Tongue diagnosis is one of the most important diagnostic tools in traditional Chinese medicine and has been verified for thousands of years. However, its subjectivity and repeatability has been disputed continuously. The tongue coating as the primary coverage of tongue diagnosis provides more objectivity and reproducibility due to its relatively clear molecular basis; it also has a close relationship with many system diseases and may be used as a potentially valuable disease diagnostic tool. ABSTRACT While prion infection of the lymphoreticular system (LRS) is necessary for neuroinvasion in many prion diseases, in bovine spongiform encephalopathy and atypical cases of sheep scrapie there is evidence to challenge that LRS infection is required for neuroinvasion. Here we investigated the role of prion infection of LRS tissues in neuroinvasion following extraneural inoculation with the HY and DY strains of the transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME) agent. DY TME agent infectivity was not detected in spleen or lymph nodes following intraperitoneal inoculation and clinical disease was

Weakness and fatigue in the orofacial system often are presumed to contribute to the dysarthria associated with neuromotor disorders, although previous research findings are equivocal. In this study, tongue strength, endurance, and stability during a sustained submaximal effort were assessed in 16 persons with mild to severe Parkinson disease (PD) and a perceptible speech disorder. The same measures were taken from one hand for comparison. Only tongue endurance was found to be significantly lower in these participants than in neurologically normal control participants matched for sex, age, wei

Riga-Fede disease (RFD), also known as traumatic eosinophilic granuloma, is a benign inflammatory condition of the oral cavity that may mimic a malignant tumour. It’s a rare condition mainly reported in infants. We present a unique case report of a 57-year-old man who presented to our outpatient department with foreign body sensation in the throat and swelling over the dorsum of the tongue for a period of 1 month. He gave no history of trauma, especially due to sharp teeth. Video laryngoscopy done revealed an ulceroproliferative growth on the midline of the dorsum of the tongue. With clinical

Background It is important to evaluate tongue function in terms of its clinical implications for swallowing ability. Motor dysfunction and loss of coordination of the tongue are frequently seen, and this influences the oral and pharyngeal phases of swallowing. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the effect of a single acupuncture treatment for tongue pressure in Parkinson's disease. Methods A total of 13 patients, aged 57– 84 years, were recruited. Tongue pressure was measured using a tongue pressure manometer. Furthermore, swallowing reflex latency was measured in 3 of the 13 pati

Introduction: The tongue is most convenient approach to observe changes in the body's fundamental components and assess the progression of disease. The Ayurvedic Samhita lists several types of Rogi Pariksha that can be used to diagnose the disease. The Ashtavidha Pariksha, is described by Acharya Yogratnakar. Jivha Pariksha is one among them. Jivha Pariksha involves shape, colour, moisture, movement and the coating on the tongue. Assessment of nonspeech tongue function is common in speech-language pathology. This paper reviews techniques used to determine tongue strength and endurance, and describes a constant-effort task. These techniques are intended to reveal and quantify the presence of weakness or fatigue of the tongue. The consequences of performing these tasks with and without a bite block, used to fix jaw position, are considered. Whether nonspeech tongue impairment is associated with speech dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease is another topic of interest. Past studies indicated reduced tongue strength and endur

Tongue inspection is the main content of four diagnostic methods “observation, auscultation and olfaction, interrogation, palpation” for traditional Chinese medical science. Traditional tongue inspection mainly depends on doctor’s eyesight and subjective observation to diagnose a disease. It lacks objectivity and hinders further development. It is the only tendency to use computer technology to objective and standard tongue inspection. The tongue split out from the face is the premise for tongue objective.
