Nous presentons une etude experimentale approfondie de la turbulence bidimensionnelle entretenue. Les experiences sont realisees dans de minces couches de fluides stratifiees et les champs de vitesse sont determines a l'aide d'une technique de velocimetrie par suivi de particules. Les conjectures de kraichnan sur la cascade inverse d'energie et la cascade directe d'enstrophie sont confirmees, notamment les lois de puissance pour les spectres d'energie. Nous etudions la cascade inverse de maniere plus detaillee. Nous trouvons que, en fonction de la dissipation d'energie aux grandes echelles, le regime de cascade inverse classique ou le regime condense sont obtenus comme etats statistiquement stationnaires. Les proprietes statistiques des tourbillons coherents tendent a montrer que la dynamique de la cascade est regie par un mecanisme d'agregation des tourbillons de meme signe plutot que par une succession de fusions creant des tourbillons de taille de plus en plus grande. De plus, en net contraste par rapport au cas tridimensionnel, nous trouvons que la cascade d'energie ne presente pas d'intermittence, avec des statistiques quasiment gaussiennes et des exposants de fonctions de structures indiscernables des valeurs de kolmogorov. Ce comportement non intermittent est egalement observe pour la cascade d'enstrophie. Nous etudions la dispersion relative de paires de particules passives dans des ecoulements presentant une cascade inverse d'energie. Les proprietes statistiques de ce processus sont determinees en integrant numeriquement les trajectoires lagrangiennes des particules a partir des champs de vitesse experimentaux. La loi hyperdiffusive de richardson est observee et un comportement fortement non-gaussien est obtenu pour les distributions des separations des paires. Nous montrons que le processus est temporellement auto-similaire et que de fortes correlations temporelles sont presentes. Ces observations compromettent l'approche en terme de vols de levy.

The first part is the derivation of one-particle vertical diffusion for stably stratified turbulence with or without rapid rotation. Nicolleau & Vassilicos (2000) have analytically calculated vertical one-particle diffusion in stably stratified turbulence without rotation. One-particle vertical diffusion for turbulence with stable stratification and with or without rapid rotation has been derived here analytically using the solutions of the linearized equations of motions. The second part is an attempt to explain the depletion of horizontal pair diffusion in strongly stratified turbulence. "Recently, Nicolleau et al. (2005) have shown that in their Kinematic Simulations (KS) of vertically stably and strongly stratified homogeneous turbulence (Froude number smaller than 1). horizontal pair diffusion is significantly depleted by comparison to unstratified isotropic and homogeneous two- and three-dimensional turbulence. We have seeked to explain this depletion of horizontal pair diffusion by vertical stratification in terms of the probability density function of the horizontal divergence of the velocity field and the statistics of stagnation points following the recent approach to Richardson pair diffusion by Davila & Vassilicos (2003), Goto & Vassilicos (2004), Goto et al. (2005) and Osborne et al. (2005). We measure the number density of stagnation points in the KS of three-dimensional strongly stratified turbulence and find that it is virtually identical to what it is in KS of three-dimensional isotropic turbulence The third part is a study of the vertical motions of small, spherical inertial particles in strongly stratified turbulence.

Cette thèse étudie la turbulence bidimensionnelle au moyen de simulations numériques. La turbulence bidimensionnelle intéresse surtout les météorologues et les océanographes car elle constitue une première approximation de leurs écoulements. Mon travail sur le modèle de turbulence bidimensionnelle du Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique a consisté à la fois en l'amélioration du modèle et la réalisation de diverses expériences sur ce modèle. La principale amélioration apportée au modèle est la mise au point d'une bonne modélisation de la cascade inverse d'énergie, i.e. une simulation plus réaliste des plus grandes échelles de l'écoulement. Les expériences réalisées sur ce modèle amélioré concernent la dispersion (absolue ou relative), i.e. nous simulons l'advection de flotteurs lagrangiens par l'écoulement. Les résultats obtenus diffèrent sensiblement des conjectures théoriques et nous obligent à envisager une approche différente de la dispersion turbulente. J'ai ajouté le travail d'une année, réalisé comme scientifique du contingent à l'Institut de Mécanique de Grenoble, sur les instabilités qui se développent dans une couche de mélange bidimensionnelle.

The inhomogeneous, anisotropic turbulence downstream of a square prism is investigated by means of direct numerical simulations (DNS) and two-point statistics. As noted by Moffatt (2002) “it now seems that the intense preoccupation [...] with the problem of homogeneous isotropic turbulence was perhaps misguided” acknowledging there is now a revived interest in studying inhomogeneous turbulence. The full description of the turbulence cascade requires a two-point analysis which re- volves around the recently derived Kármán-Howarth-Monin-Hill equation (KHMH). This equation is the inhomogeneous/anisotropic analogue to the so-called Kolmogorov equation (or Kármán-Howarth equation) used in Kolmogorov’s 1941 seminal papers (K41) which are the foundation to the most successful turbulence theory to date. Particular focus is placed on the near wake region where the turbulence is anticipated to be highly inhomogeneous and anisotropic. Because DNS gives direct access to all ve- locity components and their derivatives, all terms of the KHMH can be computed directly without resorting to any simplifications. Computation of the term associated with the non-linear inter-scale transfer of energy (Π) revealed that this rate is roughly constant over a range of scales which increases (within the bounds of our database) with distance to the wake generator, provided that the orientations of the pairs of points are averaged-out on the plane of the wake. This observation appears in tandem with a near −5/3 power law in the spectra of fluctuating velocities which deteriorates as the constancy of Π improves. The constant non-linear inter-scale transfer plays a major role in K41 and is required for deriving the 2/3-law (which is real space equivalent of the −5/3). We extend our analysis to a triple decomposition where the organised motion associ- ated with the vortex shedding is disentangled from the stochastic motions which do not display a distinct time signature. The imprint of the shedding-associated motion upon the stochastic component is observed to contribute to the small-scale anisotropy of the stochastic motion. Even though the dynamics of the shedding-associated motion differs drastically from that of the stochastic one, we find that both contributions are required in order to preserve the constant inter-scale transfer of energy. We further find that the inter- scale fluxes resulting from this decomposition display local (in scale-space) combinations of direct and inverse cascades. While the inter-scale fluxes associated with the coherent motion can be explained on the basis of simple geometrical arguments, the stochastic motion shows a persistent inverse cascade at orientations normal to the centreline despite its energy appearing to be roughly isotropically distributed.

Turbulent buoyant jets are a major feature in fire hazards. The solution of the
Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations through computational fluid
dynamic (CFD) techniques allow such flows to be simulated. The use of Reynolds
averaging requires an empirical model to close the set of equations, this is known as
the turbulence model. This thesis undertakes to investigate linear and nonlinear
approaches to turbulence modelling and to apply the knowledge gained to the
simulation of compartment fires. The principle contribution of this work is the reanalysis
of the standard k- ε turbulence model and the implementation and
application of more sophisticated models as applied to thermal plumes.
Validation in this work, of the standard k- ε model against the most recent
experimental data, counters the established view that the model is inadequate for the
simulation of buoyant flows. Examination of previous experimental data suggests
that the measurements were not taken in the self-similar region resulting in
misleading comparisons with published numerical solutions. This is a significant
conclusion that impacts of the general approach taken to modelling turbulence in
this field.
A number of methods for modelling the Reynolds stresses and the turbulent scalar
fluxes have been considered and, in some cases for the first time, are applied to nonisothermal
flows. The relative influence of each model has been assessed enabling
its performance to be gauged. The results from this have made a valuable
contribution to the knowledge in the field and have enabled the acquired experience
to be applied to the simulation of compartment fires.
The overall conclusion drawn from this thesis is that for the simulation of
compartment fires, the most appropriate approach with current computational
resources, is still the buoyancy corrected standard k- ε model. However, the
turbulence scalar flux should be modelled by the generalised gradient diffusion
hypothesis (GGDH) rather than the eddy-diffusivity assumption.

