This paper describes an approach to measuring extinct fission products that would allow for the characterization of a nuclear test at any time. The isotopic composition of molybdenum in five samples of glassy debris from the 1945 Trinity nuclear test has been measured. Nonnatural molybdenum isotopic compositions were observed, reflecting an input from the decay of the short-lived fission products 95Zr and 97Zr. By measuring both the perturbation of the 95Mo/96Mo and 97Mo/96Mo isotopic ratios and the total amount of molybdenum in the Trinity nuclear debris samples, it is possible to calculate the original concentrations of the 95Zr and 97Zr isotopes formed in the nuclear detonation. Together with a determination of the amount of plutonium in the debris, these measurements of extinct fission products allow for new estimates of the efficiency and yield of the historic Trinity test.

To its viewers, the first atomic bomb test (codenamed "Trinity") appeared as not merely a dazzling, unprecedented leap forward in the history of science, not merely the swift, fiery eradication of all of their long-held fears and anxieties concerning the success of the project, but also a monumental event in the history of language (Thomas Farrell saw in it "that beauty the great poets dream about but describe most poorly and inadequately"). This article seeks to interrogate not only the poeticizing of the Trinity test by its architects and the subsequent revulsion toward the event felt by artists worldwide, but also the representational dilemma that the possibility of a "poetic" bomb creates: how can artistic representation of the invisible, the sublime, and the incomprehensible adapt itself to the new technological sublimity of the merciless, neutral variety that the bomb incarnates? The article addresses this question through a study of both nonliterary texts (eyewitness accounts) and literary representation (a reading of Richard Powers's The Time of Our Singing and William Faulkner's Nobel Prize speech). Its conclusion is that the bomb, pace the accounts of the Trinity eyewitnesses, in fact less suggests a variety of representation that renders all others insignificant (thus exempting it from moral, social, or spiritual concerns) than it insists upon the reimagining of older poetic tropes. Trinity, by suggesting an apocalyptic conflict between older modes of signification and the new "atomic poetics," in fact symbiotically relies upon the traditions from which it splits.

This study aims to test and analyze how much influence Motivation and Competence on Employee Performance at PT Trinity Auto in Samarinda. The research method used in this study was observation, interviews, questionnaires, and literature study using a Likert scale and the sample used was 63 samples. Data analysis tools used are validity test, reliability test, classic assumption test, multiple linear regression test. The results showed that motivation and competency simultaneously affect employee performance. From the results of the correlation test of 0.681 which has a strong relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable. The results of the coefficient of determination test which among the independent variables have an effect of 68.1% while the rest are influenced by variables outside this study. From the results of this study concluded that the Competence that most influences on employee performance is seen from the results of the t test with a value of 6,055. These results can prove that competence at PT Trinity Auto has an influence on employee performance.

AbstractAlthough—following contemporary interpreters—this article qualifies Theodore de Régnon's famous sharp distinction between Eastern and Western trinitarianism, it argues that the 'acid test' of the liturgy makes clear that there simply is a contrast between Eastern and Western ways of conceiving of the Trinity. Historically, this contrast found its focal point in the filioque controversy. Therefore, after a sketch of the broader framework of the divergence between Eastern and Western theology, the pros and cons of the addition of the filioque clause to the Creed are discussed. It turns out that Augustine played an ambivalent role in this connection. Finally—drawing on some recent proposals, a way forward in the filioque debate is suggested.

Background/purpose: The Public Health Crisis Conceptual Model was developed to identify and address healthcare and human services needs related to a disaster. The purpose of this study was to historically apply this model to the counties and populations most affected by the first nuclear test in 1945, with a focus on community and local priorities, and to further describe this model and validate its usefulness. If the model had been applied in 1945, what might have been different with respect to research, epidemiological studies, and reparations? Methods: A historical, descriptive case study approach was used, with a focus on community and local priorities. Results: While it was deemed necessary to maintain secrecy surrounding the Trinity test during wartime efforts, scientists and the military knew of the potential dangers of radioactive fallout. However, they neglected to inform exposed New Mexicans after the information about the nature of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had been made public. Conclusions: Research and epidemiological studies could have been implemented years before they were. Resources were not and have not been distributed equitably to those exposed to fallout from the Trinity test site. Using the Public Health Crisis Conceptual Model will help ensure that community and local priorities are an integral component of future disaster-related research.

