Pełny tekst źródłaDeveloped through the analysis of several archaeological sites, this research project focuses on the urban housing of the city of Alexandria in Egypt, from its foundation by Alexander the Great (331 B.C.) until the end of the High Empire. The theme of domestic architecture in ancient Alexandria has to be seen in a wider Mediterranean context, this city being rooted in the Greek and Roman tradition. It is also important to understand what the influence of Egyptian civilization was on imported models. In recent years, considerable progress achieved thanks to the excavations performed in the heart of Alexandria, has led to a substantial increase of the archaeological documentation available for the study of the domestic architecture of the city. A comprehensive study proposing a definition of private space in the Greco-Roman Alexandria requires the analysis of the structuring of private and public spaces, which are complementary and inseparable components of a single entity: "the city". Issues of implementation, functional and symbolic organization of private space in direct contact with the urban space organization, also functional and symbolic, will be discussed to highlight possible affinities with domestic housing schemes known elsewhere in the Mediterranean. The objective is to achieve a study of the Alexandrian case including the analysis of transformations and evolutions of habitat areas as well as the explanation of architectural and urban projects that have governed in time, through multiple adjustments, changes in the ancient city of Alexandria

Pełny tekst źródłaIn this thesis the study of the suburbs of Ostia (Rome, Italy) took place at different levels of study, from the macro scale of the entire neighborhoods to the micro scale of the single stratigraphic trench. The archaeological evidence of the porta Marina area and of the “Trastevere Ostiense” have been analyzed and filed as Topographical Units and recorded in a GIS. For each structure data were collected either through the consultation of archives, through field surveys, aerial photography, direct examinations and excavation essays. 148 artifacts from the old excavations were recorded and inserted in a data base created ad hoc. Where possible, spatial data was associated with the objects, with the positioning in the place of discovery within the GIS. The survey of the archaeological evidences of the “Trastevere Ostiense” allowed to recognize a densely built territory, with a chronology that goes from first to at least the fifth century AD. Among the types of buildings identified, the “horreum” seems to be the prevailing. The precise positioning of some excavation trenches of 1957 at the loop of the Tiber has allowed to identify a flood zone of second-third century AD reclaimed and built. At the same time, on the other side, the Via Ostiense was rebuilt further south due to erosion. The overall study of the urbanistic evolution of the suburban area of porta Marina has allowed to identify 13 main phases of life, from the first century BC until the 6th century AD, in addition to two phases of spoliation and a phase of sea erosion of the Middle Age. Among the main novelties there is the discovery of a notable construction activity dating back to the Julio-Claudian age to the Flavia age, previously almost unknown, which can be partially connected to funerary buildings. It is very probable, in the light of the new data, that there was a necropolis outside porta Marina, which was completely dismantled during the Hadrianic urban renovation and the thermal development of the maritime district. The large-scale analytical approach, also thanks to the chronological extremes derived from the excavations carried out with the Ostia Marina Project, has led to a completely renewed vision of the city's maritime sector. The presumed preservation of late Republican funerary monuments in the imperial era turned out to be a not entirely exact theory, the result of the distorted vision created with the E-42 restorations and demolitions. The stratigraphic analysis shows a partial obliteration of the funerary monuments already occurred by the end of the first century. A.D. due to the raising of the walking surfaces. The research on buildings built close to and above the Late-Republic walls made it possible to highlight that they quickly lost the defensive functions, but continued to be respected until the beginning of the second century AD. Subsequently, the eastern part functioned as an aqueduct, while the western part was demolished to build new buildings. An arch was built in place of the porta Marina door, to set the limit between town and suburb. Starting from some aerial photos, the plan of a large building, located in the eastern unexcavated portion of the porta Marina suburban area, was completed. The particular form of the complex allows to hypothesize a link to the “foro ad mare” built by Aureliano, mentioned in the Historia Augusta. The study of the late-antique phases revealed a remarkable vitality of the district throughout the IV until the beginning of the fifth century AD, while during the first half of the 5th century AD strong signs of abandonment appear. The probable effects of the earthquake of 443 AD were found, starting from the traces of collapse found in at least four buildings. Another important acquisition concerns the relationship between the city and the sea and changes in the coastline over the centuries