The effect of background turbulence on a turbulent jet was investigated experimentally. The primary objective of this work was to study the effect of different levels of the background turbulence on the dynamics and mixing of an axisymmetric turbulent jet at different Reynolds numbers. The secondary objective, which arose during the experiments, was to improve the acoustic Doppler velocimetry measurements which were found to be inaccurate when measuring turbulence statistics. In addition to acoustic Doppler velocimetry (ADV), flying hot-film anemometry was employed in this study. To move the hot-film probe at constant speeds, a high precision traversing mechanism was designed and built. A data acquisition system and LabVIEW programs were also developed to acquire data and control the traversing mechanism. The experiments started by benchmarking the two measurement techniques in an axisymmetric turbulent jet. Comparing the results with those of the other studies validated the use of flying hot-film anemometry to estimate the mean and the root-mean square (RMS) velocities. The experiments also validated the use of ADV for measurement of the mean velocities (measured in three Cartesian directions) and the RMS velocity (measured in the z-direction only). RMS velocities measured by the ADV along the x- and y-direction of the probe were overestimated.Attempts to improve the turbulence statistics measured by the ADV using the post-processing and noise-reduction methods presented in the literature were undertaken. However, the RMS velocities remained higher than the accepted values. In addition, a noise-reduction method was presented in this study which reduced the RMS velocities down to the accepted values. It was also attempted to relate Doppler noise to current velocity, and thus improve the results by subtracting the Doppler noise from the measured RMS velocities in the jet. However, no relationship was found between the Doppler noise and the mean velocity. The effect of different levels of background turbulence on the dynamics and mixing of an axisymmetric turbulent jet at different Reynolds numbers was then investigated. The background turbulence was generated by a random jet array. To confirm that the turbulence is approximately homogeneous and isotropic and has a low mean flow, the background flow was first characterized. Velocity measurements in an axisymmetric jet issuing into two different levels of background turbulence were then conducted. Three different jet Reynolds numbers were tested (Re = UJD/ν, where UJ is the jet exit velocity, D is the exit diameter of the jet, and ν is the kinematic viscosity). The results showed that (compared to the jet in a quiescent ambient) the mean axial velocities decay faster in the presence of background turbulence, while the mean radial velocities increase, especially close to the edges of the jet. At lower Reynolds numbers, the jet structure was destroyed in the near-field of the jet. The increase in the level of the background turbulence resulted in a faster decay of the mean axial velocities. The RMS velocity of the jet issuing into the turbulent background also increased, indicating that the level of turbulence in the jet increases. In addition, the jet's width increased in the presence of the background turbulence. The mass flow rate of the jet decreased in the presence of the background turbulence from which it can be inferred that the entrainment into the jet is reduced. The effect of background turbulence on entrainment mechanisms – large-scale engulfment and small-scale nibbling – is discussed. It is concluded that in the presence of background turbulence, engulfment is expected to be the main entrainment mechanism.<br>L'effet de la turbulence ambiante sur l'évolution d'un jet turbulent est étudié dans le cadre de cette recherche expérimentale. L'objectif primaire de ce travail est l'étude de l'effet de l'intensité de la turbulence ambiante sur l'évolution d'un jet turbulent, à trois nombres de Reynolds différents. L'objectif secondaire est l'amélioration des mesures de vélocimétrie acoustique Doppler qui se sont avérées inexactes au cours de ce travail. Un dispositif à anémométrie à fil chaud volant a aussi été développé pour effectuer des mesures dans le cadre de cette étude. A cette fin, un mécanisme de translation a été conçu pour déplacer la sonde à vitesse constante. Un système d'acquisition de données et des programmes LabVIEW ont été développés pour enregistrer les données et contrôler le mécanisme. De premières expériences (dans un jet turbulent axisymétrique en milieu tranquille) ont prouvé le bien-fondé i) des mesures de vitesses moyenne et moyenne quadratique par anémométrie à fil chaud volant, et ii) des mesures de vitesse moyenne (dans tous le sens) et de vitesse moyenne quadratique (dans le sens z) par vélocimétrie acoustique Doppler. Les mesures par vélocimétrie acoustique Doppler dans les sens x et y étaient surestimées. L'amélioration des mesures de vitesse moyenne quadratique par vélocimétrie acoustique Doppler a été tentée par moyen de techniques de réduction de bruit existantes. Néanmoins, les vitesses moyennes quadratiques restaient surestimées. Une nouvelle technique de réduction de bruit (qui avait pour résultat des vitesses moyennes quadratiques précises) a été proposée dans le cadre de cette étude. En outre, des expériences ayant pour but de quantifier le rapport entre le bruit Doppler et la vitesse de l'écoulement ont été entreprises (pour pouvoir soustraire le bruit Doppler des mesures de vitesses moyennes quadratiques). Cependant, celles-ci n'ont trouvé aucun rapport entre ces deux quantités. Par la suite, l'effet de l'intensité de la turbulence ambiante sur l'évolution d'un jet turbulent axisymétrique, à trois nombres de Reynolds différents, a été étudié. La turbulence ambiante a été produite par moyen d'une maille de jets aléatoires. La turbulence ambiante s'est avérée, par moyen de mesures d'anémométrie à fil chaud volant et de vélocimétrie acoustique Doppler, homogène est isotrope. L'évolution d'un jet turbulent (à trois nombres de Reynolds) émis en milieux turbulents (de deux intensités différentes) a ensuite été étudiée. Les mesures ont démontré que la turbulence ambiante i) réduisait la vitesse axiale moyenne du jet (en augmentant le taux de décroissance), et ii) augmentait la vitesse radiale moyenne du jet (surtout prés du bord du jet). Pour les jets à nombre de Reynolds bas, la structure du jet a été détruite dans le champ proche du jet. Les vitesses moyennes quadratiques du jet émis en milieu turbulent étaient plus grandes, indiquant une croissance du niveau de turbulence dans le jet. En outre, la demi-largeur du jet augmentait en milieu turbulent. Par contre, en environnement turbulent, le débit massique du jet émis a diminué, ce qui implique que le taux d'entraînement du jet est aussi réduit. L'effet de la turbulence ambiante sur les mécanismes de l'entraînement (par engloutissement à grande échelle ou par grignotage) est examiné. Il est conclu que, en environnement turbulent, l'engloutissement est le mécanisme d'entraînement principal.

Ce travail de thèse s'inscrit dans le cadre des études sur les écoulements turbulents gaz-solide et porte sur une étude numérique et une étude expérimentale de jets ronds coaxiaux diphasiques où le rapport des vitesses entre les jets externe et interne est supérieur et inférieur à un. Le but est de contribuer à la caractérisation des interactions entre la phase porteuse gazeuse et la phase dispersée et leur effet sur la modification de l'écoulement porteur. Le premier travail s'appuie sur une simulation de type Eulérienne / Lagrangienne qui résout les équations moyennées de Navier Stokes par la méthode des volumes finis. La turbulence du fluide est traitée par le modèle k-E standard. Le traitement de la phase dispersée consiste à un suivi Lagrangien de particules au sein de l'écoulement d'air. Le chargement en particules est suffisamment important pour que les particules influent sur la phase gazeuse (couplage) mais suffisamment faible pour pouvoir négliger les collisions interparticulaires. Le second travail consiste à réaliser un dispositif expérimental de jet gazeux ensemencé de particules solides (dp=100-212γm) issu d'un injecteur coaxial. L'écoulement diphasique est obtenu en utilisant un système d'ensemencement de particules assurant une injection régulière et homogène des particules dans le jet central. L'originalité de l'expérience consiste à mesurer simultanément les vitesses des particules et du fluide par une méthode optique non intrusive afin d'analyser le couplage entre deux phases. Ces résultats ont été obtenus à l'aide d'une chaîne de mesures optique PDA (Phase Doppler Anémométrie). L'analyse des caractéristiques dynamiques du fluide diphasique dans la zone proche de l'injecteur coaxial met en évidence que la vitesse de l'écoulement chargé est inférieure à la vitesse du fluide sans particules et que la présence des particules amplifie la turbulence du fluide lorsque la vitesse du jet centrale est supérieure à la vitesse du jet annulaire (ru>1). Ainsi, on note un décalage du pic de turbulence vers l'intérieur du jet central. Plus loin la vitesse moyenne du fluide en présence de particules devient supérieure à celle du jet monophasique à cause des transferts de quantité de mouvement des particules vers le fluide et on remarque une atténuation de la turbulence. Par contre, lorsque la vitesse du jet annulaire est supérieure à la vitesse du jet central (ru<1) on remarque une atténuation de la turbulence par la présence des particules et un décalage du pic de turbulence vers l'extérieur du jet central. On peut dire que la présence de particules solides permet à la turbulence de s'installer plus rapidement au sein du fluide pour ru>1. Lorsque ru<1, les particules ont tendance à calmer l'écoulement. Pour examiner l'approche numérique, les comparaisons avec mes travaux expérimentaux ont été réalisés. Les effets observés dans la partie expérimentale ont été reproduits dans deux cas différents (ru>1 et ru<1).

Fundamental aspects of turbulence and turbulent mixing are investigated using direct numerical simulations (DNS) of stationary isotropic turbulence, with Taylor-scale Reynolds numbers ranging from 8 to 650 and Schmidt numbers from 1/8 to 1024. The primary emphasis is on important scaling issues that arise in the study of intermittency, mixing and turbulence under solid-body rotation.
Simulations up to 2048^3 in size have been performed using large resource allocations on Terascale computers
at leading supercomputing centers.
Substantial efforts in algorithmic development have also been undertaken
and resulted in
a new code based on a two-dimensional domain decomposition
which allows
the use of very large number of processors.Benchmark tests indicate
very good parallel performance
for resolutions up to 4096^3 on up to 32768 processors.
Investigation of intermittency through the statistics of
dissipation and enstrophy in a series
of simulations at the same Reynolds number but different
resolution indicate that accurate
results in high-order moments require a higher degree
of fine-scale resolution than commonly practiced.
At the highest Reynolds number in our simulations (400 and 650)
dissipation and enstrophy exhibit
extreme fluctuations of O(1000) the mean
which have not been studied in
the literature before and suggest a universal scaling
of small scales.
Simulations at Reynolds number of 650 on 2048^3 grids
with scalars at Sc=1/8 and 1
have allowed us to obtain the clearest evidence of attainment of
inertial-convective scaling in the scalar spectrum
in numerical simulations to date whereas
results at high Sc support k^{-1} viscous-convective scaling.
Intermittency for scalars as measured by the tail of the PDF of scalar dissipation
and moments of scalar gradient fluctuations is found to saturate at high Sc.
Persistent departures from isotropy are observed as the Reynolds number increases.
However, results suggest a return to isotropy
at high Schmidt numbers, a tendency that appears to be stronger
at high Reynolds numbers.
The effects of the Coriolis force on
turbulence under solid-body rotation are investigated using
simulations on enlarged solution domains which
reduce the effects of
periodic boundary conditions.

