native American Groups experiencing similar meteorological and geological events. Furthermore, common themes span across regional boundaries. For example, the use of a Thunderbird, a large bird with glowing eyes, as an explanation for the occurrence of thunder and storms occurs in every region of the United States. Another common theme is the use of a storm by a supernatural force as punishment for unacceptable behaviors of the earth's inhabitants. The most frequent example of this is the theme of a flood that destroys many inhabitants at some point in the history of the tribe. Often, storms and other natural phenomena have explanations based in the creation myth of the tribe. Another theme in myths regarding natural phenomena is the resolution of opposing forces. In many myths, the opposition exists between humans and nature, weather beings or spirits, or animals and nature. Myths regarding natural phenomena occasionally contain the attempt by humans or animals to gain control over nature or natural elements. The results of this control vary from favorable to unfavorable for those involved. A final theme exhibited in many myths is the function of a supernatural force associated with weather as a guardian, protector, and provider. The belief in these guardians provides Native Americans with assurance that they will be protected, and provided for, especially in times of natural disasters or storms. Research indicates that compilation of myths regarding natural phenomena facilitates regional and cross-cultural analysis and understanding of the role of supernatural intervention in Native American comprehension of natural phenomena.Department of Anthropology

The aim of the study is to move away from the antiquarian bias of previous work on the folklore of the supernatural in order to shed light on present day attitudes and concepts. In the past, folkiorists have done very little to collect their own culture, or even to recognise its forms. This has been particularly true of British work on ghost traciitions - the tendency of all but a very few scholars has 'been to retire to the library and compile collections of legends. The present study eschews this approach in favour of fieldwork. There are three main aspects of the work. The early chapters provide a resume of texts on the supernatural, from 1572 to the present day, seeking (i) to construct a cultural history of the concept of the ghost, and (ii) to evaluate the usefulness of these texts to the folklorist or historian of ideas. The central part of the thesis concentrates on presenting a picture of contemporary supernatural beliefs, drawing on data collected in informal interviews with 120 mainly elderly people resident in Gatley, a suburb of Manchester. Two central concepts are analysed - that is, ideas about ghosts, and about knowledge of the future. A third chapter describes miscellaneous beliefs (telepathy, UFOs, 'Luck', and mediumistic powers). In the later chapters attention is drawn to the manner of the storytelling through which these beliefs are expressed. The structure of inemorate is discussed. with particular reference to the Labovian model of personal experience stories. Finally the performative style of the storyteller is analysed in detail to show the basic linguistic resources a storyteller may call upon when structuring private experience into public narrative.

Making use of both published treatises and archival documents, this dissertation explains the reasons for the birth of a new concept of miracle in early modern canonisation trials held in Papal Rome. From the twelfth century, Catholic tradition had long defined a miracle as an event exceeding the whole of the order of nature, which meant both the visible and corporeal as well as the invisible and spiritual order. However, during the seventeenth century, Aristotelian physics was replaced by a new way of investigating nature, focused on mathematics as a method of inquiry, on mechanical explanations and on a new idea of matter based on corpuscular philosophy and atomism. This led to a new idea of nature. In the canonisation process, alleged miracles were assessed by a committee, who engaged medical experts with the role of evaluating any possibility that the events had natural causes. Between the end of seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, Roman physicians largely employed mechanical physics to investigate nature. This caused a short circuit: the new idea of nature implicit in the medical experts’ investigations did not coincide with the idea of nature from which the medieval definition of miracle had developed. As a result of his direct involvement in canonisation processes, Prospero Lambertini, Promoter of the Faith and future Pope Benedict XIV, became aware of this and adapted the definition of miracle to the new idea of nature. In addition, there was a perceived need to counteract atheists and deists who denied the existence of miracles. The modification of the concept of miracle reveals a deeper and radical change in the early modern world picture, in which the new boundaries of the natural led to the end of any dialectical relationship between the natural and the supernatural, condemning the latter to a blurred presence.

Each panelist has chosen an artifact (or type, genre, etc.) from the recent past and interrogated its role as an influence on contemporary popular culture, working to show the linkage between then and now. This type of work is underappreciated and we would like to attempt to show how informing ourselves on popular culture past can make us better critics in the present. Our hope is to inspire others to take up that cause as well. In that spirit, we would like to encourage people to come prepared to discuss ideas and share their own work in a workshop type environment.