The relationship between fault and ultra vires is one of the most difficult aspects of the law of Crown Liability. It sets clearly into relief the policy conflicts which arise when private law risk allocation regimes (the adversarial adjudicative imposition of liability rules grounded in a concept of corrective justice) are invoked to police the functioning of public law risk allocation regimes (the allocation through various non-adjudicative procedures of the benefit and burden according to a variety of conceptions of distributive justice). The Crown Liability Act and article 94 of the Code of Civil Procedure both incorporate as against the Crown rules of private law delictual behaviour which were originally developed for regulating activity between private parties as such. They, therefore, compel courts to determine whether jurisdictional error per se constitutes fault. The history of twentieth century attempts to reconcile ultra vires and fault is a history of the judicial search for boundary criteria between realms of public and private law. These boundaries have been, among others, a good faith test, functional criteria such as judicial and legislative immunity or immunity for planning functions, the notion of breach of statutory duty, and so on. Each of these attempts has ultimately be repulsed by the desire of litigants to recover against the Crown on the widest possible basis. Modern theories of jurisdiction being so all-embracing and modern conceptions of fault being so comprehensive, the courts are constantly being asked to develop an absolute equation between fault and ultra vires. The paper concludes by exploring several options for harmonizing private law and public law risk allocation regimes. It recommends a restructuring of the Crown Liability Act so as (i) to permit recovery on a variety of no fault bases, (ii) to permit recovery even when intra vires acts have been undertaken (if these cause significant or disproportional damage) and (iii) to permit the immunization of certain governmental functions from private law liability even when the decisions in question have been taken in an ultra vires fashion.

Purpose Cognition, conflict and cohesion constitute an inseparable body of group dynamics in entrepreneurial teams. There have been few studies of how entrepreneurial team members interact with each other to enhance venture performance. The purpose of this paper is to develop and test a model that explains the trinity of cognition, conflict and cohesion in terms of social interaction between entrepreneurial team members. Design/methodology/approach Drawing upon the existing literature concerning entrepreneurial teams, the hypothesized model posits that shared cognition influences team cohesion through the mediating effects of intra-team conflicts. The model also postulates that team cohesion is positively associated with new venture performance and entrepreneurial satisfaction. Structural equation modeling is used to test the hypothesized model, using data that were collected from 203 entrepreneurial teams from technology-based companies in Taiwan. Findings The results show that shared cognition in entrepreneurial team members maintains team cohesion by restraining conflict and that team cohesion has a positive influence on entrepreneurial members’ satisfaction and new venture profitability. Practical implications The leader of a new venture team must endeavor to improve shared cognition between entrepreneurial members. To strengthen shared cognition, the leader can hold formal workshops to build consensus, informal meetings to share views, or use social media to enhance common understanding. Originality/value This paper verifies the connections between shared cognition, conflicts and cohesion in entrepreneurial teams in predicting new venture success and highlights the importance of cultivating a shared cognition in an entrepreneurial team to manage conflicts.

Purpose: Different students may adopt different learning approaches: namely, deep and surface. This study aimed to characterize the learning strategies of medical students at Trinity School of Medicine and to explore potential correlations between deep learning approach and the students’ academic scores. Methods: The study was a questionnaire-based, cross-sectional, observational study. A total of 169 medical students in the basic science years of training were included in the study after giving informed consent. The Biggs’s Revised Two-Factor Study Process Questionnaire in paper form was distributed to subjects from January to November 2017. For statistical analyses, the Student t-test, 1-way analysis of variance followed by the post-hoc t-test, and the Pearson correlation test were used. The Cronbach alpha was used to test the internal consistency of the questionnaire. Results: Of the 169 subjects, 132 (response rate, 78.1%) completely filled out the questionnaires. The Cronbach alpha value for the items on the questionnaire was 0.8. The score for the deep learning approach was 29.4± 4.6, whereas the score for the surface approach was 24.3± 4.2, which was a significant difference (P< 0.05). A positive correlation was found between the deep learning approach and students’ academic performance (r= 0.197, P< 0.05, df= 130). Conclusion: Medical students in the basic science years at Trinity School of Medicine adopted the deep learning approach more than the surface approach. Likewise, students who were more inclined towards the deep learning approach scored significantly higher on academic tests.