A large direct numerical simulation database spanning a wide range of Reynolds and Schmidt number is used to examine fundamental laws governing passive scalar mixing and turbulence structure. Efficient parallel algorithms have been developed to calculate quantities useful in examining the Kolmogorov small-scale phenomenology. These new algorithms are used to analyze data sets with Taylor scale Reynolds numbers as high as 650 with grid-spacing as small as the Kolmogrov length scale. Direct numerical simulation codes using pseudo-spectral methods typically use transpose based three-dimensional (3D) Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT). The ALLTOALL type routines to perform global transposes have a quadratic dependence on message size and typically show limited scaling at very large problem sizes. A hybrid MPI/OpenMP 3D FFT kernel has been developed that divides the work among the threads and schedules them in a pipelined fashion. All threads perform the communication, although not concurrently, with the aim of minimizing thread-idling time and increasing the overlap between communication and computation. The new algorithm is seen to reduce the communication time by as much as 30% at large core-counts, as compared to pure-MPI communication. Turbulent mixing is important in a wide range of fields ranging from combustion to cosmology. Schmidt numbers range from O(1) to O(0.01) in these applications. The Schmidt number dependence of the second-order scalar structure function and the applicability of the so-called Yaglomﾒs relation is examined in isotropic turbulence with a uniform mean scalar gradient. At the moderate Reynolds numbers currently achievable, the dynamics of strongly diffusive scalars is inherently different from moderately diffusive Schmidt numbers. Results at Schmidt number as low as 1/2048 show that the range of scales in the scalar field become quite narrow with the distribution of the small-scales approaching a Gaussian shape. A much weaker alignment between velocity gradients and principal strain rates and a strong departure from Yaglomﾒs relation have also been observed. Evaluation of different terms in the scalar structure function budget equation assuming statistical stationarity in time shows that with decreasing Schmidt number, the production and diffusion terms dominate at the intermediate scales possibly leading to non-universal behavior for the low-to-moderate Peclet number regime considered in this study. One of the few exact, non-trivial results in hydrodynamic theory is the so-called Kolmogorov 4/5th law. Agreement for the third order longitudinal structure function with the 4/5 plateau is used to measure the extent of the inertial range, both in experiments and simulations. Direct numerical simulation techniques to obtain the third order structure structure functions typically use component averaging, combined with time averaging over multiple eddy-turnover times. However, anisotropic large scale effects tend to limit the inertial range with significant variance in the components of the structure functions in the intermediate scale ranges along the Cartesian directions. The net result is that the asymptotic 4/5 plateau is not attained. Motivated by recent theoretical developments we present an efficient parallel algorithm to compute spherical averages in a periodic domain. The spherically averaged third-order structure function is shown to attain the K41 plateau in time-local fashion, which decreases the need for running direct numerical simulations for multiple eddy-turnover times. It is well known that the intermittent character of the energy dissipation rate leads to discrepancies between experiments and theory in calculating higher order moments of velocity increments. As a correction, the use of three-dimensional local averages has been proposed in the literature. Kolmogorov used the local 3D averaged dissipation rate to propose a refined similarity theory. An algorithm to calculate 3D local averages has been developed which is shown to scale well up to 32k cores. The algorithm, computes local averages over overlapping regions in space for a range of separation distances, resulting in N^3 samples of the locally averaged dissipation for each averaging length. In light of this new calculation, the refined similarity theory of Kolmogorov is examined using the 3D local averages at high Reynolds number and/or high resolution.

Resolving the small-scale streaks in viscous boundary layers require excessively refined, isotropic grids beyond the capability of all but the most powerful supercomputing facilities. This thesis contributes to the widespread effort in developing hybrid turbulence closures, which aim to reduce near-wall resolution requirements yet maintain turbulence-resolving capability in free-shear flow regions. This thesis evaluated the performance of an Implicit Large-Eddy Simulation (ILES) approach implemented within a very high-order accurate framework for a structured finite-volume, compressible solver. A new hybrid RANS-ILES model was proposed and systematically developed using hybrid length-scale modifications, a blending function, a boundary layer detection variable and a smoothing function. Different formulations for each of these mechanisms were numerically assessed, classified and eliminated to form the most optimal algorithm. This avoids some limitations of eddy-viscosity based subgrid-scale models used in conventional Large-Eddy Simulation and reduces case-specific calibration. The RANS-ILES hybrid model was used to simulate turbulent boundary layers highlighting its robust performance even on grids designed to induce Modelled-Stress Depletion. Under-resolved ILES results were degraded compared to URANS for such grids. Two Reynolds number regimes were used for flow around a cylinder and force coefficients, separation angles, wake profiles and shedding frequencies agreed well with past hybrid models, LES and experiments. The auxiliary transport equation successfully identified turbulent and non-turbulent regions in two automotive test cases. Surface pressures agreed well with experiments and a commercial LBM solver, despite some modelling simplifications. These simulations also leveraged high-order numerics and accurately predicted dominant spectral modes and coherent structures.

Les premières simulations numériques d'écoulements réactifs sur des configurationscomplexes ont été réalisées à l'aide d'approches RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes). Ces dernières, bien adaptées aux écoulements de type couches limites attachées et relativement peu coûteuses en temps de calcul, ne donnent accès qu'à des résultats stationnaires qui s'éloignent parfois de la réalité. Pour réaliser des simulations instationnaires d'écoulements, les méthodes de type LES (Large Eddy Simulation) -- plus précises mais plus coûteuses -- sont de plus en plus utilisées. Cependant, ces méthodes sont mal adaptées à la simulation de la dynamique pariétale, car elles nécessitent un effort de maillage souvent prohibitif près de la paroi. Cette thèse est consacrée au développement dans le code CEDRE (code de simulation d'écoulements réactifs complexes de l'Onera) d'une méthode hybride RANS/LES, appelée Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES), et à son application à des écoulements réactifs massivement décollés. Après une étape de validation sur des couches limites attachées, la DDES a été appliquée à la simulation des écoulements inerte et réactif dans une chambre de combustion en forme de marche descendante (A3C) et comparée aux résultats des approches RANS et LES classiques, ainsi qu'aux résultats expérimentaux. Cette méthode a ensuite permis de réaliser l'étude de la dynamique de l'écoulement réactif décollé dans la tuyère ATAC montée sur le banc cryotechnique MASCOTTE de l'Onera.

Ces travaux visent a caracteriser experimentalement le courant de derive induit par le vent dans la couche superficielle de l'eau, afin de mieux comprendre les mecanismes physiques responsables de sa generation et de son developpement. Des experiences de visualisation a but essentiellement qualitatif et des experiences de mesures dans l'eau realisees au moyen d'un velocimetre laser doppler ont ete entreprises dans l'une des souffleries de simulations des interactions ocean-atmosphere de l'i. M. S. T. Nous avons ainsi montre l'existence, commune a toute couche limite classique, de trois phases distinctes caracterisant la generation du courant de derive, a savoir une phase laminaire, une phase de transition precedee d'une phase instable, et une phase turbulente. Dans la phase laminaire, le courant de derive peut etre assimile a une couche limite acceleree soumise a une tension constante exercee par le vent et peut etre caracterise par un profil de vitesse auto-similaire. Dans la phase instable se developpent des instabilites tridimensionnelles qui ne peuvent s'amplifier rapidement au sein de cette couche limite laminaire acceleree. A partir d'un fetch critique apparaissent brutalement des bouffees turbulentes dans lesquelles l'ecoulement est brusquement decelere. L'epaisseur de la couche limite y augmente tres rapidement. Une grande diffusion turbulente confere alors a la transition un caractere explosif. Ce dernier provient principalement de la specificite de cette couche limite a interface libre, plus instable qu'une couche limite de paroi rigide. Par ailleurs, le couplage entre les mouvements de l'interface et l'ecoulement dans l'eau est controle par des interactions entre les vagues et le courant moyen soumis a de forts gradients de vitesse horizontaux

L'action des riblets sur une couche limite turbulente a ete etudiee depuis de nombreuses annees deja, et il semble maintenant bien etabli que des rainures longitudinales a la paroi permettent d'obtenir des reductions de trainee pouvant atteindre 10%. Cependant, les mecanismes physiques responsables de la stabilisation de l'ecoulement ne sont pas encore bien connus, et les modelisations numeriques ne sont pas fiables. Le but de ce travail experimental et numerique est d'etudier le comportement d'une couche limite turbulente sur une paroi munie de rainures triangulaires, afin de comprendre les processus qui interviennent dans le mecanisme de reduction de trainee. Les experiences sont menees en tunnel hydrodynamique. Des mesures ponctuelles sont effectuees par velocimetrie laser doppler. Les trois composantes de la vitesse moyenne et le champ turbulent sont determines, certaines de ces mesures etant meme realisees a l'interieur des rainures. La partie numerique consiste a developper des programmes en utilisant des hypotheses de fermeture simple basees sur une longueur de melange. Les resultats sont compares a ceux obtenus experimentalement. Les principaux resultats sont les suivants: i) les etudes numeriques ont abouti a des variations de trainee superieures a celles habituellement obtenues experimentalement; ii) la viscosite semble etre tres importante dans le processus de reduction de trainee turbulente: dans un premier temps, les effets visqueux equilibrent la tres grande augmentation de surface, alors l'action sur les structures de la turbulence conduit aux reductions de trainee observees

