Streszczenie:
This study is for looking into the aspects in discourse synthesis of advanced level Korean learners. Discourse synthesis is the behavior that produce one’s own text using other various texts. For advanced level learners, the competence that comprehend other’s text critically and incorporate those texts to writer’s own knowledge becomes important in writing, and so it is necessary to look into how the learners are doing in discourse synthesis. 9 advanced level learners participated in discourse synthesis activities, and the texts they produced were analysed. As a result, they used various information from input texts to achieve the writing goal, ‘comparison’. But they failed to compare two objects in balance, because they did not do well on exception the unbalanced informations or filling the deficient informations based on their own background knowledge. And most of them could not describe cohesively, they just enumerated the information from input texts. These results means that advanced learners can do well on selecting the information they need for the writing purpose, but they lacks in using knowledge synthesis skills.

The article discusses innovations in the audiovisual translation of texts with academic terms. The modern world does not stand still as new technologies emerge that make it possible to create a large amount of audiovisual content. Every year, there are many recent films, TV series, and cartoons in foreign languages that require translation. As a result, audiovisual translation is becoming ever more relevant for research. Our paper aims to identify the main features of audiovisual translation as a particular type of translation activity. The research objective is the process of audiovisual translation as a special type of translation activity. The subject of the study pertains to features of subtitling as a type of audiovisual translation. The theoretical basis of the research consists of the works of scientists in the field of cultural studies (L.G. Dunyasheva, J. Mitri, etc.), semiotics (R. Barth, Y.M. Lotman, U. Eco), discursive linguistics (N. D. Arutyunova, T. van Dyck, M.L. Makarov, O.A. Radchenko, etc.), translation studies (V.S. Vinogradova, T.A. Volkova, V.N. “Mainline” Japanese Protestantism is a young, minority faith whose future seems as uncertain as the future of the Jesus movement must have seemed in second century Rome. In contrast to the dominant family- and community-based Shinto-Buddhist religious synthesis, Japanese Protestantism is an individualistic, middle-class, urban phenomenon. The early samurai leaders of this movement, heirs of a Confucian tradition that stressed the careful study of texts, broke with the missionaries over modernist developments in theology and science. Their descendents have continued to focus on translated western theological texts to the neglect of local missional issues or engagement in ecumenical dialogue.

Streszczenie:
The aim of the article was to study the specifics of the interfaces of the U.S. university websites as multimodal heterogeneous texts that synthesize elements of educational, scientific and advertising discourses. The overall objectives to achieve the established goal were as follows: to identify and distinguish the types of multimodal means on the U.S. university website, which contribute to its genre mixing and genre embedding; to establish the nature of the interaction of verbal, non-verbal and para-verbal components of the U.S. university websites, and to determine their pragmatic features. The methodological basis of the research was a complex of the following methods: analysis (to study multimodal components of the university website as a specific multimodal text), synthesis (to identify the features of the integration of multimodal means of the websites of American universities), observation (for the selection of fragments with verbal means that actualize the visual content and the selection of visual fragments to actualize the verbal content), the method of discourse analysis (to highlight specific fragments of websites that arouse the interest of the authors of this articleб and have a meaningful content), structural method (to analyze the university website as a whole structure, which is provided by separate means of cohesion), functional method (to clarify the pragmatic potential of multimodal elements of the university website, which are means of communication between the university and the reader of its website). It also employed the system functional (drawing on the provisions of linguistic metafunctions, and focusing on the categories of the grammar of visual design) and the socio-semiotic (grounding on the interrelationship of modes, their compatibility and social needs for which they serve, making meanings) approaches. The chosen methodology made it possible to conduct a study of the multimodality of the websites of the U.S. universities, realized as a symbiosis of verbal, non-verbal and paraverbal resources. The multimedia corpus of the research consists of the websites of five American universities (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, Yale University and Рrinceton University). The main conclusion that can be drawn is that the complex discursive nature of the websites under study is determined by the features inherent in advertising (the benefits of services to influence the choice of the recipient), educational (the talk about the educational process and educational services) and scientific (information of a scientific nature is provided) discourses. All universities under study employ semiotic landscapes at their disposal to portray attractive brands on their websites. Being the most important way to ensure fast and effective communication of educational institutions with their target audience, the discourse of university websites has a pronounced pragmatic orientation. The purpose of the analyzed type of heterogeneous discourse is to create an image of an “ideal” educational institution, attract potential students, researchers, sponsors, and disseminate the latest achievements in the field of science and education. The concept of multimodality of the websites of the analyzed U.S. universities as specific multimodal texts is manifested in visual content through a number of paragraphemic and infographic elements, the synthesis of which is due to the combination of language tools, visual content and web technologies of modern website construction. The most common visual content exploited on the U.S. university websites embraces: unique photographs and “color” mode (photos of the university and its students, classrooms, laboratories, events, etc.), which helps to clearly illustrate the educational services offered, and give the desired emotional mood; infographics and data visualization, which is an effective way to combine text, pictures and design to present complex information (infographics do not always completely replace the text, more often it is its addition or retelling); video interviews with students, graduates, videos about studying at a university are one of the means to convince potential students to make an admission decision. Using video is a fairly popular form of visual content. With the help of video, the universities can not only diversify the content of their websites, but also satisfy the needs of those users who prefer visual content. Placing various videos on website pages allows solving the problems of reinforcing textual content, strengthening the arguments “for” admission and attracting applicants to university educational programs. In such a way, on the basis of the interaction of different discourses (advertising, educational and scientific) and various semiotic systems, a single visual-structural and functionally complete image of an attractive and popular university is achieved among readers of its website.