Pełny tekst źródłaBased on the great nymphaeum of Leptis Magna, the research considers the development and significance of this water monument in one of the most important African cities of the Roman period, through three principal aspects. The historiographical study aboards the subject through literary testimony from the last centuries and an abundance of documentary archives, the history of the edifice from its burial to its reconstruction, studying the different stages of its unearthing and its restoration, thus pinpointing perspectives from various observers of the monument. The urban study divulges the significance of the edifice in the city, in comparison with other monuments in the region over different periods of its history, as well as reconstituting Leptis Magna's water supply. Finally, the architectural study undertakes a detailed analysis of the structures, which highlights the conception and the transformations of the nymphaeum, as well as its hydraulic functions. This architectural approach, which is accompanied by a detailed catalogue of the decorative elements, juxtaposes the technical considerations of construction with the ornamental treatment of the marble blocks, accounting for the economical aspects of the site of the nymphaeum. This research proposes not only a consideration of the appearance, the role and the history of the monument and situates it within the series of Roman nymphaea, but also the perception of its impact on the local inhabitants at different moments in its history, looking for accomplish by archaeology some sociological considerations

Pełny tekst źródłaFor lack of scientific works, Constantine, capital of eastern Algeria, has somewhat disappeared from the archeological bibliography these last decades. It is right to say that the archeological study in urban areas isn’t that easy. To overcome this lack of research, this presentation offers an inventory of fixtures of the previous works on the subject, in order to produce the outline of a research on the urban topography of the city, in Antiquity. The starting point of this work represents an awareness of the dispersal of the sources and the difficulty to consult them. Thus, gathering the old and the recent sources was necessary to create a notebook of discovery notes, accompanied or not by «boards». These notes each form a site to copy out, when possible on a map, that is divided in several parts, corresponding to different sections, made up to facilitate the organisation of this study. This catalog, first estimation of the archological potential of Constantine eventually allows us to establish a few hypothesis that will be used as a support for further archelogical research

Pełny tekst źródłaThe theatre has been for both Greek and Romans an essential element of a city and, at the same time, of being a citizen. As many researches are demonstrating these days, studying the theatres and their architectural and morphological features, as well as analysing their position and functions, can provide important data and clues about how communities saw themselves, which cultural network they were part of or shared characteristics with, to which extent they influenced or were influenced by other cultures. Therefore, given their ideological role, theatrical buildings seemed a valid hermeneutical instrument to understand the architectural culture of this territory as well as the political and social evolution of the communities which inhabited it. Thus, it seemed appropriate to adopt this approach to a region whose urbanistic and political evolution is still under constant debate, such as Epirus and Southern Illyria. The main aim of the research has been a re-interpretation of the data already published about the theatres chosen as a Corpus in the light of the most recent studies on the territory but also of important research themes that animate the scientific debate of the last decades. It is indeed possible to read those data in a new perspective taking into account historical, cultural, architectural and urbanistic contexts both from a diachronic and a geographic point of view. This approach has, in the end, made possible to review, clarify, update and interpret the available data about each theatre and to frame it into a wider, Mediterranean, context. In order to achieve this aim a complex database has been conceived that could include all the data mentioned above given some homogenous and common criteria. It is worth noticing, however, that the database has not been conceived only to manage a huge amount of data but also, to actually serve as a normative instrument for a better understandable and more homogeneous systematisation both of the data themselves and their relations with sources and modern studies. The review of the published information about theatrical buildings in Epirus and Southern Illyria, in the light of the above-mentioned systematisation, has consequently proved itself useful in order to propose a new perspective on the settlement dynamics, the monumentalisation and the cultural development of those regions.Eventually, it has been possible to conclude that the city and the theatre can’t be separated, either in Epirus or in Southern Illyria, from the development of a Hellenistic realm that, at least at the beginning, has marked significantly the image of the territory. The constitution itself of the Aeacid monarchy, almost “contractual” regarding the different koina that kept a significant amount of administrative autonomy throughout the entire Hellenism, must have envisaged a regular presence of the king in each of the most important cities of the region. The monumentalisation, that we could call “processional”, of a great number of urban centres, such as Byllis, Kassope or Phoinike, can be legitimately linked to the rise of Pyrrhus and the establishment of the so-called Great Epirus. Its therefore possible to identify, in this historical moment, the construction of a political conscience that we could define as entirely Mediterranean and that is largely expressed in the cultural, urban and architectural features we can observe in both Epirus and Southern Illyria.Even if the establishment of the polis as an administrative model has met some resistence in the region, the heritage of the pyrrhic era can be recognised in that cultural and political conscience expressed through the proper and traditional Hellenistic patterns which form a peculiar language that will eventually been adopted by Rome while imposing its power into the Mediterranean context

