Many pharmaceuticals, such as the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole, are not eliminated during a conventional wastewater treatment process and are often not biodegraded in the environment. In this project, 60 mg/L and 100 μg/L solutions of sulfamethoxazole in both reverse osmosis water and wastewater were treated with ozone. A solid phase extraction procedure with reproducible analyte recoveries was developed to pre-concentrate the low concentration of sulfamethoxazole in both water matrices (reverse osmosis and municipal wastewater).