This article conducts culturological analysis of the diversity of intercultural communications in Russian culture of the early XX century. Cultural space as the text of culture of that time is characterized by a transitional state, synthetic and dialogical focus. The phenomenon of Russian culture consist in the intelligentsia represented by the cultural figures of the Silver Age and avant-garde, who have creative way of thinking and propensity for new achievements in art. The object of this research is the “textuality"”of Russian cultural space of the early XX century, which is comprised of a range of texts and semiotic systems. The subject is the creative minds interpreting as the text of personality. The leading theme became the determination of interaction and mutual influence of the phenomena of culture, dialogue between creative minds, interested in the problems of synthesis of arts, within the cultural-textual space. The novelty of this work is defined by insufficient coverage in culturology of the problem of interrelation between creative personality and text in culture of the Silver Age and the avant-garde. It is established that the cultural space of Russian avant-garde can be viewed as a “meta-semiotic formation”, which includes texts and “metatext”. Personality of the cultural figure as the foundation for classification of texts is referred to as “metatext”. Classification of texts consists of the verbal text (theoretical and literary texts, literature, epistolary) and nonverbal text (texts of behavior, everyday life, era). Literary texts of the cultural figures of the Silver Age contain texts of the works of art: painting, musical, poetic, prosaic, as well as critical reviews on art, manifestos, and others. Nonverbal texts include theatricalization of behavior, creative life, and mythologization of personality, which form the identification code of creative personality of the Silver Age that gravitates towards the synthesis of arts. It is determined that the period of development of Russian cultural space of Russia of the early XX century is characterized by such peculiarities as:  synthetical nature, innovation of artistic language that consists of visual, verbal and audial texts on the basis of synthesis of painting, poetry and music.

This inquiry aims to determine the ways and means through which the accuracy category manifests itself in the news genre and to identify internal contradictions formed by the interaction between logical and semantic components of the expression. The objectives were as follows: to determine how the accuracy category is presented through the categories of subject, time, and place of action, what are the transformative possibilities of these categories in the field of adequate transmission of meaning, which linguistic means actualize the accuracy category or, on the contrary, “blur” it. Continuous sampling, analysis and synthesis, transformational, and descriptive methods were used in the research process. We confirm that the subject in the headline is delivered explicitly and implicitly in the conclusions presenting the research results. “Nonsubjectivity” is realized using indefinite (non-personal) forms of the predicate or can be determined through a locus. For news headlines, the locus is an essential component, its place in the sentence can adjust the semantic accents of the statement. The time category in analyzed titles is almost always explicit. The accuracy category is most clearly manifested in direct indications of time and place and in two-syllable sentences where the subject of the action is specified.

Qualitative evidence syntheses (QES) have increased in prominence and profile over the last decade as a discrete set of methodologies to undertake systematic reviews of primary qualitative research in health and social care and in education. The findings from a qualitative evidence synthesis can enable a richer interpretation of a particular phenomenon, set of circumstances, or experiences than single primary qualitative research studies can achieve. Qualitative evidence synthesis methods were developed in response to an increasing demand from health and social professionals, policy makers, guideline developers and educationalists for review evidence that goes beyond “what works” afforded by systematic reviews of effectiveness. The increasing interest in the synthesis of qualitative research has led to methodological developments documented across a plethora of texts and journal articles. This “State of the Method” paper aims to bring together these methodological developments in one place, contextualizing advances in methods with exemplars to support readers in making choices in approach to a synthesis and aid understanding. The paper clarifies what a “qualitative evidence synthesis” is and explores its role, purpose and development. It details the kind of questions a QES can explore, the processes associated with a QES, including the methods for synthesis. The rational and methods for integrating a QES with systematic reviews of effectiveness are also detailed. Finally approaches reporting and recognition of what a “good” or rigorous QES look like are provided.