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis presents an analytical approach to the urban evolution of nimes (gard, france) from the end of the vith century bc, time of the apparition of the agglomeration, and the iiird century ad. After a general introduction concerned with the major geographical caracteristics, as well as a brief presentation of the history of local archaeological research, the documentary base on which this study is founded can be established thanks to an inventory of sites. All recent excavations between 1965 and march 1996, which can be located precisely on the current town plan, are treated in the catalogue with abundant illustrated notes. Some less recent observations are also taken into account in this inventory when they seem likely to have participated in the restitution of the main urban landscape. The synthesis which follows reveals the slow elaboration of the agglomeration from the first village installed on the slopes and at the foot of the mont-cavalier up to the roman town, characterized in particullary by it's vast surrounding wall dating from the era of august. For each of the big chronological periods defined - end of vith c. Bc/end of iiith c. Bc; iind/ist c. Bc; era of august and earlier empire; iiird c. Ad and onwards -, the following criteria are succesively aborded : arterial roads, necropolis, fields, possible peripheral establishments; town limits, urban topography as revealed by the streets, blocks of houses and neighbourhoods; the monumental public complexes and their organic relationships; private homes and finally traces of handicraft and commercial activities. The general conclusion treats more specifically historical material which emanates from this topographical urban study

Pełny tekst źródłaThe climate of Greece has not changed since antiquity ; as now, this country had then a very unequal distribution of rain throughout the year, which is characterized by abundant rain in autumn and winter and a dry period for the remainder of the year. For domestic, artisanal and agricultural use, when springs and rivers were insufficient, the Greeks used subterranean water through the means of wells, or rain-water that they kept in cisterns. In the archaic period, when cities were beginning to be formed, the main installations used to obtain water were the wells. The regulations fixed by Solon in Athens show well the predominance of wells during this period. With the growth of cities, during the 6th, then the 5th century, fountains were being developped. All the cities of Greece had these beautiful and resonant fountains, ornate with columns and proches. Which returned the laugh of joyful users : archaeological remains merely confirm the evidence of vase-paintings. The Greeks knew how to feed their towns and sanctuaries with water by using various devices that they protected by well defined and severe regulations. The Greeks provided the essentials for their people, often giving a touch of art and taste in their installations with their aesthetic sense which, concerning architecture, was very developped. But they did not use water as a source of power. A Greek from Alexandria left the description of a steam-engine and its

Pełny tekst źródłaThis dissertation presents an analysis of the urbanism of the city of Zadar in Dalmatia, the development of the city and its urban contents from its beginnings in Antiquity until 1409. The urban analysis is based primarily upon the various surviving monuments and remnants. Relevant historical sources have also been taken into account. The different elements have been classified and presented according to four historical periods: Antiquity, Late Antiquity, Early Middle Ages, High and Late Middle Ages. Within each period, Zadar's buildings are categorised according to four typologies: Fortifications, Public Secular Structures, Private Secular Structures and Sacred Buildings. The remains of the city's infrastructure (sidewalks, drainage channels, etc.) have also been presented. The development of the city of Zadar, through its urban transformation, has been analysed through the outlined periods while keeping the usual periodization of general historic events on the eastern Adriatic coast. The protohistoric period has also been considered. Analysis has also revealed that the regular orthogonal grid of the city was defined in Antiquity, and that despite intensive construction during the medieval period when the city developed its urban physiognomy, nearly all the principle characteristics of the city established during Antiquity have been preserved