Le transport de particules par des écoulements turbulents est un phénomène présent dans de nombreux écoulements naturels et industriels, tels que la dispersion de polluants dans l'atmosphère ou du phytoplancton et plastiques dans et à la surface des océans. Les modèles prédictifs classiques ne peuvent prévoir avec précision la formation de larges fluctuations de concentrations. La première partie de cette thèse concerne une étude de la dispersion turbulente de traceurs émis à partir d'une source ponctuelle et continue. Les fluctuations spatiales de masse sont déterminées en fonction de la distance à la source et à l'échelle d'observation. La combinaison de plusieurs phénomènes physiques à l'origine du mélange limite la validité d'une caractérisation de géométrie fractale. Une approche alternative est proposée, permettant d'interpréter les fluctuations massiques en terme des différents régimes de séparation de pair dans des écoulements turbulents. La seconde partie concerne des particules ayant une inertie finie, dont la dispersion dans l'espace des vitesses requiert de développer des techniques de modélisation adaptées. Une méthode numérique originale est proposée pour exprimer la distribution des particules dans l'espace position-vitesse. Cette méthode est ensuite utilisée pour décrire la modulation de la turbulence bi- dimensionnelle par des particules inertielles. A grand nombres de Stokes, l'effet montré est analogue à celui d'une friction effective à grande échelle. Aux petits Stokes, le spectre de l'énergie cinétique du fluide et les transferts non-linéaires sont modifiées d'une manière non triviale<br>The transport of particles by turbulent flows is ubiquitous in nature and industry. It occurs in planet formation, plankton dynamics and combustion in engines. For the dispersion of atmospheric pollutants, traditional predictive models based on eddy diffusivity cannot accurately reproduce high concentration fluctuations, which are of primal importance for ecological and health issues. The first part of this thesis relates to the dispersion by turbulence of tracers continuously emitted from a point source. Mass fluctuations are characterized as a function of the distance from the source and of the observation scale. The combination of various physical mixing processes limits the use of fractal geometric tools. An alternative approach is proposed, allowing to interpret mass fluctuations in terms of the various regimes of pair separation in turbulent flows. The second part concerns particles with a finite and possibly large inertia, whose dispersion in velocity requires developing efficient modelling techniques. A novel numerical method is proposed to express inertial particles distribution in the position-velocity phase space. Its convergence is validated by comparison to Lagrangian measurements. This method is then used to describe the modulation of two-dimensional turbulence by large-Stokes-number heavy particles. At high inertia, the effect is found to be analogous to an effective large-scale friction. At small Stokes numbers, kinetic energy spectrum and nonlinear transfers are shown to be modified in a non-trivial way which relates to the development of instabilities at vortices boundaries

Améliorer la représentation de la couche limite stable constitue un des grands challenges de la prévision numérique du temps et du climat. Sa représentation est clé pour la prévision du brouillard, du gel des surfaces, des inversions de température, du jet de basse couche et des épisodes de pollution. De plus, à l'échelle climatique, la hausse de la température moyenne globale de l'air en surface impacte davantage les régions polaires : améliorer la représentation de la couche limite stable est un enjeu important pour réduire les incertitudes autour des projections climatiques. Depuis une quinzaine d'années, les exercices d'intercomparaison de modèles GABLS ont montré que le mélange turbulent dans la couche limite stable est généralement surestimé par les modèles de prévision du temps. En effet, de nombreux modèles intensifient artificiellement l'activité de leur schéma de turbulence afin d'éviter une décroissance inévitable du mélange lorsque la stabilité dépasse un seuil critique en terme de nombre de Richardson gradient. Ce problème numérique et théorique n'est pas en accord avec de nombreuses observations et simulations à haute résolution qui montrent une activité turbulente séparée en deux régimes : un régime faiblement stable dans lequel l'atmosphère est turbulente de manière continue et intense, et un régime très stable dans lequel la turbulence est très intermittente, anisotrope et faible en intensité. Ces travaux de thèse s'articulent autour de deux parties dont l'objectif principal est d'améliorer la paramétrisation de la turbulence dans le modèle atmosphérique de recherche Méso-NH développé conjointement par Météo-France et le Laboratoire d'Aérologie, et dans le modèle opérationnel AROME. Cette étude utilise une méthodologie communément employée dans le développement de paramétrisations qui consiste à comparer des simulations à très haute résolution qui résolvent les structures turbulentes les plus énergétiques (LES) à des simulations uni-colonnes d'un modèle méso-échelle. Plusieurs simulations 3D couvrant différents régimes de stabilité de l'atmosphère sont réalisées avec Méso-NH. Les limites du modèle LES en stratification stable sont documentées. Une première partie répond à la problématique de la surestimation du mélange dans le régime faiblement stable. Une expression originale pour la longueur de mélange est formulée. La longueur de mélange est un paramètre clé pour les schémas de turbulence associés à une équation pronostique pour l'énergie cinétique turbulente. Cette longueur de mélange non-locale combine un terme de cisaillement vertical du vent horizontal à une formulation existante qui repose sur la flottabilité. Le nouveau schéma est évalué dans des simulations 1D par rapport aux LES d'une part ; et dans le modèle opérationnel AROME par rapport aux observations de l'ensemble du réseau opérationnel de Météo-France d'autre part. Une deuxième partie apporte des éléments d'évaluation d'un schéma combinant deux équations pronostiques pour les énergies cinétiques et potentielles turbulentes. En condition stable, le flux de chaleur négatif contribue à la production d'énergie potentielle turbulente. L'interaction entre les deux équations d'évolution permet, via une meilleure prise en compte de l'anisotropie et d'un terme à contre gradient dans le flux de chaleur, de limiter la destruction de l'énergie turbulente dans les modèles. Dans les cas simulés, cette nouvelle formulation ne montre pas un meilleur comportement par rapport à un schéma à une équation pour l'énergie cinétique turbulente car le mécanisme d'auto-préservation n'est pas dominant par rapport au terme de dissipation. Il conviendra d'améliorer la paramétrisation du terme de dissipation dans le régime très stable<br>The modeling of the stable atmospheric boundary layer is one of the current challenge faced by weather and climate models. The stable boundary layer is a key for the prediction of fog, surface frost, temperature inversion, low-level jet and pollution peaks. Furthermore, polar regions, where stable boundary layer predominates, are one of the region with the largest temperature rise : the stable boundary layer modeling is crucial for the reduction of the spread of climate predictions. Since more than 15 years, the GABLS models intercomparison exercices have shown that turbulent mixing in the stable boundary layer is overestimated by numerical weather prediction models. Numerous models artificially strengthen the activity of their turbulence scheme to avoid a laminarization of the flow at a critical value of the gradient Richardson number. The existence of this threshold is only a theoretical and a numerical issues. Numerous observations and high-resolution numerical simulations do not support this concept and show two different regimes : the weakly stable boundary layer that is continuously and strongly turbulent; and the very stable boundary layer globally intermittent with a highly anisotropic and very weak turbulence. This thesis aims at improving the turbulence scheme within the atmospheric research model Méso-NH developped by Météo-France and the Laboratoire d'Aérologie, and the operational weather forecast model AROME. We use a traditional methodology based on the comparison of high-resolution simulations that dynamically resolve the most energetic turbulent eddies (Large-Eddy Simulations) to single-column simulations. Several LES covering the weakly and the very stable boundary layer were performed with Méso-NH. The limits of applicability of LES in stratified conditions are documented. The first part of the study deals with the overmixing in the weakly stable boundary layer. We propose a new diagnostic formulation for the mixing length which is a key parameter for turbulence schemes based on a prognostic equation for the turbulent kinetic energy. The new formulation adds a local vertical wind shear term to a non-local buoyancy-based mixing length currently used in Méso-NH and in the French operational model AROME. The new scheme is evaluated first in single-column simulations with Méso-NH and compared to LES, and then in the AROME model with respect to observations collected from the operational network of Météo-France. The second part presents a theoretical and numerical evaluation of a turbulence scheme based on two prognostic equations for the turbulent kinetic and potentiel energies. In stratified conditions, the heat flux contributes to the production of turbulent potential energy. The laminarization of the flow is then limited by a reduction of the destruction of the turbulent kinetic energy by a better representation of the anisotropy and a counter-gradient term in the heat flux. On the simulated cases, this new formulation behaves similarly than the scheme with one equation for the turbulent kinetic energy because the self-preservation mechanism is not dominant compared to the dissipation term. Further research should improve the turbulent kinetic energy dissipation closure in the very stable regime