The article aims to present the typology of texts to be studied in the course of French as a foreign language. The relevance of the research is due to the insufficient development of a general typology of texts, the variability of the composition of typologies offered by French-speaking linguists and methodologists, as well as the terminological disorder of the names of the types of texts included in them. The article deals with the main typologies of texts, developed in French linguistics, then with the typologies based on them, used in French lingua-didactics. Then a personal structural and pragmatic typology of texts in French, containing 13 types of texts with their main characteristics and a number of examples, is presented. The methods of observation, comparison, description, interpretation, analysis, synthesis and typology were used in the study. The practical value of the study lies in the possibility of applying the developed typology of texts in teaching French as a foreign language at different levels and stages of learning.

Materials science text mining (MSTM), involving tasks like property extraction and synthesis action retrieval, is pivotal for advancing research by deriving critical insights from scientific literature. Descriptors, serving as essential task labels, often vary in meaning depending on researchers' usage purposes across different mining tasks. (e.g., 'Material' can refer to both synthesis components and participants in fuel cell experiment). This meaning difference makes it difficult for existing methods, fine-tuned to specific task, to handle the same descriptors in other tasks. To overcome above limitation, we propose MatDuck, a simple and effective approach for Zero-Shot MSTM by evoking material knowledge within Large Language Models (LLMs). Specifically, inspired by the Duck Typing principles in programming languages, we present a ClassDefinition-Style Descriptor generation method that evokes task-specific characteristics to address usage variation. Subsequently, we introduce code-style in-context learning for zero-shot tasks, reframing them into code to leverage LLMs' proficiency in code understanding. Extensive experiments on eight benchmark datasets demonstrate that MatDuck, as a plug-and-play approach, significantly improves the Zero-Shot MSTM performance of LLMs by an average of 11.3% across seven tasks.

AbstractText-to-speech systems are currently designed to work on complete sentences and paragraphs, thereby allowing front end processors access to large amounts of linguistic context. Problems with this design arise when applications require text to be synthesized in near real time, as it is being typed. How does the system decide which incoming words should be collected and synthesized as a group when prior and subsequent word groups are unknown? We describe a rule-based parser that uses a three cell buffer and phrasing rules to identify break points for incoming text. Words up to the break point are synthesized as new text is moved into the buffer; no hierarchical structure is built beyond the lexical level. The parser was developed for use in a system that synthesizes written telecommunications by Deaf and hard of hearing people. These are texts written entirely in upper case, with little or no punctuation, and using a nonstandard variety of English (e.g. WHEN DO I WILL CALL BACK YOU). The parser performed well in a three month field trial utilizing tens of thousands of texts. Laboratory tests indicate that the parser exhibited a low error rate when compared with a human reader.

Despite the fact that there are many different nations and languages, it is possible to speak about the uniformity of human beginnings in the world since the beginning of time. Not just similar to each other, but common both in external form and content are the configurations of human cognition, understanding of the world and their place in it, their relationships with each other, universal values. Nevertheless, the people living in each continent or climatic zone have their own unique customs and traditions, ways of thinking and language, depending on their way of life, economy, religious beliefs, economy and culture. Translation work is the most unique form of creative activity of the human mind, aimed at gathering and uniting this seemingly unrelated diversity, establishing contact and the possibility of communication between cultures. Based on the established system of views and concepts in literary studies and linguistics, cultural studies and philosophy, the article presents a detailed analysis of the level of study of translation as an urgent problem of science, art and philosophy, as well as provides an overview of the history, theory and practice of translation, its place in world culture. The experience of translating scientific literature and philosophical texts from world languages into Russian and Kazakh languages is analyzed, its connection with actual problems of modern society is studied, including the influence of translation on the implementation of synthesis and intercultural dialogue, on the development of science and philosophy. The paper evaluates the originality of the philosophical approach to the phenomenon of translation.