AbstractDrastic changes have been detected in glacial systems of the Antarctic Peninsula in the last few decades and are well documented in numerous scientific publications. However, the spatial and temporal distribution of glacier changes on the Antarctic Peninsula remains largely restricted to ice fronts. To expand the current monitoring of a few glaciers, unevenly distributed along the peninsula, to a representative set, we developed a method to simplify the detection of boundaries between glacier zones using satellite SAR data. The evolution of glacier zones is greatly influenced by local and regional climatic and meteorological settings. Their variations in response to changes in energy or mass balance are considered as good indicators of climatic changes. In this paper, we describe the results of knowledge-based image analysis algorithms on test areas located at Trinity Peninsula and near Marguerite Bay. In general, the two analyzed areas show different patterns of glacier zone development. The bare-ice zone occurs mainly on glaciers located on the eastern side of Trinity Peninsula. Its upper boundary shows a good correlation with the mean summer air temperature. Finally, the position of the dry-snow line shows different spatial patterns of change in both study areas.

Maintaining an adequate water supply is one of the key challenges faced by the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, where increasing population and rising water demand have elevated the vulnerability of the communities to water shortages. In this paper, we conducted a preliminary study exploring the possibility of converting flood storage in the Joe Pool Lake (JPL) as a means to improve water supply reliability and achieve better cost efficiency. This study employs a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) approach that considers the costs of meeting conversion demand and supply requirements over the northern portion of the Trinity River Basin. It includes trade-offs between capturing and storing natural flow versus return flow from the treatment facilities of the Trinity River Authority (TRA). A set of hypothetical prices and demand figures with the record drought of 1940-1996 considered to test the LP model. The optimal strategy yields expansion of JPL and associated storage-diversion on an annual basis. Also, the outcomes of the analyses suggest that, while the conversion would have a positive impact on water availability, storing the return flow might not produce sufficient cost savings; unless higher prices were imposed on the stored-return flow.

Detonation of the first fission bomb at White Sands, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945, produced a tremendous neutron flux capable of creating tritium and radiocarbon byproducts. We sampled a 115-year-old pinyon (Pinus edulis) 10km east of the Trinity test site to determine 14C evidence of this event. The most likely mechanism for this enrichment in the 1945 tree ring would be fixation of 14CO2 produced at the blast site and carried with the fallout cloud over the pinyon site. Analysis of cellulose of the 1944 and 1945 rings shows δ13C values of −19.9 and −19.5, respectively, and 14C activity (fraction of modern uncorrected for δ13C) as 0.991 ± .005 and 0.991 ± .006, respectively. It is likely that the duration and/or concentration of the 14CO2 exposure was not sufficient to increase 14C activity expected for that year.