L'objectif principal de ce travail est d'analyser les effets d'un gradient de pression défavorable modéré sur la dynamique d'écoulement d'une couche limite turbulente. Dans ce contexte, une simulation numérique directe (DNS) de la couche limite turbulente (TBL) soumise à un gradient de pression défavorable modéré (APG) hors équilibre a été réalisée jusqu'à un Reynolds de 8000 en utilisant le code open-source Incompact3d. Une large base de données résolues en temps et en espace a été collectée et utilisée pour analyser les statistiques de la turbulence. Une attention particulière a été consacrée à l'existence et à l'évolution du pic de contraintes de Reynolds observé dans la zone externe de la couche limite. Différentes échelles de vitesse ont été étudiées, testées et confrontées aux résultats numériques. L'échelle de vitesse basée sur la contrainte de cisaillement permet de mettre à l'échelle tous les profils de contraintes de Reynolds pour plusieurs nombres de Reynolds, ce qui indique que toutes les contraintes de Reynolds sont associées à une dynamique unique des structures turbulentes.Les structures cohérentes à grande échelle des fluctuations de vitesse longitudinales ont été étudiées en utilisant la corrélation spatiale en deux points. Une comparaison avec un cas sans gradient de pression à un nombre de Reynolds équivalent nous permet d'étudier l'effet du gradient de pression sur la taille et l'inclinaison des structures cohérentes attachées. Une étude approfondie sur les structures cohérentes a également été réalisée, où chaque structure a été détectée séparément en utilisant une méthode de seuillage afin de distinguer les effets des grandes et petites échelles et de mieux comprendre les mécanismes qui contrôlent la dynamique de ces structures. La contribution des mouvements de grande échelle (LSM) sur les contraintes de Reynolds en comparaison avec le cas ZPG a également été analysée<br>The main objective of this work is to analyze the effects of a moderate adverse pressure gradient on the dynamics of turbulent boundary layer flows. For that purpose, a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the turbulent boundary layer (TBL) subjected to a moderate adverse pressure gradient (APG) out of equilibrium has been performed using the open-source code Incompact3d up to a Reynolds number of 8000 based on momentum thickness. A large database resolved in time and space was collected and used to analyze the turbulence statistics. Special attention has been paid to the existence and evolution of the outer peak of Reynolds stresses observed in APG wall-bounded flows. Different velocity scalings have been investigated and tested against the numerical results. The velocity scale based on the shear stress is shown to scale all the Reynolds stresses profiles for different Reynolds numbers, indicating that all Reynolds stresses are associated with a single dynamics of turbulent structures.The large-scale coherent structures of the streamwise velocity fluctuations have been investigated using two-point spatial correlation. A comparison with a zero pressure gradient case at an equivalent Reynolds number allows us to further investigate the effect of the pressure gradient on the size and inclination of attached coherent structures. A deeper investigation of the coherent structures was also performed, where each structure was detected separately based on a thresholding method to distinguish between the effects of large and small scales and to better understand the mechanisms controlling the dynamics of these structures. The contribution of large-scale motions (LSM) on the Reynolds stresses comparing with ZPG case was also analyzed

In this thesis, Rossby waves are considered within the one-layer Charney-Hasegawa-Mima (CHM) equation and two-layer quasi-geostrophic (QG) model. They are studied from a wave turbulence (WT) perspective. Since nonlinearity is quadratic, interactions take place between triplets of waves known as triads. A triad is said to be resonant if its wave vectors and frequencies satisfy k1 + k2 - k3 = 0 and w(k1)+w(k2)-w(k3) = 0 respectively. These triads can then be joined together to form resonant clusters of various sizes. The wave vectors can be continuous, in an unbounded domain, or discrete, in a bounded domain. Continuous, otherwise known as kinetic, WT has been extensively studied in the one-layer case. It is known that three quadratic invariants exist and they take part in a triple cascade in k-space. This thesis is interested in �finding quadratic invariants, of which there can be many, in the discrete regime. It begins by considering discrete clusters of resonant triads arising from a Hamiltonian three-wave equation. A cluster consists of N modes forming a total of M connected triads. It is shown that that finding quadratic invariants is equivalent to a basic linear algebra problem, consisting of fi�nding the null space of a rectangular M x N matrix A with entries 1, -1 and 0. An algorithm is then formulated for decomposing large clusters into smaller ones to show how the quadratic invariants are related to topological parts of the cluster. Speci�c examples of clusters arising in the CHM wave model are considered. The second part of this thesis focusses on the large-scale limit of the CHM equation. This limit has been studied the least; however, it would appear to be more relevant since Rossby waves in the ocean are large-scale. Recently a new quadratic invariant, known as semi-action, has been discovered in this limit. Its density is one in the meridional region |ky|< /3kx and zero in the zonal region |ky|> /3kx: As a consequence of the conservation of semi-action, conditions are placed on the triad interactions involving zonal (Z) and meridional (M) modes. In this thesis it is proved directly, without appealing to conservation, that the following triad interactions are prohibited: M -> M +M,M -> Z + Z,Z -> M + Z and Z -> M +M: The cascade directions are studied of the three invariants, the energy, enstrophy and, depending whether the initial spectrum is in the meridional or zonal sector, the semi-action or zonsotrophy respectively. The results are interpreted to explain the formation of unisotropic turbulence with dominating zonal scales. In the �nal part of this thesis, a symmetric form of the two-layer kinetic equation for Rossby waves is derived using canonical variables, allowing the turbulent cascade of energy between the barotropic and baroclinic modes to be studied. It turns out that energy is transferred via local triad interactions from large-scale baroclinic modes to the baroclinic and barotropic modes at the Rossby deformation scale. From there it is transferred into large-scale barotropic modes via a non-local inverse transfer.

Seed-Turbulence-Iteration explores the aesthetic application of chaos and fractal geometry onto the musical parameters of a work constructed for chamber orchestra. Verhulst's Logistic Map and Devaney's Gingerbreadman Map are the dynamic systems from which melodic contour and temporal duration are derived. These algorithms are used to produce heterophonic and polyphonic results that iterate for a set duration before restarting. Each new beginning involves a change in density (of individual lines, as well as points of articulation in time), orchestration, register, and the pitch reservoir. All pitches are derived from a quantized spectrum that interpolates from a state of harmonicity to inharmonicity across a series of changing fundamentals. Each stage of interpolation coincides with the reseting of algorithmic iterations. Self-similarity and self-affinity are represented vertically, in the family resemblances of the lines produced within each algorithm that occur inside of a given segment, as well as horizontally, in the reiterations that occur over time. Each algorithmic reiteration and each copy within a set of iterations has varied starting or “seed” conditions that produce differentiated results of greater or lesser degrees which are presented in non-linear, strategic arrangement. Turbulence is implemented in the form of probabilistic distortions inserted into algorithmic processes that are meant to vary to some degree the amount of unpredictability of an output parameter (pitch or duration) as well as in intuitive manipulations of algorithmically generated material.

Pas de résumé<br>In order to give a general statistical description of turbulence, one tries to identify universal statistical features, common to a wider class of turbulent flows. In 1988, Kraichnan and Panda discovered one such possibly universal feature, namely, the fact that Navier-Stokes turbulence tends to reduce the strength of the nonlinearity in its governing equations. In the flrst part of the manuscript we consider the strength of the nonlinear term and, more precisely, of its fluctuations in isotropic turbulence. In order to measure this strength, we compare to the case of a flow fleld with the same energy distribution where the modes are statistically independent, as is the case in Gaussian noise. It is shown that the turbulent flow self-organizes towards a state in which the nonlinearity is reduced, and it is discussed what the implications of this reduction are. Also, in two dimensions it is illustrated how this self-organization manifests itself through the appearance of well-deflned vortical flow structures. In the second part of the manuscript, we investigate the dynamics of the Hasegawa- Wakatani model, a model relevant in the study of magnetically conflned fusion plasmas. The two-dimensional version of this model is considered, which includes some key features of the turbulent dynamics of a tokamak-edge. We consider the limit of the model in which the nonlinearity is reduced with respect to the linear forces. For this weakly nonlinear, wave dominated regime, analytical predictions suggest the presence of a feedback loop in which energy is transferred to highly anisotropic zonal flows by nonlocal interactions. We confirm these predictions and we demonstrate a strong suppression of the turbulent radial particle flux. In wall bounded geometry, the same mechanism is observed and here also the flux is eflciently reduced by the turbulence-zonal flow interaction