This article focuses specifically on George McCall Theal’s collection of folktale texts, Kaffir Folklore (1882), as an example of an early South African ethnographic publication, and argues that the folktale transcriptions contained therein, although a part of Theal’s general colonialist project, are hybrid, containing the voices of both coloniser and colonised. The key argument is that the presence of the African voices in this text reveals simultaneously that Theal’s editorial aspirations were never absolutely imposed, and that agency and influence (albeit limited) of the colonised Xhosa co-authors were present. The article offers an analysis of the paratext (the preface, the introduction and the explanatory notes) of Kaffir Folkore, rather than a close reading of the tales themselves. To facilitate an understanding of Theal’s editorial practice, Kaffir Folkore is compared to Harold Scheub’s The Xhosa Ntsomi (1975). More generally, drawing on postcolonial folklore and book-history scholarship, the article explores how folklore texts of the colonial era, although contributing to the establishment of a literary and cultural orthodoxy in modern South Africa, constitute a telling hybrid genre, which invites a re-evaluation of colonial relations, and of individual texts themselves. In short, these texts synthesise different literary traditions (European and African), different mediums (the oral and the written), different disciplinary approaches (ethnography, folklore, literature), and most significantly, the voices of different subjects. Kaffir Folklore (1882) epitomises this synthesis.

This paper aims to perform a qualitative synthesis of literature concerning the representation of information in displaced archives. Methodologically, this communication is configured in a metasynthesis oriented to theory building, constituting a non-reactive, documentary-based and exploratory type of study, focused on articles and books chapters published in English between 1954 and 2019. The collection of texts is supported by the SPICE strategy, applied to the search in databases (WoS and EBSCO). We adopted content analysis according to the assumptions of Charmaz and Finfgeld-Connett. Of the 443 records, 155 texts that responded to the research purposes were included. Three themes emerged from the content analysis around the aforementioned theme with a view to theory building: “anarchivism as (non-) representation”, “archive of the archive”, and “archival canon”. Finally, displaced archives constitute an emerging theme in several domains, so it is important to explore the complex nature of this phenomenon from the point of view of representation and knowledge organization.

A synthesis of factual and fictional discourses arises in these texts that represent not only the identity transformations of the Indian Spanish individual but also the emerging local, creole subjectivity that defines the new culture and its relations with indigenous world. We suggest a first stage in this cultural synthesis that includes two texts that have not been addressed literary and historiographic studies: Naufragios [1542] by Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca and Infortunios de Alonso Ramírez [1690] by Carlos de Sigüenza. These two founding narratives used a factual discourse that masked the fictional strategies that were later included in the textual practices that characterize the literatures of the Americas.

Objective: To understand the performance of EndNote 20 and Zotero 6’s full text retrieval features. Methods: Using the University of York’s subscriptions, we tested and compared EndNote and Zotero’s full text retrieval. 1,000 records from four evidence synthesis projects were tested for the number of: full texts retrieved; available full texts retrieved; unique full texts (found by one program only); and differences in versions of full texts for the same record. We also tested the time taken and accuracy of retrieved full texts. One dataset was tested multiple times to confirm if the number of full texts retrieved was consistent. We also investigated the available full texts missed by EndNote or Zotero by: reference type; whether full texts were available open access or via subscription; and the content provider. Results: EndNote retrieved 47% of available full texts versus 52% by Zotero. Zotero was faster by 2 minutes 15 seconds. Each program found unique full texts. There were differences in full text versions retrieved between programs. For both programs, 99% of the retrieved full texts were accurate. Zotero was less consistent in the number of full texts it retrieved. Conclusion: EndNote and Zotero do not find all available full texts. Users should not assume full texts are correct; are the version of record; or that records without full texts cannot be retrieved manually. Repeating the full text retrieval process multiple times could yield additional full texts. Users with access to EndNote and Zotero could use both for full text retrieval.