Pełny tekst źródłaThe Hellenistic period is the time when the aspect of the cities of Ionia and Caria is changing gradually. In almost each city, an amount of new public buildings progressively shaping a new urban landscape that looks like a mirror of the city that created it. It is this unprecedented transformation of urban centers during the Hellenistic period that this thesis studies, with attention to the cities of Ionia and Caria in all their diversity. We aim at making sense of the changes in these two regions, which experienced hellenisation and urbanisation early ; they are also characterized by interactions between cities and Hellenistic kings. This study suggests ways of understanding civic societies through the city. We are looking at t the most remarkable features of the city : its public buildings . In the first part devoted to urban fortifications, buildings housing political activities , and areas of cultural life , public monuments are mentioned as spaces of civic life , and we search for the reason why many new buildings were built. Then, the study describes how urban space becomes a place of truly urban life, with a landscape, facilities and a specific spatial organization. In a third section, we show how the cities’ economic prosperity is reflected in stone buildings – some of them housing economic activities – reflects the will of cities to develop and oversee economic activities and the wealth of the poleis. This also helps explain a sustained construction activity made possible by the existence of abundant and varied resources available to cities. Finally, the reflection deals with political and social aspects of the evolution of urban space. This last part is placed in a broader historical perspective, that of the evolution of the Hellenistic city

Pełny tekst źródłaFor a decade, several studies have renewed significantly our knowledge about public baths and their practice in the Middle East. Unfortunately, no synthesis considering the bathing phenomenon in a diachronic perspective of history of mentalities in a single city appears to have been carried out. Based on an archaeological and architectural approach, this work at first intended to propose a diachronic synthesis of the evolution of eight public bath buildings currently known in Gerasa and their practice in history. The situation in the City of the Decapolis is then confronted to the practice of public bath in Antiquity in the Middle East, as it is known today, allowing to identify matches, differences and characteristics of the corpus of Gerasa. Based on an original methodology, this study highlights the deeply hybrid role of these institutions with natural facilities for the cleaning of the body but also specific and independent spaces for which civic, political and religious functions may be assumed

Pełny tekst źródłaThis dissertation presents the results of research carried out on the architecture of the monumental municipal and religious center of the ancient city of Apta Iulia (Apt). A Latin colony created apparently by the initiative of Julius Caesar and finalized by Octavian-Augustus during the first century B.C., its remains are scattered inside the cellars of the old center of the city of Apt. We have committed ourselves to defining the chronology covering the periods corresponding to its creation up to its presence within modern constructions in the city center. The principal buildings studied are the ancient theatre, its porticus post scaenam, the possible presence of a basilica and the main components of its forum (temple and senate). The results are presented in the form of maps of the group of discovered structures and by a significant collection of photographs of the principal edifices of this monumental urban Gallo-Roman ensemble

Pełny tekst źródłaThis doctoral dissertation presents a synthesis of research on streets and public courts in Crete during the Proto- and Neopalatial periods. Ten sites are considered: Knossos, Gournia, Malia, Mochlos, Myrtos-Pyrgos, Palaikastro, Petras, Pseira, Sissi and Zakros. In the first volume, we propose a definition of the different elements related to Minoan streets and courts, and present an exhaustive catalogue of the currently published remains. The second volume, the synthesis, is a thematic study of all aspects of Minoan street and court systems. Here materials and building techniques are first considered. Then a typology of the streets, courts and junctions is proposed. The next chapters consist of a study of the different equipments found in the streets and courts and an examination of the morphology and dimensions of these urban spaces. Next, traffic principles are analyzed, followed by a summary of the different functions of streets and courts. The appearance of these built public spaces is discussed in the larger context of the emergence of Minoan towns, before considering their continuation following the destructions at the end of the Neopalatial period. The last chapter contextualizes the role of streets and courts in Minoan society. More specifically, it considers the different clues revealed by these spaces for a more comprehensive understanding of social organization during the Proto- and Neopalatial periods