The structure of a stable smooth wall zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer is investigated experimentally in order to determine the dominant outer region structure and to develop a hypothetical generalized boundary layer flow model. Three hot wire configurations, two vertically separated X-wires and a leading straight wire, a horizontal rake of 5 straight wires, and a vertical rake of 5 straight wires were used in the experiments,
conducted at Reɵ = 8200. The basis for data reduction procedures came from crosscorrelations and the Variable Interval Time Average (VITA) technique.
Three structure types are reported in the literature to be important: streaks and counter rotating streamwise vorticity, wall scaled hairpins or ring vortices, and large scale (0(ઠ)) bulges. A simple pictorial model consisting of three Reɵ dependent interdeveloping stages, which integrate all three structure types, is presented and discussed in relation to the literature and experiments performed. The rake data indicate that the positive ([formula omitted]u/[formula omitted]t) VITA detected velocity front has a scale much larger than that of the wall scaled eddies which typically have a scale of 100-300 y[formula omitted], and that this velocity front exhibits characteristics that are consistent with the trailing velocity front described in the model. The general convection velocity from basic crosscorrelations and the convection velocity of the positive VITA detected velocity front both had values 90-100% of the local mean velocity over most of the boundary layer. Evidence of small scale structure concentration on the downstream edge of the trailing velocity front is presented. A new method used to determine the average structure inclination angle associated with the trailing velocity front is presented and demonstrates that the generalized structure inclination angle, calculated from basic crosscorrelations between vertically separated
sensors, does not indicate structure shape, but is associated with the bulk flow associated with the structure. The new method appears to give results that are consistent with flow visualization and more accurately estimates the inclination angle associated with the most dominant feature of the outer flow, the positive VITA velocity front. An investigation of the flame structure and radiation properties of turbulent hydrogen/air diffusion flames is reported. The laminar flamelet-conserved scalar probability density function approach is used to predict the scalar distributions throughout a laboratory-scale axisymmetric buoyant hydrogen diffusion flame. Predictions are compared with published measurements of mean and root mean square (RMS) temperatures and species concentrations based on the laminar flamelet concept. Predictions of spectral intensity and received heat flux are made with a narrow-band radiation model using mean properties, stochastic and mean emission methods to evaluate the effects of turbulence radiation interactions (TRI) and modelling TRI to predict the received radiant heat flux was very important. The predictions were, on the whole in good agreement with published measured data available in the open literature. Present study centres on the development of novel numerical models to predict TRI in turbulent hydrogen flames, implemented in a sophisticated way using enthalpy perturbation equation to account for radiative heat loss. This thesis highlights novel accomplishments in areas such as modelling lifted hydrogen jet flames, flame structures and external radiation fields where significant findings are reported. Firstly, successful extension of the lift-off model to hydrogen jet flames using strain rate as stretch parameter to accurately predict the lift-off height and affirming the smallscale strain rate model is better than the large-scale strain rate model which is different to methane lifted jet flames. Secondly, different jet flames were investigated using two different probability density functions (PDFs) and two transport equations taking into account fluctuations of temperature T ¢2 and water vapours 2 2 H O X¢ . The new Truncated Gaussian PDF was confirmed to give better predictions than other methods. Lastly, of the three approaches considered in modelling TRI the stochastic method proved the most accurate to predict the spectral intensity distribution and radiative heat flux distribution.

This thesis focuses on two important issues in turbulence theory of wall-bounded flows. One is the recent debate on the form of the mean velocity profile (is it a log-law or a power-law with very weak power exponent?) and on its scalings with Reynolds number. In particular, this study relates the mean flow profile of the turbulent channel flow with the underlying topological structure of the fluctuating velocity field through the concept of critical points, a dynamical systems concept that is a natural way to quantify the multiscale structure of turbulence. This connection gives a new phenomenological picture of wall-bounded turbulence in terms of the topology of the flow. This theory validated against existing data, indicates that the issue on the form of the mean velocity profile at the asymptotic limit of infinite Reynolds number could be resolved by understanding the scaling of turbulent kinetic energy with Reynolds number. The other major issue addressed here is on the fundamental mechanism(s) of viscoelastic turbulence that lead to the polymer-induced turbulent drag reduction phenomenon and its dynamical aspects. A great challenge in this problem is the computation of viscoelastic turbulent flows, since the understanding of polymer physics is restricted to mechanical models. An effective numerical method to solve the governing equation for polymers modelled as nonlinear springs, without using any artificial assumptions as usual, was implemented here for the first time on a three-dimensional channel flow geometry. The superiority of this algorithm is depicted on the results, which are much closer to experimental observations. This allowed a more detailed study of the polymer-turbulence dynamical interactions, which yields a clearer picture on a mechanism that is governed by the polymer-turbulence energy transfers.

Coastal zones are governed by physical forces originating from tidal currents, waves, winds and night convection, amongst others, and are characterized by the presence of canopy meadows. This thesis studies the hydrodynamic in a fluid dominated by: nearly isotropic turbulence, progressive waves and breaking waves in different canopy models. Under nearly isotropic turbulence sheltering is enhanced by a reduction in the plant-to-plant distance. Under progressive waves sheltering is associated with the reduction of wave velocity at the top of submerged rigid canopy. Sheltering observed in the submerged flexible model is caused by blade movement which absorbes the energy. Emergent rigid vegetation shows sheltering. On the other hand, for some specific progressive wave conditions and plant densities and under a fluid dominated by breaking waves, turbulence increases within the meadow if Reynolds number, based on wave velocity, is larger than 300<br>Les zones costeres estan governades per forces físiques originades per la marea, l’onatge, i la convecció nocturna, entre d’altres, i caracteritzades per la presència de plantes aquàtiques. Cette thèse est consacrée au mécanisme conduisant à des taux de collisions importants dans les suspensions turbulentes de particules inertielles. Le travail a été effectué en suivant numériquement des particules, par simulations directes des équations de Navier-Stokes, et également par étude de modèles simplifiés. Les applications de ce domaine sont nombreuses aussi bien dans un contexte industriel que naturel (astrophysique, géophysique). L'approximation des collisions fantômes (ACF), souvent utilisée pour déterminer les taux de collision numériquement, consiste à compter dans une simulation, le nombre de fois que la distance entre les centres de deux particules devient plus faible qu'une distance seuil. Plusieurs arguments théoriques suggéreraient que cette approximation conduit à une surestimation du taux de collision. Cette thèse fournit non seulement une estimation quantitative de cette surestimation, mais également une compréhension détaillée des mécanismes des erreurs faites par l'ACF. Nous trouvons qu'une paire de particules peut subir des collisions répétées avec une grande probabilité. Ceci est relié à l'observation que, dans un écoulement turbulent, certaines paires de particules peuvent rester proches pendant très longtemps. Une deuxième classe de résultats obtenus dans cette thèse a permis une compréhension quantitative des très forts taux de collisions souvent observés. Nous montrons que lorsque l'inertie des particules n'est pas très petite, l'effet " fronde/caustiques ", à savoir, l'éjection de particules par des tourbillons intenses, est responsable du taux de collision élevé. En comparaison, la concentration préférentielle de particules dans certaines régions de l'espace joue un rôle mineur.

Le climat de la Terre dépend en grande partie des échanges énergétiques entre les masses d’eau chaudes et froides de nos océans. Afin de prédire et de comprendre les variations de notre climat, les modèles numériques globaux de l’océan doivent pouvoir déterminer quelle fraction d'énergie est convertie en mélange irréversible dans un écoulement turbulent et stablement stratifié. Il apparaît que cette fraction est sensible aux paramètres de l’écoulement, ce qui a récemment conduit les océanographes à remettre en question la paramétrisation d'Osborn pour le coefficient de diffusion turbulente kz, qui utilise une efficacité de mélange constante et fixée à ŋ=0,17. Ceci nous a poussé à réaliser au laboratoire de Mécanique des Fluides et d'Acoustique (LMFA) des mesures conjointes de ŋ et kz, afin de mieux comprendre leur inter-dépendance. Cette étude est avant tout expérimentale et se base sur plusieurs dispositifs permettant de quantifier le mélange dans différents types d'écoulement. Trois de ses expériences ont été réalisées au LMFA : une expérience de lock-exchange dans laquelle le mélange est issu du cisaillement à l'interface de deux courants de gravité se déplaçant en sens opposés, une expérience de grille tractée dans un fluide stratifié et une expérience d’injection de stratification dans la grille d’un canal hydraulique. Ce travail a été complété, d'une part par une collaboration sur la plateforme Coriolis du LEGI à Grenoble, permettant d’atteindre de plus grands nombres de Reynolds ; et d'autre part par une campagne de mesure in situ dans le fjord du Saguenay au Canada en collaboration avec l'ISMER, visant à estimer le mélange turbulent conduisant au renouvellement des eaux profondes du fjord, à partir de l'analyse de transects successifs de densité. Dans ces différentes configurations, l'évolution temporelle des profils verticaux de densité ont permis d'analyser la dépendance du coefficient de diffusion turbulente et de l'efficacité de mélange avec les nombres de Reynolds et de Froude. Nos résultats ont permis de quantifier la décroissance de l'efficacité de mélange avec l'augmentation du nombre de Froude dans un écoulement turbulent, ainsi que la sensibilité du coefficient de diffusion turbulente aux nombres de Froude et de Reynolds de flottabilité. L'utilisation de trois dispositifs expérimentaux différents permet de montrer qu'au-delà de ces lois dites universelles, la variabilité propre à chaque géométrie influence fortement les valeurs de l'efficacité de mélange. Ceci est particulièrement mis en lumière dans la configuration de lock-exchange, pour laquelle la valeur limite de ŋ=0.25 prédite par la physique statistique n'est atteinte que dans une configuration fortement tri-dimensionnelle, jusqu'alors peu utilisée dans la littérature. Enfin, toutes les méthodes d'analyse développées pour les expériences de laboratoire ont pu être utilisées pour l'analyse des données in situ, permettant de clore ce travail de thèse sur une étude environnementale<br>Our climate partly depends on energy exchange between warm and cold water masses in the ocean's interior. In order to understand and forecast the climate variations, numerical models of the ocean must estimate the amount of energy converted into irreversible mixing in turbulent stably stratified flows. It seems that this quantity depends on the flow parameters. This assertion challenges the famous Osborn model for turbulent diffusivity kz which uses a fixed mixing efficiency of ŋ=0.17. This motivated us to measure separately kz and ŋ in order to obtain a better understanding of their inter-dependencies. The present work is an experimental study based on set-ups which enable to quantify the mixing in different types of flow. Three of those experiments are held in our lab (LMFA) and consist respectively in a lock-exchange experiment where mixing is generated by the shear at the interface of two opposite gravity currents, a stratified towed grid experiment, and a hydraulic channel experiment where the stratification is injected directly by the grid. This study has been complemented with two international collaborations. The first one, on the Coriolis platform (LEGI) consisted in a stratified towed grid experiment in a rotating tank allowing to broaden our parameter spectrum. The second one is a series of in situ measurements led in collaboration with ISMER in the Saguenay fjord (Canada) aiming at measuring density transects over time in order to quantify the turbulent mixing that participates in the renewal of the fjord's deep water. In all of those configurations, dependencies of mixing efficiency and turbulent diffusivity along with the Froude and the Reynolds numbers are extracted from the time evolution of density profiles. In our results, we were able to quantify the decay of the mixing efficiency with the increase of the Froude number. We also highlighted the sensitivity of turbulent diffusivity on the buoyancy Reynolds number. We used three different experimental setups to show that beyond the so called universal turbulence laws, the flow geometry has a huge impact on the mixing efficiency values. This is especially true in the lock-exchange configuration where the asymptotic value of ŋ=0.25, predicted by statistical physics, can only be reached in a set-up which allows 3D flows. Such investigations are still scarce in the literature. Finally, all the data analysis methods developed for the lab experiments were of great help for the analysis of in situ data and thereby enabled us to consider a real-life environnemental flow