This article carries out a culturological analysis of the artistic worldview of the poet, artist, art historian, and art critic Maximilian Voloshin (1877–1932) – one of the prominent representatives of the Silver Age. The object of this research is the diversity of artistic space of M. Voloshin, while the subject is the interinfluence of his literary texts. The author aims to determine the symbolic-anthroposophic intentions in the artistic space of M. Voloshin as a complex semiotic formation that comprises the continuum of various texts: visual, verbal, nonverbal, and others. Maximilam Voloshin’s reasoning on the symbolic nature are reflected in his theoretical works and correspondence with cultural figures. In his articles, Voloshin advanced the idea that the artist refers to the spatial form of art by means intuition and inner consciousness. The poem “Rouen Cathedral” by M. Voloshin is vivid example of the synthesis of poetic and picturesque texts. M. Voloshin’s engagement in construction of the Goetheanum in Dornach headed by the German anthroposophist R. Steiner contributed to the development of the new worldview, which is reflected in the original watercolor “Dornach Album”. The novelty of this research lies in the fact that the personality of M. Voloshin is presented as a metatext, complex semiotic space that intertwined visual (iconic), verbal and other texts that embody the symbolic and anthroposophic intentions. It is established that the use of symbolic and anthroposophic intentions by M. Voloshin, as well as the synthesis of visual, verbal and other texts, characterize the diversity and synthetism of his worldview, although he did not fully apprehended the views of the symbolists and anthroposophists. All these principles formed the artistic space of M. Voloshin as metatext in a single guise – poet, artist, and philosopher.

This article describes a set of “textual” technological practices that have been emerging over the past decade in the work of underground electroacoustic and computer music composers, focusing particularly on Florian Hecker and Russell Haswell. Guided by methodological insights from the field of software studies, the article zooms in on two computer programs, PulsarGenerator and GENDYN, presenting a genealogical analysis of them as cultural objects and outlining how these lines of descent are aestheticized in their works. In the hands of these artists, sound synthesis procedures carry an author function, and this transgresses both their legal status as technological “inventions” rather than texts, as well as their ontological status in the electroacoustic music genre. Combined with a compositional focus on “sounding” the materiality of these technologies—the particular affordances, limitations, and quirks of their operative functioning—this textual practice contributes to a new aesthetic, one that challenges the prevailing logic of secrecy, alchemy, and semblance in this music. Using the notion of “ontological politics” inherited from science and technology studies, I show how these practices highlight zones of contestation over electroacoustic music’s ontology.

Beside the existence of this connection very little has been done to explore it and even the direction of the influence is still open to question. This connection will be thoroughly analyzed here, in order to appreciate fully its importance for understanding the purpose of the fragmentary individual texts and the applied editing practices. It will be shown that 4QAdmonition on the Flood was one of the main sources used in the composition of 4QSapiential Admonitions B that was radically edited (e. g., additions, omissions and recontextualizing) and combined with Proverbial wisdom traditions. The purpose of this editorial activity was to create a synthesis out of the more traditional wisdom thinking and the Torah-oriented deuteronomic parenesis, as was also done by, for example, Ben Sira in his own wisdom composition around the same time period.

The article presents the results of the analytical work with the verbal texts of modern foreign prosaists, poets and Johann Sebastian Bach’s music texts. Inn the opinion of the authors of the research, through centuries, works by Bach inspire representatives of different branches of art to look for new instruments for achieving intermediavity of art works and a high level of its synesthesia. One of the basic categories in the context of synthesis of arts is “musicality” as a reflection of the processes of using traditional music instruments and techniques while creating literary texts. Bach’s works themselves turn out to be a very important step in the development of the tradition of literary-music synthesis - Bach used the means, firstly, of musical rhetoric baroque to gain such synthesis. An even more interesting fact is that the very heritage of Bach appeared to be one of the most popular “objects” of musical-ization of the literary text. In the analyzed works of William Coales, Gabriel Josipovici, Richard Powers, Thomas Bernhard, George Tabori, Dieter Thomas Kuhn, Nancy Huston, Anna Enquist, the authors of the article discover Bach’s forebasis, a kind of an urtext, that allows considering the mentioned literary texts to be a highly representative material for solving the problems of the synthetic character of the art culture of the 21st century that indeed requires a deep reflection. Among the results of today’s exponential development of electronic technologies, there exists one important factor in the realization of art peoples’ centuries-old expectations - the forming of the possibility for the emergence (rather massive already) ofworks of art whose creation would involve different types and art forms. On the one hand, this factor makes it necessary to analyze the historical perspective, the evolution of the methods and models of synthesis of arts some authors create; on the other, however paradoxical it may seem, it seems to give a new impulse to experiments of writers, musicians, artists, who try, even remaining in general within the “traditional” boundaries of the types of their art (literature, music, art consequently), to actively use artistic means traditional for these types of art for achieving the effect of crossing the boundaries of “only” literature, music or art. This trend seems to be particularly noticeable in modern European literature. The aim of the given article is to identify the specific instruments of modern foreign prosaists who choose Bach’s music texts as the urtexts of their literary works. The authors declare no conflicts of interests.