This article examines the understanding of the correlation between the Trinity doctrine and the maturity of faith in the Full Gospel Bussines Men's Fellowship Jakarta (Chapter 7 Muara Karang). Understanding the doctrine of the Trinity is part of Christian faith. This teaching aims to make believers have correct knowledge, increase and understanding and are able to mature in knowing the Triune God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). Maturity of faith is certainly part of an effort to teach Christian faith, especially in understanding the doctrine of the Trinity by churches, communities and Christian organizations. Maturity of faith does not occur instantly but because of the process of the Triune God and having the unity of faith and true knowledge of Christ. The research was conducted using quantitative methods. After carrying out the research according to the standard methodology, the results of the calculation of the correlation between the two variables were 0.350 and entered into the positive category even though it was still low. Based on the regression test, the results between the two variables were 12.3%, which means that the understanding of the Trinity Doctrine contributed 12.3% to the maturity of faith. Thus understanding the doctrine of the Trinity can generate and increase the maturity of one's faith and can be applied because it has a positive relationship, however, this is not the only reference because there are other factors and topics that correlate with the maturity of faith.AbstrakArtikel ini mengkaji pemahaman korelasi doktrin Tritunggal dengan kedewasaan iman di Full Gospel Bussines Men’s Fellowship Jakarta (Chapter 7 Muara Karang). Pemahaman doktrin Tritunggal merupakan bagian dari iman Kristen. Pengajaran ini bertujuan agar orang percaya memiliki pengetahuan, peningkatan dan pemahaman yang benar serta mampu dewasa dalam pengenalan akan Allah Tritunggal (Bapa, Anak dan Roh Kudus). Kedewasaan iman tentu merupakan bagian dari suatu upaya pengajaran tentang iman Kristen khususnya dalam pemahaman doktrin Tritunggal yang dilakukan oleh gereja, komunitas maupun organisasi Kristen. Kedewasaan iman tidak terjadi secara instant melainkan karena proses dari Allah Tritunggal serta memiliki kesatuan iman dan pengetahuan yang benar tentang Kristus. Adapun penelitian ini dilakukan dengan metode kuantitatif. Setelah melaksanakan penelitian sesuai metodologi yang baku, maka didapat hasil perhitungan korelasi antara kedua variable adalah sebesar 0,350 dan masuk pada kategori positif meski masih rendah. Berdasarkan uji regresi didapat hasil antara kedua variable sebesar 12,3% yang berarti bahwa Pemahaman Doktrin Tritunggal memberi kontribusi sebesar 12,3% terhadap kedewasaan iman. Dengan demikian pemahaman doktrin Tritunggal dapat menimbulkan dan meningkatkan kedewasaan iman seseorang dan dapat diterapkan karena memiliki hubungan yang positif namun demikian hal tersebut tidak dijadikan satu-satunya acuan karena masih ada faktor-faktor dan topik-topik lain yang berkorelasi dengan kedewasaan iman.

OBJECTIVES/GOALS: To develop feasible screening methods for activity of the enzyme Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) with point of care applicability. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Current knowledge establishes the relevance of G6PD as a critical therapeutic determinant for effective antimalarial therapy due to the occurrence of mutations that lead to post-treatment severe adverse effects. We present our findings on development of cost effective point-of-care screening methodologies to ascertain G6PD deficiency. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Using Patient Cohort Explorer and data from the Department of Pathology, we established the prevalence of G6PD deficiency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, MS as high as 11.8% (African-American males in all population, n = 2518). Next, for selection of potential target groups, we set up a protocol for recruitment of volunteers based on ethnic background, parental ethnicity, and medical history. G6PD activity was evaluated using point of care methods [Trinity Biotech test or CareSTART Biosensor], and Gold Standard quantitative spectrophotometric assay (LabCorp). Determinations in >20 subjects have showed comparable concordance. If used with a conservative interpretation of the signal, the Trinity Biotech test showed superior potential for use in the field relative to the CareSTART Biosensor. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: We established the prevalence of G6PD deficiency in our medical center. We have also setup tests for point-of-care assessment of G6PD. Pending evaluation of the relative tests performance, we will be in position to screen individuals and select them for a prospective clinical trial to evaluate the safety of antimalarial agents on scope of G6PD deficiency.

Background.Blood transfusion is a therapeutic procedure usually undertaken in patients with severe anaemia. In Ghana, severe anaemia is mostly due to malaria caused by severePlasmodium falciparuminfection, road traffic accidents, and haemoglobinopathy-induced acute haemolysis.Method.This cross-sectional study evaluated coinheritance of sickle cell haemoglobin variant and G6PD enzymopathy among individuals that donated blood at the Holy Trinity Hospital, Berekum, in the Brong-Ahafo Region, Ghana. Demographic data and other pertinent information were captured using questionnaire. Sickle cell haemoglobin variants were determined using cellulose acetate electrophoresis (pH 8.6). Qualitative G6PD status and quantitative G6PD enzyme activity were determined using methaemoglobin reduction and Trinity Biotech G6PD test kit, respectively.Results.Prevalence of sickle cell trait (SCT) and G6PD enzymopathy coinheritance was 7%. In addition, 19.5% of the donors had 10%–60% of normal G6PD enzyme activity suggesting that these donor units are prone to stressor-induced acute haemolysis when given to recipients. Mild G6PD activity (p=0.03, OR: 2.410 (CI: 1.049–5.534)), commercial (p=0.020, OR: 5.609 (CI: 1.309–24.035)), and voluntary (p=0.034, OR: 2.404 (CI: 1.071–5.397)) donors were significantly associated with SCT.Conclusion.Screening for red cell pathologies must be incorporated into existing protocols for populations with high incidence of haemoglobinopathies to protect high-risk recipients.

