The critically endangered swift parrot (Lathamus discolor) is among the best studied Australian threatened species. Despite extensive outreach to the public and policy makers, conservation management has not kept pace with advances in knowledge and scientific evidence. Here we summarise policy and management failings that allow swift parrot breeding habitat in Tasmanian forests to continue to be logged. This practice continues in spite of extensive evidence demonstrating that the cessation of logging of swift parrot breeding habitat in Tasmania is urgently required to secure the species.

AbstractThis paper considers the problem of attitude and altitude control of quadrotors using the sliding mode control theory. The mathematical model of the quadrotor is derived using the Euler-Newton formalism. The sliding-mode is applied to the Parrot Mambo minidrone, which is a strong example of bringing educational robotics to formal (MATLAB, Python, JavaScript), non-formal (Tynker, Blockly, Swift Playground) and informal education. AbstractStrategies implemented by Jhpiego nationally and in 15 states of India to respond to the COVID- 19 emergency and to counter the devastating impact of the pandemic are discussed. By the time the nationwide lockdown was imposed in March, 2020, Jhpiego’s COVID-19 response strategy was in action. This strategy included strengthening the capacity of the health workforce, supporting the national and the state governments, and ensuring the continuation of essential health services including reproductive health services.Jhpiego mounted a swift multi-sectoral and multi-pronged program to provide technical support for enhancing the preparedness of the healthcare system across 15 states. Training and monitoring activities were conducted using virtual platforms. A decentralized approach was employed to co-design with the community local solutions for health problems. The thrust was on developing community-centered, community-owned, and community-driven programs. Digital technology, including tele-medicine and other innovative solutions, played a key part in these efforts. The program provided technical assistance for building a resilient healthcare system by strengthening governance mechanisms and facility-based preparedness, piloting an integrated disease surveillance system, enhancing the use of data to guide evidence-based decision-making, re-designing public health facilities, and setting-up rapid response teams which could be quickly mobilized to respond to crises.

There has been a transformation from individual work to team work in the last few decades (Ilgen, 1999), and many organizations use teams for many activities done by individuals in the past (Boyett & Conn, 1992; Katzenbach & Smith, 1993). The use of virtual teams has also become common particularly in international organizations and global companies. In light of this growing phenomenon, the traditional definition of “team structure” should be redefined, as part of the model that predicts the influence of the virtuallity and structural levels on processes, social, and tasks, that effect team output. A methodology will later be illustrated to examine the research model and a discussion of preliminary finding. The research contributes to better understanding of virtual teams in hope of improving the teams work in the virtual world. Virtual team design has so far been treated as an afterthought by virtual team researchers. Investigation of team structure in the virtual environment holds significant promise for research and practice (Powell, Piccoli, & Ives, 2004). Integration between virtual teams and structural characteristics raises the question: “Has the virtual era put an end to team structure?” Leavitt (1996) claims that the rapid changes impose organizations to relax structures. Hackman (2002), on the other hand, predicts that team structure will always exist and managers will continue to be bothered by team design.

Numerous communities of experts supported by firms tend nowadays to form an important part of corporate social capital. Composed of free will agents, those communities aim at creating knowledge through cognitive interactions and heavily rely on ICTs to free themselves from many constraints. Previous studies of such virtual groupings pointed out that their organization features were not similar to market nor hierarchy. Consequently, neither price nor contract or authority are used in such communities which rather seem to self-organize. Instead of traditional economic concepts, notions such as trust and leadership are advanced to explain the functioning of these virtual assemblies. This contribution proposed a tentative model which attempts to grasp some of the empirical aspects of these communities. More precisely, we were interested in the relation between trust, performance, and organizational feature within a given virtual group. Simulations of the model with different functions of swift trust display various organizational structures similar to those described by stylized facts. The organizational attributes range from pure collaborative communities to pure competitive ones. Intermediate cases also emerge with the appearance of leader(s).

This chapter’s aim will be to illustrate Joyce’s attempt to textualize his personal experience with illness, through the analysis of a very particular piece of writing, namely the fragment “Twilight of Blindness Madness Descends on Swift”. Placed at the border between private and public writing, the fragment reflects Joyce’s concerns at the time of its composition. Through the evocation of Swift, the fragment reflects an idea of madness as something implied by others as a consequence of fame, but also as a result of a physical exhaustion. In particular, an association in terms of siblings will emerge with which Joyce seems at once to acknowledge their points of resemblances but at the same time reflect the refusal of a complete identification: as this chapter shows, Joyce is projecting himself, or rather his illness, upon an Irish writer with whom he had many points of contact but who is other than him, possibly in the attempt to sublimate his sufferings through writing, reshaping them through the image of Swift’s legendary madness. And this chapter will argue that this fragment, even though never found any space in the final texts, it is nonetheless still part of the compositional process in a wider sense: it coincides with what John Nash has described as “a point of maximum exhaustion, of the materials but also of the writer himself”, which nonetheless represents “a restless point which ensured renewal”.

Consideration of these monuments, which include part of the Vatican museums, makes a fitting conclusion to the book, for, as Bianchini rightly insisted, historians ought not to omit the proofs and delights afforded by depiction of artifacts illustrative of the times they write about. The monuments described include tombs of Maria Clementina, Queen Christina, and Pope Alexander VIII in St Peters and testimonials to Bianchini in Rome and Verona. Among other actors exiting the scene, Wogan remained the most colorful; his later military adventures in Spanish service earned him the governorship of Don Quixote’s province of La Mancha and his literary productions attracted the attention and admiration of Jonathan Swift.

Despite the resolution in the Treaty of Westminster (1654), the Amboyna massacre became entrenched in English culture as a familiar cultural touchstone. Three further wars with the Dutch led to new Amboyna pamphlets. Amboyna also became part of internal political disputes in which Tories wrote Amboyna pamphlets to attack Whig rivals. In a wide-ranging exploration of multiple genres of popular and print culture, including plays, advice manuals, fiction, and library catalogues, this chapter analyzes the many ways in which Amboyna became domesticated in English culture. By the end of the seventeenth century it had shed its political significance as a symbol of ingratitude and instead became a consummate tale of cruelty. It also endured as a tale of unrequited injury. British authors such as Dryden, Defoe, and Swift were part of this process. By the end of the eighteenth century, with a final True Relation, it had become a legend.