Chemical synthesis is suitable when bulk quantities of the polymer are needed and up to date it presents dominant commercial method of producing electroconducting polymers. Nevertheless, electrochemical synthesis has its advantages; it avoids usage of oxidants since conducting polymeric material is obtained at anode upon application of positive potential, leading to increased purity. On the other hand, since the polymer is deposited onto electrode, further electrochemical characterization is facilitated. Owing to actuality of the research in the field this texts aims to describe important aspects of electrochemical synthesis of electroconducting polymers, with special emphasis to polyaniline and polypyrrole.

The research aimed at identifying approaches for building a bilingual individual through written an academic text, using five text types for achieving this goal. The analysis of text types used in this study were glossed, bilingual, dictionary assisted text, authentic, task-based text that reveals valuable insights into their effectiveness and areas for improvement in language learning. After engaging with the texts, they wrote annotations and reviews. The study showed the following results: The glossed text approach has demonstrated significant effectiveness in enhancing comprehension, however, challenges remain in providing detailed examples, crafting comprehensive conclusions, ensuring precise grammar. Working with bilingual texts students could identify the main ideas and use vocabulary correctly, but, their texts often lacked depth in argumentation and critical analysis. Using dictionary was helpful for understanding vocabulary and grammar, it was less effective for in-depth text analysis and synthesis. Authentic texts provided exposure to real-world language but also posed difficulties that require targeted instructional strategies. Task-based texts, while engaging, highlighted areas where students need more focused support. The experiment involved fifteen first-year philology students, aged 19 to 20, from a higher educational institution who were learning Russian as a foreign language, with Kazakh as their first language (L1).

The article deals with the principles of compiling the “German-Ukrainian Dictionary of Terminology of Life Safety” and selection pecularities of the lexical material such as the principles of compliance with the goals and objectives of learning, frequency, word-forming value of the term, associative value, subjectivity and semantics. Compilation of the dictionary involves many stages: analysis of existing dictionaries, research of the needs of the addressee, determination of requirements and future characteristics of the dictionary, development of its macro- and microstructure, collection of lexical material, design of dictionary articles, selection of translation equivalents, ordering of the dictionary in accordance with the developed structure, editing, checking the compliance of the received product with the set goals. The author offers the most productive and speed methods of compiling a dictionary with the help of BootCat generation program and Morphy program of paradigms synthesis, which allowed to single out 20,000 terms of the professional language of life safety in the shortest time and find their Ukrainian equivalents. The generation of a body of texts is carried out with S. Sharoff’s method, which provides the search for professional texts with the help of randomly combined four basic terms. This ensures the organization of a homogeneous selection of thematically related texts from the Internet (manuals, reference books, scientific articles, newspaper reports, instructions, sights, abstracts and annotations of articles, etc.). The obtained texts are processed with the help of the Morphy paradigm synthesis program, which automatically assigns all possible grammatical categories to each word in the sentence, and compiles the initial list of terminological dictionary. The next task is to provide equivalent words in the language of translation, able to accurately convey the semantics of the register word. Consequently, in the hands of the user of the dictionary, there is a certain linguistic model of the German professional language of life safety in its equivalent reproduction in the Ukrainian language. The presence of such an initial model will allow the user to perceive adequately scientific texts and, thus, successfully expand their scientific and conceptual apparatus in the future. This study investigated 4 developing readers' processing of text by asking them to think aloud as they read 5 narratives and 5 expository texts over the course of a school year. Five general categories of processing were identified: paraphrasing, questioning, elaborating, hypothesizing, and monitoring. The reading of narratives was compared to the reading of expository texts. While reading narratives, students hypothesized a greater percentage of the time, and while reading expository texts, they elaborated a greater percentage of the time. When reading narratives, students made more inferences, predictions, and interpretations, which seemed to be based on a developing synthesis and integration of incoming text information. When reading expository texts, students focused more on personal knowledge and experiences, providing commentary about or creating comparisons in response to details and more local text information. Students were also asked to provide a summary. Student summaries differed by genre, with narrative summaries including a greater percentage of important ideas than the summaries of expository texts which, like the students' on-line processing, focused more on local text information.

