The development stages of male and female gonads in the freshwater crab Sylviocarcinus pictus (H. Milne Eduards, 1853) were described through macroscopic and microscopic (histology) examinations. The histological description was based on 40 specimens (20 each sex). Four gonadal development stages were found for females: immature, ripening, mature and spawned. The following female cells were found: ovogonia, oocytes in initial vitellogenesis, oocytes in advanced vitellogenesis, follicular cells and post-ovulatory follicles. New sampling programs have extended the distribution of three species of freshwater crabs (family Trichodactylidae): Dilocarcinus septemdentatus and Sylviocarcinus pictus from the Amazon basin to southern South America, and S. australis, from the north of Argentina southwards. The three species are now found in the floodplain of the middle Paraná River (31°39'S, 60°45'W). The extension of their distribution is approximately 500 km and 2000 km further south. The number of freshwater crab species in the alluvial valley of the Paraná River has increased by 30% with these new records.

The females of both species survived longer than the males and the females of D. pagei survived longer than the females of S. pictus. Water loss until death was on average 30.12 ± 11.79% for D. pagei and 42.59 ± 7.49% for S. pictus. The study was conducted at four collection sites distributed along the mouth of the Amazon River between the months of January/2009 and January/2010. The animals were caught using handcrafted traps called "matapi", which are used by prawn fisherman in the region. Twenty matapis were used at each collection site. AbstractSylviocarcinus pictus is a freshwater crab widely distributed across the Amazon basin and coastal basins of northern South America. In the Xingu River basin, Pará, Brazil, the species is found from its middle portion up to the confluence with the Amazon River. This extensive distribution led to questions about the influence of the Volta Grande do Xingu rapids on genetic diversification between populations above and below this area.