Drawing from diverse perspectives, this paper undertakes a comparative evaluation of the speaking sections of these two tests and aims to provide insights into how these exams structure their speaking components, the criteria used for evaluation, and how effectively they measure candidates' English communication skills and practical language abilities. By comparing these aspects, the paper presents the similarities and differences of the speaking assessments of the two testing systems and intends to contribute a deeper understanding within these globally recognized exams to educators, test developers, and candidates alike.

A widely held view among psycholinguists is that the L2 mental lexicon is qualitatively different from the L, mental lexicon - more 'phonological' and more 'loosely organized'. In this paper we present some C-test-elicited data from the pilot phase of the Trinity College Dublin Modern Languages Project which call the above view into question. Our data suggest that the way in which words are processed depends not on the status (L1 or L2) of the language of which they are tokens, but rather on the degree of difficulty of the lexical task concerned. Our data further suggest that there is some measure of interaction between L, and L2 lexical processing.

Abstract Abstract 5116 Background: D-dimer assays are currently used as a one-size-fits-all diagnostic test for DVT where the same cutpoint is used to define a positive result for all patients. This approach ignores the relationship between the diagnostic properties of the assay and the pretest probability of the disease. Objective: We conducted a randomized, allocation concealed, controlled, assessor-blinded trial to compare the safety and efficiency of two diagnostic strategies for D-dimer testing for first acute DVT of the lower limb: Selective use of D-dimer testing, using different D-dimer cutpoint levels according to clinical pretest probability (C-PTP) and the traditional Uniform approach. Method: 1723 consecutive eligible inpatients and outpatients at 5 clinical centres (4 in Ontario, 1 in Montreal) had their C-PTP assessed using the Wells' Score and were randomized to either: Uniform D-dimer testing, in which all patients had a D-dimer test and a level of <0.5 μ g fibrinogen equivalent units (FEU)/mL was classified as negative (the control group); or Selective D-dimer testing, in which D-dimer testing was (a) performed in patients with Low and Moderate C-PTP only, (patients with a High C-PTP had an ultrasound, but no D-dimer testing), and (b) was classified as negative if the D-dimer level was <0.5 μ g FEU/mL with Moderate C-PTP or <1.0 μ g FEU/mL with Low C-PTP (the experimental group). The D-dimer assays used in this study were the MDA D-Dimer (bioMerieux, Inc and Trinity Biotech) and STA Liatest D-Dimer(Diagnostica Stago). All patients with a positive D-dimer had an ultrasound of their leg. Symptomatic venous thromboembolic events (VTE) during 3 months of follow-up were objectively confirmed and independently adjudicated. Results: The incidence of VTE during 3 months of follow-up in patients who were not diagnosed with DVT at initial presentation was 1.1% (9/811) with Uniform testing, and 1.1% (9/814) with Selective testing (difference 0.004%, 95% CI:-1.122, 1.111). The incidence of VTE during 3 months of follow-up in patients in the Low C-PTP Select arm (D-dimer cutpoint 1.0 μ g FEU/mL) was 0% (0/356), and in the Low C-PTP Uniform arm (D-dimer cutpoint 0.5 μ g FEU/mL), it was 0.3% (1/336). Conclusion: This is the first randomized controlled clinical trial to show that Selective use of D-dimer testing, with a higher D-dimer cutpoint in patients with Low C-PTP, is safe and potentially more efficient than current practice. This paper examined the potential inflation spill-over effects from BRIC to five SADC countries (Angola, Botswana, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia) by using data collected for the period 1985-2020. Thirty-six (36) observations were used to obtain more reliable results with greater precision. Studies conducted on the impossible trinity argue that, in the case of highly financially integrated economies, domestic interest rates are tightly linked to the international interest rates if it is impossible to manipulate domestic interest rates. Specifically, interest rates for open economies tend to be influenced by international interest rates if these economies opt for free capital flows with a fixed exchange rate regime. Fisher's effect theory asserts that domestic interest rates trend positively with inflation rates. The principal method of research used is that of quantitative analysis. Given the empirical nature of the research, the paradigm employed is positivist. This paper employed the generalised method of moments (GMM) model, the Johansen cointegration procedure, and the Granger causality test in a vector error correction (VEC) model. The findings indicated that the fixed-exchange-rate regimes (soft pegs and hard pegs) are associated with high responsiveness of the domestic inflation rate to the foreign countries’ inflation rates, rather than to floating exchange-rate regimes (free-floating and managed floats). The policy implications for control of inflation in SADC economies are that, because of the financial market integration increase between SADC and BRIC economies, monetary authorities in SADC countries should consider floating exchange rate regimes (managed-floats or free-floating).