This article examines the predicative organization of English (ENA) and German-language (GNA) national anthems. Our aim is to explore the cognitive-communicative mapping strategies employed in these anthems through three predicative networks shaped by subcategories of modality, temporality, and personality. This objective is supported by specific tasks, such as describing the current state of the problem in the humanities and clarifying the modal, temporal, and personal features of the studied texts. These features determine the predicative algorithm for their function in public communication. The research methodology is based on a paradigmatic cognitive-discursive approach, considering language and speech phenomena through the philosophical postulates of induction and deduction, analysis and synthesis, form and content. This involves the comprehensive application of relevant linguistic methods (analytical-descriptive, structural semantic, functional grammatical, pragmalinguistic), techniques (classification, systematization), and procedures (contextual analysis, quantitative calculations). The category of predicativeness, which correlates linguistic units with reality, binds nominative units into sentences and sentences into cohesive texts. In the texts of ENA/GNA, this process is mediated by three predicative networks: modal, temporal, and personal, with the modal network serving as the foundation for the other two. The organization of the modal network in the studied texts is characterized by several common qualitative and quantitative features. The indicative and imperative moods are almost equally represented, whereas the conditional mood is underrepresented. Unlike other types of small-format poetic texts, the imperative becomes a mandatory mode in the texts of ENA and GNA. Both ENA and GNA exhibit similar patterns of temporality, focusing on connecting the present with the future while avoiding any reference to the past. The present tense serves as the central link in the temporal network of these texts, emphasizing the moment of speech and extending its influence into the future, thus becoming a panchronic temporal form. The study highlights that the individual networks of ENA and GNA texts are shaped by the specific use of personal deixis within direct (1st and 2nd person) and indirect (3rd person) registers. The third person is predominantly used, while the first person is the least common. The latter often appears implicitly, relating to the “target reader” of the text, who remains in the background of the speech processes. The established paradigm of predicative forms in the texts is found to be incomplete, influenced by factors such as neglect, diffusion, and dominance. In the modal network, the neglect of certain grammatical forms in favor of others results from the asymmetric reduction of three forms of objective modality to two (indicative and imperative). In the temporal network, the present tense extends into the future, leading to an indifferent attitude toward past temporal forms. In the personal network, the role of the third person is elevated, while the significance of direct register persons is diminished. The predicative system of ENA/GNA texts demonstrates the diffusion of grammatical forms, integrating rare conditional forms into the imperative sphere to express wishes and requests. Additionally, there is a symbiosis of temporal perspectives of the present and future, forming a panchronic whole. Furthermore, the interchange of the third and second persons occurs in appeals. The paradigm’s incompleteness is also influenced by the quantitative dominance of certain forms over others. In the modal network, indicative and imperative forms are predominant. In the temporal network, present tense forms prevail. In the personal network, the third person is dominant. The paper proves that the established paradigm of predicative forms in the studied texts is incomplete and asymmetrically distorted. This is caused by a number of factors: reduced number of conventional grammatical means, the syntagmatic diffusion of certain grammatical forms (the use of the conditional mood instead of the imperative), the quantitative dominance of certain grammatical forms, etc. The grammatical lacunarity of predicative forms paradigm is an inherent property of ENA / GNA texts, one of system parameters that distinguishes them from other small-format versed texts of political lyrics.

The article considers the pragmatic possibilities of the creolized texts of the yearbooks of the Italian Army. The author analyzes eleven yearbooks and about two hundred creolized texts for the period from 2010 to 2021. The object of the research is the yearbooks of the Army with creolized content. The subject of the research is the verbal and iconic components of the yearbooks' texts. The main purpose of the study is to identify the pragmatic functions of verbal and iconic components of the text of military yearbooks, reflecting the main values of society. The author considers the text of military yearbooks from the position of the speech acts theory and analyzes the locutionary and illocutionary levels in order to draw a conclusion about the perlocutionary level, namely, whether the author achieves a perlocutionary effect and with the help of what verbal and iconic means there is a change in the consciousness and feelings of the addressee. The methodological basis of the study are the works on linguopragmatics, the theory of polycode, creolized text and multimodal text. The research methods include: the method of continuous sampling, lexical analysis, comparison and synthesis of the analysis results. The scientific novelty of the research is the first time study of the Italian creolized text in the military sublanguage. The material of the study, printed yearbooks of the Italian Army, haven't been subjected to analysis before. The linguopragmatic analysis of research material allowed us to study the content and semantic integrity of the creolized text and the synthesis provided us with conclusions about the pragmatic function of its semiotically heterogeneous components. Although iconic and verbal components don't perform the function of image creation themselves, the distribution of pragmatic functions between the message and the picture contributes to the positive image of the Italian Army.

