AbstractNon-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections usually present as an enlarged lymph node in the neck of a non-immunocompromised child. The differential diagnosis includes bacterial adenitis, malignant disease and tuberculosis. The definitive diagnosis relies upon isolating the organisms in culture. The treatment is complete surgical excision with, or without, anti-tuberculous chemotherapyTen cases of NTM infections are presented with a discussion of the aetiology and treatment of this condition.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains in 2022 a significant public health issue as it remains endemic in some areas of the globe, with a high prevalence in underdeveloped countries (Pujani, Khan, Hassan, Jetley, Raina, Breast Dis., 35(3): 195–198, 2015. doi:10.3233/BD-150405. Tuberculous lymphadenitis is the most extrapulmonary tuberculosis. It used to be called scrofula in the past coming from the Latin meaning breeding sow (Kokosali, Lloyd, Dent Update, 33(5): 306–30

Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) affecting the head-and-neck area can often resemble cancer, leading to misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. A better understanding of this condition is necessary for early diagnosis and prompt treatment initiation. This study examines the clinical and pathological characteristics of different types of TB in the head-and-neck region. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed patients diagnosed with TB in the head-and-neck region at a health center between January 1, 2018, and January 1, 2024. Paradoxical deterioration due to immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) occurs in up to 21% of children initiating antiretroviral therapy. Mycobacterial diseases are the most common, with BCG-vaccine adenitis predominating in infants and M. tuberculosis (TB) in older children. The difficulty of diagnosing TB in HIV-infected children and the increasing risk of drug-resistant TB complicate the diagnosis and management of both paradoxical IRIS and post-antiretroviral therapy TB. History and clinical assessment remain key strategies in the management of these infants and children. Ther

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is a well described human pathogen.1 Less commonly, atypical or nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) can cause disease in humans. Recent studies report that NTM account for one-third of all pathogenic mycobacterial isolates in the United States.2 Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex (MAI) is the most common NTM causing human disease.2 It is also the most common mycobacterial cause of cervical lymphadenitis in children in areas with low endemic rates of MTB infection.3 MAI/NTM infection other than cervical adenitis is unusual in children, except in those that