Pełny tekst źródłaThis research is dedicated to the largest private house of Europos-Dura in Syria, the Residence of the Governor Lysias, strategos and epistates of the city. This building has been excavated in the Thirties by the American-French expedition of Yale University and has remained abandoned during a half century. lt has never been published. The resumption of work by the French-Syrian expedition in Europos-Dura has made it as one of its scientific objectives. The historical context of this study spans four centuries since the creation of the city around 150 B. C. to the Sasanian siege and the death of the city circa 256 A. D. First part : history, methods and results of the archaeological excavations ofthis building by the Yale expedition and the resumption of the work since 2006, presenting the various elements and orientations of the study set up during this research. Second part : the architectural study of Lysias' Residence in its final state. A description of the different spaces and architectural elements that compose it allows us to identify sectors that have specific functions. Third part : the architectural evolution of the residence through the different states it has known and the relative chronology of the building. Fourth part : comparisons with other similar monuments of Europos-Dura and with other large dwellings of same period in the hellenized Orient. Conclusion : Lysias' Residence shows the uniqueness of the prestigious architecture that developed in Europos-Dura, which is a picture of a local inspiration and of Greco-Mesopotamian traditions

Pełny tekst źródłaThe topic of this thesis is: Langres- Andemantunnum (Haute-Marne, Champagne-Ardenne). Urbanistic study of the city of Lingons' capital. In order to carry out this research, excavation archives takeovers, local survey, the exploitation of eighteenth and nineteenth erudites manuscripts and unpublished notes of local researchers, among others, were required. The huge mass of data collected has helped to address new problematics regarding roads and urban organization of this ancient capital, the rampart of the Late Roman Empire, water projects, public buildings, housing, crafts, cemeteries and suburbium. Thanks to these new data it is now possible to better understand the occupation of the promontory during antiquity. The setup process of the oppidum, the development of a carefully designed urban program as of the first century AD and urban consequences of the Late Roman Empire disorders are among the fundamental stages experienced by the langrois promontory. Some of the urban organization characteristics of these different phases of occupation have influenced the current city map

Pełny tekst źródłaBy focusing both on epigraphic data and archaeological sources (4th-1st centuries B.C.E.), this thesis aimed at understanding the political experience of Greek people in the Hellenistic age. It was marked by the construction of many buildings frequented by citizens for political activities. However, these places cannot be defined as the headquarters of these institutions in the sense that they would be specifically dedicated to them. The cities grouped these buildings together on the agora to form monumental complexes, dominated in these regions, from the 2nd century B. C. E., by large bouleuteria. As places where citizens could exercise their collective power and where they staged the civic community, these complexes appear to be the political places par excellence. The choice of the city-states of Ionia and Karia – adjacent islands included – offers a contrasted observatory to study the evolution of political places. Indeed, if, on the one hand, this study-area is relatively culturally homogeneous, on the other hand the cities of Ionia and Karia faced different historical paths, thus different evolutions. When cities were founded on free sites, they had plenty of places to innovate and they could build large political complexes, without the constraint of previous monumental structures, whereas other city-states had to deal with a denser and older urban structure. The form of political buildings seems to have been determined mainly by the topography of the site, whether it was a terraced site or a plain site on the coast. Finally, the existence of political sites was conditioned by the ability of each city-state to finance their construction. Thus, if the multiplication of these political complexes is undeniable and if their configuration seems to obey principles shared by all, the composition of these complexes remained specific to each city-state

Pełny tekst źródłaTiber Island, between Vrbs and Trastevere, is one of the topographical characteristic of the site ofRome. Its history and fame begun with the arrival of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine brought fromEpidauros. No study went thoroughly back over the history and topography of this significant component ofroman scenery since the monograph written by M. Besnier in the early years of the 20th century. Nowadayscurrent developments in archeological research and new perspectives in roman topography throw new light onmany issues. This thesis aims to go back over the development, the town-planning but also the place the Tiberislet occupied in town. In this perspective, this is not just about grasping the island as a place but also as acomponent of roman landscape and urban development. Indeed Tiber island can only be apprehended at firstwithin its natural surroundings then its urban one. The island shows a high concentration of cults, which begunwith the advent of Aesculapius, who made it the “sacred island” thus permanently marking its topography. However, studying its planning and administration reveals it was real district too, with all the features as regardsarrangements and activities. At first on the fringe of the city, its integration to the city begun in the 2nd centuryBC until it was established as uicus Censori by the augustean reform. During the Imperial period, the island isalready seen as an old-settled part of the city, which will only know new changes with the banning ofpolytheistic cult
Parole chiavi