ntroduction. The presence of the requi-?ements of modern society to the secondary school graduate determines the modernization of education, in particular its content. One of the current principles of studying the Ukrainian language today is a text-centric approach. The essence of text-centrism is to use texts as illustrative material in the study of language topics. In the texts selection, teachers prefer artistic samples. But diale-?t texts - records of living folk speech can also be used as a learning resource. The purpose of the article is to prove the expediency of using dialect texts as an educational resource in Ukrainian language lessons; to publish some examples of living folk speech, recorded by the author in East Polesian dialects, which can be used in the teaching and education of high school students. The following methods were used in the study: analysis, synthesis, abstraction, analogy, generalization, as well as the method of continuous sampling. The main results of the study. Complex tasks, made on a text basis, allow developing not only language and speech knowledge and skills of students, but also the ability to formulate their own statements, as well as to satisfy the cognitive interests of students. Dialect texts contain rich linguistic material, so their use allows you to master the language at all levels of the language system. Acquaintance with samples of folk speeches promotes the prestige of proficiency in the Ukrainian language. Through dialect texts, students get acquainted with the world picture of Ukrainians, their customs, traditions, spiritual and material culture, folk life. All this forms the ethnic consciousness of high school students. Originality. The article raises the issue of the use of dialect texts in the study of the Ukrainian language for the first time and publishes samples of dialect discourse recorded in East Polesian dialects. Conclusions and author’s specific suggestions. The use of dialect texts contributes to the development of language and speech competence of students, as well as general cultural and national education of high school students. The didactic and information potential of dialect texts is very large, so they can be used in the study of other subjects (Ukrainian literature, history of Ukraine, biology, geography, etc.).

Despite the recognized importance of text adaptation for effective language learning, systematic re-search and established methods in Kazakh linguistics are notably lacking. While some scholars advocate for developing simplified texts to support learners, there is a deficiency of comprehensive guidelines and tools for this purpose, leading to inconsistent practices and outcomes. This research aims to highlight the significance of using adapted texts in foreign language teaching through a systematic literature review. Following this, the study identifies key trends and methods in text adaptation, focusing specifically on the text simplification model. Due to the scarcity of in-depth studies on Kazakh text adaptation, the re-search employs synthesis and analysis methods to apply learned adaptation techniques to Kazakh texts. The practical part of the study involves adapting publicistic and scientific authentic text in Kazakh using the text simplification model. This process is detailed to illustrate how adaptation techniques can be ef-fectively implemented despite the challenges posed by the lack of standardized practices. The findings underscore the need for a structured framework for text adaptation to enhance language education and provide insights for future research and development in the field of Kazakh language teaching.

The text synthesis method was used to examine effects of corrective feedback, length of passage, and content on text comprehension as measured by recall and recognition. Two randomly ordered passages from the biography of Enrico Fermi of 13 and 19 sentences each were presented. Subjects rearranged the sentences to reconstruct meaningful texts. Feedback did not influence recall, recognition, or concordance with the original order. Retrieval was not related to concordance. Recall and recognition were proportionally higher for shorter versions and for the more complex selections. The paradigm is promising as it shows the importance of content and passage length as well as the problems of providing feedback for processing discourse.

In the close reading of Natal’ya Vorozhbit’s drama Bad Roads (2017), Yevgeniya Podobna’s book of stories and memoirs titled Girls Cutting Their Locks (2018), and Tamara Duda’s novel Daughter (2019), the author of the article examines the relations between subject and object of the Donbas war texts in the framework of their creation, auto/biographic nature, gender optics, and therapeutic effect. The goal of the study is to analyze how auto/biographical narratives employ actualization of life, leading to the fictionalization of drama and prose texts, which results in heterobiography or synthesis of auto/biographical narratives with heterobiographies. Mostly processed by professional writers, the documentary accounts of military experience of women characters convey the evidence of Zeitgeist, which forms a unique writing in modern war literature. The paper discusses the perspective of women, forms of undermining patriarchy, and rhetoric of “national autobiography” along with self-consciousness and self-reflexivity as markers of auto/biographical texts of Ukrainian women writers of the period in the selected texts.

This article offers a reconstruction of the scientific lineage of comparative and world literature. It will be argued that the approaches by Philarète Chasles and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe were influenced by the meaning of ‘comparative’ developed in scientific texts in the long eighteenth century. Building on the assumption that literature may be made into a hard science, a number of nineteenth-century comparatists then sought to elaborate syntheses of literature in the form of universal laws that would hold to all literary texts. I argue that this ‘scientifying’ approach to literature is still at work to this day, and I conclude my intervention by pointing to the epistemological issues that must be considered when the literary is treated scientifically.