L'objectif de ce travail est la prédiction numérique d'écoulements turbulents tridimensionnels de fluide newtonien et incompressible à l'aide des modèles non-linéaires de turbulence. Les modèles de turbulence explicites à contraintes algébriques non -linéaires, qui peuvent prendre en compte l'anisotropie de la turbulence avec moins de temps de calculs et moins de place mémoire de stockage que les modèles RSM ou les approches DNS et LES, sont adoptés. Parmi ces modèles, ceux proposés par Shih et al. (1995) et Craft et al. (1996) ont été choisis. Ces deux modèles EASM sont étudiés en utilisant des procédures a priori et a posteriori. L'étude est menée dans une conduite à section carrée, configuration qui présente d'une part, une anisotropie importante entre les composantes du tenseur de Reynolds et d'autre part, un écoulement secondaire. Pour prédire les effets visqueux importants dus à la présence des parois, des fonctions correctrices sont façonnées. La production des cartes des second et troisième invariant dans le plan de Lumley montre les différents états possible de la turbulence et une bonne prédiction de l' anisotropie. La comparaison des grandeurs moyennes et statistiques de l'écoulement prédites avec les données numériques et expérimentales présentes dans la littérature montre une bonne performance de ces modèles. En particulier, les vecteurs du flux secondaire et la vorticité longitudinale sont bien prédits<br>The aim of this work is to predict numerically the three - dimensional turbulent flows of a Newtonian and incompressible fluid using nonlinear stress - strain models. The Explicit Algebraic Stress Models (EASM), which can take into account the anisotropy of turbulence with less CPU time and computer memory than RSM or approach DNS and LES, are adopted as a turbulence model. Among these models, we choosed Shih et al. (1995) and Craft et a1.(1996) models. These models are studied using a priori and a posteriori investigations. The study is carried out in square duct. This configuration presents a secondary flow and a significant anisotropy between the Reynolds stress components. To predict the significant viscous effects due to the wall and the corner, the damping functions are implemented. The maps of the second and third invariants in the plan of Lumley exhibited show the various states of turbulence and a good anisotropy level obtained. The mean flow field and the turbulent statistics are compared with existing numerical and experimental data for square and rectangular duct flow. The model performance is shown to be satisfactory. ln particular, the mean secondary velocity vectors and stream wise vorticity are well predicted

Nous présentons une étude expérimentale de l’effet d’une rotation d’ensemble sur les écoulements turbulents statistiquement stationnaires. Dans une première expérience, l’écoulement est entretenu à l’aide de générateurs de tourbillons contrarotatifs agissant de manière périodique dans une cuve en rotation remplie d’eau. Des mesures résolues en temps des trois composantes de la vitesse sont réalisées, dans des plans horizontaux et verticaux, à l’aide d’un dispositif de vélocimétrie stéréoscopique par images de particules embarqué dans le référentiel tournant. L’écoulement étudié présente, conformément à la littérature, une forte anisotropie et montre l’émergence d’un mode 2D énergétique. Pour la première fois expérimentalement, nous décrivons le bilan global d’énergie entre échelles d’une turbulence en rotation à travers la mesure des termes de l’équation de Kármán-Howarth-Monin généralisée au cas inhomogène. Nous mettons ainsi en évidence la présence d’une double cascade d’énergie : directe à petite échelle et inverse à grande échelle, l’échelle de renversement des cascades étant décroissante avec le taux de rotation. Nous évaluons ensuite la puissance injectée qui est intrinsèquement liée au caractère inhomogène de l’écoulement. L’injection d’énergie provient de l’auto-advection des structures turbulentes traversant les frontières de la zone de contrôle. Elle est large bande en échelles et s’étale à mesure que la rotation croît. Nous nous intéressons ensuite à la pertinence des modèles de turbulence d’ondes d’inertie. Nous réalisons tout d’abord une analyse spatio-temporelle qui révèle la présence d’ondes d’inertie linéaires à grande échelle spatiale et grande fréquence temporelle. En revanche, nous montrons que la signature spatio-temporelle des structures turbulentes associées aux échelles et fréquences faibles est brouillée par le processus linéaire de balayage stochastique par le mode 2D énergétique. Dans une seconde expérience, l’écoulement est engendré par une hélice constituée de quatre pales rectangulaires dans une cuve fermée en rotation. Nous évaluons le taux de dissipation d’énergie à travers la mesure de la puissance injectée par le moteur qui entraîne l’hélice. Nous fournissons alors, pour la première fois, une preuve directe de la loi d’échelle du taux de dissipation d’énergie prédite par la turbulence d’onde d’inertie qui est diminuée d’un facteur Rossby par rapport à la loi d’échelle de la turbulence 3D homogène et isotrope<br>We present an experimental study of the effect of global rotation on statistically stationary turbulent flows. In a first experiment, the flow is generated with counter-rotating vortex generators acting in a periodic motion in a rotating tank filled with water. Resolved in time measurements of the three component of the velocity are performed, in both horizontal and vertical planes, thanks to a stereoscopic particle image velocimetry system embarked in the rotating frame. The flow has, in accordance with the bibliography, a strong anisotropy and shows the emergence of an energetic 2D flow. For the first time experimentally, we describe the global scale by scale energy budget of a rotating turbulence through the measure of the terms of the inhomogeneous generalization of Kármán-Howarth-Monin equation. We thus reveal a double energy cascade: direct at small scale and inverse at large scale, the scale of cascade reversal decreasing with the rotation rate. Then, we evaluate the injected power into the system which is intrinsically linked to the inhomogeneities of the flow. The energy input comes from auto-advection of turbulent structures through the boundaries of the area considered. It is broadband in scales and spreads as ration increases. We then focus on relevance of inertial wave turbulence models. We first perform a spatiotemporal analysis which reveals the presence of linear inertial waves at large frequencies and scales. However, we show that the spatiotemporal signature of small frequencies and scales are scrambled by the linear process of stochastic sweeping by the 2D energetic mode. In a second experiment, the flow is created thanks to a four-rectangular-blade impeller in a closed rotating tank. We estimate the energy dissipation rate through the measure of the injected power by the motor that drives the impeller. We then bring, for the first time, a direct evidence of the scaling law predicted by inertial wave turbulence models which is fallen by a factor Rossby compared to the scaling law of 3D homogeneous isotropic turbulence