Pełny tekst źródłaThe claudio-nerian period is in keeping with a triple process, artistic, social and institutional, in which a monarchistic type regime is asserted. Architecturally, Nero's domus form the seal of republican aristocratic domus, but the domus aurea is already a palace. Its art is rooted in the national tradition which assimilated the Hellenistic legacy and the Julio-Claudian one. The western quarter of the remains of the Esquiline is prior to 64; the domus is not a solar residence. Socially, the period is marked by the stability of the augustean juridical structures and also by a profound renewal of the superior orders. The art of the claudio-neronian period reveals on the one hand the imperial evolution of society and of the regime in the lst cent. , and, on the other hand the nature of the neronism and mentalities
Mailleur, Stephanie. "Imagining roman ports : the contribution of iconography to the reconstruction of roman mediterranean portscapes of the impérial period". Thesis, Lyon, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020LYSE2049.
Pełny tekst źródłaUnder the Roman Empire, harbours played an important role for the image of the city. They were more than utilitarian constructions. The buildings and monuments were organised within the space of the port in a programmatic way that made up a genuine urban landscape that I have described as a “portscape”. This term, derived from Zanker’s townscape concept, is understood as the urban aspect, layout and design of Roman ports but also as the lived environment with its societies reflected by its cultural characteristics. Despite recent excavations conducted at Roman ports, our knowledge of portscapes under the Roman Empire is very unclear and the reality of port monuments remains poorly understood. Most known ancient Mediterranean ports are not well preserved, and often only preserved archaeologically at the level of their foundations. Whilearchaeologists are able to reconstruct a plan, understanding ports three dimensionally is at best a challenge. What did Roman ports really look like?Due to the lack of ancient sources relating to Roman ports, using iconography could be useful. This research aims to demonstrate that port depictions, quite abundant during the Imperial period and decorating various type of artistic media (coins, ceramics, mosaics, paintings, gemstones etc.), can make an important contribution for learning more about ports as they are the only source of information that allows us to understand volumetrically, the architecture of portsthat no longer survives archaeologically.Through this work, I will see how the pictorial genre of maritime landscape emerged during the Augustan period as well as the process of its diffusion, reception and standardisation in art during the Imperial period. I will also address the issue of the contexts in which port-themed decoration has been found. I will focus on the main characteristics of portscapes by means of a linguistic approach that distinguishes the different messages conveyed by images according to their contexts (domestic, funeral, politics, etc.).By means of three specific case studies, I will demonstrate how it is possible to deal with the iconographic and epigraphic evidence in order to better understand the components of Roman portscapes. Case-study 1 focuses on the weighing control systems (sacomaria). Case-study 2 studies the single monuments that decorated the portscape, such as freestanding column monuments and honorific arches. Case-study 3 aims to better understand cult spaces in portcontexts by using the example of the sanctuaries of Isis. Finally, I will focus on the urban syntax of the portscape through the case-study of the port of Leptis Magna. Enquiry will ascertain the extent to which the urban programme of its portscape corresponded to a standard design in reality and in iconography

Pełny tekst źródłaThis study provides a synthesis of the data issued from Celtic settlements (“agglomération”) of the third century BC in the whole European area. Centered on bibliographical data, a large approach of the phenomenon of agglomeration was considered. This study focuses on identification and characterization of these settlements. Among forty-four sites initially selected to understand the emergence and the forms of these settlements, ten were cross-checked in order to clarify their functions and roles. This consideration of the data allows us to improve our understanding of economic and territorial organization of the Celtic society during the third century BC, but also increase our knowledge of the urbanization process in the Iron Age. Over the European area this phenomenon considerably renews the vision of Celtic society of the third century BC and its organization