Often the errors regarding Christological doctrine stem from the understanding of Adoptionism. Where they assume that Jesus was appointed as the Son of God and has no equality in the relationship of teh Trinity. Of course, this wrong assumption affects the people and destroys true faith. So it is important for God’s people to have a foundation of faith that holds firmly to God’s infallible revelation. So that every believer has a shield of faith that is strong and can stand the test. In this way God’s people can silence misleading teachings such as Adoptionism.

The starting point for the considerations presented in the article are Monika Niwelińska’s radiographs from the “Trinity Site” series. The artist left photographic plates in the area where a ground-based test of atomic weapons was carried out in 1945. The irradiated earth affects the photosensitive material, changing its color and texture. In this way, the materiality of the soil and the radioactive activity induced by human experiments literally leave their mark on the artistic work. The artist’s works allow for a new interpretation of the groundbreaking text by Rosalind E. Krauss Notes on the Index, which changed thinking about the artistic representation of twentieth-century art. Read in the context of contemporary theories of materiality (including Karen Barad), it indicates the connections between image, trace and energy.

Hardcover; $29.95. ISBN: 9780674248632. *This book ends with a tragic photograph. The reader will see a young boy carrying a sleeping infant on his back. However, the infant is not asleep but instead is dead as his brother waits his turn to have his brother's body thrown into a giant pyre at Nagasaki in the days following the atomic bomb blast. This picture is symbolic of the tragedy of war and provides a provocative statement regarding the involvement of US physicians in the development of the atomic weapons program toward the end of World War II. The author, James L. Nolan Jr., PhD (Professor of Sociology, Williams College), provides an excellent historical vignette of this period through a written biography of his grandfather, James F. Nolan, MD. *Dr. Nolan, as well as Louis Hempelmann, MD and Stafford Warren, MD, were intricately involved with the Trinity testing in New Mexico as well as with the development of the atomic bomb as part of the Manhattan Project. Dr. Nolan met and collaborated with such famous people associated with the Manhattan Project, including J. Robert Oppenheimer, Edward Teller, and General Leslie Groves. The entire group of physicians oversaw determining radiation risks during atomic bomb development and testing. This placed them in a difficult situation which "linked the arts of healing and war in ways that had little precedent" (p. 166) especially regarding the Hippocratic Oath.1 *Dr. Nolan was involved with setting up the hospital at Los Alamos as well as providing medical care for the Los Alamos staff and families. However, the job of these clinicians also had other aspects. Radiation exposure to workers was observed and recorded at Los Alamos leading to some of the initial descriptions of radiation poisoning. Additionally, the physicians were involved in determining radiation hazards associated with Los Alamos and in the setting of Trinity with most of their findings either being ignored or hidden from the public, sometimes with the complicity of these individuals. It is fascinating to consider that Dr. Nolan was one of the military personnel chosen to accompany Little Boy (the bomb that exploded over Hiroshima) to the Pacific Front at Tinian Island on the famous and later tragic USS Indianapolis. I cannot imagine, in our present time, that a physician would be charged with transporting and reporting the safety of a technologically advanced weapons system. *The book contains many fascinating stories, including how military physicians as well as other personnel were told to assert there was no significant radiation after the bombing in Japan (despite obvious radiation injury being noted in thousands of individuals), how the military allowed reporters at the Trinity test site after the bomb test with no protection except for "protective" booties, how US military physicians were told to not treat Japanese civilians after the bombing in order to circumvent moral responsibility of the bombing (this was ignored), how the inhabitants of the Bikini Atoll and Enewetak Atoll were forced to abandon their ancestral homes so that further atomic bomb testing could occur (with subsequent deleterious effects in their sociologic and health outcomes), and how patients in the United States (many who were already terminally ill) were secretly injected with plutonium to determine the effects of radiation injury. *Besides being a biography and history of a physician and his colleagues, this book also goes in some philosophical directions, including considering what is the goal of technology. Oppenheimer himself stated that "It's amazing ... how the technology tools trap one" (p. 33). The "trap" leads to a myriad of