Cette étude, en partenariat avec l'AFB (Agence Française pour la Biodiversité), a pour objectif decomprendre le devenir des sédiments qui ont été bloqués dans des barrages hydrauliques. Lorsdes « chasses » (lâchers massifs d’eau) réalisées pour assurer la continuité écologique des coursd'eau avec retenues, une certaine quantité de sédiments est relarguée en aval de la retenue, cessédiments sont ensuite transportés sur un fond de rugosités immobiles à différentes échelles(gravier, galets, rochers). L'objectif de cette thèse est donc d'étudier comment la présence degrains grossiers et immobiles peut avoir un effet sur les différentes échelles du transport desédiment. Au travers de trois études expérimentales en canaux hydrauliques à surface libre, danslesquelles les grains grossiers immobiles sont modélisés par une canopée d'hémisphèresrégulièrement espacés, différents impacts de la présence des rugosités immobiles sont mis enexergue. Une étude préliminaire a tout d'abord pour objectif de comprendre comment l'apparitiond'une rugosité isolée dans du sédiment a pour effet de modifier les conditions d’hydrodynamiquelocale à l’amont de cette rugosité, en particulier par la mise en place d'un système de tourbillon(tourbillon en fer à cheval) pouvant accentuer le taux d'érosion locale. Ce tourbillon, trèsdocumenté pour des rugosités à géométrie simple, demeure très peu étudié dans le casd'obstacle aux parois courbées de type grains de rivière. Cette étude montre alors que lesdimensions et l'intensité du tourbillon en fer à cheval sont plus faibles dans le cas d'un obstacleaux parois inclinées et courbées que dans le cas d'un obstacle aux parois normales au fond, cephénomène étant expliqué par la facilité du fluide à contourner et l'obstacle, et donc la diminutiondu gradient de pression adverse à l'amont de l'obstacle, responsable du décollement de la couchelimite incidente et de la formation du tourbillon en fer à cheval. Dans une seconde étude,l'hydrodynamique locale proche de sédiment placé dans un patch d'hémisphères est mesuré, pourdifférents niveaux de découvrement du patch et pour du sédiment collé au fond du canal. Ilapparaît qu'en fonction du découvrement ($P = k/R$ avec $k$ la hauteur découverte d'unerugosité et $R$ sa hauteur totale), de forte variations locales de contrainte et de niveaux deturbulence au fond se mettent en place, le sédiment étant soumis à des sur-contraintesimportantes à l'arrière des rugosités pour $P = 20\%$, mais protégés pour des découvrementsplus importants. Une analyse par quadrants montre alors que ce phénomène peut être expliquépar la capacité des événements turbulents instantanés de forte intensité à pénétrer entre leshémisphères pour atteindre le sédiment. Une troisième étude dans un canal aux dimensions plusimportantes consiste à analyser la déstabilisation d’un lit sédimentaire initialement plat etrecouvrant totalement une canopée d’hémisphères immobiles. En début de la déstabilisation du lit,des dunes se forment et croissent, jusqu'à ce que leur volume devienne limité par l'apport initial desédiment. Des zones érodées apparaissent alors entre ces dunes, dans lesquelles on observe dusédiment protégé entre les hémisphères immobiles. Il apparaît alors que cette protection estdépendante de la dimension des zones érodées. Sur les temps longs et après évacuation desdunes en aval du canal, l'effet de protection des hémisphères immobiles sur le sédiment est misen avant, avec en particulier l'obtention d'une forte dépendance du taux d'érosion des grains enfonction du niveau de découvrement des hémisphères, un ralentissement soudain de l'érosionétant obtenu pour $P \sim 50 %. Ce changement de régime est expliqué en lien avec les résultatsde l’étude précédente sur les groupes d’hémisphères.

Observations were made of turbulent fluxes, turbulent kinetic energy, and the length scales of flux-carrying and energy-containing eddies in the ocean surface boundary layer. A new technique was developed to separate wave and turbulent motions spectrally, using ideas for turbulence spectra that were developed in the study of the bottom boundary layer of the atmosphere. The observations of turbulent fluxes allowed the closing of heat and momentum budgets across the air-sea interface. The observations also show that flux-carrying eddies are similar in size to those expected in rigid-boundary turbulence, but that energy-containing eddies are smaller than those in rigid-boundary turbulence. This suggests that the relationship between turbulent kinetic energy, depth, and turbulent diffusivity are different in the ocean surface boundary layer than in rigid-boundary turbulence. The observations confirm previous speculation that surface wave breaking provides a surface source of turbulent kinetic energy that is transported to depth where it dissipates. A model that includes the effects of shear production, wave breaking and dissipation is able to reproduce the enhancement of turbulent kinetic energy near the wavy ocean surface. However, because of the different length scale relations in the ocean surface boundary layer, the empirical constants in the energy model are different from the values that are used to model rigid-boundary turbulence. The ocean surface boundary layer is observed to have small but finite temperature gradients that are related to the boundary fluxes of heat and momentum, as assumed by closure models. However, the turbulent diffusivity of heat in the surface boundary layer is larger than predicted by rigid-boundary closure models. Including the combined effects of wave breaking, stress, and buoyancy forcing allows a closure model to predict the turbulent diffusivity for heat in the ocean surface boundary layer.<br>by Gregory Peter Gerbi.<br>Ph.D.

Cette thèse s'intéresse à la turbulence dans l'hélium (4He) superfluide, à des températures comprises entre 1.15 K et la température de transition superfluide, Tlambda = 2.17 K, ce qui correspond à une fraction de superfluide rho_s/rho comprise entre 97.6% et 0%. Il s'agit d'un travail essentiellement expérimental dont le but est de comparer la turbulence classique et la turbulence quantique, à l'aide de mesures locales de fluctuations de vitesse et de vorticité. Ces mesures sont complétées par l'analyse de champs de vitesse issus de simulations numériques.Nous avons développé une instrumentation spécifique, adaptée aux écoulements cryogéniques: des tubes de Pitot miniatures, dont les dimensions effectives ont pu être rendues sub-millimétriques, et un capteur original, basé sur la déflection d'une micro-poutrelle (300 microns x 100 microns x 1 microns) mesurée à l'aide d'un micro-résonateur supraconducteur dans la gamme de fréquence du GHz. Un premier prototype de ce capteur, micro-fabriqué à partir d'une galette de silicium, a été réalisé en salle blanche puis validé dans une conduite cryogénique. La résolution spatiale obtenue est du même ordre que celle des meilleurs anémomètres en He II, et il devrait être possible de l'améliorer d'une décade.Les tubes de Pitot ont été placés dans les souffleries superfluides TSF et TOUPIE. La première, fruit d'une collaboration nationale, a fourni un écoulement stationnaire de grille (Rlambda= 250, 1.65 K < T < 2.6 K, rho_s/rho < 80%) et un sillage proche. La seconde soufflerie, refroidie pour la première fois dans le cadre de cette thèse, a fourni un écoulement de sillage lointain (Rlambda = 1100, 1.55 K < T < 4.2 K, rho_s/rho < 86%).Les mesures ont mis en évidence dans ces écoulements des similarités fortes avec les écoulements classiques, aux échelles inertielles: spectre de vitesse en k^{-5/3}, constante de Kolmogorov et taux de turbulence identiques aux écoulements classiques, loi des 4/5, exposants anormaux pour les fonctions de structures des incréments de vitesse (intermittence). À plus petite échelle, les simulations numériques (1.15 K < T < 2.1565 K) mettent en évidence un comportement exotique : l'énergie s'accumule et tend vers l'équipartition, ce qui se traduit par un spectre de vitesse simulé en k^2. Ce phénomène s'accentue à basse température. Enfin, des mesures locales de fluctuation de vorticité ont été réalisées à l'aide de pinces à second son sur une gamme de température comprise entre 1.69 K (rho_s/rho=77%) et 2.01 K (rho_s/rho = 42%). Nous avons observé un raidissement de la pente des spectres de vorticité lorsque la température diminue. Ce résultat peut être interprété comme une conséquence du phénomène d'équipartition mis en évidence dans les simulations numériques à petite échelle.

The prime difficulty in finding a solution to the problem of high Reynolds' number turbulence is the large number of strongly interacting degrees of freedom. The most natural method of tackling the problem is to perform a Renormalisation Group transformation which removes from consideration the small scale degrees of freedom. The historical development of this approach is charted and the importance of the universal nature of the inertial range behaviour is noted. The problem tackled initially is that of homogeneous, isotropic, stationary turbulence. The velocity field is split into explicit (large) and implicit (small) scale modes and then the implicit modes are split into two parts, which correspond to the correlated and uncorrelated behaviour of the implicit modes with regard to the explicit modes. A new averaging procedure is introduced where the realisations of the ensemble are those where the explicit modes are held constant while the implicit ones explore the possible solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation (NSE). The equation for the modes averaged away yields a term which acts as an increment to the viscosity in the equation for the explicit modes. The form of this term is arrived at by considering the uncorrelated part of the implicit field as the leading contribution. It is argued that the time scales of the explicit scales will be much greater than those of the implicit scales facilitating a Markovian approximation. Further, the sum of the moment hierarchy in the uncorrelated part can be shown to be approximated by its first term within a plausible model. Hence, a form for the increment to viscosity is obtained. The renormalisation group iteration yields a fixed point in the effective viscosity. It is argued that this fixed point will have captured the essential physics of the inertial range. In order to make calculations, an ansatz is made for the uncorrelated part of the implicit field. By taking a truncated Taylor series in the implicit scales about the dissipation cut-off, itis found that the ansatz approximates the uncorrelated field. The fixed point for the effective viscosity is calculated numerically. From this, a value for the Kolmogorov constant of 1.60 is calculated. This constant shows the expected behaviour for variation of the width of the band of wavenumbers averaged out at each iteration. There is a region of parameter space where the constant shows no dependence on the output parameters. This region is taken to produce valid results, since a real quantity cannot depend on how the average is performed.