Pełny tekst źródłaIn the last few decades, research on Roman aristocracy has been largely diversified by extending its scope, over and beyond well-known political and prosopographical aspects, to new issues such as the forms of communication of the elite, the semiology of power, or the relation between political practices and space. This PhD follows these paths and introduces an important innovation: if the space of the aristocratic life has long been considered as a dichotomy between urbs and rus, between domus and uilla, the present work demonstrates the relevance of a third place long neglected by researchers, the residential horti of Rome. The study of gardens as aristocratic residences, located in green spaces outside of the city and at the same time very close to it, allows for the replacement of traditional domus-uilla dichotomy by the domus-horti-uilla triptych and leads to the discovery a little known place of political action along with the conditions and potential for interaction proper to this third place of residence. The study of horti is based primarily on a systematic analysis of numerous literarysources; it takes into account archaeological data wherever available. The study of garden historiography is a preliminary to the conceptualization of this study

Pełny tekst źródłaThe vestiges of Roman theatres are ubiquitous throughout the Mediterranean Basin; these structures are familiar, yet remain relatively unexplored, with only a few studies considering their general place in Roman life. Inspired by research on the theatres and entertainment buildings of more recent times, this study offers an urbanistic perspective on these multipurpose edifices; characteristic of the urbanitas, these were at the same time buildings for theatrical performances, ritual ceremonies, and daily activities; civic and religious meeting places; centres of social interaction. The innovations the Romans made to the architectural theatrical form invented by the Greeks enabled them to redefine the theatre’s place in the city and to incorporate it purposefully into their plans for urbanization. Combining the analysis of ancient textual and pictoral representations of Roman theatres with archaeological case studies, this thesis explores and clarifies the practical and symbolic relationships between the theatre and the city in Roman times. By broadening the scope of investigation and by exploring the dynamic and affective positioning of the theatre into the Roman urban landscape, this thesis reveals these architectural structures to be simultaneously typical and unique, complex and understandable, and ultimately remarkably effective in establishing and embodying the image of the city

Built in the area south of the forum, in part by using and destroying the city walls, these buildings are characterized to develop multi-level terraces that range to the plains of the Sarno River and horrea of Pompeii. This particular structure of these buildings is a point a great importance to observe the urban development of Pompeii between the third century of BC and its destruction in 79. In applying the principles of stratigraphy of the frame, we were able to identify the phases development which is now the largest known house in Pompeii, fruit of the union of several independant buildings. This work, in addition to allow a detailed study of a particular monument, allows a new perspective on the entire urban fabric of Pompeii. Analysis of these buldings in line with the results from recent stratigraphic investigations undertaken in many parts of the city, allows you to review the evolution of the Samnite and Roman site

The author studies the principles which have governed space organisation, the everstanding elements and the dynamics in action. Spatial analyse proves the integration of a nature regarded as sacred and how no external intervention occurred before the Spaniards came

Pełny tekst źródłaThe coastal area of the city of Ostia is characterized by a concentration of bath facilities built between the end of the 1st c. AD and the Late Antiquity period. The aim of this work is on the two main baths complexes discovered in the late 18 and mid 19 centuries, and extensively excavated in the first half of the 1970s: the Porta Marina Baths and the Terme Marittime. Their results were left unpublished, except for few specific studies on mosaic floors, architectonical elements and statuary. On these premises, the field research was organized in four steps: surveying, stratigraphic and technical studies; diachronic/synchronic analysis; interaction between maritime and coastal environments; and parallels with comparable contexts. Furthermore, new technologies have been involved for 3D surveying (UAV-photogrammetry, thermography, geophysical survey) thanks to the multidisciplinary project set up between CCJ, MAP and CEREGE, which turned into an innovative work in terms of methods of analysis.Concurrently, the investigation was extended on written sources based on the documentation of Ostia archives, Archivio Centrale di Stato, and Aerofototeca Nazionale. Ostia inscriptions preserved in the Vatican and Capitoline Museums, and recorded on the manuscripts of the late 18th century by G. Marini (Biblioteca Apostolica) and E.Q. Visconti (BNF Paris), were also included. The main objective was to understand the long-term evolution of these baths in the coastal townscape of Ostia, mainly based on architectural, functional, urbanistic and decor analyses. The project also inquires the legal status of these complexes, their commissioners and property, funding sources, and users