issues. Dr. Nolan believed radiation should be considered under the paradigm of an "instrumentalist view of technology" in which new technology could be used for the advancement or decline of our species. In his case, he began experimenting with radiation to treat gynecologic cancer in his patients. The book then explores "technological determinism," both optimistic and pessimistic, which is still an issue permeating our culture today. The author states that humans appear to always choose technologic advances even before fully knowing downstream economic, political, or cultural effects. Such examples cited by the author include the internet, social media, and genetic engineering. *A Christian will find this book unsettling when one considers what one prioritizes in his (her) faith. For example, one of the physicists who worked at Los Alamos was a Quaker. The Trinity test was named after the Christian Trinity (based on a John Donne sonnet). These facts are sobering when the author provides reports of "downwinders" who suffered catastrophic disease after the Trinity test as well as going into detail about the thousands of Japanese who suffered radiation poisoning after the nuclear bombing. In addition, the bombing of Nagasaki was close to the Christian part of the city resulting in the killing of most of the Christians living there. Indeed, the pursuit of science is a fascinating human endeavor, but the point of science is to objectively determine facts. Science does not necessarily provide subjectivity by itself which allows it to be influenced by meaning, moral values, and responsibility.2 In the moral arena, people with religious beliefs, including Christians, are required to influence the idea of technologic determinism in a positive direction. Abstract Integrated assessment evaluates language proficiency through tasks that require the test-taker to produce a written or spoken output based on listening or reading comprehension (reading or listening-into-writing or speaking). Since integrated assessment aims at reflecting the communicative and cognitive requirements of academic life and other professions, it is considered a means of assessment that is both authentic and valid. Examples of integrated tests can be found in high-stakes examinations at universities with English as the medium of instruction, and in the standardised high-stakes examinations offered by ETS, Pearson Education and Trinity College London. This report provides an example of integrated assessment in action by describing a currently used integrated test developed at the Language Department of the Faculty of Science, University of South Bohemia in the Czech Republic. Since 2018, this particular integrated test has served as the entrance examination for Biological Chemistry (EEBC), a bachelor’s degree course delivered entirely in English. By detailing the rationale behind the examination and the design process, this report aims to show that integrated assessment can provide a valid alternative to independent assessment at the tertiary level.

There has recently been much discussion on the relevance of the open economy trilemma in the context of deepening financial integration of countries across the world (see for instance, Rey (2013) and Devereux and Yetman (2014)). The open economy trilemma is an important issue for the countries in Asia not least because their financial systems are small and exchange rate stability is crucial to their economic growth. This paper investigates whether the economies in Asia are still bound by the "impossible trinity" by examining the interest rate transmission from the US to the region before and after the onset of the global financial crisis. We make a distinction between long-run versus short-run transmission of interest rates by conducting the Peseran bounds test of cointegration and Wald test of joint significance respectively on autoregressive distributed lag models estimated with data from nine Asian economies. The findings on the strength of interest rate pass-through are related to each country's trilemma configuration. Overall, our empirical results provide some supporting evidence that the Asian economies are still constrained by the open economy trilemma.

AbstractOn 6 August 1945, at exactly 8:15 a.m., the first atomic bomb in history was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. Along with the Soviet entrance into the war on 8 August, the atomic bomb was one of the “twin shocks” that finally compelled Emperor Hirohito to make the decision to surrender. The real “shock” of Hiroshima, however, was not the introduction of a “new and most cruel bomb,” as Hirohito described the atomic bomb in his 15 August radio broadcast announcing the decision to surrender. Rather, it was the capability of the United States to produce the rumored .super weapon. that Japan’s own top atomic scientists had repeatedly deemed impossible, the latest instance of such denial coming only several weeks earlier on 21 July 1945—five days after the Manhattan Project’s successful Trinity atomic test at Alamogordo, New Mexico.