Pełny tekst źródłaPlaces of openness and cultural mixing, cities feed fantasies and utopias. They swarm, taking over the countryside. The subject of investigation here is the city in antiquity, Carthage in Gustave Flaubert's Salammbo, and the Egyptian city of Abou during the times of the Pharaohs in Naguib Mahfouz' Pharaoh's Lover. The thesis examines the representation of the city in the novels of Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880), and Naguib Mahfouz, the master of Arabic literature (1911-2006). Our starting point is the following question, "What is the importance of the city for the two novelists?" The analysis brings together comparative, historic and thematic perspectives. It show cases the creative manner in which Mahfouz received French 19th century novels

Pełny tekst źródłaThis study investigates changes in the organisation of the Bronze Age city of Hattuša (North Central Anatolia), during the time the site became the capital of the Hittites. Interweaving a diachronic, reproducible and multi-scalar analysis of the main living quarter of the city (the so-called Westterrasse), this study enables an innovative exploration of the organisation of the city-state (1950-1750 BCE) and capital of the Hittite kingdom (1700-1200 BCE), by attending to the links between politics and urban space. The chronological analysis demonstrates that the best-recovered phase of the Westterrasse dates to the 16th-15th century and not to the 14th-13th century as previously assumed. The study of the buildings, streets and sewage system indicate a high degree of planning for the Westterrasse with careful management of both public infrastructure and private dwelling, which underline the mediation necessary for their cohabitation. The insights afforded by examination of the distribution of finds reveal the broad contours of the population of the Westterrasse, as they are situated in the political context of the future Hittite capital

Pełny tekst źródłaDuring the Roman period, “Apollonia of Illyria”, a greek settlement in Albania, knew several phases of construction and development. This is demonstrated by the study of the monumental center which was the object of excavations supervised by a French archaeologist Léon Rey at the beginning of the XXth century. After World War II, Albanian teams pursued the researches. They realized the restorations and the current presentations. The monumental center is organized around two main buildings, the Odeon and the “monument of Agonothetes”. These meeting places give evidence of the public character of this part of the city, just like the existence of a triumphal arch built later on. Shops also prove the commercial function of this place. Then, the religious function is illustrated by an ionic temple surrounded by a portico associated with a building named “prytaneum’ and by a small sanctuary. Finally, a square building is either a library or an “augusteum”. After an analysis of the visible vestiges and documentation, a report on the functions of the various monuments and a presentation of the comparative elements, the hypothesis of reconstructions will be proposed and transposed into computer-generated images. They will be assembled in a global vision of the roman monumental center at the beginning of the third century. Researches concerning the agora, localized a few hundred meters further, are not achieved yet but this place could be an architectural complex dedicated to imperial cult. During the second century, its importance could have attracted the bouleuterion that remains, for the moment, named as “monument of Agonothetes”

Pełny tekst źródłaThe study of the ancient road to the archaeological site of Saint-Romain-en-Gal (Rhône), conducted for twenty-five years, helped to highlight the essential role of the Portico street in the development of this area of Antique Vienna, on the right bank of the Rhône. Across the plain from west to east, the street would strop abruptly on the bank of the Rhône opposite the ancient heart of the capital of the Allobroges, raised the issue of crossing the river. The number of bridges attributed to the Roman era has seen changes over time. An important historiographical research has been conducted to determine actual knowledge clues proving the presence of one or more works of ancient art at the height of Vienna, duplex urbs. But to understand their logic implementation, it took also follow the genesis of installing newer crossing points that were subject to the same topographical and urban and ancient books constraints. It appears from this study that two bridges can be attributed to the Roman era. The third, more monumental, stone bridge, seen in the collective memory as the roman bridge in the city, however, seems to go back to the High Middle Age
